There's always lots going on when Gary and Mark get together. We got to sample some homegrown syrup produced by Dan Cameron made from sorghum. It's a perfect way to celebrate fall. Gary whippeed up some of his homemade buttermilk biscuits and that got him talking. The main part of this episode is the retelling of just some of the adventures Gary and Steve Blizzard had in 1974 when they paddled 379 miles down the Ohio River and up the Kentucky River to Harrodsburg. They were helping the City of Harrodsburg celebrate the 200th anniversary of the founding of the town (Fort Harrod) by Col James Harrord in 1774. The Gary & Mark Show was pleased to welcome Bev MacDowell as our guest for this episode. Bev, from Asheville, has a lot going on. She still teaches "cursive" to new students at Carolina Day School where she has worked for over twenty years. And that's just for starters. At the age where most people are retired, Bev is just hitting her stride. She is a professional hiking guide with the Blue Ridge Hiking Company in Asheville. If that's not enough, she also works with "search and rescue" to help locate and bring home lost hikers, backpackers, and others. To top that off, Bev is a member of and serves as an occasional leader for Carolina Mountain Club hikes. Bev talks about all of that and more with Gary and Mark. And if you go back far enough (and we did) she mentions that she was once a model in Europe. We can believe it. We got off to a rocky start...first forgot to turn on the camera, then got the camera rolling and forgot to turn on the audio recorder, then got both rolling and the camera battery died. We had a wonderful time with our guest Scott Reed out on the tower at Camp Mondamin on Lake Summit. Scott, Gary, and Mark all met in the early 70s at the camp. It was only appropriate that the first face-to-face recording of the podcast in months happened within view of Rabbit Island resort. We did follow reasonable guidelines for keeping ourselves a safe distance apart.   Scott, from Tupelo, MS (the birthplace of Elvis) is  quite an accomplished musician. And a highlight of this episode is the musical portion. Scott is a part (a BIG part) of the band, Two Drink Minimum . Scott and Gary teamed up for several selections. Gary is an accomplished harmonica virtuoso. Mark stayed appropriately in the background during this portion.   Scott is a man of many talents. He's a top-rated and much sought-after financial advisor with the firm, HardyReed. (www.hardyreed.com). And in fact, he's the author of a best-selling book, Top 40 Rules of Investing. Almost the entire faculty and administration of the Gary and Mark Podcasting University spent a pleasant half day in a team building trek to Drip Falls. Originally the activity was to take place at the luxurious Rabbit Island Resort, but after much thought and deliberation it was determined that a faculty retreat in a spa-like setting would send the wrong message to our student(s) and their parents. After a grueling two miles in which we had to walk both ways, with much discussion we reflected upon the waterfall we'd seen and how much gravity has to do with just about everything we do. Just like the water, we're all headed downhill. For us the big treat was lunch at Green River Barbecue in Saluda where we were surprised to learn that Wednesday is FREE DESSERT DAY! We decided to record this episode at the special place where we met 49 years ago this summer. So, without asking permission, the duo assembled their gear on the tower that has stood as a symbol of Camp Mondamin for going on 99 years. Some of the episode is about camp but in their usual rambling style…Gary and Mark have a lot else on their minds. Gary has a new idea for an item to patent to help old folks and Mark has a scheme involving raising money for orphans (namely Gary and Mark). Luckily the podcast now has official legal counsel and they might just need it. And listeners should note that we were within a five-minute canoe ride to Rabbit Island, home of Rabbit Island Resort – one of our major sponsors. Then Gary brings up a certain magazine and an ad inside that's sure to turn heads and get tongues wagging down on the corner with the old geezers (and young ones) in Watershed. As always, they had a bunch of things on their minds. But before they got too far in their thoughts a visitor walked over to see what the duo was up to. And when that happens, we see the opportunity for a guest. Of course, we're taking a gamble, but this was a lucky day as Captain Jim Lombardo was a willing participant in our show and fun to chat with. He runs a sportfishing charter boat company out of South Florida and we learned a bit about that. And then we made our first phone call on our recording gear to check in with an old friend up in Maryland. Chris is newly moved into an assisted living facility and we wanted to see how that's going. We mentioned that he might want to move down to Watershed and try out the brand-new assisted living facility that's opening soon down our way. The new place in Watershed is called “Trails End” and we're sure we'll do some future shows from there once people start moving in. Thanks for a great first season. Clemson's Dabo Swinney should be scared! The Gary & Mark Podcasting University now has an athletic program. We have caved to pressure. We thought we could get by with just focusing on academics at our institution of higher learning. But we misread the demands of our alumni and current student body. They want an athletic program. Of course we can't please everybody but decided that perhaps we should enter the world of big-time college sports. So meet Don Silleman, our newly appointed Director of Athletics (AD for short)s. We offered a pretty impressive compensation package to lure Don to our campus. He couldn't resist and took early retirement from his old job in Greenville to come on board. You'll meet Don in this episode and hear some of his early plans for our athletic program. And of course one of those will be to start a football program right out of the gate. And we are not talking about playing any rinky-dink junior college or even youth league. Don wants us to aim high so we plan to start by offering to play Clemson in Death Valley as soon as they have a slot open. Gary and I weren't so sure about this until Don mentioned we could make some good money for the school win or lose. Of course we don't plan to lose… There are lots of good things ahead for the Gary & Mark Podcasting University. About this time twenty years ago Chuck Hearon was finishing up his thru-hike on the Appalachian Trail. Gary and Mark chat with Chuck about his backpacking journey of close to 2,200 miles in 1999. Two decades later he remembers it like he just walked off the trail. Most people only dream about such an adventure and those who actually start the journey call it quits a few hundred miles in. Chuck is one of those who made it! Only a small percentage ever complete the entire trail. Just in case you're not all that familiar with the AT, the “long trail” starts at Springer Mountain, Georgia and ends at Mt. Katahdin, Maine – or you can hike north to south. It crosses 14 states in its journey and passes through multiple national forests, national parks, state parks, etc. Chuck can tell you it's a mentally and physically challenging undertaking. Today Chuck lives in Saluda, NC where most of our podcasts are recorded. Chuck is very active in the local community and even twenty years after his AT hike he's still hiking and is a volunteer trail maintainer for FENCE, a nature center in Tryon, NC.
