In this episode, we're exploring stories of heroes who lost themselves in some way and had to find themselves again. We'll see how Heracles's Twelve Labors -- the things that made him one of the most famous demigods of all time -- only happened because of something he did while under a terrible curse. We'll also see how going into a frenzy makes some Norse warriors much more fearsome, and some Arthurian knights very much the opposite, and we'll hear a little about a mysterious prophecy making its way through the mythical world. Visit the World of Mythik website to learn more and to contribute your theories to our board! All stories told on Myths & Muses are original family-friendly adaptations of ancient myths and legends. Stories from ancient mythology can also sometimes deal with complicated topics for young listeners — to the mortal parents and caretakers reading this, we encourage listening along with your young demigods to help them navigate those topics as they explore these epic tales. This is a free preview of a paid episode. To hear more, visit www.louiseperry.co.ukMy guest today is the writer and archeologist Stone Age Herbalist, author of the Grey Goose Chronicles substack, and also the book Berserkers, Cannibals & Shamans: Essays in Dissident Anthropology. We started with a discussion of the mystery of the paleolithic Venus figurines: protective amulets, matriarchal symbols, pornographic objects? No one knows for certain what they were intended for, but these objects have been the focus of intense interest ever since their discovery in the nineteenth century. In the extended part of the episode we moved on to an entirely different time and place: contemporary Ghana. Specifically, Ghanaian ideas about witchcraft, and indeed Subsaharan African ideas about witchcraft more generally.
Help keep our podcast going by contributing to our Patreon! This is an episode about the shock troops of Viking Armies—the most violent, the most terrifying, the men who ran out ahead of the army to shatter shield walls and break the minds of the enemy. There are accounts of great acts of heroism and self sacrifice among them in the ancient histories—but they were also on the margins of society, mistrusted and despised even by their own side. Why is that? And what drugs were these guys on, exactly? What is truth, and what is fiction? What can we uncover about these men (and every once in a while, a woman) who were said to be so terrifyingly transformed? Today's subject is that most terrifying enigma of the ancient world: Berserkers on the Battlefield. Sponsors and Advertising This podcast is a member of Airwave Media podcast network. This chain quest looks into the neurology that comes about related to the cognitive functions. This video 7/8 is on Extraverted Sensing dominants, ESTP and ESFP.Extroverted Sensing is what's called a perceiving function. Perceiving functions help us learn and gather information. Everybody prefers and trusts one kind of information over others. This is either abstract ideas and connections, or the details our senses pick up from the tangible realm of things. Extroverted Sensing looks at what's happening now or in the very near future. And, as you can assume, extroverted Sensing prefers to take in information that you can check and verify with your senses. If you pay special attention to the actual colors, materials, and smells of the world in rich detail, then Extroverted Sensing is probably high on your stack. But if think that a tissue box kind of looks like a car with no wheels, you might be more of an iNtuitive type. Extroverted Sensing picks up and plays with all those real details in the world around you and within your body.Your dominant function does what it does compulsively. It's like an addiction. You naturally want to do more and more things that use your dominant function. This means that Extroverted Sensing types often like to embrace whatever immediate occurrences they can - especially if they have a high sensory impact. This pushes many SP types to follow their impulses or go with the thrill of new experiences. They're naturally pulled to whatever triggers more of their senses.By fully embracing the current situation, extroverted Sensors are able to notice relevant facts and details that most people skip over. Fulling diving into the moment, there's a sort of oneness that comes as the world and the self are merged. In RPG terms, I call Sensing types Warriors, so extroverted Sensing types are like impactful, offensive, berserker style warriors. They're great at using their physical body and tools like weapons as extensions of their body. They're also quick to pick up on incoming physical threats while keeping the freedom to move around. They don't brace for impact, but rather relax and open up to the heat of the battle. Berserkers skillfully jump into a situation and adapt to whatever arises. They're able to do this because they immerse themselves in the real happenings around them. They're instinctive and ready to tackle new challenges.Main brain regions used:Fp2 – “Process Manager” or “Curious Explorer"F7 – “Imaginative Mimic” or “Quick Analogizer"F8 – “Grounded Believer”F3 – “Deductive Analyst”F4 – “Expert Classifier” or “Witty Classifier"T4 – “Intuitive Listener” or “Emotive Listener"P4 – “Strategic Gamer” or “System Balancer"If this interests you, go to www.darionardi.com and buy his book(s). "Snorri cackled and sucked at his teeth. The wind blasted across the lake, cutting the snow into sharp ridges. He hurled instructions at me as if he were whipping a husky, and I spun the wheel according to Snorri's command. Our tires rolled off the beach onto the thick ice cap that froze over the lake in winter, clods of snow drumming the floorboard from underneath like the rapping of the dead." A Scandinavian murder mystery... but much more. A rollicking ride with vividly-drawn misfits through wintry desolation, quirky cop-work, and postmodern Viking derring-do!

“People Sleep Peacefully in Their Beds at Night Only Because Rough Men Stand Ready to Do Violence on Their Behalf” – Attributed to George Orwell In the episode, we examine whether or not Orwell's quote has historical evidence to support it. Are people civilized only because less civilized men guard them while they sleep? Building on the scholarship of Georges Dumézil who compared the mythologies are various Indo European peoples, this podcast argues yes. Not only that, anthropological data also suggests this contention reveals a fundamental distrust civilian leaders have always had toward warriors, especially those who were successful. When examining war honestly, which the ancients did and we do not, a historical pattern emerges that has similarities across continents and cultures. Warriors are not trusted and there is probably good reason for that.

One thing that I am a complete and utter fanboy for is a revenge story. I absolutely love a good revenge story. Alongside that I am a fan of all Viking style stories, stories of the Danes, the Berserkers, anything involving the pillaging times of the Danish settlers across the European continent, Vikings, The Last Kingdom, Vinland saga, I could go on and on. and in terms of revenge stories I've read back to back the work of master Mangaka, Kentarou Miura, creator of the legendary tale of Berserk. So when I saw the trailer to “The North” directed byRobert Eggers I knew immediately I was going to absolutely love this film, and that's exactly why I needed to watch it and discuss it on the podcast

NETHERWORLD Haunted House is open nightly, and there's no time like the present to celebrate the acclaimed attraction's 25 Seasons of Screams! Twenty-five plus years ago, co-creators Ben Armstrong and Billy Messina set out to create a one-of-a-kind and otherworldly haunted house experience the likes of which Atlantans had never seen before. The goal was to develop an attraction that would be immensely horrifying but equally entertaining – something that would become a seasonal tradition Halloween enthusiasts would return to year after year. That extraordinary vision helped attract a team of highly talented actors, makeup artists, costumers, set builders, and animatronics experts, which helped catapult NETHERWORLD to the next level and become known as one of the most influential haunts in the world. Years later, in 2017, Armstrong and Messina planted their NETHERWORLD roots in Stone Mountain, Ga., when they purchased a 10-acre complex that now houses the massive entertainment destination that the duo has worked to grow over the last quarter-century. Two yearly haunts, a post-apocalyptic-themed laser tag arena, four epic escape room games, a monster museum and a magical Midway (a carnival-like experience with games, a foam field, food trucks offering crave-worthy snacks, roaming monsters, Instagram-worthy photo ops with props and sets, and more) can all now be found at NETHERWORLD Haunted House. Several offerings, including laser, escape and the museum, are open year-round, and the haunted houses pop up throughout the year for special occasions like Christmas and Valentine's Day. NETHERWORLD is no longer “just a haunt” open during Halloween, but a space where adventure seekers from near and far come to play. “We knew developing a haunted house would be a colossal task to take on, but we couldn't have imagined where we'd be today,” said Messina. “We've come so far. It's taken a lot of hard work and dedication over the many years, and of course, we couldn't do it without the support of our incredible staff and haunt goers. We'll always remember our 25th season, and over the coming years, we look forward to continuing to build on our dream and welcome even more surprises and offerings for visitors new and old.” Don't know the full history of NETHERWORLD? Fans can read about the innovative haunt themes from over the past 25 years, like The Colber Mansion (1997), The Harvest Man (2003), The Mangler (2008), The Gargoyle (2010), Night of the Gorgon (2019) and more, here. Read more on the 25th Anniversary themes below: RISE OF THE NETHERSPAWN: Fulfilling the wishes of The Collector, a primordial monster known as The Ganoga will summon the twins, FEAR and TERROR, to lead an invasion of hideous creatures from the NETHERWORLD! Bone-crunching Berserkers and flesh-rending Rabid lead the charge, hidden deep within the swirling mists and flashing lightning of a colossal storm of shadows! Will the maelstrom conceal the crawling horrors from their helpless victims, or will they glimpse the RISE OF THE NETHERSPAWN in time to flee for their lives? Featuring: The Storm of Shadows, Trapped in the Wreckage, the Fisherman's Nightmare, Eaten by the Old Ones, the Collector's Crypt, the Starving Skull, the Jaws of Fate, the Swamp of the Lost, the Maggots of Madness, the Rage of the Rabid, the Berserkers Revenge, the Goblin Horde, the Court of the Warlord and the Soul Eater Unleashed! Twenty-five years of never-ending nightmares culminate in this apocalyptic festival of destruction as guests witness the RISE OF THE NETHERSPAWN! RETURN TO PLANET X: In the secret base known as the BOX, an experiment gone wrong has broken down the very fabric of time and space, releasing bizarrely colorful mutagenic energy through dimensional gateways all over the facility! Weird, malevolent life forms stalk victims throughout the complex, and the very fabric of reality is crumbling. Exobiologist Dr. Otto Gloman has gone into the rift equipped with a powered space suit to stop the horror and force it to RETURN TO PLANET X in 3D! Guests will put on special 3D glasses and help him defeat this bizarre invasion before it consumes the entire planet. Featuring: The Ghastly Gloaming, the Horror of the Hunes, the Malevolent Mutations, the Power of the Pyramid, the Secrets of the Serpent Men, the Paradox of Planet X, the Revenge of the Reptilians, the Primal Polymorphs, the Color Out of Space, the Mega Xeno Arthropod and the Nightmares from Beyond Time! Those brave enough to join the daunting mission will be pressured to retain a fragile grip on reality while viewing this world of horror through 3D glasses as they RETURN TO PLANET X. All tickets will be timed, dated, and limited. All tickets include access to both haunts, RISE OF THE NETHERSPAWN and RETURN TO PLANET X in 3D. Purchasing tickets online and in advance is highly recommended to guarantee entry as walk-up/box office sales are subject to availability. SpeedPasses available to expedite entry. Masks are strongly encouraged while visiting NETHERWORLD Haunted House. Masks are, however, required to enter the House of Creeps Monster Museum, the NETHERWORLD Gift Shop and the common areas of Escape the NETHERWORLD. For more details on the haunts and to learn more about COVID-19 protocols, visit www.fearworld.com. About NETHERWORLD: Created in 1997 by Billy Messina and Ben Armstrong, veterans in the film and television industry, NETHERWORLD is Atlanta's most popular self-guided, dark attraction.
