This week, host Brenna West is rounding out this season of The Girl Scout Advantage Podcast with the inspiration behind the Dudes of Girl Scouting series—Dan Ketchum, aka Gramps. Dan has been a pillar of Camp Linden, following in the footsteps of his father as Ranger and dedicating decades to making camp a home for generations of Girl Scouts. Though he recently retired, his work at camp never stopped—he continues to volunteer and work alongside Rob Lehman, ensuring the beauty of camp lives on. Dan shares how his role evolved over time: “I just came here to do the work. I did not think I would have to be involved with the kids. And then I found out it was a matter of getting to be involved with the kids. I found I wanted to be. It just made my job so much more interesting.” In this heartfelt episode, Dan reflects on his legacy at Camp Linden, the moments that changed him, and why Girl Scout camp is such a special place for all who experience it.

Now, his mission is to make camp the best it can be: “If I can be that guy… I love to use my background to make [the counselors] job easier and to make camp better.” For Rob, the biggest reward is seeing the impact of his work firsthand: “When we can see the impact we are having with kids and being able to directly affect their experience at camp—that is really where the rewards come from.” Join us as Rob shares his journey, his love for camp, and how his behind-the-scenes work helps create unforgettable experiences for Girl Scouts.

Isabel has been in Girl Scouts since kindergarten. Isabel and her troop have plans to stay together with her friends until they graduate from High School. They are saving all their cookies and fall products proceeds for a cruise in 2027. Some of Isabel's best memories in Girl Scouting were the photo booth they had at their Bronze Award Community Pet Care Fair, doing a baking class over zoom during COVID, and going to Universal and Savannah with her troop. Scouting has given her plenty of memories to share with others like camping in the low 30's in the treehouses at Indian Echo, attending the National Girl Scout Convention in Orlando where she met scouts from all over the World, all the fun they had renovating the Heritage Room for the Marines as part of their Silver Award, and many more. Through Girl Scouts, Isabel has been able to travel too… Last summer she went to Tallahassee, Helen, and Savannah Georgia, and Asheville North Carolina. After this spring break she'll be going to India; she can't wait for that trip. Besides Girl Scouts, she's also an active member of BSA. With them, she gets to camp every month and try outdoor activities like canoeing, tubing, outdoor cooking, hiking, etc. She also gets to meet scouts from other schools and try other things. Isabel's plans include attending college to pursue a STEM career like engineering. This summer she will attend a summer program training that would help her not only explore college campuses but also determine which type of engineering she likes. https://sites.google.com/view/isabels-gold-award-project/home?fbclid=IwAR3pDi5HySifOcCznVQ86bCkCCQWafI876v9O6Y5WtS-mQargrE8LT-k2RM Key Takeaways from this episode: 1. Isabel's Girl Scout Gold Award project focused on water conservation, including replacing shower heads, installing rain barrels, and educating others on water efficiency. 2. Isabel learned the importance of accepting help from others during her Gold Award project, emphasizing that leadership involves collaboration and support. 3. Isabel shared her experience at Lowe's, highlighting the challenges of public speaking and the importance of persistence in engaging with the audience. Share this show with your friends on Twitter. What's on the minds of Central Ohio's Gen Z girls, and where will they take America? Generation Z – the Zoomers – were born after 1996. The oldest of this rising generation has just graduated from college, and the youngest are now entering their teenage years, having been born just as Barack Obama entered the White House. Their formative years have been shaped by a global pandemic and the tumult of a divided America. Studies have shown that Gen Z embraces strong values rooted in a passion for racial justice, a deep concern for the planet and environmental sustainability, and as consumers, favor access as much as (or more than) ownership. Zoomers are digital natives, the first generation to grow up from their earliest childhoods with an ever-present Internet and portable digital technology. They're the fastest-growing segment of the Amercian electorate and the most racially-diverse,with a non-Hispanic white majority of just 52%. Today I'm talking with daughter of change, Morgan Reilly, Adult Girl Scout, and Program Lead for A Place for Girls.Funded by the United Way of Maine, A Place for Girls is Girl Scouts of Maine's comprehensive after-school program for elementary and middle school-aged girls that is specifically designed to help girls understand and follow positive values, build self-confidence, improve healthy relationships, and inspire them to community action on issues they care about.Growing up, Morgan was actively involved in civil rights, diversity clubs, and competitive dance. After graduating high school, she attended Central Maine Community College where she earned two Associate degrees in Accounting and Business Administration. Professionally, Morgan has actively pursued positions that allow her to learn more about various cultures, religions, lifestyles, and backgrounds. She joined Girl Scouts of Maine as the Program Lead for A Place For Girls in September of 2019 and loves every minute of it.Morgan and I delve into this unique and important program, and how it serves the girls that take part and the community as a whole. If you are interested in getting involved with a Place for Girls as a volunteer or giving opportunities, please contact  customercare@gsmaine.org.FAQ's A Place for Girls (APFG):What is A Place for Girls? A Place For Girls (APFG) are staff-led groups that serve girls who may not otherwise have an opportunity to participate in Girl Scouting.  APFG provides an inclusive and safe environment in which girls can learn and build skills with the support of caring adults. These adults foster the growth of the individual girls while they work cooperatively with their peers and engage with their neighbors. By trying new things and building their confidence, girls are more prepared to address issues they may face at home or in their community. By working together, they overcome pressures and learn to become leaders in the world.  The goals of APFG have always included encouraging healthy relationships, improving self-esteem, growing leadership skills, and developing a life-long interest in community engagement and service, ultimately, giving girls the ability to make the world a better place. The programming is based on the Girl Scout Leadership Experience (badges, journeys, processes, etc.).Who does APFG serve, and what communities? APFG Lewiston serves girls grades K-8 who live in the Hillview community of Lewiston.  APFG Biddeford serves girls K-12 in York County. How is APFG funded? Through United Way and other grant funds/support.  Lewiston – United Way Androscoggin County, Biddeford – United Way of Southern Maine. How many years has APFG been running? Lewiston – approximately 20 years; Biddeford – approximately 15 years (APFG originally started in Portland in 1998)How can people get involved and support APFG? People can support APFG through their community connections and by volunteering.  The programs often have outside presenters with expertise on different topics of interest from financial literacy to cooking to outdoor skills. How would the Girl Scouts of Maine like to see APFG grow? GSM would like to be able to have A Place For Girls programs in places of need so that girls have the opportunity to participate and gain the benefits of Girl Scouting. To achieve this additional funding is needed in partnership with United Way, or through individual and corporate donations.Links to Check Out:Girl Scouts of Maine WebsiteGirl Scouts of Maine LinkedInGirls Scouts of Maine FacebookGirl Scouts of Maine Instagram - @girlscoutsofmaineGirl ScoutsDonate to support Girl Scouts of Maine: www.girlscoutsofmaine.org/support  Follow Daughters of Change:Website:Facebook:InstagramLinkedInMarie's LinkedIn:Daughters of Change Podcast Editor:  Sarah StaceySarah's LinkedIn Profile
