Locked On Nationals - Daily Podcast On The Washington Nationals
Let's play two! The Washington Nationals and the Pittsburgh Pirates have a doubleheader today as they get set to take on a red hot Pirates team that has been mashing through the first month of the season. Ryan breaks down the keys to a victory today, but also brings up the small margin of success when Riley Adams is behind the plate for Patrick Corbin. Why is that? Ryan gets into that here. There's one of our top prospects down in Fredericksburg who has been very slow to start the year at the plate, and it has caused some concern for Nationals fans. Ryan discusses the slow start to Robert Hassell's 2023 campaign, and gets into what this could mean for his MLB debut. The Nats lost 7-1 on Saturday afternoon to visiting Atlanta as the Braves went "Back to Back" right off the bat against Josiah Gray. Al & Mark wonder why the right hander's struggles immediately carried over into 2023. Gray led the Majors in HRs allowed last season with a dubious mark of 38. (15:30) The Nationals lineup was no match for Braves starter Spencer Strider as he struck out nine in six scoreless innings. Keibert Ruiz was the lone source of offense; as he slugged an upper deck Solo HR in the 9th. The Washington bullpen allowed a pair of runs in four frames, including Hobie Harris tossing a scoreless set in his MLB debut. (29:15) Hear a recap of where some of the top prospects were assigned in the Nationals Farm System. This includes Elijah Green, Jarlin Susana, Brady House, Robert Hassell, James Wood. (33:00) MacKenzie Gore will make his franchise debut on Sunday on the mound in the series finale against Atlanta. Gore was acquried in last summer's blockbuster Juan Soto trade to San Diego. In this episode, Chris and Eric dive into a ton of names rising or falling in their prospect rankings including Kyle Manzardo, Robert Hassell, Andrew Painter, Nick Yorke, Brady House, and plenty of catchers.
The Cleveland Guardians are beating the San Diego Padres in the seventh inning as we begin broadcasting. It has been a very close contest so far with the Guardians holding onto a 2-1 lead. Andres Gimenez continues to dazzle both with his bat and glove. He has been the team's MVP this year. Oscar Gonzalez has also gone deep in this one for the Guardians who are winning in spite of two hits thanks to them both being home runs. We get into the box score and talk about how the numbers tell us the Guardians should be losing, but they are not. The reason is the difference in strikeouts which is why the Guardians are able to extend innings and the Padres are not. We also get into some talk of BABIP luck and how it showed its head in the eighth inning. We also do a late preview of the series, trying to figure out how it is that these two very different teams are on equal ground. We end with some thoughts back to the Jose Ramirez trade that nearly happened. I talk about some of the rumored names and look at the Juan Soto deal as it had a lot of similar framework pieces to what the rumored Jose Ramirez deal I believe would have looked like involving MacKenzie Gore, CJ Abrams, Robert Hassell, and Jake Cronenworth. We talk about who might have been in the deal and who was not. We also discuss the game ending and the Guardian's lead growing in the American League Central as the Chicago White Sox and the Minnesota Twins both lost. The question that's on everyone's mind. On today's episode, Javier is talking ALL things Juan Soto — the superstar who just won himself the Home Run Derby, as a treat. He discusses Soto's value and skills as a player, how he fits for this Padres team, whether or not the Nationals may actually trade him, the potential prospects and packages that it may cost (CJ Abrams, MacKenzie Gore, Robert Hassell, James Wood, and more?), and most importantly: should the Padres pull the trigger? Ben and Carlos dive into what they like and don't like about various workouts in showcase environments before getting into some of the top players to know in the 2023 class. Outfielders like Max Clark and Walker Jenkins have impressed Ben for their hitting ability and toolsets, while lefthander Thomas White has long been a favorite and remains the top pitching prospect in the group. After that, the two discuss shortstop defense and what leads teams to projecting everyday shortstops, while also discussing the differences in training that players from Latin American receive vs. domestic infielders. Next, the two talk about how age vs. level matters for prospect evaluation and how older players shouldn't always be overlooked. Finally, the two take listener questions, including: how we view 2022 infielder Cam Collier; how Tyler Soderstrom compares to Zac Veen and Robert Hassell from the 2020 class; which prospects who just missed the updated top 100 we are high on; and more.Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/future-projection-a-baseball-america-podcast/donations
