King Arthur and his court take a pause during a journey to relax in a meadow, and while doing so, a pure white stag runs through the festivities being chased by a pure white hound. Soon after they dissappear, a knight and his damsel come into view, and a third knight attacks him, grabbing the lady and stealing away with the damsel on his horse. King Arthur asks for a volunteer to follow them and find out whats going on and Sir Gawain volunteers along with his brother. A series of adventures ensue. The story of King Arthur and His Knights by Howard Pyle (who gave us Robin Hood) is one of England's greatest legends. If you haven't heard of the betrayal of Merlin (King Aethur's magician and protector) by Queen Morgana La Fay (Arthur's evil sister) and her young protoge Vivian- you are about to.  With stories like these they didn't TV and movies in the Middle Ages!

What makes an appropriate April Fool's post? How about a book that FOOLED its own art directors, editors, publicists, etc. by including copulation? I'd say that counts! In fact, you might say that Trina Schart Hyman was the ultimate April Fool's picture book creator! She snuck insults of book reviewers onto gravestones. She managed to get the missionary position into a Howard Pyle book. She even made her ex-girlfriend the evil queen in her version of Snow White (while she made herself one of the seven dwarfs). But going back to that case where doing the wild thing made an appearance of the margins of a table in a picture book, Betsy has been hoping to do King Stork with Kate for years. And let us say, it doesn't disappoint. It's just as weird, sexist, strange, and funny as you'd expect. Think The Twelve Dancing Princesses meet Tam Lin. Robin Hood: I cannot find the version of the legend of Robin Hood that I read on my grandfather's shelves when I was young. The book was old, maybe over a hundred years. The glue in the binding had long since crumbled. I remember that the one that I read was written in verse. But you know how memory is. All of this information is suspect. Anyway, if you're interested in this older version of the story, it made its way into the popular novelization of the story written by Howard Pyle called The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood which was published in 1883 and can be found here in both print and audio. Park History: I highly recommend The National Parks: America's Best Idea, which includes the story of Acadia as well as many other iconic parks. Tourism and Rolf Potts: My thoughts on travel, tourism, and tourists has been greatly influenced by a small but remarkable book by Rolf Potts called Vagabonding. Sherwood Forest in the County of Nottinghamshire lays claim to a world famous tree, The Major Oak. It may well have harbored Robin Hood and his merry men, or perhaps people like them. Howard Pyle was first and foremost an artist. He taught for several years at what became Drexel University, and many noteworthy artists studied under him, including N.C. Wyeth and Frank Schoonover. Pyle is credited with establishing what has come to be known as the modern stereotype pirate attire. Since there wasn't much to draw upon as far as historical documentation as to what pirates actually wore, Pyle borrowed largely from gypsy garments and styles to create the pirate look we know today. It's been criticized as being wildly impractical for actual sailoring. He wrote and illustrated several books for young adults, including The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood, and a four-volume set on the life of King Arthur. He breathed new life into children's literature, bringing a solid artistic background to his illustrations, raising the genre to a new level. While today's story features Captain Henry Morgan, it is a total work of fiction.
