IT CAME FROM AQUARIUS RECORDS is a feature-length documentary about the SF-based independent record store, Aquarius Records. Having closed in 2016 after 47 years, this small apartment-sized store championed local, underground, independent, and challenging music to the masses - most memorably with their infamous bi-weekly, college essay-length, new-release lists.This doc has interviews with the aQ owners dating back to 1970, other record store owners from around the world, musicians, label heads, music journalists, and INTENSE music collectors. Interviewees include Matt Groening (The Simpsons), Wayne Coyne (Flaming Lips), Bruce Ackley, John Darnielle (The Mountain Goats), Ty Segall, and Liz Harris (Grouper).Aquarius Records influenced and enriched countless peoples' musical tastes with their curated selections - but this film also shows the realities of an indie record store trying to survive in an increasingly difficult market of brick-and-mortar music shops, especially in the ever-changing and price-gouging Mission District of SF. Her work ranges in size from a knot that can fit in the palm of a child's hand to room-sized installations that are sought after by private collectors. Following long careers at Apple and as owner of legendary music shop Aquarius Records, she launched her studio in 2015. Select clients include the National Geographic Society, the De Young Museum, Nobu Hotels, Google, and the Kering Group, and her work has been covered by Wired, The New York Times and Martha Stewart. Windy's book about her work was published by Abrams in 2019.Andee Connors is a drummer, musician, artist, DJ, music curator, photographer, former record store owner, former record label owner. He ran a record store called aQuarius recOrds in San Francisco from 1994 - 2016. He also ran tUMULt, a record label that existed for close to 20 years, with more than 50 releases. He's been playing drums since 9 years old, touring and recording since 19. Bands included math rock / post rock band called A Minor Forest, a grind pop / noise-pop band called P.E.E., a SF punk band called J-Church, a stoner metal band called High Tone Son Of A Bitch, and an experimental post rock band called Lumen. He played drums in two Boadrum performances with Japanese experimental outfit The Boredoms: with 77 drummers in 2007 in Brooklyn, NY, and then 88 drummers in 2008 in Los Angeles as well as extra drums with noise rock outfit Shit And Shine.Currently in Common Eider, King Eider, a ritualistic doom/drone duo, and My Heart, An Inverted Flame, another duo, heavy, droney, repetitive and shoegazey - only synths and drums!He has radio shows on Gimmeradio.com called Battleflutes & Sideways Skulls, and Castle Weather on Repeater Radio in the UK. Episode 44 is a conversation with Los Angeles based writer, stand-up comic, competitive kettle-bell athlete and old school East Bay punk (via Arkansas) Bucky Sinister. The conversation begins by revisiting a subject explored in prior episodes, the late 80's / early 90's SF Henry Rollins-doppelganger Mark Sperry, who was a friend of his in that period. He offers insight and shares his admiration for Sperry. The two get into Bucky's biography, his discovery of punk rock, his move from Arkansas to California in the 80's and his near fatal struggle with drugs and alcohol during his days crashing in the punk houses of the east bay. He shares his story of recovery and the revelation of his late life diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder. He tells us how throughout his life writing stories and performing comedy and poetry has been not only an essential steam-valve release of creative self expression but also a means of finding community and a sense of belonging. He describes how inspiring it was to arrive in the bay area just as the emerging ‘spoken word' movement associated with the punk scene was flowering. Jason and Bucky also talk at length about a specific project he has undertaken to compile an oral history of beloved SF musician, the late Lance Hahn and his very prolific band J Church. Morrissey fascinates me. His music, starting with The Smiths and ending with his latest solo record - “I Am Not A Dog On A Chain” and the person himself. What is it about Morrissey that so many people love and/or love to hate? He’s lovely, controversial, talented, opinionated. The music, though, holy cow. Morrissey’s music has been a huge part of my life ever since the mid-1980’s and the purchase of “Meat Is Murder”. I can’t say how much this man’s music has meant to me over the years. However, in a strange twist of fate, “Bigmouth Strikes Again” is more than just a Smiths song, it seems to be Morrissey’s MO of the last several years. This episode focuses on the Morrissey “solo” years from 1988 up to now. We’ll be taking a fairly deep look at the records and who made them from 1988 to 2004, then a peek at the same from 2006 to the present. The very end covers “Morrissey Vs. the press”, which has been an ongoing thing since 1983 or so. Fun! The songs are by A Wilhelm Scream, The Phenomenauts and J Church and all tie into the subject at hand quite nicely.

And as an artist, has created six books of his comic series, "Snakepit", the latest of which is titled "SnakePit Gets Old". He also does a column in Razorcake. I first met Ben years ago when he lived in Richmond, and had much fun catching up with him over the phone from his home in Austin, Tx.
