In this compelling episode, Pastor Karl dives into Romans 14, exploring what he calls "Applied Christianity." This chapter challenges both seasoned and new believers to navigate the balance between personal freedom in Christ and public restraint for the sake of others. Pastor Karl unpacks the concept of spiritual maturity, emphasizing private liberty and public restriction as biblical principles rooted in love. He addresses the tension between those strong in faith, who live in the freedom of grace, and those weak in faith, who adhere to stricter rules, using the historical context of meat sacrificed to idols to illustrate disputable matters. Through practical examples like alcohol, Halloween, and homeschooling, Pastor Karl highlights how non-essential issues should not divide the church. He introduces the "law of love," urging listeners to prioritize others' faith over personal freedoms, and explains the Bema Seat judgment, where Christians are rewarded for their sacrifices, not judged for salvation. What do you do when your beliefs collide with your ballot? Would Jesus Vote? And if so, who would he vote for? Recently Josh Howerton of LakepointeChurch gave a sermon titled "How To Vote Like Jesus". We use a couple of clips from that as a springboard into this incredible conversation. We are not on the same page in this one. Our exploration veers into the moral complexities of voting and Christian responsibility in political engagement. We wrestle with the idea of rebellion against God by not voting, dissect the notion of third-party futility, and debate the ethics of supporting a system that may contradict Christian values. With humor and sincerity, we reflect on America's perception as a Christian nation and the divisive nature of current political discourse. As we raise our glasses in fellowship, we invite you into our community, where shared beliefs and joy in connection shine through every earnest exchange. When it comes to voting, how should we balance character and policy? “If I'm voting for a politician,” journalist David French suggests, “I have a test. One is: Do they have the character necessary for the job? And the higher the position they're seeking, the more character that is necessary. And number two: Do they broadly agree with me on the most important policies?” In this episode, Mark Labberton welcomes journalist David French (opinion columnist for the New York Times; formerly The Atlantic, The Dispatch, and National Review) for a discussion of character, policy, and principles for faithful, virtuous engagement in polarized American politics. French's commitment to Christian faith, moral character, and reasoned policy has emerged from his experience as a former commercial lawyer, military lawyer, and former president of the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression. A political conservative, French has throughout his career been an advocate for First Amendment rights, pro-life individuals and organizations, and the ideals of democracy. He describes himself as “an evangelical conservative who believes strongly in a classical liberal, pluralistic vision of American democracy.” Together, Mark and David discuss his Christian upbringing; his personal partisan commitments; the importance of character in party politics; the importance of nuanced and reasoned policy; why he's voting for Kamala Harris in order to save conservative politics; two Bible verses for this election season; how to respond to our culture of fear; and how to secure a more courageous, loving, and humble politics. About David French David French is an opinion columnist for the New York Times, and previously wrote for The Atlantic, The Dispatch, and National Review. He is a New York Times bestselling author of Divided We Fall: America's Secession Threat and How to Restore Our Nation. He describes himself as “an evangelical conservative who believes strongly in a classical liberal, pluralistic vision of American democracy.” He is a graduate of Harvard Law School, the past president of the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education, and a former lecturer at Cornell Law School. He has served as a senior counsel for the American Center for Law and Justice and the Alliance Defending Freedom. David is a former major in the United States Army Reserve. In 2007, he deployed to Iraq, serving in Diyala Province as Squadron Judge Advocate for the 2nd Squadron, 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment, where he was awarded the Bronze Star. Show Notes Divided We Fall: America's Secession Threat and How to Restore Our Nation “I was a First Amendment litigator with a writing hobby.” Background in the Acapella Churches of Christ: a Restoration Movement from the early-19th century “It turned into something kind of separatist, sectarian, and ferociously legalistic.” “I grew up with a real grounding. grounding and reading the Bible, which actually, ironically enough, was the seed of me leaving the church of Christ.” “I was a Cold War conservative and a conservative Christian. And they were related, but not, but they weren't inextricably tied together. So for me, my, you know, ideology was downstream of my faith, but I didn't think that my ideology was the inevitable result of my faith.” Pro-Life Activism Representing pro-life individuals Existential clash: the confrontation between the Soviet Union and the United States Why David French is voting for Kamala Harris in order to save conservative politics “My party loyalty has always been related to two things. One is the ideology of the party and the other one is the character of the party. And the party leaders and the people that I vote for, I've always had a character test and an ideological test.” Bad character and bad policy—”why would I be attached to that? There's no claim on my loyalty there.” The importance of character “If the conservative perspective that I have wants to have any purchase in American politics, MAGA has to lose. Donald Trump has to lose.” Federalism: a practical understanding that smaller government is better. Republican Party increasingly embracing a pro-choice platform “If you're going to have a healthy two party system, the distinctions should be around good people of high character approaching policy solutions from different perspectives.” “One of these parties has sort of left the norms of American. political engagement.” “I voted for Mitt Romney more than Mitt Romney's probably voted for Mitt Romney.” “If I'm voting for a politician, I have a test. One is: Do they have the character necessary for the job? And the higher the position they're seeking, the more character that is necessary. And number two: Do they broadly agree with me on the most important policies?” “I have very little patience for those people who say I'm somehow not a Christian for voting for a pro-choice candidate. When they're voting for a pro-choice candidate who's been adjudicated a sex abuser, that is difficult for me to discern how that is a more Christian stance.” Clear, independent thinker Logical reasoning and courageous statements A living faith by which we think through ideas “There's a fine line between stubbornness and courage.” “In these last 10 years, I've really had to ask myself: Who are you really?” David French's parents' example of faith and virtue Learning from World War I and World War II history “Some of the worst things that have happened in American history have happened because people didn't want to do hard things.” “I think the sanctification process, though, is difficult. It means that you're being exposed to constantly your own sin is being exposed to yourself.” Mark asks: “What do you want Christian people, thoughtful, committed, curious, uncertain, tenuous Christian people to, to do between now and the election?” 2 Timothy 1:7—“God did not give us a spirit of fear, but of power, of love, and of sound mind.” Micah 6:8—”What does the Lord require of you, O man? What is good? To act justly, to love kindness, and to walk humbly before the Lord your God.” Ideological diversity: be curious, seek disagreement “If you just show affection for people and curiosity towards their views, anger tends to drain out of a room.” “College students are full of anxiety about conflict.” “Fear not.” The A Team—arming up for battle “And they find out that a lot of these folks that they were taught were going to be their enemies are actually just super kind, normal folks.” “They're equipping them to fight, not to love their neighbor, fight their neighbor, not love their neighbor.” Mark asks: “What handles would you give people in living in a fear dominated moment in American history?” “In receiving anger and fear, do not try to build up a bulletproof thick skin. … Because you know what that does? It often walls you off from legitimate criticism.” Thick skin, soft heart. “An enormous amount of fear is rooted in a sense—a feeling—of non-belonging and loneliness. Isolation and loneliness.” “People who are more isolated and alone are drawn to these authoritarian movements.” “Ease the loneliness, build the connection. … Lean into relationship and presence.” “It was just stunning to me that, against all evidence of scripture, Christians were consigning people to eternal damnation over a vote in a presidential election.” Miles Law: “Where we stand is based on where we sit.” Kindness, humility, not living a fear-based angry life “If you're in a community where the fruit of the spirit dominate, you can withstand a lot of disagreement.” Production Credits Conversing is produced and distributed in partnership with Comment Magazine and Fuller Seminary.

Step into the political and spiritual journey of Stephen Frank, as the Greenville native and insurance businessman lays out his vision for a political office once held by Adam Morgan. Drawing from his formative years steeped in the teachings at Bob Jones University, Stephen weaves a narrative that's both personal and profound, revealing how his Christian faith is the bedrock of his life and political ambitions. He's not one to shy away from hot-button issues such as pro-life initiatives and the unwavering support of Second Amendment rights, all underpinned by the belief that our rights are a divine endowment, not a governmental gift.As we navigate the complexities of politics and policy, we grapple with the potholed roads of bureaucracy and the quagmire of government overspending, seeking solutions through accountability and restructuring. Discussions pivot to the challenges of unchecked growth, the distortions of corporate welfare on free markets, and the disconnect between conservative citizens and a less conservative legislature. In the throes of this episode, Stephen Frank and I dissect the morality of abolishing state income tax and the resistance faced by reformists disrupting the status quo. Today I talked to Roslyn Weiss, editor of Hasdai Crescas: Collected Writings (Library of the Jewish People, 2023). Hasdai Crescas spent his life in public service - as a rabbi and community leader in desperate times in 14th-century Spain. Despite having limited time for writing, he produced several important works, which Collected Writings presents in their entirety. The first of these, Epistle to the Jews of Avignon, he wrote in the immediate aftermath of the anti-Jewish riots in Aragon in 1391, chronicling the unimaginable horrors the Jewish communities endured - mass conversions, suicides, deaths, and the loss of great Torah scholars - as well as his own personal tragedy, the murder of his only son, "a lamb without blemish." To counter Christian efforts to convert Jews, Crescas composed two polemical works, only one of which has survived, The Refutation of the Christian Principles. Written in 1397-8, it offers reasoned arguments to challenge ten principles of Christianity. A great halakhist, Crescas penned many responsa, some of which are known because they were quoted by later halakhists. But only one extant work contains halakhic material - the Passover Sermon, dealing (in part) with the laws of Passover. Because of the urgent communal demands on his time, Crescas was unable to complete Lamp of the Lord, the two-volume work which was to be his response to Maimonides' Mishneh Torah and Guide of the Perplexed. His magisterial work, Light of the Lord, a work of intellectual rigor and deep religious sensibility, was his answer only to the Guide. In this brilliant work, completed in 1410, just before his death, Crescas rejects the purely intellectual Aristotelian God in favor of Judaism's God of love. It is a work suffused with love for God, the Torah, the rabbinic tradition, and the Jewish people. Learn more about your ad choices. Subscriber-only episodeAre we witnessing the erosion of America's key institutions, and can bringing back Christian principles halt this deterioration? Our latest episode probes into this critical question, exploring the historical significance of religion in shaping the fundamental ethos of America. We spotlight Patrick Henry, one of America's most iconic orators, and delve into his timeless wisdom, particularly his 'Give Me Liberty or Give Me Death' speech, which underscores his staunch belief in religious freedom. The episode further navigates the crucial part Christianity played in structuring America's societal values, drawing on the tenets laid out in Article 16 of the Virginia Bill of Rights, a document Henry significantly contributed to. We argue that reviving Christian principles in the fabric of our institutions, including education, the military, and law enforcement, is the only enduring solution to the issues currently plaguing our nation. So tune in to this thought-provoking episode to gain a fresh perspective on America's current state and a deeper understanding of its Christian roots. The American Soul Podcasthttps://www.buzzsprout.com/1791934/subscribe

How could the U.S. Constitution be inspired, since it included the right to have guns and allowed slavery to continue. In this episode of Religion Today host Martin Tanner explains why a citizenry authorized to own guns actually inhibits crime. He also describes how the Founding Fathers were inspired by Isaiah 33:22 to create three branches of government: executive, legislative and judicial. How this Biblically inspired system creates a balance of power. Martin gives examples of how we know the U.S. Constitution was an inspired document much like the Mosaic law was inspired, but was not perfect. Yet it paved the way for the higher law Jesus brought. Do you ever wonder if why you feel so exhausted after being around some people? Does it seem like something is off, but you try to rationalize it away or blame yourself, rather than calling out sin or false accusations someone made toward you? If you feel like your mind is being twisted, like you are never heard but often minimized or dismissed for your thoughts, feelings, or needs, you may be in a relationship with a person who is a narcissist.
When leadership or those in a position of authority do not stop abuse when brought to their attention, they are enabling sin. Jesus is a God of love and peace, not a God wanting victims to suffer but a God who frees captives. Toxicity and Abuse warp true Christian principles, and are not what God intended.
Do you deny your own needs and feelings because you think it's the Godly thing to do? Even if it enables sin? God gave each of us a self that needs saving by Jesus through our choice of Him as our Lord. God did not make us to save other people from their own choices and consequences at our expense. If you think you might be in a codependent relationship, or wonder what codependency traits may be, listen in.
In this episode Costi Hinn provides several Christian principles for voting and offers biblical truths about keeping earthly elections in perspective. All Christians ought to be eager to see our countries and communities positively impacted by our gospel witness, and having the right perspective on voting and politics is important to seeing that happen.
Many Americans believe they are free, and that is a good belief to embrace. But if we hold up modern freedom to the lens of the King's perfect law of liberty, we must deduce that the authentic article of freedom has been replaced with a manufactured version because all freedom begins with the King.Well over two decades ago, I became thrilled to learn from my American Christian history teachers that freedom and property go together. The evidence of freedom is property. At the same time, what makes America so unique among the nations of the world is that America is the first nation to embrace the distinctly Christian idea of property. The Christian idea holds that property is first those substances you don't see with your natural eyes and without which the property you do see and believe to be yours is not.The failure to understand the most sacred of all property is why most Christians in America need permission to use and dispose of the goodness of the King in their lives.Link to the James Rose tribute referenced in this episode. The other 6 days a week, Sean Morgan hosts shows about defeating America's enemies through civic solutions. There are two kinds of Christians on the King's land: those who have words only and those who have the power through their lives to back up the King's words coming out of their mouths.Power is where all the kingdom action lies. And that is why divine power in the life of the King's subjects is guarded by problems and conflict. In this next installment on the Christ-centered, governmental principles of America's founding-era, I present how people are either instruments of the King's virtue unto victory over America's enemies or instruments of Satan's degradation unto oppression and Babylonian captivity.Character is God's plan for the resurrection of your family government today.Click here to access documents and files mentioned. The other 6 days a week, Sean Morgan hosts shows about defeating America's enemies through civic solutions.
