Molly Burke and Tyler Oakley joined YouTube more than a decade ago and built their respective online followings by advocating for the causes and communities of people that were important to them — even if it wasn't always the easiest way to rapidly grow given the platform's algorithm. Since then, Burke and Oakley both expanded to additional platforms, like Patreon and Twitch, to continue garnering meaningful relationships with their followers. While Burke said she's been able to learn a lot about her viewers personally through Patreon, Oakley said that two-way direct communication on Twitch has been instrumental in how he creates content in the moment. In the fourth and final episode of the Digiday Podcast's Creators series, Burke and Oakley discuss why advocacy and speaking from the heart has always been central to their strategies as long-form video content creators, and why that's helped grow their audiences and businesses.

Anthony Quintal (21) has been making Youtube videos since 2012. "Lohanthony's video of the day-ey-ey" still plays in my head when I think about his videos. He grew a massive following over the years and has always been open about his sexuality, as a proud member of the LGBTQ+ community. In the recent years he hasn't uploaded as much on his YouTube channel and slowly distanced from social media entirely. This past month he posted several videos on his YouTube channel that concerned his followers as they began to believe he had endured some form of conversion therapy. Youtubers like Tyler Oakley spoke out about the dangerous messages that could be spread after watching Anthony's videos. Anthony has since tried to clear up some of the statements made in his original video but fans believe there is still a major cause for concern here. Learn more about your ad choices. Imagine Youtube in the mid 2000s, long before Logan Paul, before Despacito and Ryan's Toy Review, before monetization and autoplay. Back then, LGBTQ voices like Joe Graceffa, Tyler Oakley, Gigi Gorgeous, and my guest today, Davey Wavey, were creating their own scene on YouTube. Now, in 2019, people watch one billion hours of videos on Youtube every day. It's the second most visited site in the world, second only to Google. And Youtube searches of "how-to" videos are growing 70% year on year. We use YouTube to learn everything. But there's another part of the internet that people regularly visit to learn how to do things they've never done before ... The world of porn. It's hard to get the exact numbers, but surveys and studies suggest that around 50% of all internet traffic is porn. And with fewer than half of US states mandating sex education, with the content mostly decided by individual school districts, and rarely if ever discussing gay sex, it's not surprising that many of us look to porn for our own DIY sex education. Today's guest experienced that and saw an opportunity to make porn better and more empowering for the queer community. Playing for Team Human today: media and technology scholar Jamie Cohen. Jamie will be helping us understand the commodity of authenticity. His work looks at the ways authenticity is quantized and codified on media platforms such as YouTube. It’s a process through which trust and connection become instrumentalized as tools for the monetization and manipulation of audience attention. Jamie warns how, coupled with powerful algorithms, the gaming of authenticity threatens serious social consequences. Jamie joins Douglas to discuss his research, including his case studies of famous YouTubers like Tyler Oakley and Casey Neistat. Minhdzuy and Omar wake up in another giant library, but something seems amiss. After naming all six human senses and all twenty-five human emotions, they realize that the library is almost exactly the same as the library they’d just seen. For some reason, this prompts them to criticize David Ayers’ direction in Suicide Squad, as well as Jared Leto’s performance as the Joker. That leads them to wonder why Peter Jackson shot an extra movie while shooting The Hobbit. Why was it so long? Why was GI Joe so underrated? And how does French Stewart keep making his way into movie sequels? Plus, are Minhdzuy and Omar related? His Grandma is Annie Oakley and Minhdzuy’s Grandpa is Tyler Oakley! After going outside, they interview one of the local people, who happens to be holding an Oscar, and it’s 2017’s Best Director, Damien Chazelle! But it doesn’t stop there! It turns out that Minhdzuy and Omar are in a universe where La La Land won the Oscar for Best Picture after a snafu with some envelopes led Suicide Squad to have been temporarily named Best Picture! And Minhdzuy makes a plea for people to stop needlessly hating Anne Hathaway. Omar reminds everyone of Natalie Portman’s stellar acting in Star Wars Episode 1, and then quickly plugs This American Life’s app, Shortcut. Jack Harries, Richard Herd and Chris Howard share the golden rules of creating a successful, factual YouTube channel. Long gone are the days when YouTube was just babies, cats and people falling over. Brands, broadcasters and native YouTubers are embracing the platform like never before - resulting in a wave of high production-value, short-form, factual content aimed at a new breed of audience – active, vocal and loyal. Jack, Chris and Richard share their views on producing short-format content and gaining and engaging subscribers. They discuss how to make the best use of features such as annotations and playlisting, how to use analytics and discuss their favourite camera equipment. With a background in television production, Chris and Richard also talk about what they had to learn, or rather unlearn, in order to engage a YouTube audience. The panel highlight the importance of the YouTube community and explain how collaborations with the likes of ZeFrank, Wheezy Waiter, Tyler Oakley, Red Bull, Epic Meal Time and DanisNotonFire have been vital to establishing their channels online. Jack Harries is the creator of JacksGap. Back in 2011 he set up the channel to document his gap year for friends and family. Two years later he, along with twin brother Finn, is one of the UK's leading vloggers with over 1.9 million subscribers. His YouTube recommendations are Troye Sivan and Sorted Food. Richard Herd is the producer and channel manager of Jamie Oliver’s Food Tube, offering up in Jamie’s own words "food shows with attitude". Richard’s career credits include Gordon Ramsay’s F Word, The Naked Chef and Big Brother. His YouTube recommendations are My Virgin Kitchen and Epic Meal Time. Chris Howard is the series producer of natural history channel Earth Unplugged, BBC Worldwide’s first original content production for YouTube. Previously Chris has worked on Planet Earth Live and David Attenborough’s Flying Monsters. His YouTube recommendation is Vsauce.
Adam's guest is Chris Erwin, Head of Operations for Big Frame. The company, which was acquired this year by DreamWorks, is often called a multichannel network, or MCN, while Chris describes Big Frame as, "a new-era entertainment company for teens and millennials.” Adam asks Chris to explain more about what MCNs and Big Frame do, especially with regard to developing and managing the careers of digital-first creators, like YouTube stars Ingrid Nilsen, Tyler Oakley and Amanda Steele. Since Earwolf and Midroll Media are digital-first media companies, as well, Adam and Chris talk about the similarities between their businesses, and how they make money for talent. Finally, they discuss what it's like to work in entertainment tech and in the Silicon Beach of Los Angeles.
