Ep 120 Isabel Rosario - The One Percent: A Human Race Breast Cancer Awareness Girl Scout Gold Award

Full transcription available at http://heartsofgoldpodcast.com/ Isabel shares her Girl Scout Gold Award project focused on raising awareness about breast cancer in men. Isabel's journey began when her grandfather was diagnosed with breast cancer, which shocked her family as they were unaware that men could also be affected. Isabel delves into the statistics, highlighting that 1% of cancer diagnoses are in men, which equates to thousands of lives. She emphasizes the importance of including men in breast cancer awareness campaigns, as they are often diagnosed at a later stage and may feel ashamed or overlooked. Isabel's goal is to tackle the lack of education and support for male breast cancer patients and their families, ensuring that everyone is included in this important cause. More from Isabel: I am part of the Caribe Girl Scouts Council. I started as a Daisy and continued till I graduated as an Ambassador. I loved going on nature adventures with my troop. As a Senior and Ambassador, I was a Staff at GS Camp, and it was the most fun experience. I was the girl who would scream the loudest of all GS songs. During 2020 and 2021, I interned with Girl Scouts USA as part of the G-TEAM. We were 25 girls from the US, Italy, Mexico, and Puerto Rico. Initially, we were supposed to plan the National Girl Scout Convention, but the pandemic hit, and plans changed. We became an advisory team for GSUSA strategy and operations. One of my most significant projects was being a producer and host of the first GS talk show, G-TEAM TV, where we discussed many topics around health and sustainability and brought guest speakers. G-TEAM TV has 10 episodes that are all on YouTube. Then, in 2021 I was 1 of 6 girls chosen to interview Michelle Obama for the launch of the badge "Becoming Me." It was a breathtaking and remarkable experience. As a GS, I got to grow professionally and truly feel GS's impact on an ambitious girl. It all started in 2019 when my grandfather was diagnosed with breast cancer. He was shocked, ashamed, and confused about how a man could get breast cancer. At this moment, my Girl Scouts mindset wanted to take action and save lives by creating awareness. Statistics say 1% of breast cancer diagnoses are in men. It may sound small... but that 1% equals thousands of lives! I noticed most breast cancer campaigns are directed to only women. Men often detect breast cancer at later stages. So, my project, "The One Percent: A Human Race Breast Cancer Awareness," began. I managed social media pages, interviewed breast cancer survivors, gave educational talks, and collaborated with well-known breast cancer organizations. As part of October being Breast Cancer Awareness Month, on January 2021, I proposed the idea to declare the second Friday of October of every year as Male Breast Cancer Awareness Day in Puerto Rico. After lobbying at the Senate, House of Representatives, and Governor of Puerto Rico, it got signed as Law 50-2021. This raises the voice for male breast cancer awareness to reach the early detection and support needed. On my social media pages, I introduced an international perspective with an interview of male breast cancer survivor Marius Soler from Spain and a national view with the interview with male survivor José Cockran. It helped me understand and share the pattern of lack of education and support. Mr. Soler told me about his journey from having trouble finding information about breast cancer in men when diagnosed and how he feels excluded from support communities. Mr. Cockran hit my heart hard when he told me his dad stopped talking to him for seven years because he thought his son wasn't "manly" enough after being diagnosed with breast cancer. I continue raising awareness that men get breast cancer because we never know whose life we can change with this information. You never know it can be a relative, dad, brother, uncle, or neighbor. A cancer diagnosis is hard; detecting it late because you didn't think you could get breast cancer, not finding a community you can relate with, or being isolated because others give in to stereotypes will make it even harder. Getting the message out there is the goal of my project. More educational efforts and more awareness being created will bring early detection, save lives, and support for patients and families, which is so much needed. The organizations I collaborated with, Susan G. Komen, American Cancer Association, and Puerto Rican League Against Cancer, have committed to continue spreading my message. I want to add that my grandfather beat stage 2 breast cancer. Now, in 2023, he's in remission. I am grateful. Now, I am so grateful and honored to have been selected for the 2023 GSUSA Gold Award Scholarship! My Gold Award has had a tremendous impact on me. I've learned so many new skills and discovered qualities in myself that will help me in my future goals. I now study at The Ohio State University, double majoring in communications and environmental policy. I aspire to be an advocate for environmental and social issues. Instagram: @theonepercent_breastcancer Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/TheOnePercentHumanRaceBreastCancerAwareness/ Here are some key takeaways from Isabel's project: 1️⃣ Male Breast Cancer Awareness: Isabel's project highlights the often overlooked fact that men can also be diagnosed with breast cancer. By sharing her grandfather's story and interviewing other male breast cancer survivors, Isabel aims to break the stigma and raise awareness about this important issue. 2️⃣ Lack of Education and Support: Isabel discovered that there is a lack of education and support for men diagnosed with breast cancer. Many campaigns and resources are directed solely towards women, leaving men feeling isolated and ashamed. Isabel's project aims to change this by providing a platform for men to share their experiences and promoting the importance of regular check-ups for everyone, regardless of gender. 3️⃣ Advocacy and Legislation: Isabel's dedication to her cause led her to successfully advocate for the declaration of the second Friday of October as Male Breast Cancer Awareness Day in Puerto Rico. This achievement, known as Law 15 2021, aims to raise awareness and provide support for male breast cancer patients. Share this show with your friends on Twitter. Full transcription available at http://heartsofgoldpodcast.com/ Sharing about the different adult recognitions offered by Girl Scouts. Receiving the Thanks Badge II this week was a huge honor for me. However, I realized that so many people do not understand the Girl Scout Adult Recognitions that are available. AS a member of out council's Adult Recognition Committee, the biggest effort we make is educating about the awards and encouraging others to nominate volunteers. Our council has worked to make the nomination process as simple as possible and we were able to grow the number of nominations received, but I know other councils receive so many nominations that the bulk of the work is reviewing and nominations to select those to recognize each year. The GSUSA awards include: Volunteer of Excellence: any volunteer working with girls Appreciation Pin: Volunteer contributing to a geographic area - this may mean a community or service unit, more than a single troop Honor Pin: Volunteer contributing to two or more geographic areas, similar to the appreciation pin, but serving a larger area Thanks Badge: Volunteer contributing to the entire council or movement with Thanks Badge II for someone that has received the Thanks Badge and continues to expand their work President's Award: This award is for a group. At our council, this is often given to a group that creates a new girl experience. GSUSA Adult Award Description and Criteria (girlscoutshs.org) Councils often have special recognitions. Make sure to check out your council's website to find out what their process is and what other recognitions may be available. I encourage everyone to consider nominating someone that has done something that has caught your attention. When nominating, my strongest suggestion is to make sure to share a personal story and share how the actions are above and beyond. Help the reviewers get to know the nominee's personality and the special work they do which deserves the recognition. All volunteers are important and likely deserve recognition. Encourage others, especially the girls, to nominate those you identify too. Multiple stories help strengthen the nomination and help your volunteer rise to the top of the process. The nomination process for the girls could be wrapped into a badge work or journey related to story telling or writing. For my nomination, this show, along with the speaking engagements I have been doing to promote the Gold Award were some of the basis for my nomination. Feedback from the girls on the impact the show had on them supported the nomination. Here is a link to a document on how to write a strong nomination: Adult Award Nomination and Endorsement Letter Examples V2.pdf (gsofsi.org) Ideas for nominations: Instead of 'she is a great cookie coordinator', share a story of how her cookie organizational skills helped girls step beyond their goals or what unique spin they put on cookie sales. For their cookie booth, they had the girls create a recipe cards using Girl Scout cookies the girls then gave to people as they walked into the grocery store. The sales at the cookie booth were double from the year before at the same location. Instead of "they put on a great day camp", have the girls share how the day camp theme impacted them to achieve something else on a related topic; or how they got six businesses in town to participate in the day camp; or how they expanded the day camp from a community event to a regional event. This example is a great opportunity to use numbers in you story. Last year this day camp had 30 girls attend, by meeting with six local businesses to gain additional support and getting the day camp flyers out two months earlier than normal and including all the schools in the county, this year's day camp served 120 girls. Don't forget the behind the scenes volunteers. Those that support your troop, service unit, or take action projects. XYZ farm assisted with connecting us to different women in the farming industry to create an event where 8 different careers were represented and girls had the opportunity to tour the working farm. We were able to open the event up to the entire county and had 50 girls attend. Plans are already underway to expand next year and offer the event council wide. Raise awareness about wildfires. Basically, let’s learn more! What areas are most vulnerable to wildfires? What can start a wildfire? At what point to people need to evacuate? How many people are impacted by wildfire evacuations each year? What happens to their homes and their belongings? What happens to their pets? What is the impact on the air quality? What is the long term impact of wildfires? What is the long term impact on people’s health? How do firefighters fight wildfires?Once girls learn more, brainstorm ways to take action to raise awareness for others about wildfires. What is it important for people to know, and how can we spread the word? Learn about hurricanes. What actually IS a hurricane? What are the different categories of hurricanes? What areas are most vulnerable to hurricanes? Why do people continue to live in areas impacted by hurricanes? How are people impacted by hurricanes? What are the most destructive or groundbreaking hurricanes in history? Is there a pattern to the severity of hurricanes over time? Why or why not and how can we tell? What can we do to prepare or minimize the risk for hurricane damage? What kinds of people and roles exist in communities impacted by hurricanes, who are responsible for planning the emergency response and strategy? You can also apply many of these questions to different types of natural disasters. What kinds of natural disasters might occur in your community? How can we learn more about the phenomenon itself as well as the response strategy, and planning and preparation? Run a supply drive. It’s really common for girls - and really for all people - to want to make donations or to do a drive to collect donations. The most important thing in these cases is to really find out what supplies are actually needed before you start your drive. It’s super common for people to want to donate clothes after a natural disaster, but often there is an excess of clothing donated and not enough food, medical supplies, baby supplies, and other needs. Make sure you find a place to collect your donations - contact shelters, organizations like the Red Cross, or other local relief efforts to find out what is most needed and what would be most helpful. Support first responders. Other than - obviously - firefighters, what other first responders are involved in different kinds of natural disasters? Are they volunteers or paid professionals? How do their lives change during the response period compared to normal seasons? What is the impact on their health and their families? Brainstorm with girls about how to raise awareness and/or directly support first responders. If you’re local to an area that has been impacted, research what relief efforts and opportunities are going on in your area. Are there volunteer opportunities at shelters? Do they need help serving meals or distributing supplies? Is there any sorting or collection that can be done? Remember that, although troops can make monetary donations to other organizations, they cannot raise money specifically with the intention to donate that money. The ONLY organization a troop can raise money for, per our non profit status, is Girl Scouts itself. However, you can receive monetary donations toward a take action project - so if you are going to use those donations to purchase diapers and canned foods, for example, then you could probably do that. If you aren’t sure if your project idea meets Girl Scouts requirements, make sure to get approval from your council before you take action. Also remember that, oftentimes, as you start to do research and reach out to organizations to see what you can do - especially if you are not local to the area impacted by the natural disaster - it is very common to hear that what organizations need the most of is money. Since this is not really the “girl scout way,” to bring about change, because it is not girl led nor does it involve hands on or cooperative learning activities, sometimes the best thing you can do is to raise awareness. Educate your girls, and encourage them to spread the word and raise awareness to others. Education and access to information IS a form of taking action, even if it feels less… impactful at times. But regardless, it is SO important and it is actually EXTREMELY helpful and you never know what you might inspire. As girls learn more and do more research, you may inspire a passion about something in particular that shapes the rest of their lives. And even if the only thing you are able to inspire is increased awareness, that goes a long way, and you’ll be surprised at how much of that kind of information girls will remember for the rest of their lives, and they’ll tell other people. So awareness campaigns, and taking time for girls to explore information and learn about the information, and then to encourage them to raise awareness in their communities or online, as long as you are practicing safe internet standards, can actually be a lot more high impact than you might think! And, here's a resource for you in the show notes from GSUSA about how to talk to your kids about natural disasters: https://www.girlscouts.org/en/raising-girls/happy-and-healthy/happy/kids-and-natural-disasters-hurricane-earthquake.html#parenting

You've probably heard because it took me forever to get this posted, but G.I.R.L. 2020 is officially being moved to online only!  This is a huge disappointment and a big blow for girls who worked their tails off to earn in-person tickets to attend the convention from cookie sales. But, GSUSA has a responsibility to their membership to keep them safe and to mitigate risk. It was the right thing to do, but we're all feeling it.

Today, we’re covering the Bronze Award process and how to help your girls complete their Bronze Award in a high impact way! It’s important to note that you should first check with your council to see what trainings, requirements, and resources they make available for volunteers with troops who are working toward their Bronze Award. You should also note that my steps don’t necessarily perfectly align with GSUSA’s. Get familiar with both your council’s materials and GSUSA’s before you start my steps. Welcome to the new mini-series Girl Scout Phraseology, part of the Girl Scout Troop Leader Experience Podcast. Today we're talking about the term "GSUSA," also known as Girl Scouts, National, and National Headquarters. In this episode, I referenced a particular document (the GSUSA brand identity guidelines), but it's actually kind of hard to find the GSUSA specific version. Here's a great council version: https://www.gsccc.org/content/dam/girlscouts-gsccc/documents/marketingresources/gs_brand-identity.pdf

Would it surprise you if we said that a large number of female leaders in America were Girl Scouts? Sylvia is a Rocket Scientist, STEM Leader, and Tech Founder, and she’s also the Girl Scouts of America's CEO. Join Laurie and Sylvia as they unravel the GSUSA vital role in the development of next-gen leaders and how they sustain their programs. Dynamic leadership programs, time-tested methods, and supportive learning environments: this is what separates the GSoA from other institutions. And how can we ever forget their famous cookies? Amazing products aside, do you know what their finest contribution to society is? It’s their active role in developing the next generation of leaders, innovators and impact makers. But how do they do it? The industrial age is almost over. Job opportunities have become reliant on technology. But in our attempt to move forward and develop new technology, today’s workforce is struggling to keep up with the changes. Very few women are in the technology industry’s talent pipeline and this often diminishes the female perspective in the workforce equation. So how can the GSoA and other institutions impact the current state of the workforce? They invest in building core leadership skills in young girls. This enables them to become functional key members in their organizations. They cultivate entrepreneurial skills from selling cookies, and as simple as it sounds, the effect is profound. They also empower girls to be action takers and decision makers in a supportive environment. They even have a STEM program that develops their skill and confidence to take part in the science and technology industries. With that said, would it be much of a surprise to know that Sylvia was once a girl scout too?! Sylvia traces the development of her leadership skills back to when she was reciting the Girl Scout pledge. GSoA was the type of environment that nurtured her transformative ideas, drive, and compassion. Now she is as an esteemed entrepreneur, rocket scientist, and thought leader. As the CEO of the Girl Scouts of America, Sylvia has done a lot to improve existing programs. She’s a staunch supporter of implementing STEM programs to spark the girls’ curiosity. She believed that there was a way to make the learning experience fun and relevant. They’ve even released new badges reflecting the latest programs. Needless to say, Sylvia is very progressive and optimistic that it will improve in the future. How can their positive impact be measured? What is the evidence that they are successful in their pursuit of excellence? The Girl Scouts Bronze, Silver, and Gold Awards are granted to girls who have developed potentially world-changing projects with promising long-term positive effects in their respective communities. We hope you have learned how these institutions play a crucial part in improving the work cycle. It's not just about Thin Mints and Samoas. The bottom line is that empowering women will radically change the workforce AND the world. The Girl Scouts USA (GSUSA) has got a collective case of the vapors over their discovery of a “covert campaign to recruit girls into programs run by the Boy Scouts.”  How dare the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) even consider allowing girls in the BSA! Does someone have to towel to wipe up the irony that drips from the brows of the conspiracy theorists who man the helm of the Left-listing GSUSA ship? Read more……
