In Episode 82, JoAnne Tompkins (author of the debut novel What Comes After) shares how her previous career inspired her to write this story, the real-life case that partially inspired the book, and how she wrote a character-driven novel that was also a page turner. This post contains affiliate links, through which I make a small commission when you make a purchase (at no cost to you!). Highlights How JoAnne’s prior career as a trial lawyer, judicial officer, and mediator inspired her to become a writer. The real life case that inspired elements of the story in What Comes After. How JoAnne found her agent and the story of her selling What Comes After to Riverhead. How JoAnne took her characters on a journey that felt a bit like therapy without them actually going through traditional therapy. How she decided to make Isaac a Quaker and her own experience living in a Quaker community. What JoAnne did to make What Comes After introspective / character-driven AND a page turner. How JoAnne approaches writing (and how that changed over the course of writing this book). The most autobiographical part of the book. The story behind Rufus, the dog. You don’t know what to do, how to be, or what to say. For instance, for my caller, this created so much fear that a part of her just wanted to stay single. As a result, she didn’t have to deal with the constant fear and self-doubt that she’s screwing everything up. This month on Getting Smart, the podcasts will be focused on the theme of difference-making — which is also the subject of a new book launched just this week by Tom Vander Ark and Emily Liebtag, Difference Making at the Heart of Learning: Students, Schools, and Communities Alive With Possibility. To kick things off, Joanne McEachen is joining the podcast to have a conversation with Tom about her newest book, The Depthvale Detectives and the Great Education Crisis: A Guide to Contributive Learning in Schools. Joanne is the founder and CEO of The Learner First, an international education consultancy. The ‘welcome’ to her new book, The Depthvale Detectives and the Great Education Crisis, promises that all students can learn to contribute and add to the world in all manners of ways. And, when they do, no matter their plans or pursuits, they’ll have what they need to find real success. This book is a story for both educators, parents, and students about using your powers (AKA what you’re learning) for good. These powers can help you discover what it takes to contribute and how to make wellbeing, meaning, and fulfillment the ultimate outcomes of all that you do. In Joanne’s conversation with Tom, they discuss how schools can commit to contributive learning so that all students can learn how to add to the world, what is important to measure, the key elements of deep learning, and the fascinating five-phase change process that she outlines in her newest book, The Depthvale Detectives and the Great Education Crisis.   Key Takeaways: [:10] About today’s episode. [1:06] Tom welcomes Joanne McEachen to the podcast. [1:18] Joanne elaborates on what her email signature, “Meaning and fulfillment is the new wealth, and contribution is the only way to earn it,” means. [2:36] How Joanne thinks about contribution and what it means. [5:06] The ‘welcome’ to Joanne’s new book, The Depthvale Detectives and the Great Education Crisis, where she first made the discovery of the sentiment described, and what it means. I had such a great discussion with Joanne Harpel for this episode. We talk about a really difficult topic today: coping after losing a loved one to suicide. It seems that many people are uncomfortable talking about death in general … and even more uncomfortable when talking about suicide. This is a topic we haven't specifically covered yet on the show, although it's come up sometimes in the context of broader conversations, and I've had requests from listeners to talk about it. I'm so grateful that Joanne was willing to come on the show and speak with us about it now, during Suicide Prevention Month. She's an internationally renowned expert on the topic, and has so much good information to share with us. Some topics Joanne and I discuss include: Some ways suicide loss differs from other types of loss; Tips for answering the inevitable questions from people; How suicide loss can be complicated for families; Why it's important to be honest with kids about suicide loss, rather than attempting to hide it from them; How Joanne explained her brother's suicide to her son when he was three; The fact that it is safe to ask someone a direct question about whether they are suicidal; How the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline can help someone who is feeling suicidal, or can help a family member / friend who is concerned about a loved one; What the crisis text line is, and how it can help; and The support groups that Joanne runs on zoom for survivors of suicide loss. In today’s podcast episode I interview a woman who’s voice I have listened to many many nights during my fertility journey, so as you can imagine it was a great honour to interview her and hear her voice for real! My guest is Joanne Verkuilen, the creator and mastermind behind Circle and Bloom, which provides guided visualisation and meditation programs for fertility and much more. We really enjoyed recording this episode and our conversation covered everything from PCOS, Endometriosis, infertility, power of the mind, the placebo effect and how powerful this is, the need for hope and empowerment, how our body just needs the right tools to be able to heal itself and much more! I hope you enjoy it and find some inspiration from this, and that what you think and believe about your body, really does have a physical impact on your body. You can control how you are feeling. Joanne Verkuilen is the founder of Circle + Bloom which aims to share the incredible power of the mind-body connection. Her various programs and guided meditations are designed to empower anyone on their journey. Diagnosed with PCOS and the possibility of infertility as a late teen, she did struggle to conceive. She had two very different pregnancy experiences but it ended with two happy, beautiful children. When her friend Stephanie also started having fertility problems and seeing what she went through, this gave Joanne a business idea. Thus she created Circle + Bloom back in 2008. Exploring the connection between the mind and body, she created a meditation program for both infertility and cancer. Her company grew fairly into the scale that it is today and has since helped over 50,000 women worldwide. The topics we discussed were: Joanne’s PCOS and secondary infertility journey The rollercoaster, emotional pain and trauma associated with infertility journeys How Joanne found visualisation and meditation helped her best friends fertility, and went on to create Circle & Bloom with the support of Bernie Siegel (best selling author) An amazing story of a boy who overcame fatal brain cancer through visualisations How a plant-based diet has helped really helped her have healthy ovaries free of PCOS The importance of the mind-body connection and how you can reverse long term negative beliefs that can be some peoples root causes behind unexplained infertility and Endo pain. The need for taking control, hope, belief and empowerment when it comes to health conditions and not to accept negative believe patterns as the truth. The believe you can reverse conditions like PCOS and Endometriosis through reversing our thought processes. How our bodies are incredible and have the ability to heal with the right physical, mental and spiritual tools. The pain-fear-tension triangle in relation to Endometriosis and how visualisation and meditation could be used to break this and assist with reducing Endo pain. In her own words Joanne Lockwood has traded being part of the most privileged demographic in society to becoming part of one that many people will either stare at or do their best to ignore. In this show, Joanne is sharing the story of two journeys…how she came to be an international speaker, and how she came to be standing on stage in a dress as a woman.   Joanne's early life was as traditional as it gets, joining the air force, switching to a career in IT with global travel, before starting her own IT business to spend more time with her wife and young family. She even became National President of the 90-year-old men's club, The Round Table.   But it was only in the past few years that in some ways she feels that her ‘true' life began. It's a fascinating insight into a journey that most of us will never take, and don't really understand…but as Joanne says, my mission through my speaking is not to get you to understand, it's to get you to accept difference, respect the person and be kind to each other.     Enjoy!   What we talk about: Why becoming a woman at 48 was something Joanne felt she had to do. How coming out as transgender impacted Joanne's life, family and career. How much of Joanne's own ‘self' is tied up with gender identity. The reason we underestimate the power of words. What gender-neutral language is and why we should consider using it. How imposter syndrome and negative body image nearly derailed Joanne's speaking career and how she overcame them. Why we should switch from looking for the negative to finding the positive. How Joanne has grown her speaking career so quickly. How changing reference points from top of the privilege tree to being at the bottom has impacted Joanne. Why the best speakers focus on creating an emotional connection that ‘moves' people using stories. Why listening to people shows them that they matter. What micro-aggressions are and why we should be aware of them. Why you should never get complacent as a speaker and what can happen if you do.   Resources*   All things Joanne: https://joannelockwood.me SEE Change Happen @Joanne_Lockwood1965   Other Resources: http://www.recruitingbrainfood.com https://www.brainpickings.org   Live Training Class with Sarah on ‘How to Use Stories to Attract and Convert Your Dream Customer in six simple steps.'
