She grew up in a conservative, Christian home and earned a degree in Biblical Studies with an emphasis in Christian Ministry from Belhaven University. As a young adult, Christina assumed she had a solid understanding of how the world works. That changed when she and her husband became foster parents in 2014. The neat bow she had tied around her mental box of how the world works began to unravel. What had previously been a category of people in her mind, people addicted to drugs, now had a name, face, and an infant son sleeping in the extra bedroom down the hall. Her foster care experience gave her an up-close look at the realities of addiction, drug use, and the far-reaching impact of our drug laws. This became the catalyst for months of reading, questions, and listening as she tried to reconcile her beliefs as a Christian with the pain and suffering she saw first-hand. What she learned changed her mind. The laws she thought were the answer to keep people from using drugs she now saw as causing more harm than help to people made in God's image. Christina founded End It For Good out of her desire to invite others to listen to the voices directly impacted by our drug laws. She hopes that more people will explore the root causes of drug-related harm and consider a different approach. She wrote the book Curious: A Foster Mom's Discovery of an Unexpected Solution to Drugs and Addiction to share her story and the research and experiences that changed her mind about the best path forward to help people thrive, even in a world where harmful drugs exist. Christina is married to her college sweetheart Thomas, and they live in Ridgeland, MS, with their three sons. On the weekends, you can find her biking, in a hammock reading a biography, or playing board games with the family. My guest in this episode is Dr. Roger Parrott, the President of Belhaven University for more than three decades. Over the years, he has thought much about the value of a college education, how higher education has changed, in some cases drastically, and the real cost of a college degree. I've invited him to share some of his wisdom with us. In this podcast we discuss: How higher education has changed over the three decades he has been a university president The four “S” features most public universities use to recruit students The four “C” features that define most Christian universities The causes of recent trends in public higher education The spectrum of colleges and universities identifying as “Christian” The difference between Bible departments and religion departments and what it says about a college or university How to cut through the PR and fancy brochures when considering schools The two essential questions to ask to choose the school that is right for you Answering a common objection to Christian higher education The downside of requiring students to sign a statement of faith to be admitted The real costs of college and how to navigate the financial challenges The problem with “tuition resets” The importance of calculating living expenses, textbooks, and fees into the total cost of college Understanding good debt and bad debt How important graduate-level education is today The number one quality employers are looking for, and how the college years can help prepare you for this Resources mentioned during our conversation: Roger Parrott, “The Real Cost of College: Insights of an Insider” Belhaven University

Welcome to episode 196 of the Grow Your Law Firm podcast, hosted by Ken Hardison. In this episode, Ken sits down with the Vista Consulting Team; Tim McKey, Sarah Waggoner, and Rebekah Summerville, to discuss the best practices and strategies for streamlining legal operations to improve efficiency in your Law Firm. Tim co-founded Vista Consulting in 2009, along with his partner Chad Dudley. Vista's aim was to help plaintiff law firms reach their full potential. In December 2017, Tim acquired Chad's interest in Vista. Tim and Chad remain very close friends to this day! Tim has decades of CPA experience with local, regional, and national CPA firms. However, it is through Tim's prior consulting practice that he found his passion. He has worked with many business owners, assisting them with defining and attaining success in their business and personal lives. Developing a management philosophy with business owners along with the associated systems and processes that assist in delivering outstanding management to Vista's client teams is Tim's forté. Tim's experience and interest allow him to assist Vista clients with developing a realistic vision of their firm into the future, creating a strategic plan to achieve that vision while working with firm owners in designing their desired lifestyle. From a technical standpoint, Tim assists Vista clients in reviewing firm tax entity structure, accounting systems analysis, and financial reporting. Additionally, Tim is the managing partner of The McKey Business Group (MBG) CPAs. MBG is a small consulting CPA firm located in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The firm only works for select businesses, providing consulting services (building the roadmap for the future), as well as traditional CPA products and services. When working with Tim, there usually are “light bulb” moments…he calls them BFOs (a Blinding Flash of the Obvious). Sometimes, he says, business is just not that complicated. Tim's ability to mentor successful businesspersons, gently push them to new levels of thinking, while providing creative perspectives, contributes to Vista clients' success, as well as Vista's success. Tim's strategic vision for Vista has made a great contribution toward developing a team of consultants who take a comprehensive approach to working with their clients. Identifying and solving operational issues is not the only goal…enhanced profitability and having fun doing it is real success. Personally, Tim has 2 daughters, Sarah and Caroline, 3 granddaughters, Mary Grayson (MG), Ryleigh, and Kate, 1 grandson, Timothy, and 1 wife, Jodi. A self-proclaimed business nerd, Tim enjoys reading, pondering and discussing future business trends, models, and disruptive change, tennis, exercise, and the pursuit of the “abundant life. Sarah Waggoner joined the Vista team as the Director of Talent Acquisition in 2021. She began her career in Birmingham, Alabama as a Med/Surg nurse in 2008, then moved to Kingwood, Texas where she worked in Med/Surg and labor and delivery. She's also served as the director of a Teddy Tennis franchise, a pro at Kingwood Country Club, and the Children's Director at Kingwood First Baptist Church. Using her diverse background, Sarah brings incredible organizational skills and a unique perspective to our team. In her role as Director of Talent Acquisition, Sarah is responsible for all talent acquisition efforts, helping clients navigate the process of finding, identifying, and onboarding top talent. She works closely with the Vista Operations Consultants to understand their client's talent needs. Sarah graduated from Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama in 2007 with a degree in nursing. She also lettered four years in tennis at Samford. Sarah lives in Kingwood, Texas, with her family. Rebekah Summerville joined the Vista Consulting Team at its inception as an Accounting Consultant. She's worked with Vista founder Tim McKey at McKey Business Group since 1996 and still serves as their Chief Financial Officer and CPA. She manages to balance the dollars and cents for both the McKey Business Group and the Vista Team. She has a knack for explaining complex accounting concepts in a no-nonsense, easy-to-digest way. Rebekah graduated from Belhaven University in Jackson, MS, with a degree in accounting. She's a huge fan of both of her athletic kids and enjoys spending lots of time cheering them on at all of their sporting events and practices. When she's not on the bleachers, you can find her spending quality time with friends and family. She also enjoys running and Pilates as a stress relief. In his new book, The Hope of Life After Death: A Biblical Theology of Resurrection (Intervarsity Press, 2022), Professor Jeff Brannon traces Resurrection and Redemption from Genesis 1 to Revelation 22, taking the Bible as a unified whole—not as a library of disparate sources. He is a Biblical scholar and a Protestant Christian in the Reformed (i.e. Calvinist) Tradition. I also asked him to explain our need for salvation and a savior in the first place (which is the same topic I took up in the previous episode with Catholic theologian David Basile). In his book and in our discussion, Jeff Brannon explains the necessity of the sacrifice of Jesus. “Without Jesus as the suffering servant, we could not be reconciled to God, could not have access to God's presence, could not be a part of God's kingdom, and could not inherit eternal life—both new spiritual life in the present and bodily resurrection life in the future” (pp. 103-104). He also explains how, in addition to being the sacrificial Lamb of God and the messiah, Jesus is an example and antecedent for us all: the “firstfruits” (p. 124; cf. 1 Cor 15), “leading the way for his people.” Jeff Brannon is Professor of Biblical Studies and Chair of the Biblical Studies and Ministries Department at Belhaven University in Jackson, Mississippi. Today we welcome Cory C. Brock and N. Gray Sutanto to speak about their book, Neo-Calvinism: A Theological Introduction (Lexham Academic), which is an excellent initiation and explication of neo-Calvinism as a nineteenth- and early twentieth-century movement in the Netherlands. It was “a revival of Reformed confessionalist theology in the Netherlands roughly beginning with the rise of Kuyper as a theology, with the founding of the Vrije Universiteit in 1880, the formation of the Gereformeerde Kerken in 1892, and its systematization in the theological output of Herman Bavinck (p. 4).” Cory C. Brock is minister at St. Columba's Free Church of Scotland in Edinburgh and adjunct lecturer in theology at Edinburgh Theological Seminary and Belhaven University in Jackson, Mississippi. Heh is the author of Orthodox yet Modern: Herman Bavinck's Use of Friedrich Schleiermacher. N. You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates."
