Almost everyone can look at the education landscape in America today and see that something has gone very, very wrong. Spending per student has increased, and there is no evidence that this increased spending has improved student performance outcomes. But what if there are factors eating up the budget and keeping the student performance outcomes stagnant? Factors such as the rise of teachers unions in non-right-to-work states, for example?Joining us today is Corey DeAngelis, a school choice evangelist who is a senior fellow at the American Culture Project, to discuss a recently released report he helped author that looks at just that, the administrative bloat in the public school system and how it correlates to increased teacher union influence. Also joining is CRC colleague Mike Watson, our regular host and resident labor union expert. Corey A. DeAngelis is a senior fellow at the American Culture Project. He has been labeled the “school choice evangelist” and called “the most effective school choice advocate since Milton Friedman.” He is a regular on Fox News and frequently appears in The Wall Street Journal. I sat down with Victor Owen Schwartz back in February 2022, and this episode originally aired on my birthday, June 30, 2022. In light of recent developments in the international wine trade, I thought this would be a great time to revisit this episode and reintroduce you to the man who fellow podcast Alum Lyle Fass has described as a true “Mensch."Victor Schwartz, founder of VOS Selections, a small family-run wine importing company in New York, became the unlikely face of legal resistance against Trump's sweeping global tariffs. Schwartz runs the business alongside his daughter, Chloe, and imports wine, sake, and spirits from small-batch producers in countries such as France, Lebanon, and Japan. The Challenge: When Trump announced unprecedented global tariffs on almost all US trading partners, Schwartz described them as an "existential threat" to his small business. Unlike large corporations, small importers like VOS couldn't absorb the financial impact of sudden tariff increases. The Legal Battle: Schwartz partnered with the Liberty Justice Center, a libertarian advocacy group, and agreed to serve as the lead plaintiff in a lawsuit challenging Trump's authority to impose the tariffs. The lawsuit was filed on behalf of VOS and four other small businesses. VOS Selections: How a small, family-run wine company hit back against Donald Trump's tariffs | CNN BusinessThe Victory: A three-judge panel at the US Court of International Trade struck down Trump's sweeping global tariffs, finding that Trump overstepped his authority by invoking emergency economic powers to impose tariffs on China, Canada, Mexico, and other US trading partners. Schwartz was cooking a pasta dinner when he received the winning news from his lawyers. The Ongoing Fight: The Trump administration immediately appealed the ruling, and the case could end up in the Supreme Court. An appeals court granted the Trump administration's request to pause the lower court's ruling, meaning the legal battle continues. Schwartz's case represents a David-and-Goliath story where a small wine importer successfully challenged presidential trade policy, with implications for businesses and consumers worldwide.A huge thank you to Victor O. This Day in Legal History: Trump Guilty on All CountsOn this day in legal history, May 30, 2024, President Donald J. Trump was convicted on all 34 felony counts in a criminal trial related to a hush money scheme during the 2016 presidential campaign. The case centered on falsified business records used to conceal payments made to adult film actress Stormy Daniels, intended to silence her allegations of an affair in the run-up to the election. The charges—each tied to entries in the Trump Organization's internal ledger—were elevated to felonies on the basis that they were committed in furtherance of another crime, namely influencing the outcome of a federal election. The trial, held in New York State Supreme Court, marked an unprecedented legal moment in U.S. history: a former president, and presumptive candidate in the upcoming election, being found guilty of criminal conduct. Prosecutors argued that Trump orchestrated the payments to suppress damaging information and maintain his electoral chances, while his defense claimed the case was politically motivated and the records reflected routine legal expenses. The conviction did not bar Trump from running for office again, but it did raise serious constitutional, electoral, and logistical questions about the rule of law and the separation of powers. The verdict was reached by a jury of 12 New Yorkers after weeks of testimony from former aides, prosecutors, and key witnesses like Michael Cohen, Trump's onetime fixer.Trump's sentencing was scheduled for a future date, and appeals were expected. Reactions across the political spectrum were predictably polarized, with critics calling it accountability at last, while supporters denounced the trial as a miscarriage of justice. Legal scholars noted the symbolic weight of the decision in reaffirming that no one—including a former president—is above the law.The U.S. Department of Justice and several states are wrapping up a major antitrust case against Google, with closing arguments scheduled for Friday. At issue is whether Google must sell its Chrome browser and stop default search engine deals with companies like Apple and wireless carriers, which the DOJ says stifles competition. These proposals follow a prior court finding that Google unlawfully monopolized online search and advertising markets.Judge Amit Mehta, who is presiding over the case, expects to issue a ruling by August. The DOJ is also pushing for Google to share its search data, which could benefit AI companies. OpenAI has expressed interest in purchasing Chrome if a divestiture occurs and noted that access to Google's search data would improve its AI responses.Google argues that the DOJ's proposed remedies overreach and would unfairly advantage competitors. The company has already taken some steps, such as loosening default search engine deals with phone manufacturers like Samsung. However, the government wants a full ban on payments that secure Google's search dominance on devices.Google and DOJ to make final push in US search antitrust case | ReutersA federal appeals court has temporarily reinstated President Trump's wide-ranging tariffs after a lower trade court ruled they exceeded presidential authority. The stay, issued by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, allows the tariffs—targeting imports from most trading partners and specifically Canada, Mexico, and China—to remain in effect while the appeals process unfolds. The plaintiffs and the government must submit legal arguments by early June. The U.S. Court of International Trade previously found that Trump misused the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA), which is designed for national emergencies, not trade disputes. The panel emphasized that Congress, not the president, holds constitutional power to impose tariffs. Trump and his administration remain defiant, vowing to pursue alternative legal pathways if needed. Trump criticized the ruling publicly, warning it would weaken presidential power and harm national interests.Financial markets responded cautiously, factoring in the likelihood of a drawn-out legal process. Some companies, like small businesses represented by the Liberty Justice Center, argue the tariffs threaten their survival due to disrupted supply chains. Broader economic impacts include $34 billion in losses and stalled negotiations with key partners. Notably, separate national security-based tariffs on steel, aluminum, and cars remain unaffected.Trump's tariffs to remain in effect after appeals court grants stay | ReutersTrump's latest tax-and-spending bill, dubbed the "One Big Beautiful Bill Act," includes a provision that could significantly limit federal courts' power to enforce contempt orders against the government. The measure, buried in the 1,100-page bill, would block courts from enforcing contempt if plaintiffs did not post a monetary bond when seeking an injunction—a practice rarely required in lawsuits against the government. The provision applies retroactively and would affect both lower courts and the Supreme Court. Critics say it could effectively prevent courts from holding government officials accountable for ignoring judicial orders, as most past injunctions didn't involve posted bonds. While the administration says the measure is aimed at deterring frivolous lawsuits, legal experts warn it undermines judicial authority and incentivizes noncompliance. This change comes after a Trump administration memo encouraged agencies to request bonds in litigation. Judges have previously flagged possible defiance of court orders by administration officials but have stopped short of issuing contempt rulings. In one recent case over tariffs, a judge set a bond at just $100, overruling a higher request by the government. The House narrowly passed the bill without any Democratic support. It now moves to the Senate, where some Republicans have expressed intentions to amend it. A group of House Democrats has already called for the contempt provision to be removed, arguing it would render courts ineffective in enforcing lawful orders.Trump's sweeping tax-cut bill includes provision to weaken court powers | ReutersThe U.S. Justice Department has asked a judge to dismiss the criminal fraud charge against Boeing tied to two deadly 737 MAX crashes that killed 346 people, following a new agreement with the company. Under the deal, Boeing avoids a felony conviction but will pay an additional $444.5 million into a victims' compensation fund and a $243.6 million fine, bringing the total to $1.1 billion. The sum includes investments in safety, compliance, and quality enhancements. This resolution has drawn strong criticism from families of crash victims and some lawmakers, who argue that Boeing should face trial. While most families have settled civil lawsuits and received billions in compensation, several legal representatives are planning to challenge the agreement. The Justice Department defended the deal, stating it ensures accountability and public benefit while avoiding a potentially uncertain trial outcome. As part of the agreement, Boeing's board must meet with victims' families, and the company will hire a compliance consultant instead of facing court-appointed oversight. The deal halts a planned June 23 trial over Boeing's alleged deception of U.S. regulators regarding a key flight control system implicated in the crashes.US asks judge to dismiss Boeing 737 MAX criminal fraud case | ReutersThis week's closing theme brings us to one of the towering figures of Classical music: Joseph Haydn. Born in 1732 and known as the “Father of the Symphony” and “Father of the String Quartet,” Haydn's influence shaped the musical landscape of his time and set the foundation for generations of composers to come, including his younger contemporaries Mozart and Beethoven. Though widely celebrated for his symphonic and chamber works, Haydn also made remarkable contributions to keyboard music—works that showcase both his wit and structural innovation. Our selection is the first movement, Vivace, from his Keyboard Concerto in D major, Hob. XVIII:11, arguably his most famous and frequently performed keyboard concerto. Composed in the mid-1770s, the piece bursts with energy and clarity, reflecting Haydn's mature style. The Vivace movement is bright, spirited, and rhythmically engaging, with a dialogue between soloist and orchestra that feels playful yet assured. What makes this concerto particularly special is its balance of accessibility and sophistication. The melodies are immediately appealing, but the musical craftsmanship runs deep—complex harmonic turns, sparkling ornamentation, and a joyful momentum that never wanes. In the Classical tradition, this was written for the harpsichord or fortepiano, but it's often performed on modern piano today, bringing a different resonance and brilliance to the sound. As we close the week, Haydn's Vivace offers a fitting send-off: lively, inventive, and rooted in a composer who, even two centuries later, continues to surprise and delight.Without further ado, Joseph Haydn's Vivace – Keyboard Concerto in D Major. Good morning everyone, it's May 2nd, 2025, and the legal saga surrounding former President Donald Trump continues to unfold at a dizzying pace.In just eleven days, we'll see a major collision of two significant elements in Trump's legal battles. The Court of International Trade is scheduled to hear oral arguments on May 13th in one of the growing number of lawsuits challenging Trump's sweeping tariff policies. These cases make compelling legal arguments that the tariffs lack proper authorization under the International Economic Emergency Powers Act, which Trump has been using as justification. The Liberty Justice Center has filed a motion for a nationwide injunction to halt these tariffs, representing V.O.S. Selections and four other small businesses who claim the tariffs threaten their very existence. But here's where it gets interesting – just two days after that, on May 15th, the Supreme Court will consider whether to limit judges' authority to issue such nationwide injunctions. The Court will hear arguments about the Trump administration's appeal to overturn injunctions blocking Trump's executive order on birthright citizenship.Looking at recent developments, we've seen significant movement in several other Trump cases. On January 10th of this year, Justice Merchan sentenced Trump to unconditional discharge following his conviction on 34 felony counts of falsifying business records in Manhattan. In the classified documents case, Judge Aileen Cannon dismissed the federal indictment against Trump last July, ruling that Special Counsel Jack Smith was improperly appointed and funded. Smith appealed to the 11th Circuit, but the Justice Department dropped the appeal against Trump in November and against his co-defendants in January.Just last month, on April 7th, the Supreme Court issued a per curiam decision in Trump v. J.G.G., a case involving the detention and removal of Venezuelan nationals believed to be members of Tren de Aragua. And yesterday, May 1st, we saw a Texas federal court rule against the Trump administration on the Alien Enemies Act in the case of JAV v. Trump, brought by the ACLU of Texas. The legal calendar remains packed with various appeals. Mark Meadows has petitioned the Supreme Court following the 11th Circuit's dismissal of his attempt to move his Georgia criminal case to federal court. Meanwhile, defendants in the New York civil fraud case have filed appeals against Justice Engoron's decisions, and several defendants are appealing Judge McAfee's order regarding their motions to disqualify District Attorney Fani Willis. As these cases continue to wind through the courts, the implications for both Trump personally and broader executive power in America remain profound and far-reaching.

(The Center Square) – A nonprofit public-interest litigation firm filed a lawsuit Monday alleging President Donald Trump's "Liberation Day" tariffs require congressional approval. The Liberty Justice Center, based in Texas, challenged the administration's reciprocal tariffs, which Trump announced on April 2 and suspended on April 9, hours after they went into effect. The Liberty Justice Center filing argues that the administration has no authority to issue across-the-board worldwide tariffs without congressional approval. The nonprofits lawsuit alleges Trump has broadly overstepped his authority by claiming "the authority to unilaterally levy tariffs on goods imported from any and every country in the world, at any rate, calculated via any methodology – or mere caprice – immediately, with no notice, or public comment, or phase-in, or delay in implementation, despite massive economic impacts that are likely to do severe damage to the global economy."Support this podcast: https://secure.anedot.com/franklin-news-foundation/ce052532-b1e4-41c4-945c-d7ce2f52c38a?source_code=xxxxxxFull story: https://www.thecentersquare.com/national/article_e9db5f3b-3417-4d53-981e-08253316dbcb.html

They're the ones that we should be worried about. When they're the arbiters of what can be said and they're picking and choosing what people can hear that makes it less likely for the truth to get out. Of course when you have any monopolist on speech you're going to get things tilted in favor of things that serve the interest of that arbiter of truth and you get further away from the truth. Free Speech doesn't guarantee that the best ideas will win, but at least it ensures that they can get out there so that they have a chance of prevailing and you don't have that if the government is picking and choosing what people can hear. - Jacob Huebert, author of Libertarianism Today Jacob Huebert serves as the president of the Liberty Justice Center. It was during that time that Mark courageously took on one of the most powerful political forces in the country: the public employee unions as the lead plaintiff in Janus v. AFSCME. Mark fought for his First Amendment rights – and the rights of more than 5 million other government workers – all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court. Mark's bravery resulted in the single greatest victory for First Amendment rights in a generation. Over the years Mark had a career in both the private sector and in government. Having previously served in Illinois state government in the 1980s, it was when he returned to the state in 2007 that he learned Illinois politicians had granted AFSCME — a politically powerful government union — the power to exclusively represent more than 90 percent of state workers in Illinois. This type of injustice went on for decades all across the country and affected millions of public workers. That is, until Mark stood up and fought to stop it. Now, Mark serves as a leader spreading the message of worker freedom through his personal story. Welcome back to Season Two of the School to Homeschool podcast! We kick off with an incredibly insightful conversation with Dr. Corey DeAngelis, a leading advocate for school choice and a familiar face from Fox News. Corey shares his extensive background in education policy and research, revealing the long-term benefits of school choice, including crime reduction. He also discusses his personal educational journey, including his experience at a magnet school in San Antonio, Texas, and critiques the flawed system of assigning schools based on residential addresses. As Corey anticipates the birth of his first child, his passion for educational freedom becomes even more urgent and personal. This episode also explores the shifting education landscape due to the pandemic, highlighting the rise of homeschooling, private schools, and charter schools as families push back against indoctrination and curriculum misalignments. We examine the increasing tension between parents and school boards, the controversial actions of the National School Boards Association, and the FBI's response to parental protests. Corey passionately argues for the importance of treating parents as partners in their children's education and the benefits of reallocating education funding to better suit individual student needs. We then address the future of school choice, focusing on the rise of homeschooling and alternative education models during COVID-19, and the significant impact of Education Savings Accounts (ESAs). Corey discusses the opposition from teachers' unions and the potential implications of widespread school choice adoption, including increased government regulation on homeschooling. We conclude by emphasizing the power of parental pushback, the importance of parental control in education, and the transformative potential of school choice to foster educational freedom and quality. Listen in to hear about the Parent Revolution and how it continues to inspire and empower families in their educational journeys. In this episode of "Sara Gonzales Unfiltered," Sara is joined by Leah McGee and her attorney Dean McGee, an educational freedom attorney from Liberty Justice Center. They discuss Leah's son Christian, who was suspended from Central Davidson High School for asking if the term "alien" referred to a space alien or illegal alien. The school's administration labeled him a racist, resulting in a suspension and barring him from a crucial track meet. Leah and Dean highlight their lawsuit against the Davidson Board of Education and new evidence of board members spreading false allegations about Christian and his mother. The show delves into the Supreme Court decision in Garland v. Cargill, ruling the federal ban on bump stocks unlawful. Sara criticizes the Left's attempts to limit gun rights, citing the court's decision as a victory for the Second Amendment. Justice Sonia Sotomayor's dissenting opinion is discussed, including the opinion's departure from Congress' definition of a machine gun. Sara and her panel discuss President Joe Biden's comments at the G7 summit, where he criticized Republicans for holding up Ukraine funding and promised more financial support. They express concerns about Biden's priorities and the long-term impact on American resources and security. The episode also highlights the Credit Card Competition Act, addressing the risks of Chinese payment networks infiltrating the U.S. financial system. Sara urges viewers to contact their senators to support this legislation. The episode concludes with a lighthearted moment featuring Donald Trump on Logan Paul's podcast, discussing Trump's influence and popularity among younger generations. Sara is joined by BlazeTV contributors Jaco Booyens and John Doyle.   Today's Sponsor:   Flying Ace Spirits Go to https://www.FlyingAceSpirits.com and use promo code UNFILTERED to get free shipping on every order. This question then led to a confrontation with another student, and the matter was consequently escalated to the assistant principal, who determined he had been “offensive and disrespectful” towards his Hispanic classmates, leading to his suspension.   The term “illegal alien” is the correct term used to refer to foreign citizens who have entered the U.S. illegally.
