Travel Tales From Beyond The Brochure

Hello! My therapist would object to the way I was going to start this pod, so instead I'll say 'thank you for bearing with me and accepting the slightly less-than-regular issuing of this pod'. Anyhoo. I have an excuse this time, and it's very much the subject of this pod. I've been away from home, on a road trip around Ireland for a week and a half. My friend Anne-Laure wanted to visit Ireland and in summer 2020 we'd sketched out plans to do a 10-day trip there, but things kept getting in the way. Mainly Covid. But we finally managed to get there in mid-July 2022, and because of being away, it seemed the most obvious thing to pod about. Topics discussed in this episode are: * Non-Binary day, week, and socialising * Background to our road trip, and what made it unusual as far as my trips are concerned * Irish sport, and resulting travel concerns * Dublin Student Accommodation * Our various B&B stays across the country * St Patrick's Cathedral, Dublin * Other religious sites visited, often called St Mary's * The joy of Knock * Various country houses and ruined abbeys * The Rock of Cashel * Ruins of Ancient Ireland * The Burren * The Isle of Inis Mor and the Cliffs of Moher * Dingle * Father Ted * The Asexual Capital Of The World * A distinct lack of road signs * Beer and sausage rolls A PDF transcript of this episode is available. As always, if you have anything to say about the topic, or indeed about my podcasting in general, leave a comment or let me know. I have a newsletter with extra content, and where I'll be mentioning future podcast episodes if you want to make your own contribution. I also have a Patreon - if you like what you hear, and want to access exclusive content (or just to show your appreciation), then head on over. My friend AnneLaure provided the introduction, whilst my friend V gave the interspersions, which are all song lyrics spoken in completely not the correct rhythm. This is on purpose. Until next time, bye for now. :)

Dara Molloy is a truly fascinating individual. Along with the likes of John O'Donohue and John Philip Newell, Molloy is considered to be among one of the few experts on the subject of Celtic Spirituality. In this episode James sits down with Dara to discuss his spiritual journey from Roman Catholic priest in Dublin to Celtic priest, monk and druid on Inis Mor (the largest of the Aran Islands). They also discuss a number of topics explored in Dara's upcoming book titled ‘Holy God – Journey from Belief in God to a Spirituality.' These include, what Celtic spirituality is and how it differs from organised religion; how the dominant religions have misunderstood the notion of faith; and why monotheism and its globalisation is a root cause of the loss of both cultural diversity and biodiversity on the planet. In the final part, Dara shares his personal wisdom and recommends that we explore the vast resources that can be found in the Celtic spiritual tradition. Welcome to episode 6 of the Thin Places Travel Podcast. Today we have Irish American musician, Joanie Madden from the band, Cherish the Ladies as a guest. And we'll be featuring the Irish Workhouse Centre in Portumna, County Galway as a thin places travel destination.     Joanie Madden, Irish American Musician   In our last episode, we talked about a connection to the landscape fueling a person’s creativity and passion artistic outlets. We discussed the concept that where you are can have an effect on artistic productivity. It seems that Ireland is full of artists – performing artists, literary artists, visual artists, musicians. Perhaps there is something in the land that stirs the creative soul.   This week as we celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, we were fortunate to be able to chat with Joanie Madden, one of the founders of the all-woman Irish music band, Cherish the Ladies. The group has been actively performing for 33 years, has been nominated for a Grammy and has recorded and released seventeen albums. Their newest album Heart of the Home has just been released this month and it features several tunes written by Joanie Madden.   Joanie is a child of Irish emigrants. She was raised in the Bronx, NY. Her father was from Portumna in the eastern part of County Galway, and her mother was from Miltown Malbay in West County Clare.   Joanie is an All-Ireland flute and whistle champion. She has sold over a half million solo albums and performed on over 200 recordings including 3 Grammy-winning albums. In 2016, Irish America Magazine named Joanie as one of the Top 50 most Powerful Irish Women in the World.   Segment 2 - Interview with Joanie Madden LINKS Cherish the Ladies Cherish the Ladies on Facebook Cherish the Ladies on Twitter  Joanie Madden on Twitter  Cherish the Ladies on Youtube Segment 3 - The Irish Workhouse Centre - Portumna, County Clare To tie in with Joanie’s reflections on her father’s hometown of Portumna, and her moving musical tribute to the Portumna workhouse, we’re highlighting the Irish Workhouse Center in Portumna as our featured destination for this podcast.   Portumna is a town in east County Galway that was established by the Normans in the twelfth century. The town sits on the River Shannon - the longest river in Ireland - and in its day, it was an important river crossing.   A ferry crossing was established in the early fourteenth century and today a dual lane roadway - the N65, crosses the Shannon in Portumna connecting County Galway with County Tipperary.   The name Port Omna means landing place or “port” of the oak. People have been living in Portumna since the late stone age.   Portumna has a castle, part of which is open to visitors - and a forest part with walking and cycling paths pathways through woodlands and along the shores of Lough Derg. In that forest are the ruins of Portumna Abbey, which was founded in 1426 by Murchad O’Madden.   But today Portumna is well known for its restored Irish Workhouse interpreting a very painful part of Irish history - but perhaps a necessary part to remember and understand.   A private group has developed this workhouse site into the Irish Workhouse Centre to find new uses for the old buildings and to bring significant social, cultural and economic benefits to the area. It is now the arts, heritage and cultural centre for the region. Last year the Centre won the national Heritage Council award for its heritage activities.   We are fortunate to have with us today Steve Dolan, a historian based in East Galway and the Manager of the Irish Workhouse Centre. Steve holds an MBA from the National University in Galway and an MA in History from the University of Limerick. He is the editor of the South East Galway Archaeological and Historical Society Journal. This year his book - All Out: The Birth, Growth, and Decline of Cricket in County Galway, 1825-1925 is being published.   Segment 4 - Interview with Steve Dolan of the Irish Workhouse Centre in Portumna   LINKS Irish Workhouse Centre South East Galway Archaeological and Historical Society (SEGAHS) Portumna Castle and Demesne  Portumna Abbey located in the Forest Park Portumna Forest Park Thank you for listening to the Thin Places Travel Podcast. Songs for the Dead

Seriously…

Keeners were the women of rural Ireland who were traditionally paid to cry, wail and sing over the bodies of the dead at funerals and wakes. Their role was to help channel the grief of the bereaved and they had an elevated, almost mythical status among their communities. The custom of keening had all but vanished by the 1950's as people began to view it as primitive, old-fashioned and uncivilised. Now, broadcaster Marie-Louise Muir sets out to ask what's been lost with the passing of the keeners. She travels to Inis Mor, a remote island off the west coast of Ireland, where one of Ireland's last professional keeners - Brigid Mullin - was recorded by the song collector and archivist Sidney Robertson Cowell in the 1950's. Brigid's crackling, eerie evocation of sorrow echoes down the years to capture a tradition in its dying days - a ghostly remnant of another world. Dr Deirdre Ni Chonghaile is a native of Inis Mor and thinks modern funerals have taken on an almost Victorian dignity in a society that in general has become far less tolerant of extravagant displays of grief. Deirdre believes it was this very extravagance that helped lead to keening's demise. Its emphasis on the body and human mortality was in direct conflict with the notion of a Christian afterlife and the influential role of the keening women may even have been regarded as a threat to the patriarchy of the Church. As the story of the keeners blends with the waves and winds of Ireland's west coast, Marie-Louise reflects on the passing of this once rich tradition. Producer: Conor McKay. Recordings: Bridget Mullin with Sidney Robertson Cowell, keen performance and conversation. Smithsonian Folkways, Ralph Rinzler Archives. Neil O'Boyle, keen demonstration on fiddle.
