Today on Too Opinionated, singer Zara Phillips comes back for another visit. Somebody's Daughter - and the 2018 book and 2022 one-woman show the film is based on – focusses on Zara's personal journey of overcoming early addiction, navigating her life and meeting her birth father after many years and struggles after connecting with her birth mother. The project's true driving force is tofacilitate honest, vulnerable conversations about adoption. Too many people, she says, are ignoring these important issues. In addition to acting and writing, Zara is also a talented singer and songwriter who launched her career in the 80s, appearing in music videos and providing backing vocals on tour with Bob Geldof, Matt Bianco, David Essex and Nick Kamen. While taking some years away from creative endeavors to raise a family, she came back strong in the 2000s, releasing two albums(When The Rain Stops and You. Me & Us) produced by Ted Perlman, whose multi-faceted musical resume includes Whitney Houston, Bob Dylan and Chicago; earning a Best Homegrown Documentary honor for her 2008 film Roots Unknown at the Garden State Film Festival; and publishing in 2008 her first book Mother Me, a compelling memoir about her ongoing struggles as an adoptee now raising a family of her own. A few years later, Zara's song “I'm Legit,” co-written with Darryl McDaniels (DMC of Run-DMC), was a successful single in the adoption world and beyond. In 2014, Zara's one woman show Beneath My Father's Sky, directed by Eliza and Eric Roberts won Best Direction at NYC's United Solo Festival and was performed in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Connecticut and London in 2016. During this era, she was presented with an Angel in Adoption Award by the Congressional Coalition of Adoption Institute. Her most recent album, released in 2020, is Meditation and Kitkats, and she currently tours and performs with her husband, British folk-rock legend Richard Thompson, who scored Somebody's Daughter.   Want t owatch: YouTube Meisterkhan Pod (Please Subscribe)

KIM CARNES: The Voice, The Hits, The Legacy

A Breath of Fresh Air

Kim Carnes never set out to be a pop star. In fact, if you asked her in the early days, she'd probably tell you she just wanted to write songs. But life had a way of nudging her toward the spotlight, and before she knew it, she was belting out hits that defined an era. Growing up in Los Angeles, Kim was the kind of kid who could lose herself in a song, spending hours at the piano, crafting melodies. She started as a songwriter, penning tunes for others long before the world ever heard her own husky, unmistakable voice. Her first real break came when she landed a songwriting contract in the late ‘60s. It wasn't long before people started to notice that this young woman wasn't just writing good songs—she had a voice that could make them unforgettable. In the ‘70s, Kim found herself working with some of the best. She teamed up with David Essex. Their friendship led to collaboration. She also became close with Kenny Rogers. Kim co-wrote Don't Fall in Love with a Dreamer with her husband, Dave Ellingson, and when she and Kenny recorded it as a duet in 1980, magic happened. But it was Bette Davis Eyes that changed everything. The song was originally recorded by Jackie DeShannon in the mid-'70s. But when Kim got her hands on it, she and producer Val Garay transformed it into something completely new. The arrangement was stripped down, the synths were bold, and Kim's raw, smoky vocals carried a haunting kind of power."When I first heard Jackie's version, I loved it," Kim says. "But it was so different from what we ended up doing. The minute we started playing around with it, I knew we had something special. That intro, those drums, the way it just pulls you in—I still get chills when I hear it."When Bette Davis Eyes hit the airwaves in 1981, it was like a shockwave. It climbed the charts fast, sitting at No. 1 for nine weeks—longer than any other song that year. It wasn't just a hit; it was THE hit. Even Bette Davis herself loved it, sending Kim flowers and thanking her for the song that made her a household name all over again. "Getting that letter from Bette Davis was surreal," Kim recalls. "She was so gracious, so kind. She told me she played the song at her parties, which just blew my mind."Kim could have ridden that wave forever, but she was never one to rest on past success. She kept writing, kept recording, and kept working with the people she admired. One of those people was Barbra Streisand."Barbra is a force," Kim says. "When we worked together on Make No Mistake, He's Mine, I knew I had to bring my A-game. She has this presence—she knows exactly what she wants, and she'll work until it's perfect. And that's why she's Barbra Streisand."The song felt like a conversation between two women who knew exactly what heartbreak sounded like. Their voices blended in an unexpected way—Barbra's controlled precision meeting Kim's gravelly warmth—and the result was stunning.Through the ‘80s and into the ‘90s, Kim remained a force in the industry, both as a performer and a songwriter. She wrote for some of the biggest artists out there, proving again and again that she had a gift not just for melody, but for telling stories that stuck with people.Fast forward to today, and Kim is still making music, still revisiting the songs that made her who she is. In 2024, she released Bette Davis Eyes (Kim's Version), a new take on her signature song. This wasn't just a rehash—it was a love letter to the original, re-recorded with some of the same musicians who helped shape it the first time around. "I wanted to do it justice," Kim explains. "I wasn't interested in just re-recording it for the sake of it. I wanted to feel that magic again."And the response? Incredible. Looking back, Kim Carnes' career wasn't about chasing fame—it was about making music that mattered. Whether writing for others or stepping up to the microphone herself, she's always been an artist first. And that's exactly why, all these years later, we're still listening.

As she celebrates the release of her extraordinary autobiographical film Somebody's Daughter, Zara Phillips offers up some tough love truths that fly in the face of the often cheery, sanitized way adopted children (and other beings) are depicted in Disney films and other media. From her years of advocacy, studying contemporary sociological research and personal experiences as an adopted person herself, the passionate lifelong advocate for adoptees knows that even well into adulthood, their existential struggles of feeling like outsiders with little known stories of their history and birth parents makes them at least four times more likely to attempt suicide. They are also much more inclined to turn to addiction as a coping mechanism, as Zara did in her teens and early 20s. Somebody's Daughter - and the 2018 book and 2022 one-woman show the film is based on – focusses on Zara's personal journey of overcoming early addiction, navigating her life and meeting her birth father after many years and struggles after connecting with her birth mother. AL KOOPER 'THE LOST INTERVIEWS' EPISODE 6   Singer, songwriter, producer, and multi-instrumentalist AL KOOPER continues to relish an incredible life of music. Although these days it's mostly through his weekly online column for The Morton Report entitled ‘New Music for Old People' Kooper reveals… “This column is like the title says - its intention is to fill the gap for those of us who were satiated musically in the '60s and then searched desperately as we aged for music we could relate to and get the same buzz from nowadays. iTunes was the answer for me in 2003 and I have been following the new releases every Tuesday ever since I realized there was an endless stream of music I could enjoy there. The reason I am writing this column is to make sure others don't miss this. These are not top ten items; but they SHOULD be!” Kooper is also excited about the re-release of the classic ‘Super Session' album featuring Al Kooper-Mike Bloomfield-Stephen Stills. The album is re-mastered with the latest (Hybrid Multichannel SACD) technology. The package includes new liner notes written by Al Kooper that tell the story of the Super Session album and the new 5.1 Multichannel mix. The 5.1 mix by Al Kooper with mastering by Bob Ludwig was never released and yet it has acquired some fame from industry insiders familiar with the Multichannel mix with comments like "excellent" and "it deserves to be heard. “The new mastering of the Stereo tracks for new SACD Stereo and CD Stereo audio are by mastering engineer Steve Hoffman. -The official release of ‘Super Session' on amazon.com is -September 9th. AL KOOPER: had a life changing undertaking technologically and musically after receiving a Webcor reel to reel tape recorder as a Bat Mitzvah gift in 1957.Born in Brooklyn and growing up in Queens, New York … Kooper began his incredible music career as a fourteen-year-old guitarist with The Royal Teens (“Short Shorts” #3 U.S. Hit in 1958). In 1960, Kooper joined the songwriting team of Bob Brass and Irwin Levine and wrote “This Diamond Ring” (#1 U.S. Hit in 1965) for Gary Lewis & the Playboys. At 21, Kooper moved to Greenwich Village and began a momentous relationship with Bob Dylan. He performed and recorded with Dylan including adding his classic Hammond organ riffs on “Like a Rolling Stone”(#2 U.S. Billboard Hot 100 Hit in 1965). During those recording sessions, Kooper met Michael Bloomfield. In 1967, Al Kooper joined The Blues Project as their keyboardist. He left the band before the group was to appear at the infamous Monterey Pop Festival, and instead, along with bandmate Steve Katz, formed the jazz/rock/psychedelic/ R&B/ group …Blood, Sweat & Tears. Kooper left Blood, Sweat & Tears after their critically acclaimed debut release … ‘Child Is Father to the Man' (1968). The album spawned the classic rock mainstays … “I Love You More Than You'll Ever Know” (Penned by Kooper) and “I Can't Quit Her” (Written by Kooper/Levine). Al Kooper recorded a jazz inspired jam entitled ‘Super Session' in 1968 with Michael Bloomfield and Stephen Stills. The album spawned an incredible cover of Donovan's “Season of the Witch” and my favorite track “His Holy Modal Majesty” (Written by Kooper and Bloomfield). The album peaked at #12 on the Billboard 200 and was certified gold. It was Al Kooper who called Judy Collins in the middle of the night and put Joni Mitchell on the phone to sing “Both Sides Now” which eventually became a huge hit for Collins in 1968. Throughout the years …Kooper became a mainstay in the recording studio performing with The Rolling Stones, The Who, B.B. King, The Jimi Hendrix Experience, Cream, Alice Cooper, Peter, Paul & Mary, Joe Cocker, Tom Petty, and Roger McGuinn to name just a few. Kooper discovered Lynyrd Skynyrd in 1972 after watching several of their appearances at a frequented club in Atlanta. Al moved to Atlanta and signed the band to his new record label ‘Sounds of the South.' (He would eventually sell the label to MCA Records). Al Kooper produced and performed on Lynyrd Skynyrd's first (3) albums…  (‘Pronounced ‘Lĕh-‘nérd ‘Skin-‘nérd, Second Helping, and Nuthin'Fancy). Also, on the singles “Sweet Home Alabama,” “Free Bird,” and “Saturday Night Special.” Al Kooper produced The Tubes, David Essex, Nils Lofgren, Rick Nelson, Ray Charles, The Staple Singers, Bob Dylan, and Lynyrd Skynyrd … to name just a few. He also played and arranged three tracks on George Harrison's ‘Somewhere in England' album and performed with the remaining Beatles … George Harrison, Paul McCartney, and Ringo Starr, on Harrison's Hit single “All Those Years Ago” (U.S. #2 Billboard Hot 100 Hit in 1981). Kooper has also written and composed on countless albums and scores for television and motion pictures. And let's not forget an incredible SOLO CAREER … I Stand Alone (1969), You Never Know Who Your Friends Are (1969), Easy Does It (1970), New York City (You're A Women)(1971), Possible Projection of the Future/ Childhood's End (1972), Naked Songs (1973), Act Like Nothing's Wrong (1977), Championship Wrestling (1982), Rekooperation (1994), Soul of a Man (Live album 1995), Black Coffee (2005), and White Chocolate (2008). Al Kooper published his well- received memoir entitled … Backstage Passes and Backstabbing Bastards: Memoirs of a Rock ‘N' Roll Survivor. The first edition was released in 1977 with subsequent editions released in 1998 and 2008. (The 2008 edition being the best of the three). I had the rare opportunity of chatting with Al Kooper about the remastered classic ‘Super Session' album on 5.1 Multichannel mix … Al's column ‘New Music for Old People' … The Music industry today … Discovering Lynyrd Skynyrd … My infamous ‘Field of Dreams' question… And much-much more!   Support us on PayPal!

They all know it's Dynamite, And the music went on and on and on…The history books will tell us that, in theory, 1973 shouldn't have worked.Terrorist campaigns, oil shortages, petrol rations, power cuts. Peters and Lee.However, as the saying goes from great adversity comes great art. Or was it great sitcoms? Either way, 1973 stands not just as one of the greatest pop years of the decade, one could argue of all time. Really, I hear you cry? Where is the evidence that a year that could see Donny Osmond hit the top spot twice needs to be elevated to such greatness? And we didn't even win the Eurovision Song Contest? CONVINCE ME!1973 was perhaps the year where the decade finally shook off the ghosts of the Sixties. The Seventies had arrived and with breathless confidence, swagger and a reclamation of joyful pop by ‘the kids', the year provides an embarrassment of musical and cultural riches. 1973 had put on its best glam gladrags and was ready to light the fuse for the rest of the decade.Colour had arrived across UK TV sets just in time for the like of Slade, Elton, Bowie, Roxy Music and a host of others to trailblaze a lightning streak of supercharged escapism across the charts and into our homes every Thursday evening on Tops of the Pops. Suzi Quatro, Alvin Stardust, Wizzard and Mud joined the glam trail with huge glittery doses of pop sensibility and killer choruses, that at times felt as if the centre couldn't hold. David Essex provided one of the most memorable songs of the year as ‘Rock On' also spearheaded 1973's revival love affair with Rock and Roll as seen in the smash hit film ‘That'll be The Day'. But this stellar year also gave us a wealth of classic soul and funk, many of which still soundtrack our lives 50 years later. Let's celebrate the greats such as Diana Ross, The Temptations, Gladys Knight, Marvin Gaye. The list of highlights (just like the beat, pop pickers) goes on and on.And in 2023, the team at NOW have proudly provided us with a Yearbook and extra volume that together curates over 140 hits and memories from 1973; a pop year like no other. A compilation that is worthy of the title A CLASSIC.Joining me for this special episode is music consultant and Duckie legend Mark Wood and music journalist, author and cofounder of needle mythology records Pete Paphides. Discover why and how Mark has documented the whole year through his amazingly tireless, daily Facebook updates - and why 1973 is such an important year for him. Revisit Pete's memories of growing up in a chip shop and the sights and sounds that triggered his own fascination with pop. Along the way, also share in some fabulous anecdotes and stories including the tale of Roy Wood's lost man bag, Alvin Stardust's minders, which 1973 topped Saint Etienne's all time list, a plethora of Beatles related links and facts and how some Daytona divine intervention soundtracked a 21st century fairground ride for one of our guests. All of this and much, much more. Whether you were there first time around or are rediscovering the glam and excitement all over again, this is a very special episode that you'll not want to miss!Like Christmas, everyday baby. We discuss the impact of this song on the band many dubbed an overnight success. However Nick had years of touring with bands such as Slade, Hot Chocolate and David Essex before forming Cutting Crew in the mid-'80s with Kevin Scott MacMichael, Colin Farley and Martin Beadle recording three albums, Broadcast, The Scattering, and Compus Mentus, before the group broke up in 1993. From an early age Tim Rice was a pop music fanatic. He began his professional life as a trainee solicitor. While still an apprenticed clerk Tim approached the head of Arlington Books, Desmond Elliot, with the idea of writing a book about pop history. The idea didn't impress Elliot, but the fact that Tim was also a budding song-writer did. Elliot knew someone in need of a collaborator: a young man called Andrew Lloyd Webber, who wanted to be a composer. At Elliot's suggestion, Tim wrote to Andrew, and a meeting was quickly arranged. The two men hit it off immediately, and, owing to Andrew's love of American musical theatre, began to try to write a musical rather than pop singles. And so this story begins. Tim Rice continued to work with Andrew Lloyd Webber, giving us visceral and intelligent musical theatre fare that includes Joseph & The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Jesus Christ Superstar and Evita. The pair also share the unique accolade of writing a song for Elvis Presley; “It's Easy for You”. The song is also remarkable in that it is the last song on the last album released during Elvis' lifetime. Subsequent collaborations have been with fellow titans of the craft - Elton John, Alan Menken, Bjorn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson creating popular theatrical fare that includes Chess, The Lion King, Aladdin and Aida. His output has been presented by the Disney Organisation, on Broadway, in The West End and for commercial stages around the globe. The popularity of his works with community and school theatres has ensured that at any time, somewhere in the world, a Tim Rice musical is being produced. This year in Australia alone we have seen commercial productions of Joseph and the Technicolor Dreamcoat and Beauty & the Beast. Tim is the recipient of 3 Academy Awards, 4 Tonys, 5 Grammys and 1 Emmy - making him that ‘rare bird' in the entertainment industry - one of only 17 artists to have garnered an EGOT. He was knighted by Elizabeth 2nd for services to music in 1994. He has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, is an inductee to the Songwriter's Hall of Fame, a Disney Legend Recipient, a fellow of the British Academy of Songwriters, and has his own Cricket team. With Andrew Lloyd Webber he wrote a musical for Queen Elizabeth titled Cricket, and has crafted songs for Freddy Mercury, Placido Domingo and David Essex.Tim Rice has contributed songs to soundtracks, such as “All Time High” for the Bond movie Octopussy. His most recent musical work, From Here To Eternity opened in 2013. He is the co-author of the Guinness Book of British Hit Singles and a co-founder of Pavilion Books. And today, celebrates 400 episodes of the STAGES podcast. The STAGES podcast is available to access and subscribe from Spotify and Apple podcasts. What the Riff?!?
1974 - March: Gordon Lightfoot “Sundown”

What the Riff?!?

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 26, 2022 38:16

Canadian singer-songwriter Gordon Lightfoot would see his commercial success zenith with this tenth studio album, Sundown.  Lightfoot got his start in music at an early age, singing in the choir at St. Paul's United Church in Orillia, Ontario as a child. As a young man he lived in California for a short period, studying jazz composition and writing jingles to support himself, but he soon chose to return to his native Canada and never left.  Gordon Lightfoot would inspire many artists - Bob Dylan considered him a type of mentor - and numerous artists would cover his songs, including artists like Glenn Campbell, Olivia Newton-John, Eric Clapton, Bob Dylan, and the Grateful Dead. Sundown showcases Lightfoot's folk and country blend.  It hit number 1 on the US Billboard 200 charts, the only Lightfoot album to do so to date.  Lightfoot's baritone voice and acoustic-led approach to songwriting would prove a powerful formula for success in the soft rock genre of the 70's.  Gordon Lightfoot would continue writing songs for many years, and his 21'st studio album was released in 2020.Brian brings us this album for today's podcast. SundownThe title track was inspired by Lightfoot's then-girlfriend, Cathy Smith.  She would spend a lot of time drinking in the bars during the day while Lightfoot was working on the album, and he worried about her running off with someone.  And yes, the song was written around sundown.  It was Lightfoot's only Number 1 song on the Billboard Hot 100.High and DryThis upbeat folk song references the sea as a metaphor for a girl who the singer hopes will settle down before she gets left high and dry.  The female harmonies on this song are from Cathy Smith, with whom Lightfoot was having a tumultuous relationship (see above: “Sundown.”).The Watchman's GoneSpeculation abounds that the Watchman in this deeper cut may be alcohol, or the devil, or maybe death.  "You better beware, knowin' the watchman's always there."Carefree HighwayThis song peaked at number 10 on the Billboard Hot 100.  It tells of the highway as a means to escape the oft-returning thoughts of a relationship that was lost long ago.  Lightfoot saw a sign to Carefree, Arizona, and that inspired the title. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Day By Day by Robin Lamont (from the motion picture “Godspell”) This song was on the charts at the time.  It came from the motion picture, based on the musical "Godspell." STAFF PICKS:Music Eyes by Hartsfield Wayne leads off the staff picks with an underrated but epic song.  JC Hartsfield and Perry Jordan created the band in 1970 in Chicago, though the band has more of a country rock or southern rock sound.  Perry Jordan died in 2011, and JC Hartsfield died after a motorcycle accident in 2014.  The song was written by Jordan and inspired by a friend's 3 year-old daughter.Spiders and Snakes by Jim StaffordRob brings us this novelty song with a swamp rock feel.  Stafford cautions all the guys on being a bit too boyish around the women.  "I don't like spiders and snakes, and that ain't what it takes to love me."Rock On by David Essex Bruce's staff pick takes a psychedelic turn.  Essex would take this song to number 5 on the Billboard Hot 100.  It is an ode to the old days of Rock and Roll, with its reference to James Dean, blue suede shoes, and summertime blues.  Michael Damian would take a cover to number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1989.Boogie Down by Eddie KendricksBrian's staff pick takes a dangerously disco turn.  Singer-songwriter Eddie Kendricks who co-founded the Temptations would do well in this solo outing.  This falsetto song just missed the top of the charts, hitting number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100.     COMEDY TRACK:The Streak by Ray StevensAnd with that, we're off and running.  He likes to show off his physique.  Boogity, Boogity!
