In a dim corner of my room for longer than my fancy thinks A beautiful and silent Sphinx has watched me through the shifting gloom. Inviolate and immobile she does not rise she does not stir For silver moons are naught to her and naught to her the suns that reel. Red follows grey across the air, the waves of moonlight ebb and flow But with the Dawn she does not go and in the night-time she is there …

Populorum Progressio, Pope Paul VI, 1967This was a class lecture, delivered in late 2020. (Sorry for the occasional distractions) It focuses upon one of the most significant of the papal encyclicals, one that engaged the concept of liberation theology. Paul VI considered himself a Third World Pope, someone whose responsibilities stretched far beyond the Catholic world. This is an extremely deep, very intellectual encyclical. It would be good if you would download the encyclical and have it in front of you as a reference as you listen. If we use the word “radical” to mean “going to the roots of a problem” then this document is radical. It is also very sympathetic to the uprisings in Central America at the time. Pay special attention to the Three New Teachings, i.e., things the pope is saying that pushes church teachings beyond what it had been before. This was released in 1967 on Easter weekend. The pope read it to an assembled crowd of cardinals and other church leaders. If you have listened to the podcast on Rerum Novarum, these two go together well, but are quite different. Yes indeed, Darren talks with the one and only Steve Vai. They cover his new album "Inviolate," performing, composing and music theory, staying creative, meeting Joe Satriani, and of course, there's some stuff about David Lee Roth! At the top, Darren and Steve find the Diamond Dave and related news when there isn't much: how many Vegas bands there were, and how many members (!), Sammy Hagar's Las Vegas shows and Michael Anthony signing 2 Dave-era Van Halen songs, and a mystery solved -- why Bart Walsh was blurred out of the "No Holds Bar-B-Que" movie?
Steve Vai's contribution to the world of rock music and to the electric guitar is profound. Starting out under the tutelage of Joe Satriani, Steve is a three-time Grammy Award winner,fifteen-time nominee and a legendary performer across the world. He started out as a transcriptionist and guitar player with Frank Zappa in 1978, replaced Yngwie Mlalmsteen in Alcatrazz in 1984 and then went on to work with David Lee Roth playing guitar on his most seminal albums. Since parting ways with David Lee Roth in 1989, he has significantly expanded his horizons across a prolific solo career spanning 10 albums, countless live albums, soundtracks and media appearances including playing the role of Jack Butler in the Walter hill film Crossroads. Despite being hailed as a trailblazer and a genius Steve continues to hone his chops and explore new techniques. The electric guitar has no boundaries for Steve Vai, as far back as 1985 he designed the Ibanez JEM guitar, a unique instrument that incorporated a series of groundbreaking designs that have since become staple features throughout the guitar industry. In 1989 he designed the Ibanez Universe, the first production seven-string guitar. Steve blew everyone away with his latest creation dubbed The Hydra an instrument that was aplty described as the intersection of modern technology collides with hammered brass. Inspired by a mad max film and his love for steampunk design the hydra is a triple-necked guitar and bass with sympathetic harp strings and a and dizzying array of in-built technology, all wrapped up in a gloriously steampunk finish. His latest release, inviolate is an ambitious, fabulously produced album that combines his guitar approach, exploring new techniques with inspiration drawn from a wide array of genres and influences, including the worlds of Celtic and Indian music. On stage Steve is a commanding and show stealing presence. I had the good fortune to work with him for a couple of his shows in India and Singapore. I caught up with Steve early in the morning to talk about his latest release Inviolate, his role in the new Foo Figthers film Studio 666, his inspiration to create the hydra, working with David Lee Roth.Frank Zappa and all things creativity and technology. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- For more tour dates, to check out Steve's latest work with the Hydra, and for tickets go this his website https://www.vai.com ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Follow Tales from the Road Facebook https://www.facebook.com/talesfromtheroadofficial Instagram https://www.instagram.com/talesfromtheroad/ ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Subscribe on Spotify | Apple Podcasts | Google | Gaana |Audible You can also read, watch, listen via our website https://www.tftrmedia.com Hosted & Produced by Vikram Chandrasekar and Moving Pictures Media
Wholly WOW! To think Universe Eternal Omniscient Mind (UEOM) provides our human evolution intelligence a recognizable cosmic field for metaphysical intellect's generalized conceptioning as a cogently clarifying frequency tunability is more than amazing! This is especially so as the PRJWBCSchemes continue to perpetuate insidiously harmful, least economic, most costly scenario episodes that divide to conquer whatever can separate a mind and heart from its inherent benignity. Access to the knowledge is close at hand. But in our educated ignorance humans of a mind, an evolution species, the very thought of conceptualizing transceivered frequency information may as well be from an alien planet. So far afield has our innate faculty been taken, the further into self-deluding redundant claims we go. And yet, as metaphysical intellect's anticipatory design science curiosity includes the closest-packing-spheres assemblies within its reality basis and writing practices, the conceptualization experience provides increasingly more self assurance that benignity and accurately disseminated content is possible as discrete control measures.Integration, Bucky Fuller wrote, discretely controls the coordination of all complex interactions. So, we can confidently inquire, asking. What, if not the continuity of conscious life, which becomes personality as a product of complex periodic interactions known as cycles or periodic recurrences of a higher frequency order is also contributory to obsoleting the subconscious ignorantly fearful cautionaries of the PRJWBCS: Politics Religion Justice War Belief Complex Schemes? Multi Grammy award winner Steve Vai is hailed by many as the greatest guitarist of all time. He has worked with some of the greatest names in the history of rock music. He is a composer, producer and has just released his tenth solo album; “Inviolate”. Vai spoke to The Sync Report hosts Colin O' Donoghue, Rose Ganguzza and Jason P Rothberg about his early music inspirations, being taught to play guitar by Joe Satriani, attending Berklee College of Music and going straight into working with Frank Zappa. Vai's career has spanned more than 40 years, working with such rock luminaries as David Lee Roth, Yngwie Malmsteen and Whitesnake, touring with Steve Lukather, Joe Satriani and John Petrucci as well as Generation Axe, a supergroup Vai formed with Zakk Wylde, Yngwie Malmsteen, Nuno Bettencourt and Tosin Abasi. Vai has also been in the movies! Steve Vai is arguably one of the finest rock guitarists on the planet. His inventive approach to the instrument has afforded him some incredible opportunities over the past 40 years and today we'll explore some of them, including the importance of meeting and working with Frank Zappa. We'll also discuss his upcoming album release titled "Inviolate", which is set to drop this Friday, January 28. This is Vai's tenth solo album and quite possibly his most musically diverse collection of compositions. Yet, when you lay your ears on this record you'll hear Vai's classic signature from start to finish, especially when you experience the track "Teeth Of The Hydra", which was recorded with a very unique guitar that he named 'Hydra' that was built through a collaboration with designers at Hoshino. We'll discuss this and so much more on this episode of Inside MusiCast.
Joining me this episode for an online chat is Australian author Karen Turner! Karen is the author of three novels, Torn (2013), Inviolate (2014) and most recently in 2019, Stormbird. Prior to this, Karen published an eclectic compilation of short stories, All That and Everything, many of which have won literary awards, including the Society of Women Writers Vic Biennial Literary Award, and the Free XpressSion Literary Competition. Stormbird, is a romantic fiction novel set in 1943, and delivers the reader to the once glorious Broughton Hall, where war-widowed young mother, Jessica Barrow, lives with her children in the now dilapidated manor house. It's here that she discovers a mysterious diary and through the story held within, she finds an independence and passion she's never known before. This new-found strength will be put to the ultimate test when she encounters a stranger; a German bomber who has been shot down near Broughton Hall. It also has the touch of the paranormal in the form of a ghostly presence! Too Much Tuscan Sun: Confessions of a Chianti tour guide by Dario Castagno A Tuscan guide whose client base is predominantly American, Dario has spent more than a decade taking individuals and small groups on customised tours through the Chianti region of Tuscany. Too Much Tuscan Sun is Dario's account of some of his more remarkable customers, from the obsessive and the oblivious to the downright lunatic. It is also a primer on Tuscany--its charms and its culture. Structured around a typical Tuscan year, Dario takes us through the sights, smells, and sounds of Chianti during each of the twelve months, including the festivities and pageantry that accord with the season, most notable the Palio-the bareback horse race that consumes the social energies of the people of Siena for all of July and August. Dario also intersperses an account of his own life and times-that of a transplanted British "little lord" who learns to love the wilds of Chianti; of his discovery and adoption of abandoned peasant farmhouses; of his apprenticeship in the wine industry; and of his arduous transformation from bohemian layabout to thriving Tuscan guide. Karen suggests pairing this funny, charming book with a sharp and sprightly Aperol Spritz, some warm homebaked ciabatta and fresh olive oil for dunking! The Moon In The Water by Pamela Belle Thomazine, born heiress to the Heron fortune, is orphaned at the age of ten. She grew to womanhood at the great house of Goldhayes with her cousins. Wild, headstrong Francis, the rebellious cousin, has his heart captured by Thomazine, but the sweep of time and politics was against them. Francis was banished, imprisoned and Thomazine was forced into bleak and loveless wedlock with Dominic, whom she could never love. As the drums and steel of war marched across England, with King against Parliament, their love must meet its test and so Thomazine rides North, forsaking all else for her heart's desire. This is one of Karen's favourite books, with its meticulously researched account of life during the 17th century English civil war as well as a delicious forbidden love story.
