The time has finally come: to kick off the new year, Tom and John finally dive into one of Canada's most storied craft producers: Chambly Quebec's own UNIBROUE. We sample 1/2 of the contents of a new variety pack. First we go over some history of the brewery before getting into the contents. To start, we sample the damn strong MAUDITE! Next up, we take things back to '67 and indulge in SAISON LIBRE. Lastly, we explore more Quebecois lore and try TROIS PISTOLES. A pretty chatty episode this time around, as we also discussed: the Montreal Canadiens; what's wrong with the NBA; defunct CHL teams; John's family lore; Generation Beta; the Quiet Revolution; and Skoal special blend. We will return soon with the second half of this box, likely following another seltzer ep. Stay tuned! Busyness often masquerades as a badge of honor, while rest feels like a relic from an old era. We cram our days with purpose and productivity, leaving little room for pause. If we're lucky, we manage to carve out a sliver of pleasure. Yet true rest—real, restorative rest—remains elusive. It's not simply a pause between obligations but a way of seeing the world, a philosophy that transforms the ordinary into the marvelous. As I ponder the importance of rest, my thoughts wander to travel—not the grand, Instagram-worthy escapades to exotic destinations, but the quieter, less celebrated journeys. For the Truman Brothers, music and faith are in their DNA. Raised in Nashville, Tennessee as sons of Latter-day Saint musician, Dan Truman (of the Grammy-winning group Diamond Rio), they spent their formative years in green rooms and tour buses as well as sacrament meetings and early-morning Seminary classes. Despite their musical upbringing, the brothers didn't really begin making music together until attending BYU, where they won the campus-wide Battle of the Bands two years in a row. Now as recording artists signed to Shadow Mountain Records, the Truman Brothers draw on their unique background to create Spirit-filled music not just for Sundays—but for every day of the week. With its energetic, pop-driven anthems, their debut album Quiet Revolution landed in the Top 10 on the iTunes Christian chart. Their songs have earned three Praiseworthy Awards presented by the LDSPMA, including “Best Original Religious Song” for their song “Oh Child". In addition to their work as a duo, the brothers are also longtime members of the Nashville Tribute Band.https://www.trumanbrothers.comhttps://www.instagram.com/trumanbrothershttps://www.tiktok.com/@thetrumanbrothershttps://www.facebook.com/trumanbrothershttps://www.youtube.com/user/trumanbrothers
On a December morning, a 62-year-old goes for a walk. There's snow on the ground and she loses her balance. She falls and fractures her wrist. This simple fracture reveals underlying osteoporosis, requiring lifelong (and expensive) medication. But as you'll learn from Dr. Richard Eastell, an endocrinologist and professor of Bone Metabolism at the University of Sheffield, this is where biosimilars come in. Biosimilars are extremely similar — hence the name — to the original biological drug they're designed to imitate. The excitement around biosimilars is that they're cheaper, making them more accessible to more people, meaning fewer fractures … better health … a better economy … and ultimately, a better quality of life.

The author Jacob Bacharach returns for a sequel to our Junk Filter episode about Denis Villeneuve's Dune, with a look at his long-awaited Dune: Part Two. Villeneuve said in interviews that he thought of Frank Herbert's novel as an allegory for the French Canadians under the thumb of the authoritarian government of Maurice Duplessis that used the Catholic Church to subjugate the Quebecois people before the Quiet Revolution of the 1960s. Jacob and I use this allegory as a jumping off point to extend the metaphor: are the Bene Gesserit the Catholic Church? Are the Fremen the FLQ? And is Paul Atreides the saviour of an independent Quebec, the Kwisatz Tabarnak? Plus: Jacob and I discuss the charms of Dune: Part Two including how the movie differs from Frank Herbert's novel, the arrival of Christopher Walken as the Emperor qnd Austin Butler as Feyd-Rautha, and our MVP Javier Bardem as Stilgar. Plus: Josh Brolin's homoerotic ode to Timothée Chalamet, the dreaded Dune Popcorn Bucket, and a look at some of the galaxy-brained responses online from people who thought Paul was supposed to be the hero of the story. A little less than a year ago, the US financial system was rocked by its first major banking drama since 2008. While the crisis was eventually contained, and only three lenders ended up collapsing, the experience re-ignited an ongoing conversation about the way we rescue troubled lenders. Not only did the Federal Reserve launch a new liquidity program called the Bank Term Funding Program as part of its support to the banking system in 2023, but regulators are now talking about changing existing facilities, including the Federal Home Loan Banks (FHLBs) and the discount window. For instance, Michael Hsu of the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency's has proposed that banks be required to tap the discount window and "pre-position" collateral at the facility, just in case they one day need it. In this episode, we speak with Steven Kelly, associate director of research at the Yale University Program on Financial Stability, about the constellation of existing emergency facilities for banks, how they've evolved over time, and the changes that could be made to them now.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Join me this week for an enlightening discussion with Priscilla Gilman, acclaimed author of the upcoming paperback release of her critically acclaimed memoir, The Critic's Daughter. Priscilla, a former professor of English literature at Yale and Vassar, brings a wealth of insight as we explore the intricacies of co-parenting and divorce. Beyond her literary achievements, Priscilla is one of my oldest friends, which adds a personal touch to our conversation. The Critic's Daughter becomes a guide on what not to do when faced with the complexities of divorce, providing a personal and poignant account of Priscilla's experiences. It's a rare opportunity to glimpse into my childhood, too, and witness the powerful narrative of Priscilla's parents' divorce – a tale of resilience, hardship, and the mistakes made during an era when people simply didn't know how to get divorced without deeply affecting their children. Learn more about Priscilla Gilman: Priscilla Gilman is a former professor of English literature at both Yale University and Vassar College and the author of The Anti-Romantic Child: A Story of Unexpected Joy (Harper), and The Critic's Daughter (Norton). The Anti-Romantic Child was excerpted in Newsweek magazine and featured on the cover of its international edition. It received starred reviews in Publishers Weekly and Booklist, was an NPR Morning Edition Must-Read, Slate‘s Book of the Week, one of the year's Best Books for the Leonard Lopate Show and The Chicago Tribune, and one of five nominees for a Books for a Better Life Award for Best First Book. Andrew Solomon called it “rapturously beautiful and deeply moving, profound, and marvelous.” Gilman's second book, The Critic's Daughter, was published by W.W. Norton in February 2023 (paperback February 2024); a memoir about her relationship with her brilliant and complicated father, the late drama and literary critic Richard Gilman, it is set in the heyday of intellectual culture in New York of the 1970s and 80s. The Critic's Daughter received starred reviews in Kirkus and Booklist; Nick Hornby called it “Beautiful: honest, raw, careful, soulful, brave and incredibly readable.” It was a Washington Post Best Book of 2023, a New York Times Book Critics' Favorite Book of 2023, one of the Los Angeles Times' book critic and Book Maven Bethanne Patrick's Top 10 Non-Fiction Books of 2023, one of the "18 Books Lilith magazine Loved in 2023," and 3rd on Bookreporter's Harvey Freedenburg's Favorite Books of 2023. Since 2011, Gilman has taught literature and writing in countless settings. She was the parenting/education advice columnist for #1 New York Times bestselling author Susan Cain's Quiet Revolution website. She speaks frequently at schools, conferences, and organizations about parenting, education, autism, and the arts. In 2018, she became a certified Mindfulness and Loving-Kindness meditation teacher. Trauma plays a significant role in overall health and should not be overlooked in the healing process. Childhood trauma and parental relationships can have long-lasting effects on emotional well-being. Individuals have different levels of tolerance for toxins, which can impact their overall health. The pulling down exercise is a powerful technique for trauma release and can help individuals observe and process their emotions. Pulling down energy is a powerful concept that can help in healing and is often easier for people to grasp than pushing energy. Chiropractic work can play a significant role in healing by realigning the structure and improving posture. Trauma can have a lasting impact on posture and structure, and addressing these misalignments can be an important part of the healing process. Dreams can provide insights into unresolved traumas and emotions that need to be processed and healed. Choosing life experiences and going through trauma can be part of a spiritual growth journey. Ego death and trauma release are challenging but essential aspects of the healing process. Mineral balancing can offer a systematic and safer approach to healing compared to psychedelics. Faith and religion can provide support and guidance in the healing process, but it is important to focus on the program and the body's needs. When experiencing emotional releases, it is best to give oneself time and space to process the emotions and avoid making hasty decisions. Practicing self-love, self-forgiveness, and the pulling down exercise can be helpful in navigating trauma and emotional releases. Emotional releases are usually intense but relatively short-lived compared to physical detox reactions. The healing process can be unpredictable and may manifest in unexpected ways. Healing involves releasing old physical and emotional traumas. Humans have the ability to endure a significant amount of trauma, but modern society's nervous systems are diminishing. There is a revolution happening, and it is important to opt out of society and build a parallel society. There is a growing interest in localized living, local food, and 3D printing. For Quebec's first century as a province, the Catholic Church held an immense amount of control over everything from media and education to health care and social services. Beginning in the 1940s, a series of events happened to bring change. That change came quickly in the 1960s, during the era called The Quiet Revolution. The radical left began to take control of the United States Republic in 1897. Foundations set up by the Rockefeller, Carnegie and Dewey families began to influence politics, academia, news media, corporate America and healthcare. Soon after, citizens who identified as radical left activists began to get involved in our local levels of government. Accellerated by radical leftist President Franklin Roosevelt, our courts were soon far-left leaning and judicial overreach and legislating from the bench became common. The American people had lost their rights to self govern and determine their own destiny. This endeavor, by the radical left, is called "The Quiet Revolution" because it ushered them into power without a shot being fired.Today, we on the Right Side, the Conservative side, need to engage in our own Quiet Revolution.

Have you ever felt like your introversion has left you feeling inferior because you choose to observe rather than speak up? How can introverts find balance in solitude and simultaneously be in a community with others? Our heart-centered guests on this week's episode of On This Walk are two of my past walking partners, Jenny Wiley and Michael Smith. They both have experience working with others in their respective positions and helping communities of individuals find their purpose and fulfillment. Also, as people with introverted qualities, they know the struggle to find a balance between solitude and socialization. Today, we're unpacking that challenge and exploring how meditation, boundaries, and permission can allow us to find safety in ourselves and our identities. In This Episode (0:25) The importance of finding the natural balance in introversion (8:50) The main reason Susan Cain's book, Quiet, spoke to Jenny (14:48) Why we must balance the need to be with people and the need for solitude (19:49) The layers of beauty that emerge when we set boundaries surrounding our time and energy (23:22) Why we have to work through the challenging feelings that can come when we're quiet (29:28) The major milestone that balance and meditation can help us reach (34:15) The valuable give and take that comes when we turn toward the practice of meditation (43:30) The power to cultivate a sense of safety is within YOU (51:28) Why permission is at the heart of practical boundaries Notable Quotes “Now I'm like, ‘Bring on the yoga! Bring on the mindfulness movement!' That's totally my jam. But thinking about slowing down enough to feel exactly what was going on in my life at the time, and it's still even hard now sometimes, but slowing down to feel all of that, because I was experiencing a lot of shame and judgment around what I should be feeling at that time, it was often very intense for me to slow down and feel those things. Because not only was I slowing down and feeling them, I was judging them too in that quiet space. And that judgment added a layer of pain that now I know was just not even necessary.” – Jenny (25:39) “There's one really important energy that we need to embody and live, and that is the energy of permission and giving ourselves permission. When we are not creating boundaries in the way that our true self might be asking us to create boundaries, it's usually because we are not giving ourselves permission to do more of something or less of something. And it's usually often around early childhood experiences, the way that we grew up, traumas in our past, and the fears that are attached to that.” – Michael (52:25) Our Guests Jenny Wiley specializes in community coaching and helping organizations rebuild, reenergize, and grow. She currently serves as Director of Programming & Community Growth for the Institute for Professional Excellence in Coaching (iPEC), which works with committed individuals to help them reach their goals, dreams, and realize their potential. Doctoral-trained therapist and healing practitioner Michael Smith is the founder of Empath Connection. As a leader in mind-body holistic healing for nearly two decades, Michael has personally coached thousands of individuals to make stronger connections between mind, body, and spirit. Susan Cain (@susancain) is, in her own words, an "unlikely" award-winning speaker, and bestselling author of Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can't Stop Talking. Her latest book is Bittersweet: How Sorrow and Longing Make Us Whole. [Note: This is a previously broadcast episode from the vault that we felt deserved a fresh pass through your earholes!] What We Discuss with Susan Cain: How “quiet” came to be a pejorative term as the West urbanized and placed more value on personality (extroversion) over character (introversion). Better ways to understand our introverted friends (or selves). Action steps for introverts to become more social. Why being an introvert might actually be an advantage — in social situations, negotiation, and creative pursuits. Why brainstorming doesn't work and is mostly a social exercise vs. a creative one.
