Given the number of boarded up retail spaces across New York City, it may not be a surprise that retail jobs are down—there are fewer of most the accessible jobs. What does that mean for the City? Are those jobs coming back, and what needs to happen to insure that New Yorkers are prepared for the jobs the economy is creating? Our guest is Jonathan Bowles is the Executive Director of The Center for an Urban Future, a think tank that serves as a catalyst for smart and sustainable policies to reduce inequality, increase economic mobility, and grow the economy in New York City. Jonathan Bowles of the Center for an Urban Future lays out the group's ideas for what government can do to help new small businesses prosper.
Today I'm talking nerdy with Jonathan Bowles on taking a leap of faith and how to get out of your head and into your heart. In today's conversation, Jonathan and I are going to step away from the science for a moment and into the practical: what does it actually take to recondition your relationship with fear in such a way that it can exist without holding you back from creating a life beyond your wildest dreams?Jonathan is a motivational speaker, professional encourager, coach, and lovingly known as the pastor of disaster. He left a 16 year career in the evangelical megachurch to start his own company, Slingshot House, that now helps develop and launch the dreams of people all over the world. I wanted to bring Jonathan on to talk with me about living fearlessly because I recently recorded an episode on the anatomy of fear (episode 7) and Jonathan is the person that I personally call whenever I need a pep talk before taking a leap of faith. If you loved this style of episode, send me a DM @alex_nashton and let me know. If you hated this style of episode, send me a DM and let me know. I want to be recording episodes that are supportive and inspiring for you and I promise my little perfectionistic heart will be able to handle the feedback. Before you dive in, I would love it if you could leave us a 5 star review and a written review on whatever platform you're listening on. As New York’s small businesses confront the economic fallout from the coronavirus pandemic and the livelihoods of so many are at risk, it's time to build back better. We're talking about building better neighborly relationships - supporting the small businesses and restaurants in our communities, shopping local, being a tourist in our own towns and neighboring regions to preserve the businesses we know and love. Is this the carpe diem moment where we may be able to change the vision for economic development to be more equitable? This week's episode features Jonathan Bowles, Executive Director of the Center for an Urban Future, a think tank that serves as a catalyst for smart and sustainable policies to reduce inequality, increase economic mobility, and grow the economy in New York City.

Self-described former navy seal Christian, Jonathan Bowles (slingshot show) developed many of the top mega-church youth internship programs in the country. Preaching on Sundays to up to 5,000 people regularly, he quickly became a force in the mega church world. He shares how he went from fasting 40 days at a time and reading the entire Bible multiple times per year, to a complete deconstruction of faith. He openly discusses when his theology began to shift and the tension he felt while simultaneously having to tow the party-line. Hitting hard topics like the effects of being “blacklisted” from your community after leaving a church, how different beliefs can alienate you, and the struggles you encounter once you step outside “the box” – Jonathan is brave and honest while equally offering hope (and humor) to those venturing outside the church lines. In our conversation, he defines deconstruction and the difference between spirituality and religion.

What happens when you get three ex-pastors together for a night of comedy and conversation? Well, you're about to find out. In March of 2016, we set out to have a fun little live podcast recording in West Hollywood, Los Angeles California. We had no idea what the response would be, but we sold out of tickets and embarked on a full Open Space LA Theater came together, and it was wonderful. This is a wrap-up show of the live podcast recording event from West Hollywood California. A sit down with Jonathan Bowles, Taylor Hughes, and myself as we talk out our therapeutic process of losing our religion while playing some clips from the live show. We get into some things here that we didn't address in the show. Do we regret our past ministry days? Do we feel it was a total waste of our lives? You'll enjoy listening to this laughter, tears, and transparent honesty of three ex-pastors finding their way in this world after leaving the ministry, going back to childhood dreams, becoming stand up comics, selling underwear, and starting podcasts.
