In today's episode I'm speaking with Joi Lee, the Head of Editorial and an Executive Producer at Earthrise Studio. I'm sure you've heard of Earthrise – they're one of the leading media platforms reporting on climate change, launched in 2020 by Alice Aedy and Jack Harries. Over the past few years, their social media channels have become one of my go-to sources of climate related news – and I know I'm not the only one! So Joi and I spoke about how the climate crisis is being portrayed in the media, and why she thinks stories are so integral to how we communicate. She then told me about POWER, their latest series digging into the energy crisis, and how they collaborated with their community to define how they would tell that story. We also discussed the many elections coming up this year all around the world, and what you can do as an individual to ensure the fossil fuel industry loses some of its power.Want to dive deeper?Watch POWER on the Earthrise YouTube channel — https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eXUj6a59Wb4&ab_channel=EarthriseFollow Earthrise on Instagram — https://www.instagram.com/earthrise.studio/Come say hi!Joi on Instagram — https://www.instagram.com/joixleeWhy We Care on Instagram — https://www.instagram.com/whywecarepodcast/Tiphaine on Instagram — https://www.instagram.com/tiphainemarie_/If you enjoyed the episode and want to help the podcast, I would be super grateful if you could leave a little review or share it with a friend who might like it. On a trip to Greenland, Jack Harries saw a huge chunk of ice break off a glacier and crash into the sea. Already a keen film maker with an interest in travel, he knew then what he wanted to dedicate his life to - telling the stories of climate change. Years later, he's been all over the world, finding the people most affected by the climate crisis and giving them a voice in his documentary series A Seat at The Table. Join Jack now, on a warm day in London's Victoria Park, as he discusses the power of community activism, the need for storytelling and completely fluffing his lines when he met Barack Obama. NFTs are the most hyped new format the music space has seen in years – recently everyone from Grimes to Kings of Leon have got in on the act. However, traditional NFTs also have a tremendously harmful effect on the environment. But these digital collectibles don't have to. And, in a world where these digital collectibles change hands for huge sums of money, he wants NFTs to be affordable and accessible to real music fans while creating a sustainable system that financially rewards creators. "Routines help me to stay motivated and to balance the different areas of my life." Are you someone who thrives off spontaneity, or are routines the way you like to make sense of things? In this episode, Lucy chats about why routines are what works for her and how, if you are also a creature of habit, you can create routines that help you to find balance and stay sane while achieving your goals. Climate change will cause the biggest mass migration in history. Filmmakers and storytellers Jack Harries, Finn Harries, and Alice Aedy have founded creative studio earthrise to document the human stories of those on the climate front lines. They believe in progress, not perfection, and hope the stories they tell will encourage action through inspiring hope for a better future. In this chat with Fearne, the powerful trio talk through what they've learnt about managing their own mental health as activists being constantly bombarded with overwhelming and exhausting information. Welcome to this mini series on imperfect sustainability!! My aim for this series is to inspire you to view sustainability in a more positive light and to help you to genuinely make a difference in your own life. Let's tackle this with a non-judgemental, solutions-driven attitude and lift each other up rather than tearing each other down. Episode 1: how to shift your mindset to avoid guilt & perfectionism "They felt like they belonged to the land, rather than the land belonged to them." - Eckhart Tolle, A New Earth Climate change is an issue that is extremely important to me; it's one which will have a huge influence over all of our lives for the rest of our lives. If we're going to be successful in reversing climate change, we need to make changes, which in my mind, calls for a collective mindset shift. We need to get over this fear of imperfection, to build the confidence to act, to stop making ourselves and others feel guilty and to be open-minded enough to make lifestyle changes. Overcoming perfectionism and instead being open to making mistakes could really help to promote a more widespread change. Spoiler alert: no one is perfect!! --- Things mentioned in this episode: A New Earth by Eckhart Tolle (here) All The Small Things Podcast (here) Venetia La Manna (website here) Max La Manna (website here) Jack Harries (youtube here) Drawdown : The Most Comprehensive Plan Ever Proposed To Reverse Global Warming (here) --- Space to Learn on Apple Podcasts - leave a rating and a review here!! Alice Aedy is a documentary photographer, film-maker and activist. Jack Harries is a documentary film-maker and environmental activist who has built an online platform of over 5 million people raising awareness of the climate emergency. Together, Alice and Jack, are co-founders of Earthrise, a platform dedicated to empowering and galvanising the next generation of climate activists into long term, sustained action- they have both played a central role in putting the climate emergency on the news and political agenda for the first time in the UK. The challenges that humankind face as a result of the climate crisis are unprecedented. All the science states that unless we act urgently and radically to change the way we are living on Earth we will speed towards the mass extinction of life on this planet as we know it. Coming into true acceptance of the enormity of this is as existentially overwhelming as anything could possibly be and the consequence for many who do, involves the onset of a relatively newly recognised, yet very commonly experienced form of ‘grief,’ called Climate Grief: a grief for all that has already been lost on earth and the dread for the certain loss of all life on earth as we know it, if action is not taken. It is now broadly recognised that human beings are going to have to learn, both collectively and individually to manage, and tend to, this grief as a part of driving one of the most important movements for change in the history of humankind. As we hear so boldly in this episode, tending to the darkness of our feelings is an integral part of activism, it is what enables us to keep the fire of relentless hope burning bright. So if the world is feeling like a dark or difficult place, join us and let your heart be ignited by the fire of the human spirit. This is the podcast where each week we'll meet a guest who’ll help us pay attention to something we should know about, but maybe don’t. This week, we're talking about climate action; a refresher on what climate change means, the power of emotion to inspire action, and why our individual contributions matter so much. Jack Harries is a documentary filmmaker, photographer and activist. He started his YouTube channel Jacksgap to document his gap year, and alongside his twin brother Finn, built up an audience of over 4 million subscribers. Jack uses platform to raise awareness around the issues of mental health, migration and the environment. He's also the co -founder of earthrise studio, a new online community and youth-led media company dedicated to communicating the climate crisis. Type 2 is a podcast from Looking Sideways in association with Patagonia that explores the intersection between the outdoors, action sports and activism. My guest for this episode of Type 2 is Jack Harries. Jack is a film-maker and environmental activist from London. He initially came to prominence thanks to his wildly popular YouTube channel Jack’s Gap, which he started with his brother Finn and which quickly amassed four million subscribers. Such an audience gave him quite a platform and, as you might imagine, quite a few opportunities - such as the chance to head to Greenland and take part in a documentary about glacial retreat. It would prove to be a life-changing moment for Jack, who decided from that point to dedicate his life to raising awareness on climate change and attendant issues such as forced migration. He’s done so by making documentaries in environmentally compromised places like Bhutan and Kiribati, through his work as an ambassador for organisations such as the WWF and, latterly, by his very visible involvement with the Extinction Rebellion group. If anybody fulfils the premise of using their platform to create change, it’s Jack, and having been one of his 1.5 millions Instagram followers for a while, I’ve long been intrigued by his story. So with a fortnight of London-based Extinction Rebellion action in full swing, I headed up to meet him at his place in West London and find out more. I found him to be charming, impassioned, articulate and persuasive. Here's how it went down. New episodes of Type 2 will be released every four weeks through my Looking Sideways channel. Hear it by subscribing to Looking Sideways via ApplePodcasts, Spotify, Podbean, OvercastFM or any of the usual other podcast providers. Thanks to Ewan Wallace for the theme tune, and to my editor Fina Charleson.

IT'S GOOD TO BE BACK! Please subscribe, leave a review and share with your friends!Jack Harries is a filmmaker, environmentalist and WWF ambassador. He rose to fame after he launched a highly successful YouTube channel which he ran with his identical twin brother Finn, to document his Gap Year. We discuss his journey to veganism, the hypocrisy of sustainability, mental health, therapy and of course, food. I’m only sad to say that this interview was recorded just a short while before Jack was arrested for protesting with Extinction Rebellion at the International Petroleum Conference, where gas and oil tycoons gathered in their glad rags, trying to pretend that we don’t have a global catastrophe on our hands. Jack, you're a hero.“It’s difficult to talk about environmentalism without being a hypocrite. It’s almost impossible to leave the house without having some kind of negative impact on the environment - unfortunately that’s just the way it is. But I don’t think it should stop you being able to have these conversations if you’re not the most perfect environmentalist because then no one would have these conversations and nothing would change. You have to have these personal inner conflicts because it forces you to think about your own lifestyle.”Jack's Newsletter Recommendations:https://e360.yale.edu/newsletterhttps://www.theguardian.com/environment/2015/oct/19/sign-up-to-the-green-light-emailhttps://www.nytimes.com/newsletters/climate-changeFind Jack on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/jackharries/Jack's work: http://jacksonharries.com/Find Me On Instagram: https://instagram.com/venetiafalconerSign Up To My Newsletter: http://eepurl.com/gdU0U1Join The Slow Fashion Exchange: http://bit.ly/SlowFashionExchangeTickets To My LIVE PODCAST EVENT on 18th March with Laura Thomas (author of Just Eat It): http://bit.ly/2NFHxr2 See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Jack Harries, Richard Herd and Chris Howard share the golden rules of creating a successful, factual YouTube channel. Long gone are the days when YouTube was just babies, cats and people falling over. Brands, broadcasters and native YouTubers are embracing the platform like never before - resulting in a wave of high production-value, short-form, factual content aimed at a new breed of audience – active, vocal and loyal. Jack, Chris and Richard share their views on producing short-format content and gaining and engaging subscribers. They discuss how to make the best use of features such as annotations and playlisting, how to use analytics and discuss their favourite camera equipment. With a background in television production, Chris and Richard also talk about what they had to learn, or rather unlearn, in order to engage a YouTube audience. The panel highlight the importance of the YouTube community and explain how collaborations with the likes of ZeFrank, Wheezy Waiter, Tyler Oakley, Red Bull, Epic Meal Time and DanisNotonFire have been vital to establishing their channels online. Jack Harries is the creator of JacksGap. Back in 2011 he set up the channel to document his gap year for friends and family. Two years later he, along with twin brother Finn, is one of the UK's leading vloggers with over 1.9 million subscribers. His YouTube recommendations are Troye Sivan and Sorted Food. Richard Herd is the producer and channel manager of Jamie Oliver’s Food Tube, offering up in Jamie’s own words "food shows with attitude". Richard’s career credits include Gordon Ramsay’s F Word, The Naked Chef and Big Brother. His YouTube recommendations are My Virgin Kitchen and Epic Meal Time. Chris Howard is the series producer of natural history channel Earth Unplugged, BBC Worldwide’s first original content production for YouTube. Previously Chris has worked on Planet Earth Live and David Attenborough’s Flying Monsters. His YouTube recommendation is Vsauce.
