Do you ever get hung up on perfection, black and white thinking, and the feeling that you must choose between all and nothing? That’s the kind of thing that today’s guest deals with on a regular basis. Listen in to Jessica Seeley Jennings to find out about her work with wellpower and accepting yourself. Jessica is the wife of Jeff Jennings, of Relationship Remastery. You can hear his interview in an earlier episode. In today’s episode of One Year No Beer, Jessica discusses some of the things that she’s learned in over 20 years of working with mental health disorders, eating disorders, and couples therapy. She’s also a certified alcohol and drug rehab counselor. “I think we as human beings get stuck in polarizing opposites. We feel we have to be perfect and push and push ourselves to unrealistic extremes.” Jessica talks about the common all or nothing attitudes that she hears about in counseling and therapeutic settings. She discusses how people can let go of that way of thinking and find a balance that’s healthier and more sustainable. Jessica also talks about communication and its importance. Chris, Kristine, and Jessica all agree that loneliness is a common problem, especially for people in certain stages of the OYNB process who have difficulty making connections with others. Jessica explains why people in our society have difficulty with connection and what they can do about it. Listen in to the episode to hear what Jessica has to say about the power of wellpower vs. willpower, and why it can be important to accept what is and learn to reach for your goals in a different way. Jessica gives examples of her work and what people can do to help themselves when they’re struggling, as well as sharing how listeners can reach her. One Year No Beer is all about changing your relationship with alcohol. But when you do that, you might find yourself dealing with changes in your other relationships as well. How do you maintain a relationship with a friend when the foundation of that relationship is meeting up for drinks – and you’ve stopped drinking? What about your romantic relationships? Is your relationship with a spouse or partner doomed if you stop drinking and they don’t? What’s the best way to get your partner to support you? Is it fair to ask them to stop drinking just because you do? Relationship struggles are a commonly discussed problem in the One Year No Beer forums. In today’s episode of the ONYB podcast, you’ll hear from Jeff Jennings, a clinical psychologist who specializes in educating and coaching individuals and couples as they work on connecting and maintaining relationships. “Be firm in your commitment, and if you are committing to an alcohol-free life, you want to communicate that commitment to people.” In today’s interview, Jeff talks about several different aspects of relationship issues that a person might encounter when they give up drinking. Jeff discusses both spouse or partner relationships as well as relationships with friends and others. He explains the importance of clear communication and how to address issues that are likely to arise during your alcohol-free journey. Jeff Jennings is with Missouri S & T, and is a former middle school teacher turned instructional designer. In Episode 6 of the show, Jeff and I talk about learning experience design and working with faculty in the mapping of a course plan. Jeff earned his MS degree in educational leadership through an online program at the institution that is now called Trident University. He did his graduate work while still serving in the military in the US Army. We talk about building blocks of course design and he walks through a tool that the course design team at Missouri S & T uses for helping faculty design their instruction. We touch on the importance of updated course descriptions and how to map learning events to assessments in a course and to the learning outcomes. Missouri S & T is focused on getting courses aligned with the building blocks we discuss in this episode. Jeff and I met when he was leading a workshop at the 2016 OLC Accelerate Conference with his colleague Amy Skyles, who has also been a guest on Online Course Connections (see Episode 5). Note that the podcast has been rebranded to Agile Digital Business. The tool that Jeff and Amy presented in the workshop at OLC is the Building Blocks blueprint. Jeff elaborated on the use of the tool.
