In this episode, Dr. David Hanscom continues his discussion with Lee Canter – founder of Canter & Co. and author of My Migraine Breakthrough. He discusses the skills he learned in his work with Dr. David Schechter to break out of the pain and fear cycle. These included: realizing he could control his healing; learning to think about his symptoms in the context of his life; and using tools like meditation and expressive writing. He describes the psychophysiological approach used by Dr. Schechter. In the process, he discovered that he had more to offer the world, that he didn't have to be a “special” person and that his new life is wrapped up in giving back and doing what brings him joy. Lee's commitment to helping other sufferers of chronic pain disorders is a direct outgrowth of his experience with chronic migraine symptoms. After over seven years of being almost bedridden, seeing numerous medical professionals and getting no help from traditional biomedical treatments, he was finally cured of his symptoms using a psychophysiologic treatment approach. Critical to his recovery was the support he received from current board member Dr. David Schechter, and former board member Derek Sapico, LMFT. Lee began his professional career as a clinical social worker. He then became a highly successful entrepreneur. His first company, Canter and Associates Inc. was a nationally recognized educational training company. Over the life of the company, over one million educators and parents purchased its books and videos or participated in its training programs. The company was sold to Sylvan/Laureate Inc. His passion is to use his professional expertise and his personal experience to help spread the word on the use of a psychophysiologic treatment approach to other chronic pain sufferers, especially those with migraine symptoms.

David "Schoop" Schechter worked at the Dallas ABC affiliate, WFAA Channel 8, for 16 years. This week he quit his gig to go work as a national environmental reporter for CBS. In this episode, we talk about "cheerful nihilism" and David's amazing calf muscles. At least five stars.
Extremes are now more extreme. Record highs and lows are constantly being broken. And the water is already starting to rise along our coast. Scientists say it's not longer a projection. It is now reality in Texas. The United Nations released an alarming report on climate change earlier this year. And the lead author is from the University of Texas. So naturally, Y'all-itics called her up. And Camille Parmesan very matter-of-factly told the Jasons the goal of the report wasn't doom and gloom, but factual presentation. And she says looking strictly at the numbers paints a startling picture. Climate change is not only speeding up, its impacts are more severe than scientists thought even five years ago. But Parmesan says you already know this if you survived the Big Freeze that crippled our power grid for days and left hundreds dead in 2021. We can no longer say “this doesn't happen in Texas” because it does now. Dr. David Schechter didn't always buy into the idea of the mind-body pain connection. As a medical student, he relied on conventional and traditional approaches to pain management. But that was before he developed knee pain that felt almost impossible to resolve. He tried mechanical therapy and strengthening exercises as is typically recommended, but nothing seemed to work. So he approached an NYU physiatrist for help: Dr. John Sarno, who became one of America's most famous back pain doctors. Dr. Sarno told Dr. Schechter that his pain was psychosomatic. “That really threw me for a loop,” Dr. Schechter said. “It was not what I was expecting to hear.” But it worked. And Dr. Sarno's theory of Tension Myositis Syndrome, or TMS — that the mind creates pain in order to suppress traumatic events or subconscious thoughts and feelings — has been supported by independent research showing how the brain reacts differently to chronic and acute pain. It's an idea that has unfortunately come with social stigma: patients who suffer from TMS worry that the pain is “all in their head.” But psychosomatic pain is real, Dr. Schechter says, and understanding how our brain impacts our physical bodies is the first step to accurate treatment and recovery. Dr. Schechter joins us on episode 44 of Back Talk Doc to discuss the research behind mind-body medicine and the mind-body methods that best help address pain. “It's a more effective way to treat a particular type of symptom, typically chronic pain,” he says. “And it's a better way to define it. If you make the correct diagnosis, you're more likely to move forward with the correct treatment program.” Read the Full Show Notes on our website https://www.backtalkdoc.com/podcast.html (BackTalkDoc.com).

Dr. Richard Nahas practices integrative pain management in Ottawa, using drugs, injections, natural health products, acupuncture, manual therapy, mind-body techniques, nutrition and exercise. After graduating from the University of Toronto's faculty of medicine, he worked as an ER physician until 2004. His work during the SARS epidemic made him aware of what medicine is missing, and this led to a sabbatical to study traditional medicine while backpacking around the world. He has published textbook chapters, peer-reviewed journal articles and national treatment guidelines has participated in international clinical trials and has been an invited speaker at integrative medicine conferences worldwide.Dr. Nahas considers blockages to be the most important missing link in modern medicine. These lesions, which can persist after any injury or trauma, are linked to changes in fascia and the nervous system that create tension, inflammation and stress. He has developed the Seekers Method as a simple self-care and therapy technique, using movement and breath, touch and awareness. Pilot testing has revealed it to be teachable, safe and effective, and his goal is to make treating blockages a part of routine clinical care. He is developing mobile data tools to validate his method, and the BEAM project aims to Bring Evidence to Alternative Medicine by measuring outcomes in people seeking healing outside of guideline-based care.FREE ZOOM ONLINE CONSULTATION CALL WITH DR. You don't have to live near the Texas coast to soon start seeing the effects of climate change. The next decade or two mean more flooded parking lots, water in roads, and beach erosion from sea level rise. The ocean has already risen two feet in Galveston since 1900. But there's another problem unique to this state. Texas is also sinking. All the oil and gas we have pulled out of the ground for the last century is now causing subsidence. That means Texas will see a double whammy from climate change. What is Texas doing to address it? Turns out, not much. David Schechter, reporter for WFAA in Dallas, is one of the few Texas television reporters to consistently document the changing climate in our state. Last year, David won the duPont-Columbia Award, the broadcast equivalent of Pulitzer Prize, for his reporting on climate change. On this week's episode, we pour David a pint and listen to him explain what's at stake right now for Texas, why being the leader in wind and solar energy isn't enough. The U.N. Secretary General even had something to say to David about Texas ignoring the warning signs. Forget political talking points. The science is clear. As David put it, this is what we're headed for. Period. Watch: With world leaders gathering to find solutions for climate change, what does it mean for Texas? Texans face greater risk of heat, drought and hurricanes, but Abbott administration has no plan to tackle future threats of climate change The sea is rising faster than any time in the last 3,000 years, experts say | Climate Crossroads
Living with chronic pain sucks. We are now in the midst of a growing chronic pain epidemic. Why are rates of chronic pain so high? MRIs show that chronic pain occurs in different brain regions than acute pain. Chronic pain shows up in the amygdala and prefrontal cortex, yet around 99.99% of doctors treat chronic pain like acute pain. Fortunately, Dr. David Schechter, M.D., and a very small number of others are versed in the new research and as a result, can help you reverse chronic pain, not just manage it.
MD Dr. David Schechter and psychologist Dr. Justin Barker join Dr. Dan Ratner on Crushing Doubt to discuss their collaboration in mind body work, including their weekly groups helping people understand the role their minds play on their physiological experience. We talk about how crucial it is to have the fields of medicine and psychology in cooperation with each other in the effort to help as many sufferers out there as possible with these symptoms that bridge the gap between the two. We find commonalities in how these three work with people, particularly around the emphasis they put on the individual minds with which they are working and how we have to adapt to them. Other topics include the growing awareness of the importance of doubt in this work, the camaraderie of sufferers in groups and how this can be a healing factor, and working through the overwhelming amount of information on mind body issues that can feel confusing or contradictory to so many. David and Justin are doing great work in the field of mind body experience and finding Dan's framework a useful addition in understanding and Crushing Doubt as a resource for their patients. More collaborations are in order, as these two illustrate so well!

David Schechter, MD, runs his medical practice at the intersection of two seemingly conflicting fields: sports medicine and mindbody medicine. After a brush with mindbody symptoms of his own, Dr. Schechter was treated by Dr. John Sarno during his residency - an experience that would shape the way he approaches injury and rehabilitation. Now, in his own practice, Dr. Schechter works with athletes and individuals to help them tease out what’s physical about their symptoms, whether psychology could play a role, and how to move forward.
