In this powerful episode, I am joined by three amazing guests—Kayla Solomon, licensed clinical social worker, along with Allies in Recovery family members Carolyn and Kenneth. Carolyn and Kenny outline their journey with their son's addiction, which included a suicide attempt, overdoses, developing an eating disorder, and their discovery of Allies In Recovery. Carolyn and Kenny share how Allies has been a major lifeline for them during their son's battle and now 14 months of sobriety. Karla adds in her clinical knowledge and expertise as a group facilitator for family members. All three guests share about the CRAFT method that Allies teaches family members, which stands for Community Reinforcement and Family Training. The CRAFT method is an evidence-based method taught as an eLearning program, along with live, weekly training and support groups. The guests emphasize the importance of community for loved ones of those who struggle with addiction along with how invaluable the toolbox CRAFT teaches loved ones and family members. Kenny and Carolyn discuss how they had to change the way they were relating to their family member, and how critical that has been for their own well-being as well as their relationship with their son. Heather explores the complex topic of manipulation in the context of addiction and family dynamics. When your child is using substances, it's common to experience behaviors that feel manipulative or self-serving. However, Heather emphasizes the importance of stepping back to see these actions through a compassionate lens, which can empower parents to respond with clarity rather than react out of frustration or hurt. Heather covers: Understanding Manipulation: What manipulation is and isn't, and how labeling behaviors as manipulative can reduce loved ones to harmful stereotypes. Influence vs. Desperation: How to distinguish when behaviors stem from true manipulation versus desperation or an attempt to meet a basic need. A Compassionate Perspective: Shifting from a “victim-perpetrator” mindset to a more empowered approach, recognizing manipulation as a universal human behavior rather than one solely tied to addiction. Strategies for Intentional Responses: Tips for responding thoughtfully, using the CRAFT approach (Community Reinforcement and Family Training). With insights drawn from her own experiences, Heather shares the importance of language, self-awareness, and finding less charged ways to label challenging behaviors. This episode is a must-listen for anyone looking to navigate difficult behaviors with compassion and maintain peace of mind in the face of addiction. Send us a Text Message. Are you a parent worried about whether or not you'll see your daughter alive again due to her addiction? You'll experience two very different versions of what it's like when you ask a professional for help for your loved one with addiction.First, you will learn what the addiction treatment industry will say you must do, without knowing a thing about your daughter.  You'll experience the impact of the judgment and blame the industry greets you with when asking for help. It doesn't have to be that way.   Later, you'll learn another more practical approach, the CRAFT (Community Reinforcement and Family Training) approach. CRAFT embraces the fact that there's no one-size-fits-all approach to recovery. You'll learn how it feels to be welcomed with the CRAFT Approach, which relies upon: • Understanding and Kindness: Responding with empathy to the underlying addiction issues. • Unconditional Love: Providing consistent support to help your daughter feel loved. • Active Involvement: Engaging actively in the recovery process, learning effective communication, motivation, and boundary-setting techniques. You MUST keep looking until you find support that gives you hope, optimism, and progress. Together, we can make a difference in the lives of those we love. Sign up for the newsletter today at https://familyaddictioncoach.com/.

ABOUT THE EPISODE:The behavioral symptoms of young people caught up in substance misuse can be disheartening: open hostility, lying, cheating, stealing from family, and others. These symptoms can be hard to view as a result of the substances, and parents may instead blame their child for being “bad.” My guest today, Dr. Jennifer Fernandez, is a proponent of a compassionate model that sounds more complex than it is - the "biopsychosocial model." This model aims to contextualize all factors contributing to someone's reliance on substances - not just genetics. She says this type of analysis can help those who love someone struggling with substances understand behavior that would otherwise seem irrational. And when we know more, it leaves room for the empathy we need to parent young people who can appear out of control. Dr. Fernandez is a doctor of clinical psychology and the founder and Clinical Director of the California Center for Change. She's an expert in CRAFT (Community Reinforcement and Family Training), motivational Interviewing, and harm reduction, a concept many parents struggle with. She oversees psychotherapy and support groups founded on nonjudgmental principles. In today's wide-ranging episode, Jennifer and I discuss whether harm reduction is really just enabling, the power of motivational interviewing, what we can learn from a person's “drug of choice”, and the importance of parents presenting a unified front.EPISODE RESOURCES:California Center for Change websiteThis podcast is part of a nonprofit called Hopestream CommunityLearn about The Stream, our private online community for momsLearn about The Woods, our private online community for dadsFind us on Instagram: @hopestreamcommunityDownload a free e-book, Worried Sick: A Compassionate Guide For Parents When Your Teen or Young Adult Child Misuses Drugs and AlcoholHopestream Community is a registered 501(c)3 nonprofit organization and an Amazon Associate. This podcast episode is a conversation with Heather Ross, host of the popular Living With Your Child's Addiction podcast, trained in CRAFT, and certified  ITC parent coach. We discuss how CRAFT (community reinforcement and family training) and Invitation to Change models support your loved one (and yourself) struggling with substance use disorder. The CRAFT (Community Reinforcement and Family Training) program is a non-confrontational, evidence-based intervention for helping families affected by addiction. It helps individuals develop effective strategies for helping a loved one struggling with substance use disorder seek treatment and cope. The invitation to Change program is based on an approach by the Center for Motivation and Change that combines the evidence-based protocol of Community Reinforcement And Family Training (CRAFT) with Motivational Interviewing (MI) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). Invitation to Change provides perspectives and skills to help you encourage your loved one toward recovery while increasing your own well-being.   About Heather: Heather Ross is a mother willing to do whatever it took to have a healthy relationship with her daughter, who struggled with Substance Use Disorder. In this podcast, we discuss and assess the strengths and weaknesses of different levels of intervention. We learn that:The vast majority of families who live with an addict or alcoholic in their midst do not seek help for themselves or for their loved ones, despite having to live with the chaos and desperation that addiction imposes on a family.A family intervention, absent a professional, requires meticulous planning, teamwork, leadership, a clear understanding of roles, and air-tight execution. Not much room for error or freelancing. (Read the book Love First, authored by Debra and Jeff Jay.)Hiring a professional interventionist may be costly but could pay off in the long run. The professional is the firm, resolute voice of reason, and is unlikely to be taken in by the addict's attempt to slip through a crack in the wall. The newest form of intervention, CRAFT, which stands for Community Reinforcement and Family Training, is based on teaching the entire family to think and act in a healthier way so as to pave the way for the alcoholic to choose to recover.

Joey doesn't know how CRAFT or coaching works, but he knows how it feels to him. That's a beautiful testament to how much impact and influence you can have as a parent. Some of the main topics discussed: How taking the focus off your child and putting it on yourself impacts your family's experience of your child's addiction. It's important to redefine parenting when your child is struggling with addiction - what worked before will no longer work. Connection is the goal instead of sobriety. My name is Brittany and I am an advocate, volunteer and a Family Recovery Coach for families who have loved ones with a substance use disorder. I live with my partner who is a person who is actively seeking treatment for an alcohol use disorder. I am a trained facilitator for a family support group called Invitation to change based on the book Beyond Addiction how science and kindness help people change. It's a program that uses science and evidence based research to help family members help their loved ones who may have an addiction, it is an alternative approach to the traditional al anon program. This program allows families to help a person with an addiction and supports both families and their loved ones. It steers clear of using such labels as a codependent and an enabler. This is a great stigma that families face who have a loved one with an addiction. My goal is to educate our communities in this new approach and help break that stigma that families and their loved ones face. People do recover and families can help. https://helpingfamilieshelp.com https://cmcffc.org CRAFT (Community Reinforcement and Family Training) http://johnlehr.com

Taking care of our relationships is a crucial way we take care of ourselves and the wider world. Some of the most common questions I get in my clinical practice and from listeners are questions about how to navigate relationships in addiction and recovery: couples, parents and kids, or otherwise. So I wanted to have a clinically focused episode about this important issue, and it was my great pleasure to talk with my good friend and wise colleague, Dr. Bevin Campbell, a psychotherapist who focuses on relationships, addiction, and recovery.Bevin has particular expertise in and passion for working with couples, but as you'll hear, we cover issues that are important for all human relationships, in families, at work, and beyond. We discuss the tricky distinction between seeing addiction as “caused” by relationship problems versus stepping back and getting perspective on the bigger cycles--i.e., situating the addiction as part of a system. We explore other, everyday addictions and how they affect relationships, such as compulsive internet use, working, gaming, or otherwise. She gives some extremely useful tips about anger and avoidance, grief and trauma, and power and coercion. And we reflect on that vexing question that, for better or for worse, so many people have in these situations: “how do I get my loved one to change?”Bevin Campbell, Psy.D., is a psychologist interested in all things related to love and attachment, from the challenges of staying emotionally connected to a partner to the pain of grief and loss. She sees couples in her Brooklyn-based practice, and is also a consultant to New York City agencies and community based organizations on understanding grief and loss and supporting bereaved community members. In addition to her clinical and consulting work she supervises and teaches psychologists in training. Follow her on Twitter or see her clinical website here.In this episode:- Attachment: An Essential Guide for Science-Based Practice (partially free online)- There is a "sweet spot" for maternal responsiveness, and responding perfectly to our child's needs isn't best for optimal development: “Maternal responsiveness and sensitivity reconsidered: Some is more” - CRAFT (Community Reinforcement and Family Training) therapy, developed by Robert Meyers - ...which draws on the Community Reinforcement Approach- Salvador Mnuchin- Michael Zentman- Beatrice Beebe- Donald Winnicott- A good article in The Atlantic about several of these topics. Sign up for my newsletter and immediately receive my free guide to the many pathways to recovery, as well as regular updates on new interviews, material, and other writings.

Deuteronomy 6:7-9, 20-25 – “You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates. . . . When your son asks you in time to come, ‘What is the meaning of the testimonies and the statutes and the rules that the LORD our God has commanded you?’ then you shall say to your son, ‘We were Pharaoh's slaves in Egypt. And the LORD brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand. And the LORD showed signs and wonders, great and grievous, against Egypt and against Pharaoh and all his household, before our eyes. And he brought us out from there, that he might bring us in and give us the land that he swore to give to our fathers. And the LORD commanded us to do all these statutes, to fear the LORD our God, for our good always, that he might preserve us alive, as we are this day. And it will be righteousness for us, if we are careful to do all this commandment before the LORD our God, as he has commanded us.’” 1. The Principle of Teaching (vv. 7-9) Deuteronomy 32:41 – “I sharpen my flashing sword.” Isaiah 5:28 – “Their arrows are sharp, their bows are bent, and their horses’ hooves seem like flint.” Parents are responsible to teach their children about God Teaching implies heart knowledge, not just head knowledge Conversations should include the question “what does the Bible say?” Hebrews 4:12 – “The word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and spirit, joints and marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.” John 6:63 – “Jesus said, ‘These words I speak to you are spirit and they are life.’” Isaiah 28:10 – “For it is precept upon precept, precept upon precept, line upon line, line upon line, here a little, there a little.” 1 Thessalonians 2:8, 13 – “We, being affectionately desirous of you, were ready to share with you not only the Gospel of God but also our own selves, because you were very dear to us. . . . And we also thank God that when you received the word of God, which you heard from us, you received it not as the word of men, but as what it really is, the word of God.” 2. The Principle of Story (vv. 20-23) Deuteronomy 4:32-35 – “Ask from one end of heaven to the other, whether such a great thing as this has ever happened or was ever heard of. Did any people ever hear the voice of a god speaking out of the midst of the fire, as you have heard? Or has any god ever attempted to go and take a nation for himself from the midst of another nation, by trials, by signs, by wonders, and by war, by a mighty hand and an outstretched arm, and by great deeds of terror, all of which the LORD your God did for you in Egypt before your eyes? To you it was shown, that you might know that the LORD is God; there is no other besides him. 3. The Principle of Decision (vv. 24-25) Deuteronomy 30:15-19 – “See, I have set before you today life and good, death and evil. If you obey the commandments of the LORD your God that I command you today, by loving the LORD your God, by walking in his ways, and by keeping his commandments and his statutes and his rules, then you shall live and multiply, and the LORD your God will bless you in the land that you are entering to take possession of it. But if your heart turns away, and you will not hear, but are drawn away to worship other gods and serve them, I declare to you today, that you shall surely perish. You shall not live long in the land that you are going over the Jordan to enter and possess. I call heaven and earth to witness against you today, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and curse. Therefore, choose life, that you and your offspring may live.”

Addiction is a family disease and family members of people with addiction need help, too. Research shows that helping family members helps their loved one who has an addiction. We look at an approach that is more effective than an intervention or Al-anon to get family members into addiction treatment. It’s called CRAFT, or Community Reinforcement and Family Training. STORY: A book group turns into a support group for parents of addicted children. They turned away from "tough love" and, without knowing it, stumbled on evidence-based ways to help addicted family members access treatment. Also, we have an update on the chronic pain patient at the mini boot camp for pain, Kimberly. We check up with her a month after the program ended.

This week-long (actually, longer) event is aimed at improving the training level of Scouters throughout Scouts Canada's Northern Lights and Chinook councils, though it is well-attended by people from outside the boundaries of these councils as well. In this episode, Ken is joined by Dave Betts (Deputy Council Commissioner for Volunteer Support in Northern Lights Council) and Josee Francis (Marketing and Communications Coordinator for the Western Training Committee) to discuss FTE — what its aim is, why it's a fantastic experience, what Scouters and Scouting youth can get out of the experience, and what the theme for this year's FTE is. Now that city planners have given thumbs down to a new 40-storey building, it's worth asking what we want with our downtown? Don't we want high density and lots of people? Isn't that what we've been hearing for a long time now? And if another signature building came along that everyone loved, would we have to turn it down because of precedent? Guest: Jason Farr, Ward 2 Councillor-Where are our inspiring politicians? Most of those we'll be voting on federally and provincially don't exactly move the needle for people. They'll be voting because they have to choose one rather than because they love their choices. But surely there are leaders out there that could make that happen.-Meghan Markle has quite a lot to learn before she can become a member of the British royal family. Your mind will probably go to which utensils to use at the dinner table or how to curtsy properly but what about hostage situations and live fire exercises? In case everything goes wrong, what does the British SAS teach a royal-to-be?-Could Adolph Hitler have actually survived the war and fled to South America? The lead investigator on History Channel's show Hunting Hitler -- and former CIA operative -- believes so. Tonight he'll explain why. Guest: Bob Baer, former CIA operative and host of Hunting Hitler on the History Channel

As friends and family, our intimate connection should make us natural allies. However, we often don’t know how to talk with each other or work together when it comes to the emotionally intense issue of addiction.  SMART believes that Family & Friends deserve high-quality, compassionate and optimistic support of their own. We know it is possible to get sober. We believe loved ones can help, without becoming codependent, resorting to tough love or enabling. The tools of SMART and CRAFT work beautifully to encourage healthy, productive efforts towards an improved quality of life for all. Dr. Robert Meyers has pioneered the study of how families can help support those with addiction and is a creator of CRAFT – Community Reinforcement and Family Training, a scientifically validated and widely acclaimed approach. He is currently director of Robert J. Meyers, Ph.D., & Associates. Dr. Jeffrey Foote has over 25 years of extensive, well-recognized clinical research and is Founder and Director of the Center for Motivation and Change (CMC).
