Jim Abbott is an University of Michigan Baseball Hall of Famer and veteran MLB pitcher known for being born with one hand. His parents never treated him any differently and taught him to live independently and joyfully. Growing up, Jim played multiple sports and joined his high school football team as quarterback, but he ultimately chose baseball when he went to University of Michigan. As a kid, Jim's dad worked with him to improve on speed and technique, perfecting what's now known as the Abbott switch. While pitching, Jim would balance his glove on his right wrist, where the arm ends, pitching with his left arm. When fielding, he'd quickly switch the glove to his left hand. Despite having offers to play professionally out of high school, Jim opted to attend University of Michigan where he earned the Golden Spikes Award. 1988, Jim's junior year at University of Michigan, proved to be an exciting one as he won Big Ten Athlete of the Year, signed with the Angels, played in the Pan American games, defeating Cuba in the finals, AND helped lead the US Olympic baseball team to gold at the summer games in Seoul, South Korea. After playing with the Angels for four seasons, he was traded to the Yankees, where he and his wife navigated big city life as a young couple. In 1993, Jim famously threw a no-hitter against the Cleveland Indians, and the season was halted the following year due to the MLB strike. He eventually signed with the White Sox as a free agent and then re-signed with the Angels in 1996. Jim discusses his struggles through his professional career and how he had to meet some deeply-buried fears head-on to realize and appreciate that there's much more to him as a person than playing in the MLB. Jim retired from baseball in '97 and unlocked his passion for sharing his story to encourage others to persevere and overcome seemingly impossible challenges. mentordna.ioLinkedIn

At every level of baseball, Jim Abbott had doubters and skeptics. They doubted him in grade school little-league, high school, college, and the major leagues. He had model size, and a 95 MPH fastball. By any standard, he would be considered great. What made Abbott stand out during his amateur and pro career, were the challenges he overcame to compete at the highest level. Jim was born with a deformed right arm, and ostensibly played the game one-handed. This week we dive into his inspirational story. #JimAbbott #1998Olympics #MichiganWolverines #FlintMichigan #CaliforniaAngels #NewYorkYankees #ChicagoWhiteSox #MilwaukeeBrewers

In this week's edition of Meaningful Monday, Lee Brower talks about the powerful effect of kind words and actions, and the joy of inclusion. He recounts the inspiring story of a young boy named Jim Abbott who, despite having only one arm, was determined to play baseball as well as anyone with two. Abbott's influencer was his third-grade teacher who was instrumental in boosting his confidence and teaching him the practicalities of life, such as tying a shoe with one hand. Brower shares his personal experience visiting a trampoline park with his daughter Natalie and her two daughters, one of whom, Sloan, has Spina bifida. Amidst the hustle and bustle of the park, Brower observed a simple yet profoundly heart-warming moment of kindness - an interaction between Sloan and a four-year-old named Nora. Despite the seeming indifference of others, the perceptive Nora offers kindness and companionship to Sloan, proving that small acts of kindness indeed create waves of goodwill. Brower marvels at the wisdom and compassion of a child that made the handicapped Sloan feel included and loved. Brower concludes with an empowering question: "Who can we see that normally is invisible to us that we may be able to extend a hand to, a smile to, but make a difference in their lives?" He encourages us to acknowledge the struggles of others and to perform acts of kindness without expecting anything in return. According to him, these "Nora moments" can have far-reaching effects, potentially impacting generations. Acknowledging and learning from such acts of kindness, Brower encourages us to live more compassionately and inclusively, suggesting that we too can become catalysts for change and goodwill. He signs off, bidding us to have a meaningful week, and promising more inspiration in the next episode.

Welcome to this edition of Meaningful Monday with Lee Brower, a widely known sports enthusiast who celebrates the inspiring story of Jim Abbott. Jim Abbott, a major league baseball player for the California Angels, has never let his one-armed condition deter him from achieving his dreams. Constantly challenged by his disability, Jim faced difficulty in even tying his shoelaces. It was at this juncture that his third-grade teacher, Mr. Clarkson, stepped in. Mr. Clarkson showed him not sympathy but a solution, teaching him how to tie his shoelaces with one hand. This single act of kindness and thoughtfulness brought about a significant change in Jim's life, leading him to break barriers, achieve the deemed impossible, and make it to play in the esteemed Yankee Stadium while demonstrating an unyielding spirit of determination. What's heartening is that Jim treasures not his staggering accomplishments but the memory of Mr. Clarkson - the teacher who cared enough to make a difference. Today, Jim passes on this kindness by teaching kids that every challenge can indeed be met with a solution. The crux of the story emphasizes the need for more acts of kindness, no matter how small they may seem. These are the arrows we put out into the world, without even knowing where they might land or how many lives they might touch and transform along the way. So, let's make a difference today, just like Mr. Clarkson did, and let's inspire someone to overcome their challenges and hit their own no-hitter in life. Go out there and keep those kindness ripples moving! Stay tuned for the next episode of Meaningful Monday. Thank you for joining us!

MLB pitcher. Overcame the amazing obstacle of being born with one hand. Made it to the majors. Played 10 seasons and capped it off with a no hitter for the Yankees!
In addition to pitching in MLB having only one arm, Jim Abbott was one of the players to go straight to the Major Leagues without ever playing in the minors. There are many interesting players who skipped the minors entirely. We also discuss a list of 10 year or more players who went straight to the bigs before the MLB draft was instituted in 1965. It does not happen much anymore and we talk about the reasons for that. As always thanks to all of our listeners and followers. Jim Abbott was a standout Major League Baseball pitcher for 10 years. Because he was born without a right hand, Jim pitched, fielded, threw, and occasionally hit with only his left arm, one good enough to earn a gold medal, be a MLB first round draft pick, and throw a no-hitter in 1993 for the […]

@blcpodcast, episode 110. This week, on a delicious new episode, we're joined by Conrad from the OK Taco Show, and we're talking tacos, restaurant shenanigans, and how to make it in America these days. We're chatting about the romantic vibes at Carraba's, the most authentic Italian-American style restaurant, and it's a taste of Wichita. We're talking about the hardest part of celiac disease, how Parker was mesmerized by a hypnotist, and when we started liking rice. Conrad shares his great ideas and explains how dogs caused the Maui wildfires. Conrad's life is changed forever by the electric fiddle, and succeeding through failure. Whatever happened to Pizzaz, we don't do everything for social media. Parker has a non-political chat about protein and voting. Are you a Kohls or TJ Maxx guy? Tom Brady and Collin Jost, and Jumpman Cologne, now with Vinegar! Conrad endorses Ja Rule's Kneepads, Jim Abbott, and the Jack Nicholson Buddhist monk burrito specials. We should rent a slingshot, and we finally talk SC Versus Marvel. Parker visits a hill people podcast that he'd prefer he wasn't on, and is saved by a medical emergency. We chat about the menu, Brittney Spears's knife-dancing antics, and What's Reba Watching. Thanks, Peacock. This episode we have a lot of nothing to talk about; tennis, back to school, how many fours in a row can a croupier roll, The real Might Ducks, Jim Abbott, being in gifted and talented programs in the 90s with 100 question tests, Latin class, Eternal September and the Big Bayou Canot rail accident. We also have a big debate on the size of TV Guides.
