RNIB Connect Radio's Toby Davey is joined again by Vidar Hjardeng MBE, Inclusion and Diversity Consultant for ITV News across England, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Channel Islands for the next of his regular audio described theatre reviews for 2025 This week we have the return of the stage adaptation of Khaled Hosseini's best-selling novel ‘A Thousand Splendid Suns' to the Birmingham Repertory Theatre with description by Professional Audio Describer Carolyn Smith. About A Thousand Splendid Suns The Rep presents a powerful new production of A Thousand Splendid Suns, Khaled Hosseini's spiritual sequel to The Kite Runner. In 1992 in an Afghanistan ravaged by war, an orphaned Laila is left alone in an increasingly threatening world. Her older neighbour Rasheed is quick to open his home and takes Laila as his second wife. Rasheed's first wife Mariam has no choice but to accept her younger, and now pregnant, rival. As the Taliban take over, life for all of them becomes a desperate struggle against starvation, brutality and fear, and the two women find themselves unlikely allies. Former Rep and Hampstead Theatre Artistic Director Roxana Silbert returns to Birmingham to direct this unflinching, life affirming drama, in which love grows and sustains the human spirit even during the hardest of times. Musical inspiration drawn from Afghanistan's 1970s musical heritage, including works by Ahmad Zahir and Abdul Rahim Sarban There are further audio described performances of A Thousand Splendid Suns - Nottingham Theatre Royal - Thursday 22 May, 6.30pm and Saturday 24 May, 2.30pm. Leeds Playhouse - Friday 13 June, 7.30pm and Saturday 14 June, 2pm. It's Daylight Savings and we are alternately miserable and happy about it. Which is a good reflection of the books we've read this week. We love them and not! Here's what's on the agenda: - "Wild Dark Shore," by Charlotte McConaghy — if you like one of her books, you're going to like this one. Hannah's a big fan. Nevermind the sleeping with the seals. - "A Thousand Splendid Suns," by Khaled Hosseini — also, like "The Kite Runner," not a memoir. Sam was confused. Kinda miserable. Hope the U.S. doesn't wind up like this. - "Lion," by Sonya Walger — she's "Penny" from "Lost," and here she is with an autobiographical novel. The lion in question is her father, who's a crazy rich guy. - "How To Lose Your Mother," by Molly Jong-Fast — did everyone else know that Erica Jong was Molly's mom? Read this, regardless, because Molly can write like hell. - "I Heard There Was a Secret Chord," by Daniel Levitin — an exploration of music therapy and why it works. Sam was already a convert, but you should read it if you're not. - "Parable of the Sower," by Octavia Butler — after some confusion with how this dovetails with the Patternist novels (it doesn't), we come around to discussion why this novel is must-read.
The Power author Naomi Alderman, and Nigerian writer Abi Dare discuss favourite books. Naomi chooses Dear Committee Members by Julie Schumacher, a series of hilarious letters written by a beleaguered academic. Abi champions A Thousand Splendid Suns, Khaled Hosseini's tale of two women in Taliban governed Afghanistan and Harriett recommends James Baldwin's The Fire Next Time, two immensely powerful essays.Produced for BBC Audio Bristol by Sally Heaven Follow us on Instagram: agoodreadbbcPhoto credit: Annabel Moeller

Last month, the Seattle Opera hosted “Jashin: a celebration of Afghan arts," highlighting Afghan history, culture, and arts — topics that can be lost between constant news stories of war and violence. That show led to the opera's current production — the world premiere of "A Thousand Splendid Suns."
Set against Afghanistan's volatile history, A Thousand Splendid Suns tells the breathtaking story of Mariam and Laila, two Afghan women. Brought together under the brutal Taliban rule, the bond between Laila and Mariam leads to unthinkable sacrifices, and ultimately, one family's survival. Based on Khaled Hosseini's best-selling novel, this story has captured the hearts of millions including American composer Sheila Silver and librettist Stephen Kitsakos who adapted the novel for the opera stage. Host Stephen Anthony Rawson sits down to talk with Sheila Silver about her opera, its journey to the Seattle stage, and her musical studies in India with vocalist Pandit Kedar Bodas.

**Warning: This episode contains frank discussion on adult subjects like world events, and historical atrocities, as well as open political discussion. Listener discretion is advised.** Today we rope in two amazing friends of the show, Fareha and Setara, to discuss their experiences as refugees from the now former Islamic Republic of Afghanistan. First the discussion is slow and deliberate with more anthropologically themed probes into their life and culture, but our wonderful guests help transition the conversation into their thoughts and observations on the recent events regarding their native country. Also, capybaras! Also, the book mentioned by Fareha is "A Thousand Splendid Suns," by Khaled Hosseini, an Afghan novelist who similarly tells his experience as a refugee.
