What is a “buttermilk sky?,” I asked myself. It's such an evocative image, and for years I would simply envision a magnificent sunset of red and gold, suffused through a canopy of fluffy clouds. I googled it, and I was right! Up came rows of beautiful celestial pics, and although those photos are fantastic, the image in my mind's eye had them all beat - attached as it was to an indefinable, stirring emotion within me, mystical in its effect.   That lyric was summoned from the ether by Jack Brooks, with Hoagy Carmichael writing the music. Hoagy introduced the tune in the film “Canyon Passage” with Dana Andrews, but, its appeal transcended the Cowboy genre. It was so popular that in December of 1946 there were four versions of the song in the top 20, led by Kay Kyser's band at #1. You may be aware that Hoagy was also the composer of “Stardust”, considered by most to be the best pop standard of the Great American Songbook ever written. And, he wrote the anthemic “Georgia on my Mind”. Film clips of him reveal one of the most relaxed and natural performers who ever appeared on celluloid - usually seated at a piano.  In my Acting class we screened “The Best Years of Our Lives” and Hoagy's encounter with the amputee Harold Russell, as he gives avuncular advice to the traumatized vet while tinkling the ivories is one of my favorite moments in a classic film stuffed with unforgettable scenes. I'm not sure, but my sense is that the image of the buttermilk sky reminds us of the evanescence of life, and the sweet sadness of a longed-for love.

One of Dean Martin's most famous songs, "That's Amore" describes love the way they do it in the southern Italy town of Napoli ("Amore" is Italian for "Love"). Filled with passion, the singer compares the feeling to his favorite Italian foods: pizza and pasta fagiole. It's a quirky romantic song poking a bit of fun at Italian stereotypes, something Martin - born Dino Crocetti - had every right to do. The lyrics were written by Jack Brooks with music by Harry Warren. The song first appeared in the 1953 movie The Caddy, starring Martin and his comedy partner Jerry Lewis. In his autobiography, Lewis said that when he and Dean were making The Caddy, the writers left Dean with little to do. Knowing this would increase their already strained relationship, Jerry went behind Dean's back and asked songwriter Harry Warren to write a hit song for Dean to sing in the movie. This was the result. What movies have the song that's amore? This has been used in a variety of movies, including Rear Window (1954), Ishtar (1987), Moonstruck (1987), Grumpier Old Men (1995), White Chicks (2004), Enchanted (2007), and Bridget Jones's Baby (2016). It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia ("The Gang Dines Out" - 2012). Wow.

The INSLAW Affair - Australian News Danny Casolaro, Michael Riconosciuto, Robert Booth Nichols, and others were mentioned rather prominently in the final House of Representatives Report #102-857 released to the public on September 10, 1992. The Investigative Report, put together by the Committee on the Judiciary headed by Congressman Jack Brooks of Texas, “The Inslaw Affair,” summarized a three year investigation into the theft of the PROMIS software from Bill and Nancy Hamilton, owners of Inslaw Corporation in Washington D.C. (The investigators who handled the three-year probe were listed on the Report as James E. Lewin, Chief Investigator, and John D. Cohen, Investigator.) Two federal court judges and the House Judiciary Committee ultimately concluded that “the Department of Justice acted willfully and fraudulently” and “took, converted and stole” Inslaw's enhanced PROMIS software by “trickery, fraud and deceit. https://ia600207.us.archive.org/9/items/TheInslawAffair/Chapter%2017%20-%20The%20Inslaw%20Affair.pdf Audio taken from: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QiVIDBDWivY

Fragment audiobooka "Płonące dziewczyny" C.J. Tudor w interpretacji Marcina Hycnara. Witajcie w miejscowości Chapel Croft. W tej uroczej angielskiej wiosce w XVI wieku na stosie spalono grupę wieśniaków, w tym dwie nastolatki. Trzydzieści lat temu zaginęły tam dwie dziewczyny, a przed dwoma miesiącami samobójstwo popełnił proboszcz miejscowej parafii. Jack Brooks – pastorka Kościoła anglikańskiego, oraz samotna matka piętnastoletniej córki – przybywa do wioski, aby objąć parafię po zmarłym poprzedniku. Wśród jego rzeczy znajduje m.in. zestaw do egzorcyzmów i notkę z cytatem z Pisma Świętego. „Nie ma bowiem nic ukrytego, co by nie wyszło na jaw, ani nic tajnego, co by się nie stało wiadome”. Im lepiej Jack i jej córka Flo poznają wieś i jej mieszkańców, tym głębiej zostają wciągnięte w podziały, tajemnice i podejrzenia. It'd been over two years since we had England captain Joe Root on the pod, and his brother Glamorgan star Billy hadn't been on the pod at all until they both joined the lads for this special episode (although Billy was sat in the studio as his then-team-mate Luke Fletcher appeared a couple of years back, so he knew what he was letting himself in for!). Imagine back-yard cricket, but then imagine it when two brothers are on opposite sides in a county match. Well, these two have done it... more on that in the podcast.  Greggy, Millard and Somerset-seamer Jack Brooks ask Joe about the World Cup final, The Ashes, his first away trip (and the wardrobe malfunction that came with it), nearly taking his first Test 5-fer back in January and his bat-drop celebration that he stole off former team-mate Brooksy.  Billy joins the fun to talk about his useful advice* for his brother on his Glamorgan team-mate Marnus Labaschagne for the Ashes, bagging an Aston Martin deal due to his own batting heroics last year, and he gives us a masterclass in Welsh.  Remember to comment, subscribe and let us know where you're listening to the UK's number one cricket podcast.  (*not the best) Also, fancy some free beer? Remember on the last podcast where there was talk about jetting off to Sri Lanka and Abu Dhabi? Well, unfortunately, neither of those things happened due to the worsening of the dreadful coronavirus. The Meanest Man in Congress is a biography of the late Congressman Jack Brooks, who represented Beaumont and southeast Texas from 1953-1995. He was one of the most influential and powerful congressmen of the twentieth century. Yet very in the general public knew who he was. He played a key role in the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, and was the only southerner on the House Judiciary Committee to vote for it. He drafted the articles of impeachment adopted by the House Judiciary Committee for Richard Nixon in 1974. He wrote legislation that forced the standardization of computer systems sold to the federal government helping to breakup IBM's dominance of the market. What makes this book fascinating is it provides a behind the scenes look at how some of the nation's most critical legislation was passed.
