Whenever we are na-ve enough to think -I would never deny my Lord,- we need to be reminded of the prediction of Jesus that all would deny Him.-1. Pride- everyone messes up, why do you still think that you are special-- -v.26-27--2. Grace- Jesus is not done with those who mess up, so are you still trying to earn something or prove something-- -v.28--3. A humbling lesson- have you yet learned the difference between being emphatic and being cautious-- Are you still denying your denying-- -v.29-31--Why is it important to see ourselves accurately---What gain is seeing our weakness-- Pv.16-18,1Cor.10-12,1Pet. 2-21-When does sovereignty comfort us-- Is.53-4 Ps.77-19, Pv.28-26-How does God advance His kingdom with such people-- Jn 21-15-17

Together, with Fr. Mike, we begin the section of the Catechism examining the liturgy. We start with an exploration of the questions of “why” the liturgy and “what” the liturgy is. Fr. Mike explains that it is through the liturgy that we are able to encounter the grace that Jesus Christ has won for us. He emphasizes that it is the liturgy that gives us access to God, himself. Today's readings are Catechism paragraphs 1066-1075. This episode has been found to be in conformity with the Catechism by the Institute on the Catechism, under the Subcommittee on the Catechism, USCCB. Do we love the Church? Some of us might struggle with that idea, but Fr. Mike explains that if we are to love and live in accordance with the heart of Jesus, we must love what he loves. Jesus, the bridegroom, loves his bride, the Church, so we must love the Church. We also learn that the sacraments are not only signs but also the very instruments by which the Holy Spirit gives us the grace of Christ. Today's readings are Catechism paragraphs 772-780. The Cycle of Grace Jesus lived a distinctive pattern of life. Mark 1:29-39 Stage One: __________________________ Mt 3:17. "This is my son, in whom I am well pleased." By reversing the cycle we seek to ______________________ in order to feel ________________________ hoping that significance through achievement will _______________________ us and maybe we will find ______________________. Instead of living in a cycle of grace, we often live in a cycle of _______________, which is a recipe for weariness and burnout.
"The Gospel of Matthew … the book they chose to be first in our New Testament … it opens up with this genealogy of Jesus. And it's a weird genealogy … on purpose, I think. • You see, Jesus didn't track his family tree so he could “find himself.” That's ludicrous! How could his “human ancestors” make the Son of God any more or less? • And … even though Jesus' genealogy skips over some guys, it's not the bad guys they leave out. In fact, the genealogy of Jesus is pretty much a rogue's gallery, a collection of messed-up people… like you guys. • And … someone inserted all these ladies into the genealogy of Jesus! How scandalous was that! Especially since every one of the ladies in the family tree of Jesus had pretty scandalous stories … like some of you ladies. So, we've been tracking this “trail of grace” through the Old Testament story leading right to Jesus … whom the apostle John describes as 100% truth and 100% grace. And I am going to wrap up this fantastic story by focusing on one of the most boring passages in the Bible … the genealogy of Jesus. And maybe … maybe … if you'll lean in anyway … perhaps you'll discover things about Jesus that will change your life. So … here goes." Stephen "Doc" Pattison

Exodus 34:5-7 Then the Lord came down in a cloud and stood there with him; and he called out his own name, Yahweh. The Lord passed in front of Moses, calling out, “Yahweh! The Lord! The God of compassion and mercy! I am slow to anger and filled with unfailing love and faithfulness. I lavish unfailing love to a thousand generations. I forgive iniquity, rebellion, and sin. But I do not excuse the guilty. I lay the sins of the parents upon their children and grandchildren; the entire family is affected— even children in the third and fourth generations.” 1) Story of Grace - God rescues from slavery - God and the people at mount Sini - God is faithful to an unfaithful people 2) God is gracious. - חֵן (ḥēn) favor, grace, mercy or delight - χάρις (charis). Gracious gift 3) Receiving and living with Grace - Becoming people of Grace - Jesus is Gods grace revealed John1:16-18 From his abundance we have all received one gracious blessing after another. For the law was given through Moses, but God's unfailing love and faithfulness came through Jesus Christ. No one has ever seen God. But the unique One, who is himself God, is near to the Father's heart. He has revealed God to us. Communion: 1 Corinthians 11:23-26 On the night when he was betrayed, the Lord Jesus took some bread and gave thanks to God for it. Then he broke it in pieces and said, “This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” In the same way, he took the cup of wine after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant between God and his people—an agreement confirmed with my blood. Do this in remembrance of me as often as you drink it.” For every time you eat this bread and drink this cup, you are announcing the Lord's death until he comes again.
The Law cannot save us. The Law will reveal our need for a Savior.

We've said a lot about living a Jesus centered life and how it takes deliberate intentional effort. If we're not careful, that could to a lot of striving ... a lot of trying to get it right ... to doing more and more, so we can live Jesus centered. But that misses the importance and power of grace. Living Jesus centered happens in the circle of grace. So in this final episode on living Jesus centered, we explore how grace is the key to the whole thing! Grace= unmerited, undeserved favour. Abundance = what exceeds normal expectations = remains = it is sufficient = sustaining through the end. “abundant” (pleonazo) = to superabound, to increase, be augmented, exceeding Grace promted God to sacrifice his only begotten son for our sins to save us from death. We Can Hear Declarations of Many Ways to Salvation and Eternal Life - Not So; By God’s Grace, Jesus Is the Only Way to Your Salvation and Eternal Life MESSAGE SUMMARY: Jesus is The Door and The Gate by which you must enter the Kingdom of God – Jesus is the only way. In John 10:9-10, Jesus tells us: “I am the door. If anyone enters by me, he will be saved and will go in and out and find pasture. The thief {Satan} comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly." Also, Jesus said, in Matthew 7:13-14, that He was "the Narrow Gate", and whomever enters the Kingdom through Him will be saved and have Eternal Life: {You} “Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few.". Jesus’ Crucifixion and Resurrection are the events, of about two thousand years ago, that provided us all, by God’s Grace, with access to The Narrow Gate, which is Jesus. Through Jesus’ death on the cross for your sins and His Resurrection, He has given you eternal life if you choose to enter The Narrow Gate. You may ask: “How do I enter this ‘Narrow Door’ of Jesus?’. By God’s Grace, you can enter Eternal Life through Jesus with your true belief and faith in Jesus as God in combination with your prayerful confession of your sins to God. With your belief, faith, and confession, you have entered through the narrow and only door to your Salvation. However, and after your entry through the door, you must continue, in your faith and obedience, to follow Jesus – this is the only Way, and it is The Way provided by God’s Grace to the Followers of Jesus through Jesus. TODAY’S AFFIRMATION: Today, I affirm that because I am in Jesus Christ, I will not be ashamed of the Gospel. I will not be ashamed of the Gospel of Jesus Christ for it is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes (including me). (From Romans 1:16). He Comes To Cleanse... And Heal... To Minister His Grace... JESUS SAVES... JESUS IS LORD!
As Jesus Was Taking All Sin Through God’s Grace, Jesus Cried: “My God, My God, why have you forsaken me?” MESSAGE SUMMARY: When, on the cross, Jesus cried out: “My God, My God, why have you forsaken me?” (Matthew 27:46, b), At the time of Jesus crucifixion and earthly death was the only time, in all eternity, that Jesus had been separated from the Father. Jesus had always known perfect fellowship with the Father; but when He took on all our sin, His fellowship with God was broken. God, the Father, had forsaken Jesus because God cannot have anything to do with sin. Paul, in Romans 5:15, summarizes Jesus’ sacrifice and the resulting gift of God’s Grace available to us from our faith: “But the free gift is not like the trespass. For if many died through one man's trespass, much more have the grace of God and the free gift by the grace of that one man Jesus Christ abounded for many.”. Again, Paul reminds us, in 2 Corinthians 5:21, of the Grace resulting from Jesus’ sacrifice: "For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.". TODAY’S AFFIRMATION: Today, I affirm that, because I am in Jesus Christ, I will live as Jesus would. (Philippians 1:27). “I can do everything through Him who gives me strength.”. (Philippians 4:14). SCRIPTURE REFERENCE (ESV): 2 Corinthians 4:7-15; Romans 4:16-17; Romans 5:15-21; Psalms 88:1-18. Today we see Paul's last really theological writing, before getting into more of the application portion of Romans. He is taking on the question, “Why then all of the suffering of Israel? Why the law; did God hate Israel, or want to punish her? Was he making a mockery of the Jews?” Paul's answer to that question was definitely a “No…not at all!” The Jews were part of the message…it was through their faithful attempts to live out the law that we get evidence that it isn't possible to pull it off. The Jews were the most well-behaved, God-fearing, and God-supported people…and they still couldn't pull it off. That isn't an indictment on them…it is evidence that people aren't able to do it…we aren't capable of fully living like Jesus. Further, it was through their sacrifice and their toil that the rest of the world can now be saved; the Jewish people paved the way for the rest of us Gentiles. God wasn't hating on anyone…He was helping us to understand. Think about how you raise your kids…sometimes you know the best thing you can do is to let them figure something out on their own. If it isn't something that is life-threatening, this is actually, usually, a decent strategy. We let them fumble around and eventually figure certain things out. In doing that, they not only learn how to do something, but they learn that they don't know everything. It is in fumbling around that we gain appreciation for someone having the answer. That's part of the reason that most people, as they get older, start to be more and more open to the wisdom of others…because we know we don't have time to figure everything out! The Jews were fumbling around for 1500 years so the rest of us can just accept the fact that we aren't going to be good enough to EARN God's Grace…Jesus is really our best and ONLY shot at it! We pick on the Pharisees and the Sadducees and the Jews of the Old Testament a lot as we read the Bible and try to understand our faith…because we see a lot of examples of how NOT to do it. But, in reality, there are MANY stories of faithful Jews who were doing their best and who eventually turned to Jesus that we don't know about. They were patiently waiting, and their Messiah came. Today I am reminded how fortunate I am to be on THIS side of Jesus' life…that I don't have to endure what many of those Jews had to endure. Today, I am hard on myself because I don't live up to God's standards, but at least I know deep down that God isn't also doing the same thing…He isn't judging me based on those standards. At least I know, as hard as I am on myself, that God sees me in a different light. I am so thankful for that, and for the years and years of sacrifice of the Jews that came before me.

What is essential in your life right now? Grace (Jesus) is the door through which all of life is found. Grace isn’t just a concept, He’s a person, and His name is Jesus. When was the last time you just said, “God, I need your grace today”?

Freedom to be Instruments of Grace Jesus shares with us His life purpose. Luke 4:18-19 “The Spirit of the LORD is upon me, for he has anointed me to bring Good News to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim that captives will be released, that the blind will see, that the oppressed will
"Have You Ever Doubted?" John 20:24-31 Intro: In my experience, there are at least two types of doubters. One type just likes to doubt things to be argumentative without an open and teachable mind. The other type of doubter is a person who has legitimate concerns and questions, but is open to discussion and proof. Thomas, the doubter, is the second type of doubter. Unfortunately, some bad teaching and preaching in some churches don't give any room to people who have legitimate concerns or doubts. When we have an explicit or implicit agenda that promotes this type of church culture, we don't give people a chance to learn, grow, and embrace their own genuine faith. It is not unusual for Christ followers to go through periods of doubt. I believe that could be a healthy process if we handle the person with the love and wisdom of God. In this passage, John gives us some great insights into this issue of legitimate doubt. When we experience doubt: 1. Don't Try to Handle Doubt Alone 1. Common mistakes: 1. Withdraw for the fellowship 2. Relying on our own wisdom and understanding 3. Ignoring loving, godly people 2. Keep an Open Mind and Heart to Jesus 1. Illus: "Doubt is the hammer that breaks the window clouded with human fancies and lets in the pure light." George MacDonald 2. Ask honest questions and make honest statements 3. Jesus will break through with His truth and light 1. Grace: Jesus gives Thomas the opportunity for a personal touch. 1. Have we ever experienced those moments when Jesus gives us a personal touch? Those moments are incredibly precious. 3. When You Work Through Your Doubt, Be Obedient 1. Worship 1. The Deity and Lordship of Christ 1. With a humble heart 2. With an obedient heart, mind, and will 3. Stop Doubting 2. Go forward by faith Closing: So, how are we doing today? First, do we give liberty to people who have legitimate doubt? Do we give liberty to ourselves when we have legitimate doubts? Are we honest about our doubts to God and ourselves? Are we willing to approach our doubt with an open mind and heart to Jesus? When Jesus, through the Word and Holy Spirit, breaks through the doubt, are we willing to worship Him and go forward in obedience by faith?

He who believes in Me, as the Scripture says, From within him there shall flow rivers of living water.' He said this, however, of the Spirit, Whom they who believed in Him were to receive; for the Spirit had not yet been given, since Jesus had not yet been glorified" (John 7, 37-39) The Holy Spirit is the third Person of the Blessed Trinity. Jesus sent him to us so that we may have the living water of the Holy Spirit to nourish our soul. Symbols of the Holy Spirt: (1) the dove, a symbol of love; (2) tongues of fire, also symbols of love; (3) the wind, the "breath of God," a symbol of the unseen power of love. Relational Drift and Reconciliation . . . You can’t reconcile what you don’t see as broken. : Her story, His story, & God’s story Every Marriage Tells a Story . . . God’s story for marriage is far better than our culture’s The way in which you reconcile broken relationships on earth is by following what God has done in reconciling us to Himself through Christ. Grace—Jesus gives grace even though I am undeserving. “For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.” Ephesians 2:8-9 I am willing to give grace even though I don’t feel you deserve Why? Because the gospel of grace reconciles what is broken. Humility—Jesus put my needs before His own. “Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though He was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied Himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.” Philippians 2:5-8 I am willing to put your needs before my “Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.” Philippians 2:3-4 I am willing to admit my faults and my flaws. Why? Because the gospel of grace always leads me to Christ-like humility. Forgiveness—Jesus has not held my offense against me. “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.” Luke 23:34 I choose to forgive those who have offended (Matthew 18:21-35) “ . . . bearing with one another and, if one of you has a complaint against another, forgiving each other, as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive.” Colossians 3:13 “Be even-tempered, content with second place, quick to forgive an offense. Forgive as quickly and completely as the Master forgave you.” (The Message) Why? Because the gospel of grace does not keep a ledger of offense. : Hosea Honest Evaluation . . . What is the real story that my marriage is telling? What is God really saying to me about me? Who will I talk to, who is trustworthy and spiritually mature, in order to gain a truer perspective of me and my marriage?
