Today's episode has an interview with an immigrant from Croatia who came to Canada in part to escape Communism. Also, we have a student interviewing another student about his immigration from the Philippines. NOTE: I, Mr. Luukkonen, made a mistake in the copy for the hosts and incorrectly wrote Yugoslavia instead of Croatia. My apologies to Maja's family for this! By the time it was noticed, it was too late to re-record the hosts audio, so I inserted a small bit at the beginning of the episode about this error. My sincere apologies. Welcome to a new season of the SJT Immigration Project! The episodes will be arriving within a few weeks, so make sure you've got your notifications on. We're so happy to bring you our Fourth Season of the show! New music, new hosts, new interviews, and this year a Land Acknowledgement at the start of every episode to help remind us that the story of immigration to Canada is also about sharing the lands that we have come to--lands that are the traditional homes of Inuit, Metis, and First Nations. We are blessed to be able to come here and call this land home. We look forward to sharing all our new stories with you! See you soon.
Housing advocates say the pace of rental aid distribution has picked up, but they are still not sure enough people are applying. That's true in the immigrant community as well as you hear from the Immigration Project. The Democratic Party controlled remap is designed to make sure GOP Representatives Mary Miller and Darin LaHood will have to run against each other. It's not clear who will survive. One expert says LaHood is stronger in a general election, but Miller could take him out in a primary. And the music of the neo new wave band Fantastic Plastics has gorgeous melodies that often frame pointed critiques OF technology and modern society.

This podcast is tracking closer to where I aspire for this podcast to be: finding the right people to dispel myths and have a serious conversation. Charlotte Alvarez is the Executive Director at the Immigration Project in Bloomington. Without getting too much in the weeds, let's just agree immigration is a topic we hear a lot of opinions about but don't see much good faith critical dialogue on the subject. I hope you find this as interesting as I did. If you are interested in hearing more, please support Charlotte and all the other talented staff at the Immigration Project. Immigration Project Facebook
Amanda is joined by Pooja Asnani, director of the Immigration Project at Sanctuary for Families. Pooja details the immigration stories that have gone unreported for years. She explains just how dramatically the previous administration altered immigration processes -- specifically in ways that made it harder for undocumented domestic violence survivors to ensure safety in the US. She outlines how the Violence Against Women Act has provided vital protections, and how sweeping immigration reform and a path to citizenship would change -- and likely save -- the lives of undocumented domestic violence survivors. Today’s Black History clip is Amara La Negra on “The Real” answering, once again, what it means to be Afro-Latina
The Immigration Project is taking a new holistic approach to services. Traditionally, the project has offered legal services, but now has expanded offerings with a new Welcoming Center on Landmark Drive in Normal. Hannah Mesouani manages the center with two caseworkers.
It might be a good time for Rivian to become publicly traded, even before SUVs, trucks, and vans flow freely from the assembly line in Normal because experts say the market is pricing it like a technology company, not a car company. There are also risks that come with an initial public offering. Plus, the Immigration Project has opened a new welcoming center in Normal. Hear what it will offer. State Representative Dan Brady has a low opinion of requiring schools to consider cultural responsiveness in curriculum. Finally, listen for a report on frequently asked questions about vaccines and COVID immunity.
Immigrants have spent four years worrying about hardline deportation efforts. They're not breathing easy after the election. Hear from Charlotte Alvarez of the Immigration Project. Plus, the head of COVID enforcement in McLean County says he'd like to see municipalities - and the public - play a larger role in keeping scofflaw restaurants and other businesses in check. And One Bloomington Normal restaurant group just laid off dozens of people because it's following the rules and doesn't expect much business at least until the spring.
Zoe Bouras is a Communications and Development AmeriCorps VISTA (Volunteer in Service to America) with the Immigration Project in Bloomington, Illinois. She also serves as an adjunct instructor of Political Science at Illinois Wesleyan University. Zoe emigrated with her mother from northern England to rural Illinois when she was eight years old, and has called Arthur, Illinois, home since then. She has visited more than thirty-one countries, studying in Arequipa, Peru, as an exchange student, and interning for a summer at the Institute of East and West Studies at Yonsei University in Seoul, South Korea. Fifteen years after her own immigration to the United States, Zoe began her path to American citizenship. She hopes to be naturalized in 2021.

The Chinese Canadian immigration project explores the dynamics of migration flows between China and Canada from the mid 19th to the mid 20th century. It is based on the Canadian Register of Chinese Immigrants, a list of almost 100,000 Chinese who entered Canada between 1851 and 1949, most of whom were required to pay a discriminatory and restrictive entry fee – the so-called Head Tax. Using this core document, the project will examine migration between China and Canada, its relationships to patterns of immigrant recruitment in China and settlement in Canada, and the socio-economic factors underlying these population movements.
Part 3 of the Immigration Special covers Family Immigration. Guests include Midori Hills, Directing Attorney of the CUNY Citizenship & Immigration Project; Enzo Soderini, a paralegal; and a couple who have benefited from the Immigration Project.
