Grace & Truth: A new heart and spiritPastor Steve PooleTEXT: Ezekiel 36:22-36GRACE: God will save, restore, forgive, bless and establish His people.TRUTH: God restores and blesses His people to bring glory to His name.LEV & RUAKH“...Character, personality, will, mind are modern terms which all reflect something of the meaning of ‘heart'...” (Banwell)“...ruakh is used to talk about humans, it describes their breath and core qualities.” (Schlimm)GRACE: God offers a new heart and His Spirit to ALL who believe in Jesus.NEXT STEPS1. Believe in Jesus and receive a new lev and ruakh by God's grace.2. Consider how God has changed your heart (lev) since your salvation and share a story of God's faithfulness with someone.3. Continue reading Ezekiel, following this guide to interpret and apply God's word to your lifeGO DEEPERA Brief Guide to Apocalyptic ProphecyBooks like Ezekiel, Daniel, and Revelation are filled with weird symbols and visions. The authors reveal divine truths through imagery that invites us to pay attention to several layers. Remember this:Focus on the historical context. The first layer is always the message the author wanted the immediate audience to grasp.Next study the symbols and imagery as they are used throughout the Bible. The meaning of these symbols remains consistent throughout the Bible. The next layer is to understand what these passages teach us about God. And in particular, how these prophecies are fulfilled in Jesus. The final layer asks how these prophecies might be fulfilled again today or in the future.Be Careful:Don't lose the big picture of the battle between good and evil and God's ultimate victory over evil.Avoid over-interpreting every detail; instead, focus on the prophetic themes of hope and the establishment of God's kingdom. Do not interpret symbolic language literally. The authors describe complex ideas in terms that would have been understandable to the original audience. Resist the temptation to get carried away by elaborate schemes that assign a specific modern meaning to every symbol. When we read these books we take the authors at their word when they explain what they hope to tell us. Ezekiel is clear in chapter 1 verse 1: “I saw visions of God.” John is clear in Revelations 1:1 “The revelation of Jesus”

We're now up to the fourth spiritual accounting, which focuses on appreciating a gift from God that exists outside of ourselves: the Torah . The author of Hovot HaLevavot , Rabbi Bachya ibn Pekudah, explains that the Torah is meant to awaken us, to bring life to us in this world and the next. The Torah is described as "honored and faithful" ( נכבדת נאמנה ). As we say in Tehillim , "The testimony of God is faithful" ( עדות ה' נאמנה ). The Torah's loyalty and trustworthiness serve several crucial purposes: It Removes Our Spiritual Blindness: The Mesillat Yesharim by Rabbi Moshe Chaim Luzzatto compares a person who goes through life without their spiritual eyes open to a blind man walking on the edge of a cliff. The only thing that can remove this spiritual blindness is the Torah, which "brings us to be enlightened" ( תורה מביא לידי זהירות ). It Burns Away Foolishness: The Torah has the power to burn away a person's foolishness. This concept is illustrated by a story in Navi where a prophet sends foxes with torches through fields to burn them. Similarly, when a person teaches Torah to the masses, they are burning away their foolishness. It Enlightens Our Eyes: Even when we're not blind, darkness can obscure our path. The Torah lights our way, as we say, "Enlighten our eyes with Your Torah" ( והאר עינינו בתורתך ). It Brings Us Closer to God's Will: As we say, "Return us, our Father, to Your Torah" ( השיבנו אבינו לתורתך ), and then, "and bring us close, our King, to Your service" ( וקרבנו מלכנו לעבודתך ). We can't serve God or know what He wants until we learn His Torah. It Reveals God's Truth: God gave us a "Torah of Truth" ( תורת אמת ). Through it, we come to know God's truth and His very existence. It Guides Our Actions: The Torah tells us what we need to do in this world, giving us the tools for success in this life and the next. This is the meaning of the verse in Tehillim , "The Torah of God is perfect; it restores the soul" ( תורת ה' תמימה משיבת נפש ), and "it gladdens the heart" ( משמחי לב ). The Gift of Torah The Hovot HaLevavot then uses a powerful technique of imagining the Torah being taken away from you, only to be returned. We hear stories of people in concentration camps who traded their meager food rations for a single page of Gemara. Imagine how thankful you would be to someone who gave it back to you after you'd lost it. The author emphasizes that we are not talking about a person who gave us back the Torah, but God Himself—the Creator, who not only gave us the Torah but also arouses us to it and helps us understand it. Every day, when we sit down to learn, we don't realize that we say, " He gives the Torah " ( נותן התורה ), as God is continuously giving and teaching us the Torah. This concept is highlighted in a story about Rav Chaim Kanievsky. A convert on his way to conversion expressed second thoughts, telling Rav Chaim that he couldn't grasp the Gemara. He felt that since learning was so fundamental to Judaism, perhaps he wasn't fit to convert. Rav Chaim responded, "It's not your fault, you don't have a good teacher." When the convert protested that he had the best rabbi, Rav Chaim clarified, "A Jewish person has God as a teacher, He gives the Torah . When you convert, you will get that Teacher as well." The least we can do to show our appreciation for this great gift is to cling to the Torah and use it. A person who receives a gift shows appreciation by using it. Similarly, we must learn the Torah and keep its mitzvot (commandments). King David said in a verse, "I hurried and did not delay" ( חשתי ולא התמהמהתי ) in my love for Your Torah. "How sweet Your words are to my palate" ( מה נמלצו לחכי ). This is a fundamental point: we must appreciate the incredible gift God has given us in the Torah. This is why we are commanded to make a blessing every morning over the Torah, acknowledging that "He chose us from all the nations and gave us His Torah" ( שבחר בנו מכל העמים ונתן לנו את תורתו ). We ask that it be "sweet in our mouths" ( והערב נא ). We know the Beit HaMikdash (Holy Temple) was destroyed because the people did not make a blessing on learning the Torah, showing they did not appreciate this great gift. This, then, is the fourth gift we must account for: the Torah.

Let's get honest—every one of us has believed lies about ourselves. “I'm not good enough.” “I'll never change.” “God is disappointed in me.” These thoughts don't come from Heaven. They're planted by an enemy who knows that if you ever truly believed who you are in Christ, he wouldn't stand a chance. So today, we reject those lies—loudly. Our springboard for today's discussion is:“Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind...” — Romans 12:2 (ESV)This world is full of voices competing to define you. The media tells you what you should look like. Social platforms tell you how successful you should be. The past tells you what you'll never become. But God? God speaks truth over your life—and the only way to hear Him clearly is to renew your mind. That means identifying every lie and refusing to agree with it.Here are some common lies we need to evict:* Lie: “I'm too broken.”Truth: You are made whole in Christ.* Lie: “I've failed too many times.”Truth: His mercies are new every morning.* Lie: “God can't use someone like me.”Truth: God chooses the weak to shame the strong.Lies gain power when we agree with them. Truth breaks chains when we declare it.So how do we reject lies? We replace them. Not with motivational quotes—but with Scripture. God's Word is our ultimate filter. If it doesn't align with what He says, it gets thrown out—no exceptions.Question of the Day:What lie have you believed about yourself—and what truth from God's Word will you use to replace it?Mini Call to Action:Write down one lie you've believed. Cross it out. Then write a verse from Scripture that speaks the truth. Say that truth out loud today.Let's Pray:Jesus, I repent for agreeing with lies about who I am. New Hope Daily SOAP - Daily Devotional Bible Reading

Daily Dose of Hope May 20, 2025 Day 2 of Week 8   Scripture – Matthew 2   Prayer:  Dear God, You are amazing!  How awesome it is that you who created all things are also so intimately involved in our lives.  We give you glory and praise for who you are.  We are so thankful for your love.  We want to know you more.  We want and need to hear your voice.  Help us set aside our scattered thoughts and focus on you.  In these next few moments of silence, Lord, hear our prayers...  In Your Name, Amen. Welcome back, friends, to the Daily Dose of Hope, a devotional and podcast connected to the Bible reading plan at New Hope Church in Brandon, FL.  Today, we are digging into Matthew 2.  This is pretty familiar Scripture to many of us.  Let's try to see it with fresh eyes. The text begins with foreign Magi visiting King Herod.  These men are an interesting and mysterious group. We don't really know much about the magi who come seeking Jesus from eastern lands.  Some translations call them wise men or kings.  Matthew doesn't include a lot of details.  We have no idea how many there actually were (despite the popular carol, Scripture does not say there were just three of them).  Like the shepherds, the magi seem an unlikely group to seek out and worship Jesus. They were pagans, gentiles, involved in the occult, and yet they knew there was something more.  They were searching for something more.  So these magi embark on a long journey, carrying expensive gifts worthy of a king, eager to pay homage. Their efforts lead them to an encounter far beyond their expectations. Unlike an earthly king who would have been found in a palace, the magi are led to what we can probably assume is a modest home of a Jewish family and it's there that they find Jesus with his mother and Scripture says they bow down and worship him.  Maybe it wasn't what they expected but they see God's hand in it nonetheless and worship the one they know to be the Messiah, the savior of the world.  They were outsiders but they recognized the Messiah when so many insiders failed to do so. Up until now, it all sounds great, right?  But there is another character in this story.  His name is Herod the Great. The Herod family ruled over the holy land both before and after the time of Christ, they were somewhat like puppet kings, put in place by the Romans to keep order.  And they don't have a great reputation at all.  They were, for the most part, insecure and power-hungry. One reason I don't think it's accurate to refer to the magi as wise men is because they did one thing that was really unwise.  They go straight to King Herod, “So where is the NEW king? Where is the one who has been named king of the Jews?”  Keep in mind, Herod the Great considered himself to be king of the Jews.  The man is insecure and vicious so he tries to trick the magi into divulging Jesus' location.  But no amount of earthly power can get Herod what he wants.  The magi are warned in a dream to not return to Herod.  And this angers him more.  Herod was both feared and hated. The Jewish historian Josephus painted a picture of Herod as a suspicious and cruel client king, with a history of killing anyone whom he saw as a threat, including three sons and his wife. So even though the magi remind Herod of Micah's prophecy that the Messiah was to be born in Bethlehem (Micah 5:2), his response was not to pay homage but to destroy the newborn king.  In Matthew 2:16, we read that Herod decides to take matters into his own hands and kill all the baby boys who might be in the age range of Jesus, When Herod realized that he had been outwitted by the Magi, he was furious, and he gave orders to kill all the boys in Bethlehem and its vicinity who were two years old and under, in accordance with the time he had learned from the Magi.  Truly dark and horrific.  The extent to which human beings will go to gain power surely demonstrates the brokenness of our world.  Then and now.  But through all of this, Jesus is saved.  The baby's family is warned in a dream and they head down to Egypt for a period of time to keep the boy safe from Herod before they come back to Israel and settle in Nazareth.  Because God's purposes will prevail.  God had promised long, long ago to send a Savior for his people and there is nothing that could get in the way.  Listen to this prophecy from in Isaiah 9:6-7, spoken 700 years before the birth of Jesus, For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the greatness of his government and peace there will be no end.  He will reign on David's throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever. The zeal of the Lord Almighty will accomplish this.  It's like God was saying “I'm going to send someone who will restore the people of Israel to me.  This person will be a light to the Gentiles, and will bring my salvation to the ends of the earth AND it will be obvious once more that your God reigns.”  No power-hungry king could mess that up as hard as he tried.  No earthly power could thwart God's plan of redemption for his people.  It's true that bad things to happen.  God allows human beings free will and that is too often used for evil.  But that doesn't mean God isn't involved, it doesn't mean he isn't invested, God can and has orchestrated, changed, and/or stopped the plans of all kinds of people to get done what needs to get done.  God has been working, in his time, over the course of thousands of years, to achieve his bigger purpose. And what was the bigger purpose?  God's mission from the beginning was to redeem his world.  He did this through Jesus.  That little baby that the wise men knelt down and worshiped, that child that Herod felt so threatened by --- that child would grow to become the Savior of the world.  He would bring sight to the blind, freedom for the oppressed, he would proclaim good news to the poor.  He would preach the Kingdom of God and show the world a different way of living, ultimately giving up his own life voluntarily on a Roman cross.  In doing so, he became the final sacrifice for sin, providing a way for you and me and all people to be redeemed.  Because of Jesus' sacrifice, our sins can be forgiven and we can walk hand in hand with a holy God.  Because of Jesus, nothing separates us from God.  And then, three days after he died, he was resurrected, defeating evil and death and demonstrating to the world who HE is.  He is, after all, God.  Jesus is the Lord. Jesus is LORD of all.  Paul writes this in Colossians 1:15-20, The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. 16 For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him. 17 He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. 18 And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy. 19 For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him, 20 and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross.  Jesus is above all things.  Jesus is Lord. And over the course of 2000 years, rulers and kings and dictators and autocrats have tried to wipe out his influence.  They have misused his teachings, they have twisted the Gospel.  Like Herod, they have done all kinds of things to either try to eliminate the influence of Jesus or to use the Gospel for their own deceitful purposes.  And at times, it's been ugly and violent and really sad.  But this is TRUTH:  God will ensure that his purposes prevail.  Yes, in our sinful and broken world, all kinds of horrors will occur.  Vladimir Putin will think he's invincible.  Kim Jong Un will declare himself supreme ruler.  American politicians will think themselves unshakable.  You and I will experience heartbreak, loss, and illness.  And yet, Jesus is still Lord of all.  God is still working in our lives, God is still present with us in the middle of the mess, and Jesus is still in the business of transforming lives.  Friends, Jesus is on the throne, King of Kings and Lord of Lords.  The rulers of the world may oppose him but they are ultimately answerable to him.  Because he will come again. I'll stop there for now.  But I do have to ask this question:  Is Jesus Lord of your life?  More tomorrow. Blessings, Pastor Vicki

The Struggle of Unopened DoorsWe often knock on doors that refuse to open.We push, strive, and insist we know where we need to be.But when opportunities slip away, prayers seem unanswered, or life takes unexpected turns, frustration creeps in. Doubt whispers, "Is God even listening?"Truth: God is not ignoring you. He is protecting you.Why God Says "Wait" or "No"Imagine a baby reaching for a flame or a sharp knife. A loving parent intervenes—even as the child protests, unaware of the danger avoided. So it is with God.We think we know what's best, but He sees what we cannot:Which doors lead to blessings.Which paths end in destruction. If a door remains closed, there is a reason. The Purpose of Divine DelaysProtectionWhat we think we want could harm us.PreparationGod's "not yet" means "You're not ready yet."Something GreaterHis plans exceed our limited vision (Isaiah 55:9).Example:Recall a time when life veered "off course"—only to later reveal a better path you'd never have chosen.Discerning God's DoorsNot every open door is from Him. Some are:Tests of faith.Traps disguised as opportunities.Lessons in patience.God's doors come with:✔ Peace, not confusion.✔ Alignment with His Word, not compromise.✔ Growth, not destruction.Ask before stepping forward:"Lord, is this from You?" —Then wait for His answer. The Power of WaitingWe idolize speed, but God operates beyond time. His delays are not denials.Waiting is preparation.Use the pause to:Grow closer to Him.Strengthen your faith.Avoid battles you're not meant to fight.Promise:When God opens the right door, no one can shut it (Revelation 3:8).A Call to TrustWill you surrender your timeline, your will, your expectations? His timing is perfect. His plans are good. His love is certain."Be still, and know that I am God." In the biblical story of humanity's beginning, there's a curious and often overlooked detail. When God speaks to Adam in the garden, He doesn't begin by issuing a command. Instead, He gives a warning: “But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die” (Genesis 2:17). At first glance, this seems like a straightforward prohibition. But in Jewish tradition, the interpretation leans another way: God isn't laying down the law. He's offering a word of caution. Deacon Harold talks more about God's invitation to freedom. Also looking into Soulful Psalm 135:7-12

We are disciples. What is a disciple? Matthew 4:19 definition: Come Follow me (belong to the body of Christ)... and I will make you (become more like Jesus)... fishers of men (join Jesus in ministry reproducing and multiplying disciples).Best practices for growing as a disciple. * Intimate relationships: deep trust is the soil for life change. * Accountability: speak the truth in love to one another. * Biblical truth: the Bible gives the vision of the life of a disciple. * Spiritual disciplines: practice the habits that lead to intimacy with Jesus and service to others. * Multiplication: empower those who are discipled to disciple others. * Spiritual gifts: serve according to gifts and passions. Four Chair Discipleship Pathway: This pathway builds on the truth that living things grow and leans into the Biblical vision of organic (a seed or a tree), not mechanical growth (an assembly line). Growth is a slow and steady process requiring nurture, cultivation, and patience. The soil of growth is life-on-life relationships in real-life situations, in real-time, with real people. The four chairs of this pathway include: * Chair 1: Come and See (John 1:39) - Seekers * Chair 2: Follow and Grow (John 1:43) - Believers * Chair 3: Abide and Serve (John 15:5) - Workers * Chair 4: Go and Bear Fruit (John 15:16) - ReproducersWhere are you on this pathway?

THE TRUTH ABOUT TITHING: TIPS OR TITHE GENESIS 4:1-7 Why did God reject Cain's offering and accept Abel's? It was a matter of the heart! Cain tipped God; Abel obeyed God. Do we have the heart of Cain or Abel? When it comes to our finances, who are we going to thank and who are we going to trust? What we do with our finances reveals the condition of our heart. Truth: God doesn't need our money; He wants our heart! Tithing is not about getting something out of us, it is about doing something for us! The account of Cain and Abel teaches us: 1. Tithing reveals the condition of the heart. An unholy hold on money divides every aspect of our lives. Blessed money unifies. 2. Tithing determines how much God can trust me. 3. Tithing determines how long my giving lives. Hebrews 11:4 My faith in God speaks longer than I live on earth. Everything we work to accumulate (possessions) dies with us. Is it really worth it to follow God when the wicked seem to win? In this powerful and hope-filled conclusion to the book of Malachi, we see that God is not blind to injustice nor forgetful of faithfulness. He promises that the Day of the Lord is coming—a day when the arrogant will face judgment, and the faithful will leap like calves set free. The same God who calls His people to remember and return also provides the mercy we so desperately need in Jesus Christ. This sermon unpacks the final words of the Old Testament, showing us how the story points forward to Christ, the true Sun of Righteousness, who brings healing in His wings.

While living with my parents, sometime in early teens, we attended one of the oldest churches in the south. We'd dress in our Sunday finest, traverse the winding country roads, and find “our pew.” After a few stares from my parents, a pinch or two under the thigh, and some monotone words from the pulpit, we were free. The church would empty and we'd head to the car, ready to ditch the Sunday best and get on with life. Every Sunday, no matter what…my dad would strike up a conversation while the three of us sat in the car…waiting! We would glare, roll the window down and motion, one time a horn was used in efforts to get things moving. Waiting was for the birds! We always asked, what is the hold up!?!? This weekend, we explore the same question about God's seeming delay in His return! If you're keen, read ahead in 2 Peter 3. Pastor Matthew McCarter

Welcome to today's sermon podcast. We explore the profound mystery of the gospel and its power to offer peace amidst turmoil. This episode highlights a historic moment from World War I, where a simple song, 'Silent Night,' brought temporary peace to the battlefield, reflecting the potential for harmony even in the darkest times. We also journey through the biblical story of Mary, a young woman chosen to carry the Messiah, and her profound song of praise recorded in the book of Luke. Witness Mary's faith and humility as she navigates the unexpected plans God laid out for her, finding peace and purpose in God's promise. This episode encourages us to trust in God's greatness, grasp the power of His mercy, and embrace His plan with humility and faith, finding peace in our own unexpected paths. Join us in discovering how God's plan, though sometimes unforeseen, always leads to a deeper understanding of His love and mercy, providing peace that transcends all understanding. 1 THESSALONIANS 5:16 PSALM 48:12 PSALM 22:3 What is the difference between thankfulness and gratitude? Thankfulness is a response to a ________________________________. Gratitude is a _________________________, a state of grace. Most of us have a story or stories of God's faithfulness that brought gratitude. Truth: God is attracted to grateful people. What do we know about gratitude? 1. Gratitude is never invisible or silent. Luke 6:45 When we are grateful, we will say it and show it. 2. Gratitude sustains joy and blessing. Psalm 9:1 The secret to joy is learning to remember all that God has done for you, especially in the bad times. 3. Gratitude begins when entitlement ends. 1 Corinthians 15:5 It is impossible to be grateful for something we think we are entitled to. Without God, what are we entitled to? God's mercy keeps us until God's grace finds us! 4. Grateful people can find a blessing or enlarge a blessing. Psalm 126:5-6 You have everything you need to do everything God has asked you to do. Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life. It turns what we have into enough, and more. It turns denial into acceptance, chaos to order, confusion to clarity. It can turn a meal into a feast, a house into a home, a stranger into a friend. +++++++ You can find our service times on our website: https://www.anctally.com/ You can find sermon highlights on Twitter here: https://x.com/allnationstally

The spies confirmed the land's abundance but focused on its challenges, including fortified cities and giants. Introduction Big Question: Have you ever felt like God's promises for your life are too big to believe? The Struggle: Doubt and negativity can cloud our vision, especially in seasons of waiting. Just like the Israelites, we sometimes let fear overshadow God's Word. Key Takeaways 1. The Promise of God What God Said: The land is yours; go and possess it (Numbers 13:1-2). The Problem: The spies focused on the obstacles—the people, the fortified cities, and the giants. Reflection: Strongholds from your past (like Israel's slavery) can trap your mind, making God's promises feel unattainable. Are you still holding onto fear or doubt that's keeping you from stepping into His plan? 2. Breaking Through Walls The Israelites' Perspective: The walls of the cities seemed like impossible barriers. Spiritual Insight: Walls can block God's movement in your life—whether it's fear, unforgiveness, or insecurity. Think About This: What walls are holding you back today? God wants to break through, but you need to invite Him in. 3. Facing the Giants The Challenge: Giants in the land made the Israelites feel small and insignificant. The Truth: God had already given them the victory—they just needed to step forward in faith. Encouragement: Giants can appear as health challenges, financial struggles, or relational issues, but they don't define your future. Let your faith lead the way. Faith Boosters for Your Journey Caleb's boldness: “We are well able to overcome!” Nehemiah's resilience: Building and fighting through adversity. Jacob's persistence: “I won't let go until You bless me.” The three Hebrew boys' courage: Trusting God even in the fire. Final WordGod's promises don't rely on your strength—they're built on His faithfulness. If He said it, He will do it. Don't stop believing. Hold onto faith, tear down your walls, face your giants, and keep your eyes on the prize.

Closer, Pt. 4 | August 25, 2024Pastor Wes Morris John 1:1-14 (NIV) In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.There was a man sent from God whose name was John. He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all might believe. He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light. The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world. He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God...The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth. ✓ Truth: God's standard.John 17:17 (TLB) Make them pure and holy through teaching them your words of truth.✓ Grace: God's favor.✓ Without truth, we become worldly.    Without grace, we become judgmental. ✓ Truth without grace is mean.   Grace without truth is meaningless. ✓ Grace invites us to be free so the truth can set us free. Ephesians 2:8 (NIV) For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God... THE BALANCE OF GRACE AND TRUTH John 8:9-11 (NIV) At this, those who heard began to go away one at a time, the older ones first, until only Jesus was left, with the woman still standing there. Jesus straightened up and asked her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?”“No one, sir,” she said. “Then neither do I condemn you,” Jesus declared. “Go now and leave your life of sin.”I. WALK IN HUMILITY.John 8:6 (TLB) They were trying to trap him into saying something they could use against him, but Jesus stooped down and wrote in the dust with his finger.Philippians 2:3 (ESV) Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves.II. SPEAK THE TRUTH IN LOVE.Ephesians 4:15 (TLB) We will lovingly follow the truth at all times—speaking truly, dealing truly, living truly—and so become more and more in every way like Christ who is the Head of his body, the Church.

Jesus said to his disciples: “I am the true vine, and my Father is the vine grower. He takes away every branch in me that does not bear fruit, and every one that does he prunes so that it bears more fruit. You are already pruned because of the word that I spoke to you.” John 15:1–3Pruning a vine is an important part of helping it to grow and produce not only more fruit but the best fruit. If left unpruned, a grape vine will eventually produce less fruit and poorer quality fruit. Good pruning helps to direct the nourishment of the vine to the new buds that are most fruitful.Jesus' teaching above uses the imagery of pruning a vine to help us understand that faith must lead to charity. First, Jesus says that He is the “true vine.” He is the only source of the nourishment we need for the new life of grace. He is the only way to Heaven and salvation. Knowing our Lord and being attached to Him firmly is faith. Second, our Lord says that He takes away every branch that does not bear fruit. This indicates that faith without the good fruit of charity is dead and is like a branch on a vine that produces nothing. Third, when Jesus finds a branch that bears good fruit, he doesn't leave it alone. Instead, He prunes it with loving attention so that “it bears more fruit.”To apply these teachings to your own life, begin by looking at your faith as if it were a branch firmly attached to a vine. Do you believe all that God has spoken through His holy Word? It is useful to regularly examine your conscience in regard to your faith. Since faith is the first step in the spiritual life, it must remain firmly grounded in the Truth God has revealed. This means we must regularly study the Word of God as it is revealed through the Scriptures and the catechetical teachings of the Church, and assent to those teachings with all our mind.Next, after affirming your faith in all that God has spoken through the Scriptures and the Church, try to examine your charity. Do you see concrete acts of love in your life that result from your faith? In other words, we can “love” many things in a purely emotional sort of way. But charity is based on faith, not on how we feel. Charity is the fruit of faith. What acts of charity can you point to in your life? What have you sensed God calling you to do in a selfless and sacrificial way? Have you done it?Finally, when you discover the ways that charity is alive within you, know that God will focus His pruning there. Pruning can be painful. It will require sacrifice, patience in the face of trial, overcoming selfishness, and doing things you don't feel like doing. In fact, sometimes God even makes charitable acts seem unpleasant as a way of pruning your motivations and making them more pure, based more on faith than on emotion. But this is good.Reflect, today, upon this holy imagery from Jesus. It's a lesson from nature that reveals the supernatural life of grace at work. Don't be deterred by the pruning God wants to do. Embrace suffering with love, respond to injustice with forgiveness, offer mercy when you don't feel like it, and seek to serve selflessly those who seem undeserving. Doing so will prune you so that God will be able to build up His Kingdom in glorious ways through you.Jesus, most glorious Vine, You and You alone are the source of all nourishment in life. From You all good things come. Help me to have a firm faith in You and all that You have revealed, so that this faith will bud forth and bring about an abundance of good fruit for the glorious building up of Your Kingdom.
