Grace & Truth: The Anatomy of DisgustPastor Kent LandhuisTHEME - We are defiled by what comes out of our hearts. TEXT - Matthew 15:10-281. Truth: Jesus was unapologetically offensive.Matthew 15:12Matthew 15:1-92. Truth: Evil comes from the heart.Matthew 15:10-20Luke 6:65Proverbs 4:233. Truth: We are easily disgusted by “them.”Matthew 15:21-224. Grace: Jesus is not disgusted by the things that disgust us.Matthew 15:23-28Luke 18:9-14NEXT STEPS1. Guard your heart.2. Don't be disgusted by appearances.3. Give thanks that there is room at the table for you.GO DEEPER - Eating with JesusWhile He was reclining at the table in the house, many tax collectors and sinners came as guests to eat with Jesus and His disciples. When the Pharisees saw this, they asked His disciples, “Why does your Teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?” ~ Matthew 9:10-11.Jesus gathered for dinner in Matthew's home with Matthew's tax collecting buddies. Matthew made a profit off Rome's oppression of his people, and so, the only people who approved of him were other people making similar choices. The word “sinners” in the gospels described those who were likely non-law-observant Jews who did not tithe, sacrifice, or observe the rites of purity that were meant to set God's people apart. It also described those who were diseased, injured, or contaminated. These people were outcasts. Outsiders. Matthew, who had just been called by Jesus, immediately brought others to Jesus. Rather than drop his friends, he invited them to come meet Jesus. They wanted to meet Jesus AND Jesus wanted to meet them. When Jesus accepted Matthew's invitation to eat with these people, it was scandalous. Eating together implied sharing not just food but something deeper. Even strangers around a table became something more. They became acceptable.Jesus extended grace to people thought to be unworthy and THAT disgusted the Pharisees. Jesus, motivated by love, associated with sinners: that was his mission. In this moment, Jesus showed his heart. It was (and is) to share the table with those who are far from him. Jesus longs to share himself with us. AND with everyone! That was (and is) the true identity of Jesus.
Grace & Truth: God Reigns Above All! Pastor Steve PooleTEXT - Matthew 11:28-30 (NIV) - “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”GRACE - Jesus offers rest to all who come to Him.TRUTH - Jesus was unapologetically offensive.“And blessed is the one who is not offended by me.” ~ Matt. 11:6TRUTH - Jesus is offensive because He doesn't meet our expectations. For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, ‘He has a demon.' The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Look at him! A glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!' Yet wisdom is justified by her deeds.” ~ Matthew 11:18-19 ESVNow then, why do you try to test God by putting on the necks of Gentiles a yoke that neither we nor our ancestors have been able to bear? ~ Acts 15:10 NIVThe HEAVY yoke of Jesus? Matthew 5:17, 21-22, 27-29, 43-44GRACE - In Jesus, we find rest from sin and shame. But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved— and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, so that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. ~ Ephesians 2:4-7 ESVThe sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. ~ 1 Corinthians 15:56-57 ESVNEXT STEPS1. Come to Jesus for salvation through faith.2. Come to Jesus and let Him help carry your burdens.3. Do less this week and rest more.4. Continue reading the gospels with us this week and ask God to show you where you have false expectations of Jesus.
Jesus consistently broke social norms to reveal God's heart, as seen in Luke 7:36-50 when He welcomed a 'sinful woman' who anointed His feet with perfume and tears. While Simon the Pharisee judged both Jesus and the woman, Jesus used this moment to teach about forgiveness and true worship. He highlighted how the woman's extravagant display of love demonstrated her faith in His grace, contrasting with Simon's prideful restraint. This story challenges us to examine whether our own worship reflects the magnitude of forgiveness we've received and calls us to welcome the broken with the same scandalous grace Jesus offers.

In this message, REO Town Venue Director Hezekiah Trevino explores the concept of grace as a free, unearned gift from God. He challenges listeners to understand grace not as a one-time transaction but as a continuous, transformative experience that sustains and empowers people. Trevino argues that grace is meant to be both received and extended to others, regardless of whether they seem to "deserve" it. He emphasizes that grace is about unconditional love and forgiveness, not performance or earning favor.Subscribe to AfterWords on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you listen to podcasts.Download a copy of the Exodus JournalVisit us online: rivchurch.comFollow us on InstagramSend us feedback: podcast@rivchurch.com

Whenever we are na-ve enough to think -I would never deny my Lord,- we need to be reminded of the prediction of Jesus that all would deny Him.-1. Pride- everyone messes up, why do you still think that you are special-- -v.26-27--2. Grace- Jesus is not done with those who mess up, so are you still trying to earn something or prove something-- -v.28--3. A humbling lesson- have you yet learned the difference between being emphatic and being cautious-- Are you still denying your denying-- -v.29-31--Why is it important to see ourselves accurately---What gain is seeing our weakness-- Pv.16-18,1Cor.10-12,1Pet. 2-21-When does sovereignty comfort us-- Is.53-4 Ps.77-19, Pv.28-26-How does God advance His kingdom with such people-- Jn 21-15-17

Together, with Fr. Mike, we begin the section of the Catechism examining the liturgy. We start with an exploration of the questions of “why” the liturgy and “what” the liturgy is. Fr. Mike explains that it is through the liturgy that we are able to encounter the grace that Jesus Christ has won for us. He emphasizes that it is the liturgy that gives us access to God, himself. Today's readings are Catechism paragraphs 1066-1075. This episode has been found to be in conformity with the Catechism by the Institute on the Catechism, under the Subcommittee on the Catechism, USCCB. For the complete reading plan, visit ascensionpress.com/ciy Please note: The Catechism of the Catholic Church contains adult themes that may not be suitable for children - parental discretion is advised.
Do we love the Church? Some of us might struggle with that idea, but Fr. Mike explains that if we are to love and live in accordance with the heart of Jesus, we must love what he loves. Jesus, the bridegroom, loves his bride, the Church, so we must love the Church. We also learn that the sacraments are not only signs but also the very instruments by which the Holy Spirit gives us the grace of Christ. Today's readings are Catechism paragraphs 772-780. This episode has been found to be in conformity with the Catechism by the Institute on the Catechism, under the Subcommittee on the Catechism, USCCB. The Cycle of Grace Jesus lived a distinctive pattern of life. Mark 1:29-39 Stage One: __________________________ Mt 3:17. "This is my son, in whom I am well pleased." Mt. 4:1-7: Satan attacks Jesus' __________________ Stage Two: ___________________________ Examples of sustaining practices in Jesus' life: Stage Three: ____________________________ What was the significance of Jesus' life? “Whoever has seen me has seen the _____________________ “ John 14:9 The ___________ sayings John 6:35; 10:7; 11:25; 14:6; 15:1 Stage four: ______________________ How did grace flow out of Jesus' life? By reversing the cycle we seek to ______________________ in order to feel ________________________ hoping that significance through achievement will _______________________ us and maybe we will find ______________________. Instead of living in a cycle of grace, we often live in a cycle of _______________, which is a recipe for weariness and burnout.
"The Gospel of Matthew … the book they chose to be first in our New Testament … it opens up with this genealogy of Jesus. And it's a weird genealogy … on purpose, I think. • You see, Jesus didn't track his family tree so he could “find himself.” That's ludicrous! How could his “human ancestors” make the Son of God any more or less? • And … even though Jesus' genealogy skips over some guys, it's not the bad guys they leave out. In fact, the genealogy of Jesus is pretty much a rogue's gallery, a collection of messed-up people… like you guys. • And … someone inserted all these ladies into the genealogy of Jesus! How scandalous was that! Especially since every one of the ladies in the family tree of Jesus had pretty scandalous stories … like some of you ladies. So, we've been tracking this “trail of grace” through the Old Testament story leading right to Jesus … whom the apostle John describes as 100% truth and 100% grace. And I am going to wrap up this fantastic story by focusing on one of the most boring passages in the Bible … the genealogy of Jesus. And maybe … maybe … if you'll lean in anyway … perhaps you'll discover things about Jesus that will change your life. So … here goes." Stephen "Doc" Pattison

Exodus 34:5-7 Then the Lord came down in a cloud and stood there with him; and he called out his own name, Yahweh. The Lord passed in front of Moses, calling out, “Yahweh! The Lord! The God of compassion and mercy! I am slow to anger and filled with unfailing love and faithfulness. I lavish unfailing love to a thousand generations. I forgive iniquity, rebellion, and sin. But I do not excuse the guilty. I lay the sins of the parents upon their children and grandchildren; the entire family is affected— even children in the third and fourth generations.” 1) Story of Grace - God rescues from slavery - God and the people at mount Sini - God is faithful to an unfaithful people 2) God is gracious. - חֵן (ḥēn) favor, grace, mercy or delight - χάρις (charis). Gracious gift 3) Receiving and living with Grace - Becoming people of Grace - Jesus is Gods grace revealed John1:16-18 From his abundance we have all received one gracious blessing after another. For the law was given through Moses, but God's unfailing love and faithfulness came through Jesus Christ. No one has ever seen God. But the unique One, who is himself God, is near to the Father's heart. He has revealed God to us. Communion: 1 Corinthians 11:23-26 On the night when he was betrayed, the Lord Jesus took some bread and gave thanks to God for it. Then he broke it in pieces and said, “This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” In the same way, he took the cup of wine after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant between God and his people—an agreement confirmed with my blood. Do this in remembrance of me as often as you drink it.” For every time you eat this bread and drink this cup, you are announcing the Lord's death until he comes again.
The Law cannot save us. The Law will reveal our need for a Savior.

We've said a lot about living a Jesus centered life and how it takes deliberate intentional effort. If we're not careful, that could to a lot of striving ... a lot of trying to get it right ... to doing more and more, so we can live Jesus centered. But that misses the importance and power of grace. Living Jesus centered happens in the circle of grace. So in this final episode on living Jesus centered, we explore how grace is the key to the whole thing!
