Jeff Jay was sleeping under bushes in San Francisco, physically deteriorating and contemplating suicide, when his parents found him through an unlikely series of events. What started as a simple phone call became the beginning of a 40+ year recovery journey, and eventually helped create the modern intervention methods that have guided thousands of families. Highlights What Every Family Needs to Know: The gentle question that changed everything- how one father's caring words reached his son when nothing else could (and why the approach mattered more than the words themselves) Why "they have to want it" isn't the whole story- understanding how motivation and readiness actually work in recovery, plus what families can do while waiting The doctor's straightforward explanation that provided clarity- a simple framework that helped make sense of addiction as a medical condition Real success rates for family interventions- 85-90% when done thoughtfully, and what happens with the remaining 10-15% Understanding the addicted brain- why decision-making is compromised and how this knowledge can help families respond with compassion instead of frustration How families can recognize their influence- you have more impact than you might think, especially when you know how to use it constructively What "raising the bottom" means for your family- helping someone reach acceptance sooner rather than waiting for more consequences The power of "doing this together"- why recovery works better when the whole family participates, not just the person with addiction When intervention doesn't work on day one- what families can do to maintain momentum and continue the conversation Why modern treatment approaches can be confusing- navigating the difference between treating addiction and treating other conditions simultaneously The trauma and addiction connection explained- understanding when to address underlying issues and when to focus on sobriety first How structured family recovery works- supporting your loved one (and yourselves) through the crucial first year The difference between enabling and supporting- practical guidance for families learning new boundaries What to do when you feel exhausted and hopeless- finding your way back to effective action when you've been through so much Why having an ally matters- the importance of not going through this alone, and how to find the right support Practical next steps for families ready to learn more- where to start when you're ready to try a different approach This conversation offers both hope and practical guidance for families who love someone struggling with addiction. Jeff's story reminds us that even in the darkest moments, the right kind of help- offered with love and clear boundaries- can make all the difference. If you're feeling overwhelmed or unsure where to start, remember: you don't have to figure this out alone, and you don't have to solve everything at once. Q: Do interventions work?A: Yes and no. Interventions come in two categories: professional and family led. Even interventions conducted by professional interventionists may fail if the subject of the intervention refuses to “get on the plane”. Often this happens because the family has somehow failed in organising its own part, or the intervention somehow provokes anger or blaming over past events. Nonetheless, professional interventions succeed far more often (defined as the subject agreeing to get help) than do family-organised interventions.Unless the family reads the same guidelines (such as Debra and Jeff Jay's book Love First), abides by the “rules” and rehearses the intervention, their chances are less than average. A failed intervention may lead to a serious rupture in family relations, including blaming family members for their part in the “failure”, when it was quite noble to try in the first place.
In the heartwarming short documentary, Makayla's Voice: A Letter to the World, we are introduced to a remarkable young girl whose spirit and determination defy all expectations. Makayla, a black teenage girl, has spent her life grappling with a rare form of autism that rendered her essentially nonverbal. However, her parents (father, Grammy-award winning producer Needlz and business owner mother, Mañana), filled with unwavering belief in their daughter's potential, embarked on a transformative journey to discover the true depth of Makayla's inner world. Recently, through the help of Roxy Sewell, Makayla's letterboard therapist, a groundbreaking breakthrough came into their lives in the form of letter board therapy, a method that finally provided Makayla with the means to communicate. As her voice gradually emerges, the audience is invited into a world of wonder, poetry, and brilliance that was once hidden from sight. Through the lens of the documentary, we witness Makayla's courageous steps as she unveils her thoughts, feelings, and insights. With her newfound ability to express herself, she shines as an inspiring advocate for autism, determined to show the world the power and beauty of neurodiversity. Makayla's Voice: A Letter to the World is directed, written and produced by Julio Palacio, who has won several awards for his short form documentaries. The film is also produced by Sam Hanson and Sasha Levinson, editor is Jeff Jay and cinematography is by Brock Hanson. In this podcast, we discuss and assess the strengths and weaknesses of different levels of intervention. We learn that:The vast majority of families who live with an addict or alcoholic in their midst do not seek help for themselves or for their loved ones, despite having to live with the chaos and desperation that addiction imposes on a family.A family intervention, absent a professional, requires meticulous planning, teamwork, leadership, a clear understanding of roles, and air-tight execution. Not much room for error or freelancing. (Read the book Love First, authored by Debra and Jeff Jay.)Hiring a professional interventionist may be costly but could pay off in the long run. The professional is the firm, resolute voice of reason, and is unlikely to be taken in by the addict's attempt to slip through a crack in the wall. The newest form of intervention, CRAFT, which stands for Community Reinforcement and Family Training, is based on teaching the entire family to think and act in a healthier way so as to pave the way for the alcoholic to choose to recover.
*A struggling writer and atheist, Jeff Jay's battle with alcoholism led him to the brink — and finally back to the God who loves him * (0:03) The narrator tells the harrowing story of Jeff Jay's near brush with death on a rickety sailboat in the dark and stormy waters of the Atlantic Ocean. A December gale nearly destroyed his ship and left him clinging to life for seven days until he was miraculously rescued by a passing dinghy. (1:09) As the narrator explains, this wasn't Jeff's darkest hour — but it was something of a metaphor for hopelessness that had enveloped his earlier life as an alcoholic. (2:25) Jeff describes his upbringing in a Catholic family living in Grosse Pointe, and the circumstances that led to his loss of faith and eventual foray into atheism. He began drinking heavily in college, eventually dropping out and hitchhiking his way around the country. (4:56) A fan of beatniks such as Jack Keroac, Jeff traveled the country seeking to emulate their lifestyle, eventually winding up in San Francisco. Although he tried his hand at writing, Jeff's struggles with alcohol led him to bounce from odd job to odd job, as well as various health issues and a battle with depression and homelessness. When a friend committed suicide, Jeff began to seriously contemplate ending his own life. (7:22) In a stroke of divine providence, a friend of Jeff's brothers happened to be visiting San Francisco and recognized Jeff living on the streets. He tracked down Jeff's family, who arranged a phone call at the flop house where he was staying. (9:36) After a conversation with his father, Jeff found himself on a plane ticket to Flint, where he was admitted to Hurley Hospital for detox. A doctor explained Jeff's condition, and taught him about the disease known as alcoholism. (11:20) Jeff began Alcoholics Anonymous, but still wasn't convinced of the program's spiritual elements. For two years, he lived at home with his parents, afraid he would relapse. Anxious and hopeless, Jeff reached a breaking point during which he could do nothing but cry out to a God in which he didn't believe. (14:35) To Jeff's surprise, God answered. And suddenly, the 12-step program in which he found himself didn't seem so daunting. He began to rebuild his life brick by brick, with the help of others in the program. Life wasn't always easy, but with Jeff's newfound faith, it was bearable. (15:44) Now years removed from AA, Jeff looks back on that period in his life with gratitude for shaping him into the man he is today. Now, he works with other families struggling with addiction, and he's finally written his book: “Love First, A Family's Guide to Intervention.” Reporting, script and narration by Casey McCorry; production by Ron Pangborn. In this episode, we are talking with interventionist and author Jeff Jay. Jeff Jay, CIP, is a renowned clinical interventionist and addiction specialist. He has been guiding families into recovery for over 30 years. His work has appeared on CNN, PBS, the Jane Pauley Show, Forbes Online, and in many professional journals. Jeff is the co-author (with Debra Jay) of the best-selling book Love First: A Family’s Guide to Intervention. His latest book is Navigating Grace, a solo voyage of survival and redemption. He is also the co-author of At Wit’s End: What You Need to Know When a Loved One Is Diagnosed with Addiction and Mental Illness, (with Jerry Boriskin Ph.D., Hazelden). He heads a national private practice that provides intervention and recovery mentoring services. In this episode, Jeff shares the journey of his own addiction, recovery, and how he became an interventionist. We are talking about the dynamics of what it means to bring love and concern to somebody in order to help and encourage them to get well. Jeff also shares the importance of handling tough situations with love. Show Notes: [00:41] We are excited to welcome interventionist and author Jeff Jay. [01:22] Jeff is a clinical interventionist and works with families all over the country. [01:43] Jeff got into this industry because of his own addiction and recovery as a young man. Jeff shares his story. [03:09] After he had been sober for five years, he decided he wanted to do something different and he got his first full-time job as a counselor in a rehabilitation center. [05:11] When they started Love First, intervention was not a household word and the methods were ill-formed. [05:45] The more we understand addiction as a disease and not just somebody being bad, the more that the approach makes sense because it is all about dealing with people with a sense of dignity and respect. [06:06] We really want to call people back to their authentic selves and reach for the heart. [06:32] Addiction is a very different disease because there is a lot of complexity to it. [08:07] If we have to wait until they want help, what is going to make them want it? [08:34] If they refuse help, then we need to make sure we are not doing anything that makes it worse like lending money. [10:30] There is a specific methodology that they have developed over the years that is more likely to break through to the authentic self of the addictive person and get them to the point of willingness. [12:33] Families go on a trip to the bottom with the alcoholic too. [12:46] We are not only calling the addictive person back to their authentic self, but we’re also bringing the family back to their own integrity and their own core beliefs. [13:48] No one thinks they’re going to go on this journey. [14:26] There are some situations where some separation may be necessary, but it is always done with love. [15:21] The brain is hijacked by alcoholism. [17:16] We all make mistakes and we can move on from here. [18:05] Recovery is a team sport. How are we going to get organized as a family? [20:16] Jeff is a very technically minded person and built their website. “Intervention to Durable Recovery: The Power of Family” was presented on April 16, 2019, by Debra Jay (with the first section of the audio presented by Jeff Jay in a previous presentation on November 21, 2017.) Addiction is often described as a “family condition” – but families have often been left out of the recovery equation. Involved, supportive families play a critical role in the recovery process, from initiation through long-term recovery, and families provide an important reservoir of influence and support towards making lasting sobriety a reality. Through extensive work in intervention and family recovery, Debra Jay and Jeff Jay have developed highly effective, detailed Intervention and Structured Family Recovery™ processes that unlock the secrets of lasting sobriety – techniques that help addicted physicians and pilots attain lasting recovery - and make them available to families. The intervention process starts with a concerned family and the Structured Family Recovery™ process ends with a family recovery team that maximizes the potential for a successful outcome for all involved. This presentation will describe how to do an intervention and how to build a recovery team that unites the person with addiction and his/her family in working towards the common goal of sustained recovery. The presentation will provide practical, helpful, hopeful information about intervention and family recovery that will both revolutionize recovery and bring recovery back to its roots. This program is part of the Dawn Farm Education Series, a FREE, annual education series developed to provide accurate, helpful, hopeful, practical, current information about substance use disorders, recovery, family and related issues. The Education Series is organized by Dawn Farm, a non-profit community of programs providing a continuum of substance use disorder treatment and recovery support services. Jeff Jay and Debra Jay provide an introduction and overview of the Intervention Workshop. How can we come together as a family to help our addicted loved one get treatment? How can we avoid catastrophic consequences and raise the bottom to right now? Planning and preparation are critical. There is little chance for success without training, rehearsal, and a detailed plan. There are many details to consider.
Jeff Jay discusses the dynamics of enabling. Here he defines "innocent enabling," which happens when the family thinks there loved one is just going through a phase, and will grow out of their problem. Then he talks about "desperate enabling," when the family finally realizes their loved one has a disease, and they are desperately trying to avoid greater consequences. He then discusses the process by which families awaken to what they really need to do.
A guide to writing letters for an intervention, based on the book "Love First," by Jeff Jay and Debra Jay. Seven point process for writing intervention letters. Interventions should not be done off-handedly, with people making up what they want to say on the spot. Letters provide structure, and allow us to make sure that we have covered all the critical points.
Jeff Jay joins us as a special guest as we discuss the Bryce Harper signing, Yankees injuries in Spring Training, NBA and NCAA basketball talk, and we determine what our March Madness bracket will be.

Guest: Jeff Jay, author and interventionist Today’s guest is Jeff Jay, interventionist and co-author of the best-selling book Love First: A Family’s Guide to Intervention. He sat down with me at the Moments of Change conference in Florida to discuss how he and his wife Debra created a step-by-step method to guide families through the intervention process, with or without a professional interventionist. He also shares why keeping love as the centerpiece of this interaction helps families reach past the addicted mind and connect with their loved one’s heart. Intervention to Durable Recovery: The Power of Family was presented on November 21, 2017, by Debra Jay and Jeff Jay; best-selling authors, speakers, trainers and counselors. Addiction is often described as a “family condition” – but families have often been left out of the recovery equation. This presentation describes how to do an intervention and how to build a recovery team that unites the person with addiction and his/her family in working towards the common goal of sustained recovery, and provides practical, helpful, hopeful information about intervention and family recovery that will both revolutionize recovery and bring recovery back to its roots. This presentation is part of the Dawn Farm Education Series, a free, annual education series developed to provide accurate, helpful, hopeful, practical, current information about chemical dependency, recovery, family and related issues. The Education Series is organized by Dawn Farm, a non-profit community of programs providing a continuum of substance use disorder treatment and recovery support services. For information, please see http://www.dawnfarm.org/programs/education-series. About the presenters - Debra Jay and Jeff Jay: Debra and Jeff Jay are best-selling authors, speakers and clinicians. Their best-selling book "Love First: A Family’s Guide to Intervention" has helped thousands of families to help their loved one initiate recovery, and Debra’s new book “It Takes A Family” is helping families come together to form a recovery team that maximizes the potential for a successful outcome for all involved. Jeff's recent book, “Navigating Grace," recounts a gripping journey through perilous ocean waters and through his own soul to finding hope and serenity. Jeff and Debra have a national private practice that provides clinical services and training, including Intervention and Structured Family Recovery.
