A teacher who “pulled a sickie” to attend a stag do in Portugal, lied about illness, and later ripped pages from his passport to cover his tracks has avoided a teaching ban - but should he have? This week on Points of View, we ask what this case says about trust, professionalism and pressure in teaching. We'll also debate flexible working in education. Should schools be more open to flexible leave and personal requests to help retain staff and improve wellbeing? Or are schools already under too much pressure, with staffing shortages making flexibility difficult and unfair on colleagues left to cover? On the panel: Dave Brown, Rae Whitehouse, Lucy Trimnell.

Join Tom Rogers and Dave Brown for a Teachers Talk Radio special with experienced teacher and author Carmel Bones discussing her new book, Clockwork Classrooms: Solutions for Smoother Running Lessons. Drawing on more than thirty years of classroom experience, Carmel shares practical, time-saving approaches designed to help lessons run more smoothly, reduce friction in the classroom, and make teaching more sustainable. The conversation explores how small changes to routines, interactions and classroom systems can have a major impact on behaviour, workload and learning culture. From simplifying classroom practice to reconnecting educational research with day-to-day teaching reality, this show will unpack the strategies behind “clockwork classrooms” and ask what genuinely helps lessons flow effectively in 2026's challenging school environment.
At Connaught School for Girls in Waltham Forest, frustrated students are directly confronting teachers in the third week of strikes. With GCSE preparations severely disrupted, pupils are demanding the National Education Union members return to class. Teachers, protesting heavy workloads, management issues, potential redundancies and pay cuts, have been seen turning away or standing with keffiyehs and Palestine flags. Parents are bitterly divided - some backing the teachers' fight for better conditions, others furious that their daughters' futures are being sacrificed. Is this a necessary stand for workers' rights, or are students paying the price for adult disputes at the worst possible time? On the panel: Tom Rogers, Dave Brown and Lucy Trimnell.

Paul Christopher, head of global investment strategy for the Wells Fargo Investment Institute says that a short conflict in Iran remains his base case, noting that the war has been proceeding at a slightly faster pace than he might have expected. Facing a limited but intense war with economic consequences, Christopher suggested investors should rebalance a portfolio more than make moves designed to try to take advantage of short swings caused by the conflict. If the Iran War lasts more than a few months or pushes oil prices past $150 per barrel, Christopher says that could change the game and create a deeper, lingering downturn. MarketWatch columnist Brett Arends discusses the thinking behind his recent column on why he doesn't expect oil prices to top $150 per barrel. Dave Brown, chief executive officer at Hays Staffing discusses the firm's 2026 Salary & Hiring Trends Report, which talked about how disruptive artificial intelligence has become for the job market. The annual study showed that A.I. is changing not only the way employers are hiring but the way workers are applying for jobs, and why that doesn't necessarily improve conditions for either side. Plus, Chuck answers a listener's question about his side gig as a lacrosse referee, and about finding the right side job in general.

Send us feedback or episode suggestions. In the first episode of Patterns, Chris Strahl sits down with Dave Brown, design leader at Qualtrics, to explore what modern systems thinking looks like in an AI-driven product landscape. Moving beyond traditional notions of software design, the conversation reframes product creation as a shift from a single golden path toward a world where every experience is effectively an edge case. Together, they unpack why context, not features, is becoming the primary design material and how AI is forcing teams to rethink how systems are structured, constrained, and evolved.Drawing on his experience leading AI and ML initiatives at AWS and now at Qualtrics, Dave explores how designers and builders can shape better outcomes by designing for context, learning loops, and adaptability. The discussion spans designing for AI versus designing with AI, the rise of compound engineering, and the collapse of rigid boundaries between design, product, and engineering. Rather than shipping static features, the future points toward systems that learn continuously, respond in real time, and improve through every interaction.Key takeawaysContext is the core design challenge of 2026, shaping how AI systems behave, adapt, and deliver value.Product systems are moving from golden paths to infinite edge cases, driven by personalization and real-time decision making.Designing for AI means creating learning loops, where systems improve through continuous feedback rather than static rules.Compound engineering reframes software creation around systems that get smarter over time, collapsing traditional role boundaries.View the transcript of this episode.Check out our upcoming events. If you want to get in touch with the show, ask some questions, or tell us what you think, send us a message over on LinkedIn.GuestDave Brown is a design leader at Qualtrics, where he focuses on AI initiatives and the evolution of the company's design system. It's Observer Hall of Fame season, and you know what that means: With Kris having to take the week off, David figured this would be a good week of a HOF show, so he's joined here by our dear friend John Pollock of POST Wrestling to go over the ballot! The focus is on new/returning candidates and our ballot shortlists for the most part to keep our sanity, but there's a ton of ground covered, with topics including:David's new research into the Von Erichs and how it affects their candidacy as a group.Decoding the criteria as it applies to teams vs. singles acts. The underrepresentation of historically marginalized groups in the HOF.Junkyard Dog getting unfairly made out to be a far inferior candidate than he actually is in a lot of HOF discussions.Sabu's case coming into focus in the aftermath of his death. What's the threshold for high level in-ring longevity candidates like the Briscoes, Masaaki Mochizuki, and Meiko Satomura?Between last year's inductions of CIMA and Shingo Takagi and this year's addition of Mochizuki to the ballot, is it time to put a lot more focus on Dragongate candidates, whether individually or as groups? Is Becky Lynch's candidacy losing stream?Did CM Punk deliberately sabotage AEW, and if so, how does that reflect on his otherwise strong case for induction? The Randy Orton problem: Right now, it's easy to make the case for why he's a weak candidate. Will voters lost sight of that years down the line?Batista needing reconsideration under the current rule set when he's a far superior candidate to almost everyone else on the modern U.S./Canada ballot.Did Cody Rhodes' pec injury rob him of the credit he deserves for being the catalyst for the 2020s WWE boom period?Aew we overvaluing in-ring work when it comes to candidates like Tiger Jeet Singh?Trying to figure out the areas where the WON HOF should be more like the Rock 'n' Roll HOF than sports halls of fame, including whether or not feuds should be considered as much of an “act” as tag teams are since it's all a work. The problem with candidates like Zane Bresloff and Rossy Ogawa where we're largely relying on a friend or two to make the case for them. The glut of candidates like Morris Sigel, Bobby Bruns, and Roy Welch that arguably shouldn't be up to a vote in the first place. The rise of “non-standard” candidates like Jim Johnson and Reggie Parks.Mike Tenay arguably having much more actual stylistic influence on the style taken up by successor announcers than Jesse Ventura did.Dave Brown being unfairly punished for being the sidekick of the GOAT, Lance Russell despite being an HOF-level announcer himself and fans in the Memphis territory tending to put them over as a team.…and much more. This episode contains mild adult language that may be offensive to some. Dave Brown, owner/operator of Dave Brown Outfitters, joins the podcast to describe the life of a professional wild bird guide. For several decades, Dave has been outfitting fly anglers and bird hunters from the Mexican border into Canada, and his perspective on the guide's life is informed by years and miles. Dave always brings a unique and considered perspective to issues of conservation, private land access, a nomadic pursuit of the seasons, and a whole lot more.
