In episode 239 of The Just Checking In Podcast we checked in with Gary Hayes. Gary is the Co-Founder and CEO of PTSD999, which is a charity that was set up in 2015 to support those in the emergency services, and their families, living with Post Traumatic Stress. Gary lives with Complex PTSD himself and was undiagnosed for many years when he worked in the British Transport Police (BTP) as a Police Officer. Gary's journey began when he joined the Army in the mid-1980s and spent many years in non-active service. He then met his wife, who was joining the police force and he was growing tired of military life. He was encouraged to join himself and he did in 2003, passing through the recruitment process and joining the BTP. He started by policing football matches in London, largely for West Ham United before then joining a specialist counter-terrorist policing team. The year is 2005 and sadly, Gary's policing work coincided with 7/7, which is the biggest and most deadly terrorist attack that has hit London in recent memory. 52 people were killed in bombings on London tubes and buses, with a second failed attack coming on 21/7. Gary was seconded to the temporary mortuary that had been set up at Charing Cross to identify the victims and spent two harrowing months going through hundreds of body parts, identifying people and notifying their families. This work had a huge impact on Gary's mental health and he began to go off the rails, drinking heavily to cope with the horrors of what he saw. Fast forward to the 2012 Olympics and at this point, Gary felt ‘broken'. He got into an altercation with a member of the public whilst off-duty and he was suspended from work and given the ultimatum of either resigning or going to a tribunal and risk losing his pension. Sadly, after 11 years of policing, he made the decision to resign and his mental health spiralled further. He made a plan to take his own life and came extremely close to doing it. Thankfully, something stopped him from doing it. He told his wife and that moment of rock bottom was the start of his journey to recovery to where he is now and the work he does with PTSD999. In this episode we discuss his career in the military, police to the work he does with PTSD999 now, PTSD and the mental health state of men like him in the emergency services. For Gary's mental health, he was sexually abused by two men in his childhood, firstly a babysitter when he was just six years old and the second was a football coach when he was eight years old. This abuse had a monumental impact on Gary and were suppressed memories for many years. We discuss this, the suicide attempt he made after resigning from the British Transport Police, the dark and ugly side of mental illness and the recovery journey to where he is now. Hear Me, See Me Podcast with Gary Hayes, Co-Founder of PTSD999.As a diagnosed PTSD sufferer, I was excited to have Gary Hayes from PTSD999 on the podcast. It was everything I expected and more. We had an amazing chat and at the end felt we had made a really brotherly bond. PTSD999 was set up in 2015 by friends Gary and Simon, both of whom served within the Military and Public Sector. As a result of their duties both have Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. They realised that there wasn't any widely available accessible support for those serving, or who had served, within the Emergency Services, and their families, living with PTSD.So they set about creating an organisation that could provide support, source and fund treatment, training and raise awareness of the impact PTSD has on a persons life.PTSD999 has been operating as a not-for profit social enterprise since formation. We are committed to supporting our Emergency Service workers and our aim is to ensure that awareness of PTSD within the Emergency Services grows and the Stigma associated with it, and other mental health conditions, is broken. Gary Hayes is a former British football player, veteran, police officer and the man behind PTSD 999. We discuss his journey into football, being the victim of two sexual predators, joining the Green Jackets, being assigned to the morgue after the 2005 London bombings, his own powerful mental health story, his non-profit and so much more.
Gary Hayes was born in the East End of London. His family moved to Dagenham where he was raised by his parents who still live in the area.At the age of 17 Gary was preparing himself to join the Royal Green Jackets. Having joined the Army he served in Germany and left the military after 3 years.Gary ran his own business and was involved in the close protection of a number of high profile figures from the world of sport and entertainment including Jerry Lee Lewis. His business partner removed the companies assets and left the UK. Gary was left to deal with the aftermath.Gary eventually joined the British Transport Police and his career was exciting and full of the incidents you would expect for the British Police at that time, until 7th July 2005. This was the day that terrorists carried out their attacks on the transport network in London, a date that will remain in Gary's mind for the rest of his life. Following the attack he was tasked with assisting in the temporary mortuary where the bodies of the bombings were taken following their recovery from the Tube and buses that had been targeted by the terrorists. Gary describes how he assisted in the identification process and hands the remains of eh cowards who carried out the atrocity to the hostile undertakers.During the interview Gary shares his views on stop and search and includes his personal knowledge of knife crime and dealing with the victim of a fatal stabbing. He will also describe how he was involved in an off duty incident that resulted in him standing trial for assault where he was convicted. This resulted in him losing his job despite the fact he had PTSD. The judge identified that he was suffering and as a result gary did not go to prison. The way in which his forces professional standards team conducted themselves still causes Gary anxiety.Gary is the Co-Founder of PTSD999 and gives talks and guidance to organisation including the Police, Military and Fire servicewww.ptsd999.org.uk/www.facebook.com/ptsd999officialhttps://twitter.com/ptsd999The team can be contacted on 07957 252955 Hosted on Acast. This week I am happy to say the my guest is Gary Hayes from the charity PTSD 999. Beware this episode is raw and intense, as Gary shares his journey from soldier to police officer, to starting this charity. Gary's experiences include the London 7/7 terror attacks, which had a profound impact upon him and contributed massively to his own PTSD. Gary offers unprecedented insight into his mental health and all of the trauma he has experienced. This all led his starting the charity offering specialist trauma based therapy for emergency service workers. This is an amazing heart felt episode. What kind of an impact can a single sermon have on the lives of people? Not much, or a great deal? Historically, in 1095 AD Pope Urban II preached a sermon in Clermont, France, that launched the bloodshed of the Crusades to the Holy Land. Not only were hideous atrocities committed, the legacy of that sermon resonates down through the centuries. Even today, Christians, Jews and Muslims alike are still living in the shadow of the actions caused by--one sermon. In the second half of "Preaching with a Bias," Gary and I examine in more detail the sociological impact of sermons on the lives of ordinary churchgoers, and how the use--or abuse--of Scripture can lead to a lot of toxic theology that does incredible damage in the lives of people. We'll also take a look at the legacy of fundamentalist preaching and interpretation of the Bible, and how certain theological and interpretative commitments work themselves out in the real world.
What effect does listening to years of sermons have on a person's psyche, behavior, and mental health? In this episode of the newly-named "MindShift" podcast (formerly "The Preacher's Forum podcast"), Gary Hayes and I tackle the subject of preaching, and its effects on people. If you're a preacher, then you will benefit from this episode! Question your biases, presuppositions and hermeneutical commitments. If you are a listener of sermons in churches, then you will also benefit from this episode! Deconstruct your beliefs in God, the Bible, and what you hear regularly from the pulpit.

Reflect on the irony of the statement, "Leaving the church...to find God." And what is the church, after all, but a collection of individuals striving to do just that--find God? To find themselves, to discover their own humanity? It's hard to separate out, however, the oftentimes sordid history of the church in the past, and also what it has become today. In the midst of the formulaic religion, the rote performances, and the whole affair of "going through the motions," God can get lost in the mix. Therefore you may find yourself contemplating the radical--and ironic--notion of "leaving the church...to find God." He's not in the black-and-white, bullet-point doctrinal statements or theological tomes; he's not even to be found in the pages of Scripture. He's a real, living person, with whom we can actually have a relationship. But sadly, so many people have to leave the church...to find him. Join Gary and I for the second half of this thought-provoking and challenging episode!
Why would anyone even contemplate the idea of leaving the church in order to find God? Surely the church is where one goes to...find God, right? But the truth is that for many, God can easily get lost in the midst of all of the rituals and traditions, formulaic worship, toxic or just bad theology, and rote practices. Besides, isn't God everywhere? He doesn't actually dwell in a building made by human hands. So for some, it may well be that in the journey to "find God," that they may well have to leave the church in order to do just that. Perhaps new forms of thinking, new experiences and freedom, are to be found outside the walls of a local church. Why did one fish turn to the other at fish church on a Sunday and say: "I'm sure glad the ocean turned up today." What does that have to do with our views of God? Explore the subject of theoclasm with us: It has to do with challenging, deconstructing, and possibly even tearing down our received, inherited views of God. How do you see God? As an angry father? Or is he disappointed with your lack of effort and behavior? Possibly you don't believe in God...or perhaps your views are in the process of changing and evolving. In this conversation with Gary Hayes, we delve into the subject of God, and challenge some of the more traditional and received views of the Almighty. Don't miss this conversation--you'll be glad you investigated this subject with us!

"If I go down a blind alley, it's only because I went there looking for more of God. If I don't find him, I'll come back out and keep going!" Wise words from Mr Gary Hayes, describing what it means to have a "theoclasm." Listen in to Part 2 of our conversation, where Gary describes his transition out of a cult-like fundamentalist church experience in London--where he was one of the leaders, no less--and into new and challenging understandings of God, theology, and Christianity.
"I'd rather that an unsafe building be torn down, and rebuilt, than carry on living in it--just because I don't want change." Wise words from Gary Hayes, this week's "British Accents" episode on The Preacher's Forum podcast! What's a "theoclasm"? Have you had a "theoclastic experience" yourself? And what does all this have to do with the teachings of Father Richard Rohr? If you don't know what those terms mean, or what the connection with Rohr might be about, then please listen in for Part 1 of my conversation. It was recorded live from the Root Coffee Shop in downtown Liverpool, England, with Gary Hayes, a teaching colleague and friend.
