In Episode 82, JoAnne Tompkins (author of the debut novel What Comes After) shares how her previous career inspired her to write this story, the real-life case that partially inspired the book, and how she wrote a character-driven novel that was also a page turner. This post contains affiliate links, through which I make a small commission when you make a purchase (at no cost to you!). Highlights How JoAnne’s prior career as a trial lawyer, judicial officer, and mediator inspired her to become a writer. The real life case that inspired elements of the story in What Comes After. How JoAnne found her agent and the story of her selling What Comes After to Riverhead. How JoAnne took her characters on a journey that felt a bit like therapy without them actually going through traditional therapy. How she decided to make Isaac a Quaker and her own experience living in a Quaker community. What JoAnne did to make What Comes After introspective / character-driven AND a page turner. How JoAnne approaches writing (and how that changed over the course of writing this book). The most autobiographical part of the book. The story behind Rufus, the dog. Yet, she discovered in many a resiliency and passion for life that continues to move her. Her written work explores the small moments that hold the possibility of transformation and for finding grace in life’s darkest times. Patrick Radden Keefe’s new book, “Empire of Pain,” is a history of the Sacklers, the family behind Purdue Pharma, the creator of the powerful painkiller OxyContin, which became the root of the opioid crisis in the United States. One of the subjects covered in Keefe’s investigative work is what the company knew, and when, as the crisis began to unfold.“One thing I was able to establish very definitively in the book is that, in fact, there is this paper trail, really starting in 1997, so just a year after the drug is released, of sales reps sending messages back saying, ‘Hey, we’ve got a problem here. People are abusing this drug,’” Keefe says. “And there’s very high-level discussion by senior executives at the company, some of whom subsequently testified under oath that they didn’t know anything about this until early 2000. In terms of the timeline, it’s very hard to reconcile what they have always said publicly and what I was able to substantiate with internal documents.”Elisabeth Egan, an editor at the Book Review, is on the podcast this week to discuss “What Comes After,” by JoAnne Tompkins, the latest pick for Group Text, our monthly column for readers and book clubs. The novel starts with the deaths of two high school students, and becomes a mystery when we meet Evangeline McKensey, a pregnant 16-year-old with a connection to the dead boys.“I am the mother of three teenagers, and I’m constantly looking for the book that makes me feel a little better about how little I know about what’s running through my kids’ heads at any given time,” Egan says. “There was something about this book that felt reassuring to me, as strange as that sounds because it begins with this terrible tragedy. But it’s really, actually a book about life.”Also on this week’s episode, Tina Jordan looks back at Book Review history during this year of its 125th anniversary, and Lauren Christensen and John Williams talk about what they’ve been reading. Pamela Paul is the host. Here are the books discussed in this week’s “What We’re Reading”:“Crusoe’s Daughter” by Jane Gardam“The Secret Lives of Church Ladies” by Deesha Philyaw“True Grit” by Charles Portis“Klara and the Sun” by Kazuo Ishiguro

You know a genre of games that doesn't get the respect it deserves?  Supers games!  Superheroes (and villains) are massively popular in media right now, and just don't get the love they probably should in the rpg scene!  We figured we should talk about them a little bit.  Problem is, neither Steve knows a whole lot about Supers games.  So, for this week, we've enlisted the help of Shane Stacks (Shane Plays podcast) to come and give us an admittedly not-totally-comprehensive (but far better than we would have done on our own) lesson on the history of supers games through the years.  So come along with us, as we learn some of the history of a beautiful genre of games!   Links for Shane Stacks:      Shane Plays Geek Talk podcast and website  https://shaneplays.com/shane-plays-geek-talk-podcast/      Dungeons & Desktops (a book on the history of computer role-playing games) https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1138574643/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=1138574643&linkCode=as2&tag=shaneplays-20&linkId=de1a0351e29c2241afc2b3772495af69        @ShanePlays on Twitter      Shane Plays Discord  https://discord.gg/Dc3Y4gK Our d20Network podcast of the week this week:  Table Top Tales (formerly What Comes After), a wonderful actually play podcast featuring games in the Genesys engine, as well as Star Wars, and other games!   Game of the Week: Shane Stacks:  Level Up: Advanced 5e -- https://www.levelup5e.com/ Steve G:  BEAN! -- https://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/89574/BEAN-The-D2-RPG-Second-Edition?affiliate_id=2018399 Steve S:  Anyone Can Wear the Mask  -- https://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/339738/Anyone-Can-Wear-the-Mask?affiliate_id=2018399     As always folks, have fun, be kind to each other, and go play some rpgs!   You can reach us at meandsteverpg@gmail.com On Facebook as Me and Steve RPG Podcast On Twitter @AndRPGs Join us on Discord! Me And Steve RPG Discord  https://discord.gg/5wWNcYW We are proud members of the d20 Radio Network! http://www.d20radio.com/main/

Jezi Baba is portrayed as a witch who flies through the air in a mortar, using the pestle as the rudder. No one can follow her because she sweeps away her tracks using a broom made of human hair. Her house in the forest revolved around because it sat atop 3 pairs of chicken legs THAT DANCE. Look, you’re 30 now and that means truly embracing yourself. Turning 30 in 2020 gives you extra power. So, when things get overwhelming, lean into your Jezdaness. If those who approach you for help are pure of heart, feel free to expend your energy to make the world better. If they’re not pure of heart, or haven’t properly prepared themselves for your glory, EAT THEIR SOULS and use that extra energy to achieve your dreams. That nose piercing already signals to the world that you’re a weird and, if Jezi Baba taught us anything, it’s that there’s great power in not having fucks to give anymore.

In light of the unjust loss of Black lives in America and of the Black Lives Matter movement, we wanted to share an episode from 2018 where, for our book club, we discussed one of our most favorite YA literature books for the classroom, Angie Thomas's The Hate U Give. In the episode, we discuss the novel and share pairings including Gabrielle Union's We're Going to Need More Wine, Clemantine Wamariya and Elizabeth Weil's The Girl Who Smiled Beads: A Story of War and What Comes After, and Nic Stone's Dear Martin.    Note: We read a few passages from the text of the novel that include strong language.   Spoilers are inevitable throughout our discussion, so consider whether or not to listen if you haven't yet read the book!   Book Pairings Jen - Gabrielle Union's We're Going to Need More Wine Sara - Clemantine Wamariya and Elizabeth Weil's The Girl Who Smiled Beads: A Story of War and What Comes After Ashley - Nic Stone's Dear Martin    Books Mentioned in Classroom Connections Jason Reynolds's Long Way Down Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird Jason Reynolds and Brendan Kiely's All American Boys   Other Works Mentioned Patrisse Khan-Cullors and asha bandele's When They Call You a Terrorist: A Black Lives Matter Memoir Angie Thomas at the National Book Festival Book Riot's "Is it Time to Retire To Kill a Mockingbird?" by Jennifer Marer Jason Reynolds's books     Interested in what else we're reading? On this (longest ever) episode 87 of The Walking Dead Talk Through, Mark and I are joined by Mark’s co-host on Panels to Pixels, Steve, as we talk through The Walking Dead Season 9 Episode 5, which is titled What Comes After. The teleplay was written by co-executive producer Matthew Negrete, based on a story by TWD Chief Creative Officer Scott M. Gimple & Matthew Negrete, and directed by executive producer Greg Nicotero. We all loved this episode, though we also admit that it has some faults. SPOILER ALERT!!! SPOILER ALERT!!! The rest of this blog post requires a SPOILER WARNING!!! If you haven’t watched this week’s episode, then you probably should stop now. Visitations from departed friends… and one soon to be A good portion of this episode is seen in hallucinations. Thankfully, we see three people he needs to see. The scene with Shane was priceless. Jon Bernthal was so good in this show in the first two seasons, and seeing Rick and Shane together again, even if only for a short minute, was great. The next hallucination was Hershel, played by the late Scott Wilson. This one really made me cry, both in the joy of seeing Hershel again, and sorrow over Scott Wilson’s recent passing in real life. The third was Sasha. You could argue that Sasha’s character was the only one that probably wasn’t the first choice, but seeing Sonequa Martin-Green’s character again probably hit me the hardest of all. I think that was mostly due to me being attached to because of her portrayal of Michael Burnham on Star Trek: Discovery. One could argue that one should have been Glenn, Abraham, or even Carl, but I think Sasha worked nonetheless. The last vision is with Michonne. I said soon to be, not because she is leaving, too, but because Rick is leaving, and Michonne will lose her partner. Maggie vs. Negan!!! Maggie reaches Alexandria, intent on killing Negan, but Michonne stops her. I thought this would be a standoff between them, but Maggie ultimately convinces Michonne to let her see Negan, despite knowing what would probably happen as a result. Maggie ultimately decides not to kill him, as that would give him the release he does not deserve. How is he not dead? Rick was bleeding throughout the episode, yet does not succumb to his injuries. The bridge explodes, and it seems that Rick somehow escapes without a scratch? How did that happen? He somehow survives both his rebar injury and the explosion and is taken via helicopter to who knows where. These helicopter people!!! We still don’t know what an A or a B is, but we do know that Rick is a B. I guess we may not know more until the first TWD movie comes out. Walking Dead: The Next Generation? In the final scene, we see that there’s been another time jump, as a new group of survivors being surrounded by walkers, only to be rescued by the 10-year-old Judith Grimes! This looks interesting, and we’ll see where the story goes from here! As expected, ratings are up… As you can see from these rating and viewer charts, created by me, you’ll see that ratings were up again, with 2.07 in the 18-49 demographic, slightly above the 1.95 from last week, and 5.414 million viewers, slightly up from 5.095 million last week. What ratings will do after this episode is anyone’s guess. They could go up again, or take another nosedive. Only time will tell.

4 years, 6 Months and 2 days. That's how long it's been since the end of high school/season 4 and since our Tree Hill crew wrote their names on the rivercourt proclaiming they'd all be back and nothing will have changed. Boy were they wrong! (Sorta anyway) Season 5 of One Tree Hill begins with a flashforward that most definitely changes the way you'll watch the show. Now young adults with their high school drama behind them, our favorite Tree Hillers have gone on to do great things... maybe. Have the kids we known for 4 fast paced, drawn out high school seasons acheived their dreams or have they fallen flat on their faces? it's time to find out! Isn't there an old adage that states "The more things seems to change, the more they stay the same"? That certainly applies to the residents of Tree Hill in season 5. Sure, things have moved forward, but these kids still don't have it figured out. Of course season 5 brings us all the Tree Hill things we love; Love Triangles, Evil Parents, Psychos, Music, Basketball and Weddings. Sure we've jumped 4 years ahead, but trust us it's sorta feels like we never left high school behind this season. Strap in as One Tree Hill reaches 100 epsiodes and beyond this season and we talk all about it!    Join us as we discuss all things One Tree Hill (and then some) in our bingecasting of the series! This week our trio sits down and discusses the season 5  penultimate and Finale episodes entitled  "Hate is Safer Than Love"  and "What Comes After the Blues?"   Join as this week we sit down and start talking about all the new things to unpack in Season 5 of One Tree Hill. We happen to discuss the Jeannette's Golden hair, Mohawks, bacon and our predictions for 6 following these cliffhangers.... we also talk a bit about these episodes!  If you like what you hear, or you don't please send us feedback and don't forget to rate, review and subscribe!   Follow us on Twitter: https://twitter.com/OnlyOthPod Like Our Facebook Page: https://www.facebook.com/OnlyOTHpod/ Email us at: theresonlyothpod@gmail.com Check our Soundcloud!  Itunes Feed: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/theres-only-one-tree-hill.../id1144795491  Our website where you can find all our eps and donate is here: http://theresonlyoth.podbean.com/ We're on Stitcher, check us out and rate us!
