Complete Repentance: Beyond Regret

Capital City Christian Church | Podcast

"I think repentance also involves agreeing with God regarding his mercy, his forgiveness, his grace. It involves a leaning in, instead of a leaning away. Listen: when you ask God for forgiveness, do you trust him to forgive you? Do you really? Or, every time you have one of those “flinch moments” do you beg his forgiveness all over again? I think a whole lot of us don't really trust God. We don't really trust his forgiveness, his grace. … Do you? Do you ever wonder whether your sins are too big, or maybe you have committed the same daggon sin so many times … that you have out-sinned grace, maybe? And … did you know that to reject God's forgive3ness is, in a sense, to cling to your sin in a different way? Not by loving it, because you don't, I hope. But by believing that your sin is more powerful than God's grace. Did you know that refusing God's forgiveness is a form of unbelief, often rooted in pride, or despair? I think, for a lot of us Jesus followers, we get the first part of repentance … agreeing with God by owning our sin, accepting our guilt, experiencing perhaps regret and remorse. In fact, for many Jesus follower that kind of defines their life with God. But, I think, maybe, a whole lot of Jesus followers resist that second part of repentance: agreeing with God by accepting … actually accepting his forgiveness, his grace." What do worship, structure, and doctrine look like in the Global Methodist Church? Pastor Jeff Cranston sit down with Dr. Scott Pattison to unpack what makes this growing denomination unique. From diverse worship styles to strong theological alignment and global expansion, this episode gives you a front-row seat to what's happening inside the Global Methodist movement—and why so many churches are joining. Here's What We Discussed:00:17 – What a Global Methodist Worship Service Looks LikeExpect variety: from high liturgy with robes and incense to modern worship and house churches. While styles differ, the theology remains consistent and biblically grounded.05:20 – Communion in the Global Methodist ChurchCommunion is open to all believers, with grape juice and bread as symbols of Christ's body and blood. Churches may serve it weekly, monthly, or quarterly—local leadership decides.07:32 – Understanding Baptism: Symbolism Over FormGlobal Methodists baptize infants and adults, using sprinkling, pouring, or immersion. What matters most is the individual's profession of faith and the church's support of their spiritual journey.10:16 – Church Structure and LeadershipThe denomination has bishops, conference superintendents, and presiding elders. Local churches are seen not as landing sites but as launching pads for gospel mission.13:00 – Global Growth and VisionWith nearly 5,000 churches worldwide and growing, the Global Methodist Church is expanding across Africa, the Philippines, Europe, and beyond. The goal? Make disciples of Jesus and spread scriptural holiness across the globe.Key Quote:"The Global Methodist Church exists to make disciples of Jesus Christ, to spread scriptural holiness across the globe, and make a difference for the sake of Christ." – Dr. Scott PattisonWe love your feedback! In a throw-away age like the one in which we live, virtually everything is vulnerable. In fact, we can become so accustomed to this way of thinking that it becomes an ingrained mindset, one in which we come to believe that anything perceived as not being expediently useful is potentially disposable. But how far are we willing to go with this? Indeed, aren't there inherent dangers that we might take this notion a little too far, perhaps even to a point of no return? Find out more in a review of the insightful and hilarious new sci-fi satire, "Mickey 17," on the next edition of The Cinema Scribe.

"Bottom line, guys, Mary is confused because she doesn't know the real Jesus. She is looking for the wrong Jesus … a Jesus of her own imagination … her kind of Jesus. She is blind to the real Jesus. And the real Jesus has to come after her, to break through her fog. You see, if Jesus had just sat back and waited for her to get it … You know, some of us are like, “You keep searching and eventually you will find,” right? “If you work at it hard enough, if you work at it long enough, you'll find the truth … your truth.” If Jesus had just stood there thinking, “I'll just wait here till she figures it out, till she discovers who I really am” … I don't think Mary would have ever found him. Because that's not how it works. Salvation is not about our finding him, it's about him finding us. God always loves us … first. God always nudges us, and draws us … first. God always calls us … first. And he always calls us, every one of us … first. Because God is prodigal with his grace. You've felt them, God's nudges. The real question is, how do you respond? So Jesus says to Mary, so gently, “Why are you crying?” Guys, he knew! Grief? Disappointment … they killed him! Were her tears because she felt broken? Was her hope gone, her direction gone, her purpose for living gone? Were they tears of unfaith, disbelief … stupidity?" Stephen "Doc" Pattison, Lead Minister

An episode from The Holistic Navigator. This is not to diagnosis or treat any disease/illness. Consult your physician before taking supplements or medications OR before you stop taking medications. This is for entertainment/informational purposes only! This is a difficult question to answer. So much of it depends on the individual's needs and our health is far too complex to be remedied or maintained with a single nutrient. We usually point people to our CORE 4 Supplements (multivitamin, omega-3, probiotic, greens powder), but if you're looking for one supplement that has widespread benefits that nearly everyone can benefit from, it's hard not to throw berberine in the mix as well. Berberine is a compound that can be extracted from many plants, including those of the Berberis genus. It's an alkaloid compound, which is a naturally occurring nitrogen compound that's most commonly found in the plant kingdom. It should also be noted that berberine has a history extending back to ancient medicine, but modern studies have confirmed again and again how effective this compound is in restoring optimal health. Meet Carrie: Carrie is a national educator for Natural Factors and licensed herbalist and is excited to share with you how berberine and another nutrient called PEA can benefit your life. Berberine is widely recognized for it's ability to optimize blood sugar levels, even to the extent of competing with current pharmaceuticals, but it's other extensive benefits make it one supplement that should be a part of everyone's supplement regimen. Takeaways: Berberine does just as good a job as metformin and has less price to it and has far less risk and side effects as far as blood sugar. (8:00) Insulin resistance can be devastating our health. (12:00) Your body creates PEA on its own, so supplementing will further enhance its benefits, specifically on the endocannabinoid system. (23:02) PEA can be an incredibly powerful tool for those that have neuropathy. (25:58)

"We are calling this little series, “First comes love, then comes …” And it's all about the kind of love we're talking about. If we're talking about agape, first comes love, then comes … sacrifice. First comes agape, then comes … gentleness. Of course, it does! First comes agape, then comes … humility. First comes agape, then comes faithfulness. And if you're talking about an agape kind of love … no kidding. Eros? No way. Agape? A God kind of love? Absolutely! The fact is, you can do sacrifice without agape. You can do gentleness, humility, and faithfulness without agape … at least for a while. But if you are practicing an agape kind of love, you cannot not sacrifice and serve. You can not be gentle and humble with your partner. You can not be faithful to your partner … till death do you part. I'll show you." Stephen "Doc" Pattison, Lead Minister

"So, there are all these different “Bibles” out there, and all these spiritual gurus, motivational “life coaches,” all telling you how to live. And you pile on top of these the advice you are getting every day from TV and the internet, from TV stars and athletes who think that because they are talented and rich, you need to listen to them as they tell you what to think and how to live; and politicians who think they can tell you what to think and how to live. And all of you are probably deluged with advice from your moms and dads, and your brothers and sisters, and your friends as they tell you what to think and how to live. And, every once in a while, they give you some good advice. But, as Jesus' followers, we believe that if their advice contradicts what the Bible tells us … the Bible wins every single time. Right? And to so many, that sounds narrow, quaint, and stupidly arrogant. And … if the Bible was one of many options, they'd be right. But we think the Bible is … infinitely superior because we think the Bible is … fundamentally different. It's unique, one of a kind. I'll show you. We don't treat our physical Bibles with the same kind of reverence as some of theirs. We are not “bibliolaters.” We don't worship the book – it's just paper and ink. We do worship the God who speaks to us through it. We'll get back to that. But … I want to try to explain this morning why we think our Bible is so special, which will explain why we want you to read it, study it, memorize it, meditate on it, and pray it; so, here goes…" Stephen "Doc" Pattison, Lead Minister

(No kidding!) Command them to do good, to be rich in good works, to be generous and ready to share with others. In this way, they will store up for themselves a treasure that will be a solid foundation for the future. And then they will be able to win the life which is true life.” (1 Timothy 6.17-19) … Guys, God isn't against money. God isn't against rich. Arthur's story starts simple: a family farm, a small-town upbringing, and a job managing dealerships where loyalty wasn't handed out, it was earned. As the dealerships grew, so did Arthur, taking on bigger roles until he eventually became President of Pattison Agriculture, responsible for 17 John Deere dealerships across Saskatchewan and Manitoba. It was more than just tractors—it was about building relationships, managing people, and proving you could hit your numbers no matter the season. Along the way, Arthur learned that customer satisfaction wasn't just a strategy—it was survival. And survival's a skill you don't forget. But it didn't stop there. The Jim Pattison Group, a corporate giant with over 48,000 employees across 25 industries, saw something in him. Arthur became one of Pattison's Vice Presidents, sitting at the same table as one of Canada's most iconic businessmen. Jim Pattison's leadership was simple and sharp: “Spend money like it's your own,” and “Don't do anything you wouldn't want on the front page of the newspaper.” It was the kind of no-frills wisdom that fit Arthur like a glove. In this episode, Arthur reflects on: The lessons learned from farming and how they carried over into running dealerships and corporate boardrooms. The challenges of balancing old-school agriculture with new business realities, including scaling operations while holding onto small-town values. What he took away from working with one of Canada's sharpest business minds—and why the hardest part wasn't making it to the top, but staying there. Now, Arthur's back on prairie soil, working with Aberhart Group to build something real—businesses that serve their people, their customers, and the land. He's traded in the skyscrapers for Saskatchewan sunsets, but the fight's still the same: do right by people, take care of the customer, and build something that lasts. Tune in for a conversation that's as much about grit as it is about growth. Arthur's journey is proof that whether you're on a tractor or in a boardroom, it all comes down to knowing the value of hard work and the power of doing things the right way. 0:00 Introduction and Core Values00:33 Welcome to the Growing the Future Podcast00:48 Introducing Today's Esteemed Guest01:15 Family of Companies Overview02:09 Arthur Ward's Early Life and Career Beginnings04:48 Transition to Agricultural Sales07:36 Challenges and Successes in the Ag Industry11:14 Leadership and Coaching Philosophy18:00 Joining the Jim Pattison Group18:51 Innovations and Future Plans41:52 Adapting to Market Changes43:19 Lessons from Farming45:25 Unexpected Life Changes48:33 Joining the Aberhart Group53:45 The Role of Chief Integration Officer56:51 Future Goals and Reflections57:36 Rapid Fire Business Insights01:02:29 Building Sustainable Businesses01:14:02 Personal Reflections and Future Plans Aberhart Family of Companies:https://aberhartgroup.comhttps://aberhartagsolutions.cahttps://aberhartfarms.comhttps://www.convergencegrowth.comConnect with us on AGvisorPro: https://link-app.agvisorpro.com/aberhart-danIf you want to be part of the Growing the Future community, make sure to say hi on social at: https://linktr.ee/Growingthefuturepodcast

Sid lives in The Cascades in Washington State and he is currently building a house in the middle of nowhere and thoroughly enjoying the process. Sid and Kenton met at Everest Basecamp in 2018 when they were both guiding there. Sid has summited Everest three times, from both the South Side and the North Side, and they share stories about their experiences in this week's episode of Cool Conversations. Sid spends a lot of his time heli-ski guiding and has built up a base of loyal clients who return to ski with him year after year. He talks about the importance of building their trust and also understanding skill levels of the group to keep everyone safe on the mountain. Kenton describes him as a renegade or a non-conformist, which he agrees with, but not at the expense of safety. This is a Cool Conversation between two friends that touches on many different subjects, so be prepared for the conversation to go anywhere!

"Do you know why Jesus washed our feet? Do you know why he died for us? He thinks we're special. He really does. For some crazy reason, your Creator God thinks you are special. And if someone is that special to you, you'll figure out a way to serve them, right? If you love someone as much as you love yourself, you'll figure out a way to serve them, right? Do you remember the two great commandments? Love God with all your heart, and love your one anothers as much as you love yourself. A loving husband will serve his wife. A loving wife will serve her husband. A loving parent will serve his kids. A loving neighbor will serve his or her neighbor, right? You get it. God tells us to serve our one anothers, because he calls us to love our one anothers, as much as, or more than, we love ourselves … kind of like he does." Stephen "Doc" Pattison

"Now, not everyone who is depressed will feel all of these descriptors; but they probably feel some of them. You feel down. You're irritable, maybe. Maybe a sense of hopelessness. You've lost a sense of purpose. Those things you used to enjoy, you don't enjoy them anymore. There's this oppressive pessimism – everything is half-empty. Sadness, dejection. Some people eat when they are depressed. Some don't eat. Some people sleep when they are depressed. Some can't sleep. You may feel constantly tired and listless. You may have a hard time thinking clearly, concentrating, and processing. You may have this self-loathing, maybe feeling like a failure. You may even … you may even have thought about ending it all. Does any of that stuff ring a bell with any of you? And if this stuff settles in, if it stays too long, after a couple weeks, they might label it as a clinical depression. Ever been there and felt that?" Stephen "Doc" Pattison

She highlights the need for children to have a safe environment where they can thrive, play, and interact with others. War Child focuses on providing evidence-based interventions to help children recover from trauma, such as art therapy, sports interventions, and music. We talk about the power of music in making people feel better and reconnecting them to their ancestral stories. She also discusses the challenges of ensuring psychological safety for both staff members in the UK and local staff on the ground in conflict zones.   You can donate to War Child here: www.warchild.org.uk Here is the story of the walks that began with Claire and Helen and a handful of others.   Check out Claire's latest walking movement - Coaches Walking   If you like this episode, subscribe or follow The Coaching Inn on your podcast platform to hear new episodes as they drop.   Coming Up:  Saturday:  Open Table: Coaching and Higher Education   Key Words psychological safety, children, war zones, trauma, evidence-based interventions, art therapy, sports interventions, music, ancestral stories, staff safety

"How many of you have been wounded? Not physically, but emotionally? … Yeah, that's a universal, right? Emotional pain, spiritual pain, relational pain? Anger, sadness, bitterness, despair, remorse maybe; you are wounded, you hurt. It's pretty much universal. How many of you are hurting somehow right here, right now? A bunch of you, probably. Because hurt happens. Hurting is universal. Healing … not so much." Stephen "Doc" Pattison

"Jesus—The I AM—is the true vine, he says, and we are kind of like branches created to be connected to the vine. And God is kind of like the gardener. And, like a gardener … Well, have you ever pruned bushes or trees? What do you do if a branch is dead? You know, it's flat-out dry, brittle, and dead. You cut it off, right? Throw it away; burn it up, maybe...how about what you think or what you fear. Would you honestly expect the Gardener to prune you or to cut you off? I'm not asking what you deserve. None of us deserve grace. That's why it's called grace. None of us deserve to be saved, redeemed, rebirthed, forgiven, acquitted, sanctified, made righteous, made new. It's not about what we deserve. Do you think your life gives evidence that you are attached to the vine, that you are drawing life from the vine, that you are being transformed by the vine, that the Gardener would choose to prune you, rather than cut off? In another place, Jesus says, “By their fruit you will recognize them.” (Matthew 7.16) By your fruit, do you see evidence that you are “in Christ”?" Stephen "Doc" Pattison

This particular machine had safety mechanisms in place that should have prevented an accident like this, but as much as they tried, they couldn't find any evidence to prove what happened. As we enter a new year together, what does it look like to watch for the star? To look for those signs of God's arrival in our lives and in our world? Epiphany season points to discovery, illumination, a new realization. We are still in a time of long nights and short days, and the concept of spiritual “dark” and “light” may hold more than first meets the eye. In Barbara Brown Taylor's “Learning to Walk in the Dark,” she lifts up some of the unique gifts that only the darkness can bring. But here in Isaiah, the prophet speaks to a new dawn with brightness, rising, and radiance—people gathering together from near and far. This passage of Hebrew Scripture has been used by Christians to point toward Matthew 2:1-12, and the coming of the Magi to the newborn Messiah—even connecting the details of gold and frankincense. Tying into Matthew's Gospel, what does this story teach us afresh about the gifts we bring? The unexpected ways wisdom shows up? The scope of this good news that extends widely into nations and peoples beyond our own? As we celebrate this coming anniversary of God's mission through Village Church, what are some unique gifts of this congregation? How has Village been a light through many a troubled time, and into the future? How are we invited even now to “rise and shine” in this new day? Our scripture reading is Isaiah 60:1-6.Rev. Cari Pattison, daughter of Marilyn and Dave and sister of George and Joe Pattison, is grateful to be a child of Village Church. She was baptized and confirmed at Village. Both her maternal and paternal grandparents were charter members. With fond memories of Village Church Advent workshops, VBS, day camp, youth group trips, listening to Dr. Bob's sermons, teaching Sunday school and serving on youth ministry staff, Cari traces her call to ministry most centrally to this congregation and God's gift of faith formation here. Ordained in the Presbyterian Church (USA) in 2007, she currently serves as pastor of the Woodstock Reformed Church in Woodstock, New York, where the Hudson Valley meets the Catskills. She loves walking her dog Ollie, teaching yoga at the studio down the street and hiking with friends—especially the Appalachian Trail!
