Tom Cole moved to Southern Oregon in 1995 with the thought of starting a new regional chapter of Big Brothers, Big Sisters. Instead, what he saw around Medford made him realize the community was full of families whose children weren’t getting the educational support they needed, many of them low-income and from households that didn’t speak English. In 1998, Cole piloted an after-school program at one school, serving 50 students with a $500 grant. Since then, his efforts have turned into a full-fledged nonprofit called Kids Unlimited, which operates in nearly every public school in the Medford School District. In 2013 the organization launched the Kids Unlimited Academy, a charter school for underserved communities. Lupita Vargas was in kindergarten when she started in that first Kids Unlimited after-school program. At that time no one in her family spoke English, she says, and the tutoring and other support that the program provided to her and her three siblings was life changing. Vargas joins us, along with founder Tom Cole, to tell us more about her family’s experience, and talk about her job now as the nonprofit’s director of educational services.

In this episode, Danielle Radojcin visits the Sid Motion Gallery in South East London to talk to the British artist Phoebe Cummings, known for her extraordinary sculptures made from unfired clay. Phoebe's work challenges traditional views of ceramics, focusing on the beauty of impermanence as her pieces dissolve over time. They evoke themes of nature, transience, and the fragile relationship between humanity and the natural world. Phoebe was born in Staffordshire, the heart of the British ceramics industry. She studied Three-Dimensional Design at the University of Brighton before completing an MA in Ceramics & Glass at the Royal College of Art in London. A lack of funds to pay for a kiln forced her to begin working with unfired clay, and over the years, Phoebe has carved a unique path in the art world, becoming known for her ephemeral sculptures crafted entirely from the material. Her work is a reflection of nature's transient beauty and the passing of time, often exploring themes of growth, decay, and the fragile relationship between humanity and the natural world. Phoebe's pieces, which dissolve or disintegrate over time, challenge the traditional expectations of ceramics as a durable, permanent medium, and are more of a performance than static art piece, to be cherished as a memory rather displayed forever in a museum. In 2011, she won the prestigious British Ceramics Biennial Award, and her installations have been exhibited in notable institutions like the Victoria and Albert Museum and York Art Gallery.Join Danielle and Phoebe as they explore Phoebe's creative journey, the influence of nature in her art, and her upcoming exhibition at the Sid Motion Gallery curated by Tom Cole, where her work will be shown alongside that of Robert Mapplethorpe and Magdalena Abakanowicz.https://www.phoebecummings.com/https://sidmotiongallery.co.uk/

In this episode of the Govcon Giants podcast, we sit down with Mark Masters, the dynamic Executive Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Chloeta. Mark brings over twenty years of industry experience to the table, and his journey from a federal wildland firefighter to the helm of a multi-faceted national service provider is nothing short of inspirational. Mark is a proud tribal citizen of the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma. His career began in the rugged and demanding field of federal wildland firefighting. Over eight years, he served in various capacities, including as an aerially delivered firefighter, also known as a heli-rappeller. His tenure with the Bureau of Indian Affairs National Interagency Fire Center (BIA-NIFC) honed his skills in crisis management and incident response. In 2009, Mark transitioned from his federal role to entrepreneurship, founding Chloeta from very humble beginnings. Under his leadership, Chloeta has expanded significantly, becoming a national service provider across multiple domains: emergency management, environmental consulting, healthcare, security, aviation, and wildland fire management. Mark's expertise and insights have made him a highly sought-after public speaker and media commentator. He has shared keynote stages with prominent figures like Congressman Tom Cole and has been featured in live interviews on major networks including CNN Newsroom, CNN Money, and The Weather Channel. Mark's entrepreneurial spirit and achievements have been recognized with several prestigious awards. In 2012, he was honored with the National Young Entrepreneur of the Year award by the U.S. Small Business Administration. Additionally, he received the National American Indian Center for Enterprise Development (NCAIED) “40 Under 40” award. His contributions to entrepreneurship were further acknowledged when he served as a panelist on President Obama's Subcommittee on Small Business, Young Entrepreneurship Series (YES), an event broadcasted live on WhiteHouse.gov. Join us as Mark Masters shares his incredible journey, the challenges he faced, and the strategies that led to his success. After months of delay, this week House Speaker Mike Johnson advanced his much awaited version of the Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan foreign aid package. Standing between that legislation and the House floor: two very powerful committees. First, the House Appropriations Committee, which controls about a third of federal spending. And second, the Rules Committee, which controls access to the House floor, and which has become a problem for GOP leaders in this Congress. Johnson needed to pick the lock on both of these committees. And there is one Member of Congress who has chaired them both. Not just in the past year — but in the past month: Oklahoma Republican Tom Cole. Deep Dive host and Playbook co-author Ryan Lizza caught up with Cole on Thursday afternoon after he'd just testified in support of the foreign aid bill in front of his old committee. They got deep into the weeds of why the Rules Committee has been such a trouble spot for recent GOP speakers; and they discussed Johnson's tenure so far and whether Cole thinks the Speaker can hang on as members threaten to oust him. Cole also previewed how he will run the Appropriations Committee, including how he'll handle the controversial earmarks process. And Cole answered some prying questions from some of his favorite historians on the subject of Donald Trump. Ryan Lizza is a Playbook co-author for POLITICO. Tom Cole is the chair of the House Appropriations committee. Kara Tabor is a producer for POLITICO audio. Alex Keeney is a senior producer for POLITICO audio.

Gerard Millette Last Ring Boy Exposes Shocking Truths About Mel Phillips And Tom Cole
Shane Jett, Markwayne Mullin, Josh Brecheen, Scott Fetgatter, Steph Bice, James Lankford, Kevin Hern, Tom Cole and so many others have Oklahoma into an absolutely VIOLENT, TRASHY, LOW QUALITY OF LIFE, LOW WAGED, LOW HEALTH CARE, RADICALIZED ANTI-AMERICAN, ANTI-WOMAN state!
On this edition of Parallax Views, Vince McMahon, the former chairman and CEO of World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE), was the most powerful man in all of professional wrestling (or, as he likes to call it, "sports entertainment"). Now though McMahon is completely out of WWE after horrific allegations of sex trafficking and abuse of a former employee, Janel Grant. It's not the first time controversy has follow McMahon or WWE. There's also the case of Rita Chatterton, a former WWE referee who accused McMahon of rape, and the ring boys scandal, in which WWE employees Mel Phillips and Terry Garvin (as well as Pat Patterson) were accused of being involved in a pedophile sex ring within the company. In lieu of the latest accusations, I reached out to Josie Riesman, author of the book Ringmaster: Vince McMahon and the Unmaking of America, to discuss McMahon and the wrestling empire he built over the years as well as how it relates to issues like robber baron-style capitalism and labor exploitation. We'll also, of course, discuss the sex scandals mentioned above as well as diving into the early history of Vince McMahon, who initially grew up in poverty with an abusive stepfather. Moreover, we'll delve into the relationship between Vince and his biological father Vince McMahon Sr. and how the book is also about father/son relationships. Other issues discussed include: - Vince McMahon Sr. (Vince's father) and the FBI tapes in which he threatens pro wrestler Dr. Jerry Graham - The issue of "independent contractor" status in pro wrestling and how it could be seen as labor exploitation - The wrestling term "kayfabe" and why Josie believe the concept needs to be studied outside of a pro wrestling cotnext; Josie's concept of neokayfabe, omerta in pro wrestling, and the "protect the business" dictum - Tom Cole and the ring boys scandal - Vince McMahon's wife, Linda McMahon - And much, much more!
Since we want everyone to be able to learn from our Patreon series on the 1992 "Titangate" sex and drug scandals in WWE, want to be able to direct everyone to the shows, and don't want to give anyone the idea that we're trying to make money off of the awful new lawsuit against WWE, we're releasing all four Titangate shows for free. Permanently. We're really proud of the work we did on these, and we hope that everyone can learn from them.---Content warning: By necessity of covering this topic, though it is not the sole focus, this episode contains a significant amount of discussion of sexual harassment, sexual assault, and child sexual abuse, a non-trivial amount of which is descriptive. If you have any concerns that this content may be triggering or otherwise upsetting to you, then skipping this episode may be advisable. It's April [2022], and you know what that means: Time for a new Patreon-exclusive deep dive. This time, it's part 1 of a series on what became known as Titangate, the overarching collection of scandals that hit the WWF in 1992. We start in February 1992 with the attempted DEA raid of the locker room at a St. Louis house show as well as Barry Orton going public with sexual harassment allegations against Pat Patterson and Terry Garvin, which was actually the first public trace of that side of the scandals. After skipping the first week of March because we just covered it in-depth on the main show (ep. #344), we move on to what are probably the two longest weeks in the history of our Patreon shows to date. The week of March 9, everything starts to blow up with the Village Voice story that unleashed Murray Hodgson on the world, San Diego-Union Tribune article about drugs and the abuse of ring boys that introduced Tom Cole and Chris Loss, a bizarre WWF press release, the Los Angeles Times story that dwelled on Hulk Hogan's cocaine use way too much, and more, including Vince McMahon heeling on Bruno Sammartino on Larry King Live. And in the week of March 16, we get the legendary Titangate episode of The Phil Donahue Show and all of the related chaos, Phil Mushnick going scorched earth on Vince McMahon in the New York Post while revealing Vince's shocking admission about what he suspected of Mel Phillips, Wade Keller hitting the nail on the head about the direction of the media coverage, and more. And that just scratches the surface: There's tons more, including Hulk Hogan's gun charge, the WWF still using underage ring boys after being contacted for Jeff Savage's Union-Tribune story, how heavily Savage's article was edited before publication, Dave Meltzer spotting Hodgson's true nature early on, tons of media criticism including Alex Marvez's less than ideal handling of a rape allegation blurted out by Orton, Dave Meltzer's handling of the Vince/Phillips stuff, and the degree to which media went way too hard on Hogan/drugs to the exclusion of the more important story, and MUCH more. This is the longest Patreon show to date, and it's a doozy. We put a lot into it, so we hope you appreciate it.Timestamps:0:00:00 Weeks of February 17 & February 24, 1992Check out BTS episode #344 for the week of March 2, 1992, which includes the resignations of Pat Patterson & Terry Garvin and everything else that happened that week in extreme detail.0:58:56 Week of March 9, 1992 3:23:11 Week of March 16, 1992To support the show and get access to exclusive rewards like special members-only monthly themed shows, go to our Patreon page at Patreon.com/BetweenTheSheets and become an ongoing Patron.
