Dan Dagget was one of the original members of EarthFirst!, one of the more radical environmental activist organizations of the last 50 years. In his efforts to achieve health for the Earth's ecosystems, however, he found himself conflicted over environmentalism's means and the ends those means actually achieved. With that in mind, he began investigating and writing about success stories where active participation by humans in the ecosystems they depended on for livelihoods made the environment healthier than if they were not there. Two of his books, "Beyond the Rangeland Conflict" and "Gardeners of Eden - Rediscovering Our Importance to Nature" have thus been influential for many of us concerned about the serious environmental problems confronting the contemporary American West. Who bombed Judy Bari? Lauren Schmitt of KMUD looks into the thirty-five year old attack on Earth First organizer Judy Bari. The 40-year-old environmentalist was severely injured by a pipe bomb when she was driving in Oakland on May 24, 1990. She died seven years later. Her colleague Darryl Cherney sustained minor injuries and has been seeking justice ever since. 

May 24th is the 35th anniversary of the bombing of Earth First!ers Judi Bari and Darryl Cherney. To commemorate we're reposting our interview from last year with Earth First!'s Karen Pickett. Here's the blurb from last year's episode:On May 24, 1990, a car bomb ripped through environmental and labor organizer Judi Bari's car nearly killing her and her comrade Darryl Cherney. Bari and Cherney were part of Earth First's Headwaters campaign and had fought long and hard to stop clear-cutting redwood forests in Northern California by ravenous timber companies. They were organizing a campaign that summer called "Redwood Summer" that had planned to do mass action against logging. The F.B.I. and the Oakland police immediately arrested Bari and Cherney as the culprits in their own bombing. Judi Bari passed away from cancer in 1997. In 2002, Bari (posthumously) and Cherney won a $4.4 million lawsuit against the F.B.I. and the Oakland PD for violating their civil rights. May 24 is now an official holiday in the city of Oakland. In our latest episode, we talk with Earth First! organizer Karen Pickett (@KP4redwoods), a close friend and comrade of Bari and Cherney, about Earth First!, the Northern California timber wars, Judi Bari's role as environmental and labor organizer, the bombing and the subsequent lawsuit. But in MOVE's lifestyle, city officials saw threats to their status quo. Their bombing of MOVE homes shocked the nation and made international news. Eleven people were killed, including five children. And the City of Brotherly Love became known as the City That Bombed Itself. Among the children most affected by the bombing was Mike Africa Jr. Born in jail following a police attack on MOVE that led to his parents' decades-long incarcerations, Mike was six years old and living with his grandmother when MOVE was bombed. In the ensuing years, Mike sought purpose in the ashes left behind. He began learning about the law as a teenager and became adept at speaking and inspiring public support with the help of other MOVE members. In 2018, at age 40, he finally succeeded in getting his parents released from prison. On a Move is one of the most unimaginable stories of injustice and resilience in recent American history. But it is not only one of tragedy. It is about coming-of-age for a young activist, the strong ties of family, and, against all odds, learning how to take indignities on the chin and to work within the very system that created them. At once a harrowing personal account and an impassioned examination of racism and police violence, On a Move testifies to the power of love and hope, in the face of astonishing wrongdoing.

The language we have for describing mental health challenges and suffering can constrict or expand the realm of possibilities for how we define ourselves. Sascha Altman DuBrul has spent his life challenging mainstream assumptions about mental health, what's normal and abnormal, and built a community around shifting the narrative. Drawing from his personal experiences of getting locked up in a psych ward, he co-founded a radical mental health support group and media project (The Icarus Project) which proliferated the language of mental health concerns as ‘Dangerous Gifts,' to be harnessed and worked with rather than obliterated and erased. On May 24, 1990, a car bomb ripped through environmental and labor organizer Judi Bari's car nearly killing her and her comrade Darryl Cherney. Bari and Cherney were part of Earth First's Headwaters campaign and had fought long and hard to stop clear-cutting redwood forests in Northern California by ravenous timber companies. They were organizing a campaign that summer called "Redwood Summer" that had planned to do mass action against logging. The F.B.I. and the Oakland police immediately arrested Bari and Cherney as the culprits in their own bombing. Judi Bari passed away from cancer in 1997. In 2002, Bari (posthumously) and Cherney won a $4.4 million lawsuit against the F.B.I. and the Oakland PD for violating their civil rights. May 24 is now an official holiday in the city of Oakland. On this week's episode of The 1 Girl Revolution Podcast, we welcome the phenomenal Shelly Denny, co-founder of Medicine Wheel Ride - a nonprofit organization that is dedicated to raising awareness and support for Murdered and Missing Indigenous Women (MMIW) and their families. Shelly lives in Arizona and is an enrolled member of the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe, which is an Anishinaabe Tribe in Northern Minnesota, also known as Ojibway or Chippewa. She is a Doctor of Oriental Medicine and works full time in Indian Country as an acupuncturist. Shelly grew up in a biker family and has been on a motorcycle since she was in the womb. In 1996, at 19 years old,  she bought her first motorcycle and hasn't let go of the throttle since. Shelly has logged over a quarter million miles on a motorcycle with numerous cross-country trips, many of which were solo rides. Shelly's activism started in her teen years and she became an organizer and volunteer in groups like Earth First, Food Not Bombs, Catholic Worker Community, and Indigenous rights groups in various peace and justice issues. After seeing the egotism and anger that can get in the way of good activist work, Shelly took a break from direct action to work on internal healing of trauma and addiction and develop healthy and productive modes of coping with obstacles and difficulties. This groundwork of healing and recovery has added a deeper level of resilience and commitment to service. Shelly believes there is great power in knowing exactly who you are and spiritual commitment that extends beyond mere faith. John Seed is a 78-year-old world-renowned Australian environmental educator, author, activist, artist and filmmaker. A recipient of the Australian government's Order of Australia medal, John is the founder and director of the Rainforest Information Centre and, since 1979, has been involved in 100s of campaigns and education initiatives that have protected remaining rainforests and helped humanity rethink our relationship with nature. John and his family first came to Australia as Jewish refugees who experienced incredible hardship and devastating loss during the Nazi occupation of Hungary. They went on to create a new life in Australia, where John's mother, Judy Cassab, went on to become one of Australia's most celebrated painters.  John also has an artistic flair, and he and his mother had an exhibition together during the final years of Judy's life. John has had a fascinating and adventurous path in life.After a short career in computing with IBM, John joined the hippy trail, travelling overland through Afghanistan and onto India, where he studied meditation before arriving back in Australia and co-founding an intentional community in Bundjalung Country,  and the Northern Rivers ‘rainbow region' of Northern NSW at Bodhi farm, which still exists to this day. It was here that John found his true calling, or it found him. As you're about to hear, at the time, outside of Indigenous culture, there was little respect or appreciation for the value of rainforests, and they were being destroyed at an alarming rate. John joined locals in blockading the site at Terania Creek and said the experience at the time was as if nature was speaking to him. The protesters succeeded, and John went on to found the Rainforest Information Centre, a pioneering global organisation that has been instrumental in rainforest protection and conversation throughout Latin America, Cambodia, India, Papua New Guinea, Australia, and the South Pacific. His work also helped initiate the creation of the US Rainforest Action Network.John has written and lectured extensively on the concept of deep ecology. With Joanna Macy, Pat Fleming and Professor Arne Naess, he wrote "Thinking Like a Mountain - Towards a Council of All Beings" which has been translated into 12 languages including Korean and Tibetan.In 1987 he co-produced a television documentary, "EARTH FIRST!" for Australian national television about the struggle for the rainforests. In 2003 he spearheaded RIC's endangered species campaign and made the film "On The Brink" with David Attenborough, David Suzuki, Olivia Newton-John and Jack Thompson. You can find that via the Rainforest Information Centre online, as well as lots of other great videos, including one of John in conversation with Ram Dass in 1992.In 2021 – after an arduous and prolonged struggle with life-threatening cancer, John got back in the saddle and jumped straight into action. Some of his campaigning at this time helped lead to Ecuador's Constitutional Court ruling that mining in the Los Cedros Protected Forest is a violation of the constitutional rights of nature and is therefore prohibited in the forest. This has created an important national and worldwide precedent.More recently, John was involved in the Rising Tide blockade of coal ships leaving the world's Largest Coal Port in Newcastle, NSW. 3000 protesters gathered, and John was one of over 100 people in Kayaks arrested as part of a collective stand against Australia's continued investment in fossil fuels.   I should add that John is also an accomplished songwriter and has produced 5 albums of environmental songs, as well as numerous other environmental films.
