It's New Year's day, Monday, January 1st, A.D. 2024. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Adam McManus Don't abandon Armenian hostages A day after a limited prisoner exchange between Armenia and Azerbaijan took place, a coalition of human rights organizations is urging the United States not to abandon Azerbaijan's remaining Armenian hostages, reports Christian Solidarity International. In a letter to U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken, Christian Solidarity International, Genocide Watch, Humanitarian Aid Relief Trust, and the Armenian National Committee of America pointed out that dozens more Armenians are still being held in Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan.   These include eight current and former members of the elected government of the Republic of Nagorno Karabakh who were kidnapped during Azerbaijan's attack on Nagorno Karabakh in September, during which the entire Armenian population of the region was expelled.   On December 13th, Azerbaijan released 32 Armenian soldiers. In exchange, Armenia released two Azerbaijani soldiers who had been detained after infiltrating sovereign Armenian territory and killing an Armenian civilian.  Please pray for the peace of God which in Philippians 4:7 is described as “surpassing all understanding.” Maine secretary of state disqualifies Trump from primary ballot Last Thursday, Maine's Democrat Secretary of State Shenna Bellows said former President Trump is disqualified from holding office and thus she has removed him from the state's primary ballot under section 3 of the 14th Amendment over his role in the January 6, 2021 rally at the U.S. Capitol. In her decision, she wrote, “The U.S. Constitution does not tolerate an assault on the foundations of our government, and Section 336 requires me to act in response.” In an interview with CBS News Thursday night, Bellows further explained her reasoning. Listen. BELLOWS: “I'm mindful that no Secretary of State has ever deprived a candidate of ballot access under Section 3 of the 14th Amendment. But no presidential candidate has ever engaged in an insurrection. My job was to evaluate the facts presented at the hearing, the evidence that was produced, and the record graded in that proceeding, and to evaluate that and make a ruling, which is what I did.” Bellows added, “Given the compressed timeframe, the novel constitutional questions involved, the importance of this case, and impending ballot preparation deadlines, I will suspend the effect of my decision until the Superior Court rules on any appeal or the time to appeal … has expired.” The state of Colorado has also removed Donald Trump from the presidential ballot as well. Biden strategy: Distract America from economy, claim Trump threatens democracy In an internal election memo released Thursday, Biden's campaign manager, Julie Chavez Rodriguez, said, “We are treating this election like it will determine the fate of American democracy – because it will,” reports Bloomberg. She also said, “The threat Donald Trump posed in 2020 to American democracy has only grown more dire since then. He is running a campaign on revenge and retribution – and at the expense of Americans' freedoms.” Not surprisingly, the Biden campaign seeks to de-emphasize the economic catastrophe of his first term during which prices have increased cumulatively by 17.4 percent. Instead, they are convinced that the winning political strategy is to put democracy itself at the center of Biden's re-election argument. Right now, in the RealClearPolitics average of eight presidential polls, Trump is beating Biden 46.8% to 45.5%. COVID mask mandates return to hospitals in four states and D.C. Hospitals across the U.S. are reinstating COVID-19 mask mandates as the JN.1 variant becomes the dominant strain spreading throughout the country, reports Newsweek. Hospitals in California, Illinois, Massachusetts, New York and Washington D.C. have all brought back divisive rules mandating masks for selected people in medical settings. The Centers for Disease Prevention and Control has recorded a 10.4 percent increase in COVID-19 hospitalizations across America in the week leading up to December 16.  Additionally, there has been an increase of 3.4 percent in deaths related to the coronavirus in the same period. Mailman rescues toddler And finally, a Massachusetts mailman, named David Moulton, delivered more than his routine batch of letters. For the first time in eight years of walking his route, he delivered a 3-year-old toddler to safety, reports CBS News. MOULTON: “They say the ways of God are mysterious you know. I just happened to be in the right place at the right time.” The boy had managed to somehow leave Salem Community Day Care in Salem, Massachusetts.  MOULTON:  “He ran past me this way for us to the park. I thought he was running to play with kids or something like that. And then all of a sudden, I saw him zip by me again, and I'm like, ‘He's headed to a busy street.'” Unbelievably, the toddler was walking the sidewalks and streets, in the cold, for nearly 30 minutes.   MOULTON: “He's got no shoes and no jacket on. This isn't right. I'm wearing four layers of clothes. He was shaking. He was shivering. He was cold.” Moulton took action. MOULTON: “I have children of my own. I can't just let him head to the street, stand there, and do nothing. I just scooped him up before he got into the street over there.” The postman told reporters that the toddler was about to cross Congress Street, a very busy thoroughfare. MOULTON: “I'm very glad that it ended well. It could have been real bad.” After rescuing him, Moulton called 9-1-1. Thankfully, the medical personnel who arrived determined the boy was just fine. In Matthew 10:29-31, Jesus said a sparrow “does will not fall to the ground outside your Father's care. And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. So don't be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.” The police have referred the case to the District Attorney's Office in Massachusetts and the Department of Children and Families which are investigating Salem Community Day Care. 5thPodiversary andWWAR For AprilShow NotesWe are celebrating our 5th“Podiversary” this month and, as a subject, we have decided to return to yearone and revisit some of the authors from our very first year.Kathy reported on Jana DeLeon who was featured on episode 8 for her book “Louisiana Longshot.”Kathy found that she has 24 books in the series now and reported on “Flame and Fortune” the 22ndbookin the series. It's New Year's in Sinful, and the competition for the New Year's Queen is heating up as the warring churchesgo head-to-head. Fortune Redding is not the sequined dress kind of woman, but reluctantly agrees to partakein the debacle so that Ida Belle and Gertie can best their nemesis, Celia, who's put up former Sinful mean girlRJ Rogers.RJ and her friend Brock Benoit left plenty of devastation in their wake when they fled Sinful after high school. So when they return and Brock is found dead, there's no shortage of suspects. Fortune, Ida Belle, and Gertieknow all too well what it's like to live under suspicion of a crime with no resolution. When good people becomethe targets of gossip, they know they have to rush to unravel the tangled lives of RJ and Brock and expose akiller before the wrong person's reputation is ruined. Or worse—they're arrested for a crime they didn'tcommit.Ann then reported on “A White Hot Plan” by Michael H. Rubin. Mike appeared as our second authorwe actually interviewed on episode 9 for his book “The Cottoncrest Curse.” Michael writes his books incollaboration with his wife Ayan Rubin.A group of alt-right terrorists decides that now is the time―and New Orleans is the place―to make anexplosive statement that will force the world to acknowledge the superiority of the white supremacistmovement. Disgraced former New Orleans homicide detective Starner Gautreaux is now a poorly paidsheriff's deputy relegated to writing his weekly quota of speeding tickets in a sleepy south Louisiana parish. His mundane life is all-too-predictable until several unusual events cause him to suspect something isseriously amiss. While the local coroner classifies the resulting deaths as accidental, Starner's priorexperience leads him to believe that not only are they homicides, but also that they signal something far moresinister. Taut action bubbles up from the swamps of Louisiana to the hidden haunts of underworld bosses, from small-town life to urban grit, and from a high-speed highway shootout to a terrifying confrontation in theheart of the French Quarter. White supremacists seek to impose their will on a city swamped with carefreetourists, but Starner Gautreaux is determined not to let that happen. We broke the episode into two parts due to the length and will broadcast part 2 tomorrow.

It's that time of year once again when I get out my crystal ball and tell you exactly what is going to happen in this the Year of our Lord 2023 (here's how I performed last year).   You can normally rely on your intrepid author to have strong, even if wrong opinions on markets, but I must confess to not feeling as strongly about things as I usually do. My biggest concern is how Chat GPT - the new chatbot that can generate intelligent text about, it seems, almost anything - is going to change the world. In fact, my greater concern relates to the extraordinary influence its designers are going to wield on the global narrative. So it is a humble Dominic Frisby you find today, one lacking in clear vision, nervously looking up at the egg that is no doubt going to be on my face in a year's time. Nevertheless here are 14 things I think we will see in the year ahead.* Commodities have a good year. Oil is currently in a downtrend, so it may have a bit more to fall. Metals took their hit in mid-2022 and appear to have made their lows. For the last couple of months, they have been rising, but both fossil fuels and metals have suffered from many years of underinvestment, which has hurt supply. China opening up should see increased demand. I see a good market for metals and energy in the first half of 2023 at least. Possibly the second half as well. Let's set some targets. Brent, currently at $80/barrel, revisits three figures.* And Copper revisits with $4.80/lb.* Yield becomes a thing again. With choppy, uncertain markets, but sticky inflation, investing for yield rather than capital growth becomes a much bigger theme in 2023 than it has been for a decade or more.* This is a classic recessionary bear market. This bear market proves to be more of the recessionary variety, rather than an all-out collapse. It's a tricky, grinding market, but the S&P 500 gets back towards its old highs at 4,800. Briefly.* Emerging Markets outperform. That's something we haven't seen in a while, but their time has come again.* Biotech becomes a thing again too. Remember how back in the day biotech was all the rage? Somehow it was overlooked in the last tech bull market. Not anymore.* European banks have a good time of it too. Thanks to Swen Lorentz for pointing out to me just how uninterested people are in them. Normally a good sign.* Bitcoin also has a good year. It's hard to think of a time when sentiment in bitcoin has been as low as it's been these past few months and yet it's still $17,000. It has a market cap north of $300bn. The mining hashrate hit all-time highs this autumn, meaning the network is more robust than it has ever been. The tech is stronger than ever.Usage is growing in East Asia, Africa, especially in Nigeria, and anywhere there is a currency crisis (which is a lot of places - Turkey, Lebanon, Argentina, and Venezuela). It solves the many issues facing the member nations of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation - China, India, Russia et al - which are desperately seeking a non-dollar alternative money to trade with that doesn't rely on trusted third parties. (I doubt they'll go for bitcoin by the way, even though it does everything they want it to).Bitcoin's Lighting Network solves the problems facing Elon Musk who is looking to incorporate a payments system into Twitter. There are so many reasons to be bullish about bitcoin, yet sentiment could not be worse. It will not always be this way. My prediction for 2023: bitcoin will have a good year.Tell your friends about this amazing article.* Silver fails to deliver yet again. I'm getting so complacent with my predictions about silver that I'm bound to be proved wrong. If you can count on anything in this cruel world, it's that silver will let you down. Silver can't get above $30.* The US dollar - up and down. It's perhaps the world's most important price and it has periods of strength and of weakness, but it ends the year higher than where it started.  As I write, it's at 102.* CBDCs - they're coming. Currently, there are two countries in the world with functioning CBDCs - the Bahamas and Jamaica. Several other Caribbean nations are at the pilot stage, including St Lucia, St Kitts, Dominica and Grenada. As demonstrated by the reaction to Covid-19, risk-averse governments tend not to trail blaze, but to follow the lead of their neighbours. In this regard, it is likely that a couple or more Caribbean nations could have functioning CBDCs before the end of 2023. Such a roll-out is easier in nations with small populations. But my forecast is that in 2023, probably in the latter part of the year, a nation with a population greater than 15 million rolls out its first CBDC, likely one of Canada, China, India, France, Saudi Arabia, Ghana or Nigeria.* Ukraine. I know Dominic Frisby is the first person you turn to when you want insights into the Ukraine conflict, so here they are: The Ukraine War will not end before October. There will not be a nuclear war and Vladimir Putin will still be Russia's president by year's end.* Gold. Everyone always wants to know what I think about gold, however. "Well, this is a bull market, you know!" While it's currently overbought, so don't rule out a pull back, I think it goes up. Miners have a good time of it too. Gold retests its old highs around $2,080. But then it finds a way of being frustrating. It always does. It's gold. * Your Bruce-y Bonus sports prediction. Manchester City wins the League. Southampton, Wolves and Bournemouth go down.So there we are folks. Everything you need to know about 2023 in one handy list.Have a great year folks - and stick to those resolutions. It's New Year's week and many of us are looking to 2020 coming to an end. It is also a time for reflection and making plans for the new year. This wee we want to acknowledge that the struggle IS real!!! In every sense of it - but in particular for transitions. Successful transitions don't just happen. They require: work, planning, sacrifice, blood, sweat and tears. This week we hear from survivor, Mia Nevarez, about how sometimes you simply have to survive in order to thrive. Mia is truly vulnerable and shares some intimate details from her life that, perhaps, she's never shared before. That is part of what makes this episode special. There was so much goodness in my conversation with Mia that I had to make it two parts. Here are just a few of the key takeaways from this week's episode: Do what works for you Sometimes you have to look at your life like it isn't yours in order to survive Breakdowns lead to breakthroughs It's OK to NOT be OK It's all about choices Someone else's reality doesn't have to be yours Be sure to tune in next week for the conclusion of my conversation with Mia Nevarez. It's New Year 1901 and the Boers have been busy over the Christmas Period. Jan Smuts and Koos de la Rey defeated General Clements in the Magaliesberg. Two Boer commandos have also entered the Cape Colony and attacked British positions at various locations. On the 28th December a commando attacked Helvetia between Machadadorp in the Eastern Transvaal and Lydenburg when a British garrison was overrun with the loss of 200 men. Generals de la Rey and Beyers were harassing British convoys to the south and west of Rustenburg in the Transvaal. Jan Smuts targeted Modderfontein just east of Johannesburg and defeated a British force leading 1500 men having been reinforced with Liebenberg's commando. He then defeated a British relief column of 3000 men sent as reinforcements just for good measure. On the other side of the Transvaal, action was taking place on a more massive scale as the plan took effect to combine General Louis Botha's commando with General Ben Viljoen's burghers. They wanted to shut down the Delagoa Bay railway line which was now crucial for British supplies. While Milner worried, and Kitchener's new scorched earth policy began to yield initial results particularly in the Eastern Transvaal, Deneys Reitz was dealing with a crazy horse as he and his brother continued on the campaign with General Beyers. In December, he had been part of the Koos de La Rey attack on General Clements in the Magaliesberg at a place called Nooitgedacht. Remember how the mountain fight had led to the British withdrawing and the Boers seizing a great deal of material. The first thing Reitz did was ditch his deadly Mauser in favour of the British Lee-Metford rifle. The Boers were running out of ammunition for the German weapons, and had seized tens of thousands of rounds from the British along with rifles, so naturally they kitted themselves out with the latest English equipment. He gave his large English chargers away in order to reduce his stable, doing as most Boers did - riding with one or two spare horses. Deneys, however, retained what he believed was probably one of the strangest horses in the entire Boer army. “My father had purchased him in the Lydenburg district from a homegoing burgher, who omitted to tell us that he was possessed of the devil…” The horse, in a nutshell, was crazy.
