Losing a child is an unimaginable pain that no parent should have to endure. For Darryl Rodgers, founder of The Family Recovery Coach, this heartache became a catalyst for transformation. Darryl's life shifted dramatically after the tragic loss of his son, Chase, who died in a marijuana-impaired car accident at the tender age of 20. In this heartfelt episode, Darryl shares his deeply personal journey, offering invaluable insights into the world of addiction and the significant role that empathy and understanding play in family recovery. As we explore the challenging terrain of addiction, particularly among young adults, Darryl emphasizes the importance of early, open communication and a non-judgmental approach. Parents often struggle with how to react to their child's substance use, and harsh reactions can sometimes do more harm than good. By understanding the underlying traumas that often drive addiction, families can foster a supportive environment where healing is possible. Darryl's reflections on his own experiences provide a sobering yet hopeful perspective on the delicate balance of guiding a child through their darkest moments. Grief, in all its forms, is a recurring theme in our conversation. Darryl discusses anticipatory grief and the heart-wrenching loss of the child he once knew, offering a poignant look at how addiction transforms individuals and families alike. Yet, through his grief, Darryl found purpose—turning his pain into a mission to help others. His work, including his book, short film, and coaching services, is dedicated to supporting families in similar situations. Darryl's website, thefamilyrecoverycoach.com, offers resources and a free 30-minute strategy session for parents embarking on their recovery journey. This imbalance not only strains family dynamics but also has broader implications for society. We also delve into the open-air fentanyl market in the Pacific Northwest, exploring the complex challenges of decriminalizing substances without a robust treatment infrastructure in place. From there, we touch on presidential debate and frustrations with current leadership, emphasizing the need for a more focused approach to the addiction crisis. We even highlight a notable leader who successfully incorporates the 12 steps into his daily life, providing a refreshing perspective on leadership and recovery.Lastly, we confront the heartbreaking issue of overdose deaths and the vital role families play in preventing these tragedies. You can access the Spotlight Diagram here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/b72k1yskohwnp9v/Screenshot%20%28253%29.png?dl=0 Jeff discusses the different roles that family members play during the stress and chaos of navigating addiction, including what he calls the "blamer", the "helper", the "avoider", the "distracter", the 'distancer", and the "object of focus". Jeff shares why family members take on these roles, what that looks like, as well as what these individuals can do to move towards healthier interaction. Jeff's diagram and explanation of these roles can really help individuals better understand how they themselves have developed coping skills that may either be helping or hurting the situation, and how you can get really curious about your own behavior. Jeff believes that whole family healing must take place in order to give the person suffering from addiction their best shot at abstinence and recovery. Jeff is an amazing resource for families looking to develop their tool box of healthy coping skills so they can best support their loved ones. CW/TW: Episode includes discussion of substance use and death by accidental fentanyl overdose. Heather Ross is a mother who was willing to do whatever it took to have a healthy relationship with her daughter who struggled with Substance Use Disorder.  She is a Family Recovery Coach who is CRAFT trained, Invitation to Change Certified, and hosts the popular podcast Living With Your Child's Addiction. Supporting her daughter taught her to focus on their similarities instead of their differences, be present as a mother, and love her daughter unconditionally for the 21 short years she had on this earth. After her daughter lost her life to a fentanyl overdose, Heather became even more dedicated to helping families heal.  She helps her clients create peace of mind, space for change, and loving connections in their families.    When Heather is not helping other parents she enjoys spending time in nature with her dogs, going to sound baths on the beach, traveling, and creating beautiful memories with friends and family.  Connect with Heather: The Living With Your Child's Addiction podcast: https://heatherrosscoaching.com/podcast-2/ Website https://heatherrosscoaching.com/ Free Invitation to Change Support group (it's in progress but you can join at any time): https://heatherrosscoaching.com/invitation-to-change-group/ Instagram https://www.instagram.com/heatherrosscoaching/ Facebook https://www.facebook.com/heatherrosscoaching Free Guide https://heatherrosscoaching.com/perspective-about-enabling/  ____________________________ The Beyond the Shadow of Doubt™ podcast is a proud member of the Dialogue Podcast Network found at DialogueJournal.com/podcasts. We are Back! Dr. Kristine has not been feeling well and is dealing with a very challenging time at work. Kris has been starting the new baseball little league season with Masons first big event. Then we are joined by Darryl Rodgers. He is a speaker, author, and family recovery coach living in Cary, North Carolina. As a family recovery coach, he specializes in working with parents of children struggling with a substance use disorder. Darryl also serves on the state advisory board of NC Mothers Against Drunk Driving. At the age of 19, Darryl began a career as a corporate pilot. He served as a medic in the Army National Guard and became a Copilot/Gunner on the AH-64 Apache attack helicopter. Darryl and his wife, Kim have been married for thirty-one years. They are the proud parents of two boys, Justin and Chase. My oldest of two boys, Chase, attended college on a football scholarship. He dropped out in the second semester of his freshman year after developing a drug addiction. When I first learned of Chase's drug habit, I didn't know anything about substance use disorders, and I panicked. I made a lot of parenting mistakes. Through an intervention, we were able to get Chase into treatment, but I didn't realize the proper role of the family in the recovery process. In some ways I was enabling Chase and doing things that may have contributed to his eventual relapse. I worried about Chase constantly, but it seemed as though my efforts to help him only made matters worse. Chase returned home from treatment and was doing well with his recovery at first, but months later, he relapsed and in 2014 at the age of 20, Chase died in a drug-impaired wreck. Chase was a passenger in the front seat of his own car. The 18-year-old driver took her own life 7 months later. After Chase died, I immersed myself in learning everything I could about substance use disorders. (drug & alcohol addiction). I wrote a book about Chase's life. I began doing drug prevention speaking. I read books about addiction, attended seminars, and watched videos. I volunteered to facilitate a peer support group for parents with children struggling with a substance use disorder. There is no cure for a substance use disorder, but I have discovered steps parents can take to give their child the best opportunity at recovery. https://www.thefamilyrecoverycoach.com/ https://www.facebook.com/darryl.rodgers1 https://www.linkedin.com/in/darryl-rodgers-352a8a46/ https://www.instagram.com/drodgers61/ https://twitter.com/jdrodgers61 https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCD2UuvY2-OyujPBga3SzVig https://www.tiktok.com/@thefamilyrecoverycoach ***** The Kris and Kristine Show ***** http://www.krisandkristineshow.com https://www.kristinesmithdesigns.com K2 RADIO: https://live365.com/station/K2-RADIO-a04551 Email: krisandkristinepodcast@gmail.com Voice Mail: https://www.speakpipe.com/KrisandKristineShow Twitter: https://twitter.com/k2showsandiego Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thek2showsandiego/?hl=en Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/k2showsandiego Patreon: www.patreon.com/thekrisandkristineshow

I am so excited to introduce you to Heather and Zoe. Since I had the extraordinary opportunity to participate in the Hazelden Betty Ford Children's Program in October 2017, I have dreamed about giving voice to a program graduate.Today is that day!! Zoe, her brother, and her parents participated in the program when Zoe was 7 1/2 years old.Today begins a three-part conversation with Heather and Zoe sharing the multi-generational disease of addiction in their family. I find it fascinating to hear how different the experience and perception of the disease can be for each family member, and all are valid. Please share this podcast with anyone with children and grandchildren who could benefit. I know there are fears about sharing, exposing, and teaching our children. I believe hearing from Zoe and Heather can help lessen the concern.Education and validation of what children intuitively experience are empowering for them. Please find the link to the Hazelden Betty Ford Childrens Program below:https://www.hazeldenbettyford.org/treatment/family-children/childrens-program

Episode 24 Insights Into Family Recovery Watch Now https://youtu.be/iahDg8V6SJM Listen Now Episode 24 A very special guest, Lisa Smith, opens up about her enlightenment towards becoming a Certified Family Recovery Coach, and how she is now helping families fight addiction together. Topics: Lisa opens up about why she shifted into a completely new career, helping those families struggling with addiction. Lisa compares the two different approaches she has experienced while walking through having a son who was in active addiction; the one before learning how to manage this hard situation, and one after. How she overcame the fear Lisa gives her insight into connection, relationships, and kindness and how these concepts are intertwined with recovery. Lisa explains the Family Recovery curriculum she has developed Select Quotes You've got to be able to separate the behavior from the person. It requires you to not take the behavior personally when the behavior starts to happen that you wish didn't happen. This concept really helps to get to a place where you aren't being led by fear. It's not something that is easy, and it certainly isn't something that comes naturally as a parent, but allowing them to walk their path and establishing the connection, communication, and kindness helps the family to get to a place where the individual understands your intentions.Lisa Smith, BA, MME, CCARCertified Family Recovery Coach Episode Transcripts Episode 24 Transcripthello and welcome to another episode of finding peaks i'm jason friesma chief clinical officer of peaks recovery to my left chris burns president and founder of peaks recovery hello and to my right uh very special guest lisa smith uh family peer recovery coach or peer family recovery i never know which order to put those words in but um lisa's uh joined us uh lisa i met with you i don't know a few months ago you came to our office and said i'm doing this thing and you got to check it out and um and i was immediately struck by your passion and your uh desire to help families of people who are struggling with recovery and i was i was wondering if you'd be willing to kind of talk about well a where that passion comes from let's start there right well i'm a mom of a son who is in recovery but has struggled for several years with substance use disorder and so i have walked a difficult path in with our family and and the disease of addiction affecting everybody in our family so that's kind of and where i started on this journey of working with other families yeah can i ask the following question that okay cool um and then how i i feel like you become the person that you needed during that journey maybe and and could you talk to that a little bit yeah i did so my son struggled for several years went through several treatment programs and was successful in the treatment programs and we would go to family weekends and we went to several that were really great and you know we felt hopeful and like we had our son back and in looking back at the time i was unable to identify this but in looking back you know we would see growth and progress from him and we were in the same place and we had not necessarily changed anything because we didn't necessarily think we needed to change anything and you know he was the one who was using substances and we had a healthy family and this was his thing sothe last straw was the day i call it the day i went from seeing it black and white to seeing in color because i actually believe that that's what happened i was surviving my life and my son was in active addiction he was living in our home things were not going well and he walked out of our house one day and i turned around and saidi'm not gonna sink on the ship and two things happened one was i had to take a hard look at myself and kind of save myself and do some hard work and the second piece of that was all of the information t...

Oh, this could get interesting! I had my wife, Sarah, on the podcast. Anytime I think about having her on as a guest, I get nervous. She brings a TON of value, helps a lot of people and many identify with her... but oh do I worry that we are going to get into a fight, lol! We are both on a recovery path, love personal development, and self-reflection, but we often come at it from totally different angles. When squeezed, I have a tendency to defend, push back and rebel... and our relationship is no different. We bicker, I wind her up, we debate (maybe just "I" debate!) and our home can be a landmine of character defects. It's also quite possible that the landmines are allll mine! On the other hand, there is also a lot of peace, recovery, spirituality, and growth in our home. Sometimes, she's leading the way, and sometimes it's me. I could not be happier with where we are in life at the moment. Yet, the insidious thing about my dis-ease, which is rooted in self-centeredness, insecurity, and fear is, at any given moment, I can't see that. I can't see through my own BS. Then, out comes my blame cannon... and its pointing directly at her... the woman I asked God for when I had 6 months clean. She showed up four and a half years later and we almost didn't make it. On this episode, we talk about how we met, Sarah's journey to accepting that I was an addict... for real. We talk about the excitement of a new relationship, meeting the parents for the first time, being on the verge of breaking up a year and a half in, my letter to God about the perfect partner, couples counseling, Sarah finding her own recovery path in Alanon family groups. There is a lot more we cover, I just can't remember. And the good thing is, my fear of getting into a fight on-air, sounding like a self-righteous, incompassionate d**k... IT WAS ALLLLLL IN MY HEAD!

“My goal is to lift them up with the strength of their actions even if their actions haven’t always been productive.”-Dr. Robert Weiss   We do anything and everything for the people that we love. Sometimes we fall into crisis dealing with our own relationship problems but we fall even deeper into that crisis by people who ridicule the things we do for love. Dr. Robert Weiss became open in such a field by overcoming the troubled seasons of his life. At present, his expertise is spread as a psychotherapist, sexologist and international educator. As the CEO of Seeking Integrity LLC, he is also reaching out virtually to create communities for many troubled people whose voices are covered by fear mongering.   This interview does not only shift our view from what’s wrong in our society but also what’s wrong with the way we deal with our own remorse. A lot of concepts are contrasted which gave rise to a new model that will lead us away from the path of trauma to the path of love. Learn more about how this model is built and why it is necessary in this digital age.   Change is good! Want to know what’s new in Family Recovery and Solutions? “The family is core for everything.”-Pam Feinberg-Rivkin Being a nurse by profession and having to serve in many areas of the medical field such as dialysis, homecare and case management, Pam Feinberg is an eyewitness of how addiction is gradually injected from vials of trauma and drug prescriptions to people of varying age and backgrounds. Her own experience with a family member who battled with addiction fuelled up her desire to help others through an approach that is deviant from the common rehabilitation method. In this episode, we also learn that true healing comes from a much broader and deeper sense. Here, Pam talks about factors leading to drug abuse and alcohol addiction as well as the significant role that each family member has on the period of and surrounding period of the recovery. This is not just a common story of journey to sobriety but also a reality of how “addiction in the family can be turned into an opportunity for the whole family to change.” Get the show notes, transcription and resources mentioned at http://thefamilyrecoverysolution.com/   Highlights: 01:58 Getting a Glimpse of the CEO 08:57 The Generational Pattern of Drug and Alcohol Addiction 17:01 Help for Opposing Family Origins 26:12 Getting the Right Attitude 33:01 Outside Individualized Plans-The Holistic Approach

We took a unique break from our traditional format. Instead of having a guest on this podcast, we opted to ask our parent listeners to provide issues and struggles for host, Dave Cooke, to reflect on. The response was tremendous. Thank you! From your submissions, we selected five questions that best reflected the general tone of all your questions. Today's podcast focuses on the following topical areas: 1. Dealing with a child who is not ready to embrace recovery; yet is at tremendous risk if they don't. 2. The challenges of finding effective recovery programs for our children. 3. Inspiring a child to get on with their life, post recovery. 4. Responding to societal related issues of family, friends, relatives -judgement, scorn, ignorance - who just don't understand the roller coaster pain of a parent's addiction journey. 5. Handling family divides, especially between siblings, that result from everyone's respective addiction related experiences. Thank you to the parents who submitted questions. We will do this again.  My son has offered to participate in our next Q&A session to bring someone with personal addiction experience and perspective into the conversation. Next week (January 8) we will resume our series of guest interviews.  In the meantime, enjoy and many blessings to you and your families through this holiday season and into 2015!

Family Recovery and the “Mother Bear”   As a parent, you want to fix the things that break. If the car breaks, you fix it. If the dishwasher breaks, you fix it. If a leg is broken, you fix it. But when a family member experiences emotional or mental distress, how do you “fix” that? And is it fixable?. When a serious mental health problem occurs, parents need to have the tools to know how to respond in a productive way. Parents need to learn to accept that they may not be able to “fix” the problem, but with the right tools parents can become good supporters and assistants to the family member who's healing, and to themselves. Join Dr. Russell Hyken and his guest Lisbeth Riis Cooper as they discuss how a child's mental health issue impacts the family system and what parents can do to support their child when issues occur.   Lisbeth found her inner Mother Bear when her family faced mental health challenges. After struggling for many years to find compassionate and effective support for her daughter, she decided to create a community where her daughter and many others could heal and recover.
