IntroductionWelcome to today's special episode! We are thrilled to host Angela Hanscom, the esteemed author of Balanced and Barefoot. This LIVE Q&A event was inspired by our insightful discussions during the book club within the CIRCLE Membership. After diving deep into Angela's valuable insights, our members were inspired to initiate separate discussion groups with parents at their schools. This excitement ultimately led us to invite Angela to join us for this engaging session.Angela J. Hanscom is a pediatric occupational therapist and founder of TimberNook—an award-winning developmental and nature-based program that has gained international popularity. She is the author of Balanced and Barefoot: How Unrestricted Outdoor Play Makes for Strong, Confident, and Capable Children. Hanscom is also a frequent contributor to The Washington Post and in 2019 won the Small Business of the Year Award for the State of New Hampshire. Keynote: The Decline of Outdoor Play – And the Rise in Sensory Issues (90 minutes)As we continue to decrease children's time and space to move and play outdoors, we are seeing a simultaneous rise in the number of children that are presenting with sensory and motor deficits. At the same time, classroom teachers are observing more and more children having trouble with attention, falling out of their seats in school, increased clumsiness, and even aggressiveness with games like tag on the playground. So, how can we reverse this alarming trend of sensory and motor issues in children? How can we ensure that children are fully engaging their body, mind, and all of their senses?Using the same philosophy that lies at the heart of her popular TimberNook program—that nature is the ultimate sensory experience, and that psychological and physical health improves for children when they spend time outside on a regular basis—Angela Hanscom offers several strategies to help children thrive in outdoor environments using a therapeutic approach to nature play. "My relationship with food is incredibly complex. I hate food that is unpredictable."In this episode of the Neurodivergent Experience, Jordan James and Simon Scott discuss their complex relationships with food. They share their experiences with 'fussy' eating, body dysmorphia, and trauma-related food aversions. They also talk about the impact of neurodivergent traits on their eating habits, such as demand avoidance and hypersensitivity. They highlight the unpredictability of food textures and flavours for neurodivergent people and the preference for routine and familiarity.TakeawaysNeurodivergent individuals often have complex relationships with food, influenced by factors such as picky eating, body dysmorphia, and trauma-related aversions.Neurodivergent traits, such as demand avoidance and hypersensitivity, can impact eating habits and food preferences.Childhood experiences with food, including restrictions and negative associations, can shape an individual's relationship with food as an adult.Developing a healthier relationship with food may involve exploring new flavours, managing sensory sensitivities, and addressing underlying emotional issues. It is important to be mindful of how we talk about food and body image, avoiding negative language and promoting self-acceptance as understanding and supporting neurodivergent individuals' unique food preferences and challenges can promote their overall well-being.Parents should avoid labelling their children as 'fussy eaters' and instead create a positive and supportive environment to encourage trying new foods.Chapters00:00 RTN Sponsor01:43 The Complexity of Neurodivergent Relationships with Food06:26 Childhood Experiences and Food Challenges09:20 Food as Comfort and Trauma Response13:15 Struggles with Eating and Starvation25:15 Negative Associations and Social Exclusion27:10 Conclusion and Support for Neurodivergent Food Preferences32:10 Navigating Unpredictability: Food Textures and Flavours for Neurodivergent People45:06 Childhood Memories and Associations with Food50:42 Supporting Neurodivergent Children in Developing Healthy Eating Habits52:09 The Impact of Food on Neurodivergent Individuals' Cognitive Abilities53:07 Promoting Positive Body Image and Mindful Eating for Neurodivergent IndividualsGet an Autism and ADHD assessment in the UK with https://www.rtnmentalhealthsolutions.com/ Use the Discount Code RTN23 when you make your initial enquiry through the RTN website or the website portal.Instagram: @theneurodivergentexperiencepodFacebook: The Neurodivergent ExperienceYouTube: @TheNeurodivergentExperience Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. On this penultimate episode of the season, I am joined by Hannah Daly, an Occupational Therapist and author who I actually worked with privately to get my son's sensory profile assessed. Here she helps me better understand the relationship between sensory issues and anxiety. What comes first, the anxiety or the sensory issue? Is anxiety always at play? Why do we have sensory issues? How do we know when we need to seek professional help? How does it differ from kids to adults? Are social anxiety and sensory issues inextricably linked? Whether you're a parent of a child with sensory difficulties or you're an adult experiencing anxiety as a result of sensory demands in today's world, this should be an informative and helpful episode. This podcast was originally released June 6, 2022 and though I talk about “real life” after the pandemic, many of the lessons still apply. Coparenting can be a tough road but we must remember that children will thrive as long as both parents are loving and kind to one another. We'll move onto sensory issues, which many kids now display; are they visual, auditory, or tactile? How can you help your child manage this? And lastly, how I personally use my knowledge of my attachment style to bring it to a relationship. Jamie's Homepage - www.jamieglowacki.com Oh Crap! Welcome Back No-Problem Parents! Is your child getting enough sleep? Are you? Can you breathe through your nose? Does your child sleep with their mouth open or their butt in the air? Do your kids have a hard time swallowing pill? Are they still wetting the bed? Have you been told your child will outgrow it? My guest today is going to answer all of those questions and more! Sheree Wertz is a Mom, registered dental hygienist, oral health coach, an independent orofacial myofunctional therapist, author and speaker. Her own challenges with her daughters sleeping, sensory issues, oral habits, bedwetting, and mouth breathing led her to the field of myofunctional therapy and opened her eyes to how our health, sleep, and overall well-being is directly impacted by the tongue, our breathing, airway, and facial development. She has always been passionate about the little-known link between our mouth and overall health. After learning about myofunctional disorders and the wide-reaching effects they have on the body, Sheree knew she needed to take the leap from traditional dentistry to a more holistic and functional approach. She is so excited to be able to help patients improve their quality of life by supporting healthy breathing, jaw, and airway development in children and by helping adults resolve symptoms and conditions related to these disorders.
