On this week's episode of True Crime New England, Katie and Liz talk about the murder of Canadian tourist, Louise Chaput, in November of 2001. Louise traveled to Pinkham Notch in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, as she was an avid hiker who loved the outdoors and being active. On this solo trip, Louise arrived at her destination just before it began to get dark outside, and feeling like she needed exercise from driving all day, opted to go for a short hike before checking into her hotel. This would tragically prove to be fatal, as almost a week later, Louise was found murdered. Over 23 years later, her death remains unsolved. If you or anyone you know has any information on the murder of Louise Chaput, please contact the New Hampshire Cold Case Unit at 603-271-3658 or the New Hampshire State Police at 800-525-5555. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/truecrimene/support

In this episode, we've had a few technical difficulties, so we apologize for any weird changes in our voices throughout the episode. We are in New Hampshire this week, and both of these stories have more questions than answers. First up, Lauren talks about the Bear Brook Murders and Terry Rasmussen, a man with many identities who may have connections to multiple murders and missing people. Next, Kenzie shares the eerie tales of Mt. Washington in the White Mountains mountain range. There is a paranormal phenomena that locals call the Presence, and legend says that it's the embodiment of the souls lost on the mountain. In October of 2021, a five year old boy was reported missing in Merrimack, New Hampshire after he hadn't been seen for over a month. Any missing child is an emergency. Or should be. It was May 10th of 2009 in Wolfeboro, New Hampshire, when 15-year-old Michael Burns decided to make breakfast in bed for his mom, Stacey, as it was Mother's Day and that was a standard, fun thing for him to do for her. When he walked into her room, he was horrified to find a brutal scene: his mom was dead, and she had been stabbed multiple times. Stacey Burns, a school nurse and devoted member of her church, had just gone through a fairly unsettling divorce with her husband of 17 years, Ed Burns. She also, in the time since leaving her estranged husband, began seeing a man named Jim Vittum. The relationship with Jim didn't last as he was more intense than she would've liked and Jim was not having it. To this day police are unsure who killed Stacey, however the fingers are pointed at both of these men being suspects. Join Katie and Liz this week on True Crime New England to hear the details of the case and decide for yourself who you think is responsible for the murder of Stacey Burns. Anyone with any information on the murder of Stacey Burns is asked to please call the New Hampshire State Police tip line at (603) 223-3856 or the Wolfeboro police department at (603) 569-8173. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/truecrimene/support
In February of 2001, the calm in small town Chesterfield, New Hampshire was disrupted by an investigation carried out by New Hampshire State Police. Mother and daughter Tina and Bethany Sinclair were nowhere to be found. Though the two missing Sinclairs were the focus of the small community that year, over time, updates became fewer and farther between. Eventually, the cold weather made searches of the waterways surrounding the town next to impossible. The investigation stalled out. But Tina and Bethany Sinclair are far from forgotten. The case remains open. Answers are out there. This episode was researched and written by Natalie Jones with additional writing, production and editing by Kylie Low. Please report any information to the New Hampshire State Police at (603) 223-3856 or the agency's Cold Case Unit at (603) 223-8570 or (603) 271-1255.

A judge has ordered New Hampshire State Police to release personnel records on a former state trooper who was fired for misconduct. In the past, personnel records for police officers were almost always exempt from public disclosure in the state, but that's starting to change. The New Hampshire Senate passed a “parental bill of rights” this week that would require schools to tell parents if their child has requested to use a different name or pronouns in school. Critics are warning that the bill could harm LGBTQ students. We get the latest news from around New Hampshire on this edition of the N.H. News Recap with Paul Cuno-Booth from the Granite State News Collaborative and New Hampshire Bulletin's Ethan DeWitt.

Moderna says it's preparing to make COVID variant-specific booster shots, New Hampshire State Police search for a driver who drove the wrong way on the highway for 14 miles, and Ghislaine Maxwell and Jussie Smollett get their respective days in court. Six minutes of news that will keep you in "The Loop".
This week's story appeared on an episode of ID Discovery's Still a Mystery. It was featured on episode 11, season two, about the story of a young woman who was murdered and then dismembered. Trish Danielle Haynes was a 25-year-old woman who became involved in a domestic abuse relationship. They lived together in a New Hampshire town called North Woodstock. The couple dated off and on between 2014 and 2017. After 3 years, Trish contacted the police and filed a complaint against her abusive boyfriend. He begged her to drop the charges. She gave in and agreed to drop the charges. Unfortunately, by dropping the charges, the police charged Trish with filing a false police report. Trish had returned to Florida to stay with her grandmother Sandy, who had raised her. Trish was then summoned to court in New Hampshire to face charges for the false police report.Trish returned to New Hampshire and stayed with a friend named Becky who lived near Cardigan Mountain State Park. Trish got restless and wanted to leave. She reconnected with a former classmate named Ashley Smith. Ashley and her husband, Doug Smith, lived in Grafton, New Hampshire. The Smiths offered Trish a place to stay while she waited for her court date. On January 28, 2018, Becky gave Ashley a ride to Citgo gas station to meet with Ashley and Doug. Trish left with the Smiths and returned to their home. Unfortunately, no one would ever see Tricia alive again. In September 2018, law enforcement found some of Trish's remains inside a combo washer and dryer unit in Grant's Pond. Someone had murdered and then dismembered Trish. During the investigation, law enforcement would learn that Ashley and Doug Smith both had lengthy criminal records. Law enforcement quickly descended on the Smith home, looking for evidence of the grisly crime. Today, Ashley and Doug Smith are both suspected of killing Trish. It's believed that Trish Haynes died on May 18, 2018. Since Trish's death, witnesses have come forth to the family and told law enforcement and Trish's family horror stories of how Trish was tortured and abused while staying with the Smiths.A friend of the Smiths said Trish was always at the residence, but then one day she vanished. Ashley claimed Trish had run off to another state with an unknown man. If you do research on this case or in the backgrounds of Ashley Smith (formerly Ashley Ruff) and Doug Smith, you will find many details about their criminal past. For this story, I spoke to Trish's cousin Carey, her great aunt Valorie and Chloe, who knew both Ashley Smith and Trish. If you have any additional information about this case that could help the family of Trish Haynes get justice, please contact the New Hampshire State Police at 603-271-3636. And if you would like additional information, please visit the Justice for Trish Haynes FB page. The family of a New Hampshire missing person, Trish Haynes, was asked to keep a large secret. 25-year-old Trish was no longer missing. They'd found her... months ago. But New Hampshire police wanted them to keep this under wraps. They weren't allowed to tell anyone their beloved Trishie's remains had been found. To the public, she was still a missing person... Six months later, Trish's Great Aunt Valorie had had enough, and she went public to the media that Trish had not only been murdered, she'd been dismembered and dumped in the pond while her killers still walked free. When the family started peeling back the layers of Trish's final days, they quickly realized the people responsible may be closer to home than they thought, hiding in plain sight. A New Hampshire man allegedly forced his wife to decapitate her lover after learning about their affair. And there’s a huge uproar over the light sentence two Amish brothers received after admitting to sexually assaulting their 12-year-old sister. The girl recently gave birth as a result of those attacks. Plus, Dr. Terry Dubrow from Oxygen’s “License to Kill” shares an exclusive clip from this week’s episode. Brad Card has been around politics his entire life; his father Andrew H. Card would take him out on the campaign trail. He attended Saint Anselm for politics (sound familiar?) After joining and retiring from the New Hampshire State Police, Card ventured down to Washington and began his career in public policy and lobbying. Interested in politics but not sure if you want to join the party machines? Do you like focusing on one issue rather than all of them? This episode is for you!

This week on The Freecast, we discuss the NH ACLU wins case against the US Customs & Border Protection, SWAT team activity, no more wine in the mail, and more. Featuring Host: Nick Boyle Engineered by: Matt Carano Produced by: Tom Hudson, Matt Carano, and Nick Boyle News NH ACLU wins case against U.S. customs and border protection We've covered the checkpoints issue a couple times now; Season 2 episode 11 Season 2 Episode 16 http://freecoastfreecast.libsyn.com/size/25/?search=checkpoint A state court found that CBP broke the law by setting up “checkpoints” far from the border to ensnare marijuana users and that local law enforcement violated the state constitution by colluding with CBP officers to search vehicles for drugs. As a result, the court suppressed all evidence of drug possession gathered by police at the checkpoints. CBP decided to set up a checkpoint in Woodstock, 90 miles from the border. The ostensible purpose of the checkpoint was to enforce immigration law, and officers demanded proof of citizenship from drivers who passed through. But they also brought drug-sniffing dogs, allegedly to help them “detect concealed humans.” As the American Civil Liberties Union of New Hampshire later exposed in court, the real purpose of these drug-sniffing dogs was, naturally, to find drugs. But the U.S. attorney for the state does not bring federal charges against those carrying small amounts of cannabis. So CBP asked the Woodstock Police Department to participate in its checkpoint. The two agencies decided to work together. CBP would stop drivers and have a dog sniff their cars. If the dog “signaled,” a CBP officer would search the car. If the officer found drugs, he would hand them off to WPD, which would press charges for drug possession. This cooperation was a gift to the Woodstock police for two reasons. First, New Hampshire's marijuana decriminalization law would take effect within just weeks; by working with CBP, local law enforcement could maximize its marijuana prosecutions before it lost the power to arrest cannabis users. Second, and more importantly, the New Hampshire Constitution prohibits canine searches of vehicles without a reasonable suspicion of criminal activity—unlike the federal Fourth Amendment, which permits them. Thus, by teaming up with CBP, the Woodstock police hoped to reap the rewards of searches it could not legally conduct on its own. In an astonishing passage, Rappa found that CBP had attempted to deceive the court and that the agency's real intention was to search cars for drugs with no reasonable suspicion. “While the stated purpose of the checkpoints in this matter was screening for immigration violations,” the judge wrote, “the primary purpose of the action was detection and seizure of drugs.” CBP agents were “aware of that prior to setting up the checkpoints which is precisely why they felt the need to reach out to the state and local agencies for assistance.” Rappa pointed to emails exchanged between CBP and WPD that make it “patently clear that the primary purpose” of WPD's presence was to seize their drugs for state prosecution. “As such,” he concluded, “the checkpoints were unconstitutional under both state and federal law.” https://slate.com/news-and-politics/2018/05/new-hampshire-aclu-wins-case-against-customs-and-border-protection-dragnet.html Somersworth apartment raided by SWAT on warrant for drugs, namely heroin Green st in Somersworth 19 hour “standoff” 5 people arrested, one person on the run An AR-15, a shotgun and a revolver were seized. A replica Sig-Sauer AR-15, three airsoft pistols and two crossbows were also seized. In addition to the guns, crack cocaine, loaded heroin needles and drug paraphernalia were also taken. Starting late Thursday night, periodic loud pops could be heard coming from the residence. The pops were reportedly heard as far away as downtown Rollinsford. The standoff included the use of a New Hampshire State Police battering ram attached to a Bearcat, and several heavily armed and armored law enforcement officers wearing gas masks. A small bomb-disposal robot was also on the scene. Throughout the standoff, police could be heard intermittently using loudspeakers or bull horns to attempt communication with someone inside the dwelling, trying to talk to a person named “Robert.” “Robert, this is the State Police. We have a warrant for your arrest. Please come out now and there will be no harm done to you,” said police over an amplification device. A police sharpshooter in camouflage could be seen on the ground near the scene and looking through the scope of a rifle. https://www.facebook.com/SomersworthPoliceDepartment/photos/a.400044993668252.1073741829.310496969289722/638143629858386/?type=3 “How are toys (airsoft guns) relevant? Grocers Association — to ban shipment of wine into New Hampshire from certain mail-order retailers the bill's proponents argue cost the state millions in lost sales each year. New Hampshire Liquor Commission (NHLC) spokesman E.J. Powers said since the bill was tabled, commissioners have denied permits for roughly 80 brick-and-mortar retailers shipping wine to customers in the state — “cases upon cases of brand-name products that we currently carry in our 79 NH Liquor & Wine Outlet locations,” said Powers. http://www.unionleader.com/business/liquor-commission--decried-by-group-for-gangster-tactics--over-barring-mail-order-wine-shipments-to-nh-customers-20180508 CACR 15 passes the house and senate relating to legal actions. NH History Sarah Jospeha Hale Background and Early Writing Sarah Josepha Buell was born on October 24, 1788 in Newport, New Hampshire. She received private tutoring from her brothers growing up and later became a teacher herself at a school in her hometown. She married lawyer David Hale in 1813, and the couple went to have five children. David died of a stroke in 1822, and, after working in the millinery trade for a short time, Sarah embarked on a career as a writer and editor to support her family. She went on to anonymously pen the 1823 book The Genius of Oblivion and Other Original Poems, and a few years later released the novel Northwood: A Tale of New England (1827). Famed Publishing Career and Poetry Towards the end of the decade, Hale took on a position as editor of Ladies' Magazine, later called American Ladies' Magazine. She did a bulk of the writing for the publication while also relying on other contributors for original content, though in 1837 the magazine was acquired by Louis Godey. It eventually became known as Godey's Lady's Book, and Hale continued to work for the magazine for 40 years, relocating to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and focusing on what was seen as feminine etiquette of the day. The publication would eventually have a circulation of 150,000 and published the work of prominent scribes like Harriet Beecher Stowe, Edgar Allan Poe and Nathaniel Hawthorne. Hale had also worked with childhood educators and penned Poems for Our Children (1830), which included the poem “Mary's Lamb,” later becoming widely known as “Mary Had a Little Lamb.” Over the forthcoming decades, Hale continued to release works from a variety of genres, including Three Hours; or, The Vigil of Love: and Other Poems (1848) and Women's Record; or, Sketches of All Distinguished Women, from “The Beginning” till A.D. 1850, which had multiple editions and is credited as the first work to honor female writers. Girls' Education and Thanksgiving Hale was a staunch proponent of education for girls and women, pushing for entrance into professions like teaching and eventually medicine. She helped establish the Troy Female Seminary and finance Vassar College and campaigned for women to join the institution's faculty. But Hale did not support suffrage and the feminist call for equal access to a wide range of work and did not take up abolitionist causes with other women reformers, though she took an anti-slavery stance in Northwood. Hale has also been called by some the Mother or Godmother of Thanksgiving as she ardently pushed for some time to have the day recognized as a national holiday. Thanksgiving was regularly celebrated by different parts of the country, but not in a particularly unified way. During the Civil War, Hale wrote a letter to President Abraham Lincoln and Secretary of State William Seward in 1863 calling upon the leaders to declare Thanksgiving a national holiday. The president followed suit, ultimately leading to a fixed time of annual celebration over the years. Sarah J. Hale retired at the age of 89 from the editorial and writing work that came to define and enrich her life. She died on April 30, 1879 in Philadelphia. https://www.biography.com/people/sarah-josepha-hale Suggestions/Feedback Do you have a topic that you would like for us to discuss?
