Fullbright made a name for themselves with 2013's Gone Home, leading many to anticipate their next project. 2017's Tacoma, however, seems to have come and gone without much fanfare. It is a fairly simple game that may not reach the emotional peaks of Gone Home, but Tacoma is a very good game in its own right. And then, due to director Steve Gaynor's workplace behavior during the development of Open Roads, Fullbright was all but gone, leaving Tacoma kind of hanging in the "forgotten and under-appreciated" zone, in my opinion. This week our hosts Brittany and Rob look at one of the longest, craziest stories in pop music: the never-ending saga of “Hound Dog.” Big Mama Thornton came out with this massive R&B belter in 1952 and was the first hit from the legendary writing team of Jerry Lieber and Mike Stoller. The song comes in at #318 on the list, and instantly became a cultural phenomenon, inspiring countless cover versions, answer songs, rewrites and sequels in blues, pop, and country. The most notable was Elvis Presley's version of Hound Dog” in 1956, but he wasn't covering Big Mama Thornton's song – these were two very different tunes with the same title, and the only thing they had in common was the opening line, “You ain't nothing but a hound dog.” In this episode, Brittany and Rob dive deep into the secret history of “Hound Dog” and why time has simplified the story to being between Big Mama and Elvis. Rolling Stone senior writer Angie Martoccio also joins us to look at the song and its complex cultural afterlife. Together we celebrate the greatness of Willie Mae “Big Mama” Thornton, and the incredible power of her “Hound Dog”. For a song that's continued to change constantly throughout the past 70 years after it first became a hit, there's really no other story in music history like this one. From Jimi Hendrix to Doja Cat, we look at how “Hound Dog” keeps on inspiring sequels and likely will for the rest of history.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This week's episode arose from an essay I published on my blog several years ago. I was looking back on some of the stuff I wrote and found this particular piece, and thought, with a little re-writing it might make a decent episode of the podcast. So, re-write I did, and I'm generally happy with the result, though I'm once again fighting off a respiratory thing. James "Sugarboy" Crawford Anyway: James "Sugarboy" Crawford wrote "Iko Iko" in 1953, and recorded it with his band, the Cane Cutters. That version didn't go anywhere, chart-wise, and neither did any cover that followed, until 1965, when Jerry Lieber and Mike Stoller, using audio from the Dixie Cups' fooling around between takes, added a backing track and turned their version, with its nonsensical lyrics, into an international hit. The song became such a big deal that the Dixie Cups eventually received partial writing credit for the song because of all the changed lyrics. And that's all I'm saying here, go listen to the show. And please don't forget to share the show, and/or leave a rating somewhere. Click here for a transcript of this episode Click here to become a patron of the show.
Happy New Year! The group in 1961: Dub Jones, Carl Gardner, Cornell Gunter, Billy Guy. This was the configuration that was inducted into the Rock Hall. While they're often mistaken for a doo-wop group, The Coasters were actually a rhythm-and-blues vocal group, whose greatest successes came when they were teamed with the composers Jerry Lieber and Mike Stoller, and when they had humorous material to work with. They made such an impression on other artists that it was a small wonder when, in 1987, they became the first group inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. (Yeah, I know I'm kinda splitting hairs, here: the previous year was all individuals plus the Everly Brothers. But I'm sticking by this assessment.) One of the posters for the movie, which inspired the Coasters' song (but the song isn't based on the movie). This ain't a bad place to be, if you're Gary Cooper. Their peak years, chart-wise, were between 1958 and 1960, when all of their Top 40 singles were released. In today's episode we talk about three of them: Yakety Yak, Charlie Brown, and Along Came Jones. After these three came two more: Poison Ivy and Little Egypt, which were more clever than funny. There have been numerous configurations of the group since the first day, so you could argue that the one in the photo above, which is responsible for most of the hits, was the magic bullet. Through many personnel changes, The Coasters never quite reached the same level of success. We remember a number of musical artists and song writers, among others, who passed away in the previous months. Such notables as Jerry Lieber, Nick Ashford, Dan Peek, and Norma Zimmer are recalled. Mike, Smitty, and Ian pause to mark the tenth anniversary of the September 11th attacks. They recall how they first heard the news, and their recollections of that sad day. In addition, that day is equated historically to other dates in history that are indelibly marked in the history of our country. Ian recalls "Sea Hunt", and its star Lloyd Bridges. Our Retro-Commercial is for Maxwell House Coffee, voiced by Margaret Hamilton, the "Wicked Witch" of "Wizard of Oz". Listen also for a number of musical clips associated with the various artists who we have lost, in this edition of Galaxy Moonbeam Night Site!
