As frustrating as the downtime was, it was a much-needed break that I think my body forced me to take. I appreciate your patience and understanding while I bounced back and can't wait for 2018.
The Happiness of Pursuit Podcast - Episode #102 with Travis Chappell Have you ever been the awkward lonely looking guy or girl at a conference, just waiting for someone to come up and talk to you at the bar, or breakfast table? Here's how most conferences go for me: I grab my badge from check-in. Next, I awkwardly walk into a hall with 150+ strangers and look around for a familiar face. When I don't recognize anyone I head to the bar or breakfast buffet. Still not recognizing anyone, I find myself staring down at my phone as if I am messaging a friend who is "on the way..." (sigh) For me, that's how most large conferences go! Today, I learned a ton of valuable tips from Networking Guru, Travis Chappell. In just over 25 minutes, he virtually helped me overcome my fears and gave me some awesome ideas on what I can do (and it's not just "get comfortable with being uncomfortable") - the best advice comes around the 20-minute mark. The Happiness of Pursuit Podcast - Episode #100 With Tom Bilyeu A little over two years ago when I started The Happiness of Pursuit Podcast, if you told me that I would have been filming the 100th Episode LIVE in Los Angeles on the set of Impact Theory with Tom Bilyeu, who the very guest that inspired me to pursue this journey, I wouldn't have believed it! When I launched this podcast, it was at one of the most challenging times of my life... I was adjusting to life as a new dad (my daughter was only five months old), I was commuting almost 2 hours to work every day, and I had no clue who I was going to have as a guest, or even what I was going to talk about. I knew one simple thing - I had to start! I had to take action and learn with every interview. That simple practice of "taking action" became the mantra for the show - "find your passion, take action, and build the life of your dreams." By making the simple choice to take action and start The Happiness of Pursuit Podcast; I have had the opportunity to interview over 100 amazing entrepreneurs, philanthropists, and industry titans. The journey has now culminated with the opportunity to interview Tom Bilyeu, Co-founder of Quest Nutrition and Impact Theory. I'm a relentless agent for change, here to see how far I can push my own potential and the potential of others. I used to think I was Morpheus or Neo, now I know I'm the White Rabbit. My job is to simply show you how deep the rabbit hole really goes. The rest will be up to you. I'll consider mine a life well lived if we can pull people out of the Matrix by positively impacting the direction of the culture at large. I believe that's done through two things: 1. The creation of, financing for and mentoring of mission-based businesses and entrepreneurs and 2. The creation of media properties of all types that tell empowering stories. (more here) In our interview, Tom goes deep into how to find your passion and build your life by providing value. Most importantly, Tom shares his insights into the Impact Theory Belief System, which you can download right here: http://info.impacttheory.com/impact-theory-belief-system/. It has been an honor to share this platform with you and provide you with the stories, tools, and strategies to build the life you want to live. I look forward to the next 200 episodes.

The Happiness of Pursuit Podcast - Episode #98 with Casey Cease Would you ever be able to forgive someone for killing someone you loved? What will you learn from this episode of The Happiness of Pursuit Podcast: >>The importance of forgiveness >>How to bounce back (from any situation) >>The need to take action >>How to build a business from a personal struggle When Casey was in his Junior Year of high school, Casey was battling a growing depression. After having his heart-broken, and hearing a distressing story he left a party he was hosting late at night, against the best efforts of his friends to keep him there. As he was leaving his neighborhoodin despair, he changed his mind, turned around, and was headed home. As he was nearing his home his friend was in the middle of the road waving him, he swerved to avoid him and crashed. When he swerved, he turned in the same direction his friend jumped. He hit him going 80 mph. When he awoke in the hospital he was told by a State Trooper that he had killed his friend. While he was in the hospital, the parents of his friend came to the hospital and forgave Casey! As a parent to two young children, I can't imagine their loss, but more mind blowing, I can't imagine what it took for them to forgive Casey. The challenge for Casey, he needed to find a way to forgive himself. What Happens When You Hit Rock Bottom? For years after the accident, Casey battled depression, and thoughts of suicide. It wasn't until Casey publicly shared his story that he began to heal, and realized the power of story. In that healing process, Casey started to write a book about his experience to help others battle through their own personal tragedies. In his writing process and publishing process, Casey saw how little support there was for those who wanted to write and publish their book. There were basically two options, approach a traditional publisher or self-publish, but there was little support in between. He approached his mentor with the opportunity and eventually created Lucid Books, which is a Partnership Publisher. The irony in Casey's story, he is dyslexic. I'm probably one of the only dyslexic publishers in the world. When you hit rock bottom, the only direction left to go is up! To get the complete show notes, visit www.douglasjfoley.com/98
We have all heard the story... "In 2008, when the economy tanked I lost my job..." Starring a 10-year high school reunion in the face, Keith F. Shovlin, knew he had a few things he wanted to check off his list and becoming an author was on it! He had a book idea, but no luck finding a publisher. Instead of throwing in the towel, he decided to publish the book himself, and in taking action realized that he wasn't the only one struggling to find a publisher. That lead to the creating of AOIS, which has now evolved into AOIS Media. aois21 media is a cloud-based publishing and production service for creators and consumers everywhere, providing a marketing infrastructure to support self-publishers, the tools and guidance to new authors and performers starting out, and titles and programs that span all genres and generations. The Happiness of Pursuit Podcast - Episode #96 with JJ Flizanes "You cannot find a solution in the same state of mind that created it!" Have you struggled with diets? Let's be honest, we all have! That's why I was so excited to talk with someone who started an "Anti-diet movement". The description of JJ newest book, "The Invisible Fitness Formula: 5 Secrets to Release Weight & End Body Shame", sums up our conversation perfectly: If you’ve struggled with finding a deeper, healthier, and happier connection to your body, food, and lifestyle, the Invisible Fitness Formula is the answer. "If you want to take the island, you need to burn the boats" I don't have a single tattoo, but if I get one that might very well be the one! It has become a mantra in our house about adopting change. It reminds me of so many stories about the enlightening moments when entrepreneurs finally let go and went all into their business. This weeks guest, Tara Bradford, took that leap - so much so that she moved to New York City without a true plan on how she was going to pay for her apartment. That commitment left her with only one option - to succeed. When you take failure off the table, you leave yourself with one option, and that is finding a way to succeed. This is the exact same reason that you hear so many rags to riches stories following "I hit rock bottom..." "When you finally have reached the bottom the only way is up!" From Stay-at-home mom to 7-figure entrepreneur... "When people pay more, they pay attention" I knew when I read Vanessa's Bio, that the interview was going to align with the goal of the show to help people reach their full potential. What I was not expecting, is how real, genuine and valuable the advice would be that followed. After a few years as an active stay-at-home Mom, the burning desire for entrepreneurship peaked and Vanessa Shaw started a wellness benefit with 6 clients at $50/hour. As fast as the business win came, she lost the initial clients. Having to start over, she took that lesson and increased her fees. Within two years she had built a Within two years she had built a 6-figure business after landing a large law firm. For the next 3 years, she enjoyed the success, but at the sacrifice of her happiness. Around the 5 year mark, she lost that client and nearly went bankrupt. It was in that struggle, she rebuilt quickly only to take one of the biggest leaps of faith... Vanessa sold their home, left Europe, and started completely from scratch in California, all while her husband continued to work overseas for 2 more years. Most people, even those close to her, said it was insane, but her dedication, commitment, and drive have led to rebuilding a nearly 7-figure business. The Happiness of Pursuit Podcast - Episode #91 "Find your gift and give it to the world!" - WordPlay T.Jay I was blown away by the insight and tactical advice that WordPlay T. Jay shared in this episode. After struggling with depression, he found music. That passion grew inside of him, and he knew that he could share his gift with the world and spread happiness and a message of positivity in a genre typically filled with violence. WordPlay T. Jay broke through after hustling his way onto MTV's RapFix. What surprised me in this interview, was his insight into music is a skill that anyone can learn. "If you work hard enough, anything can be learned and perfected. It is just about getting on stage." To get the complete show notes, visit www.douglasjfoley.com/91
"Flip your "What IF" from a Negative to a Positive" - Bond, The Ad Strategist This episode is one of the rawest and most authentic interviews to date (it contains some swearing, so make sure the kids aren't in the car). We go deep into what entrepreneurship is REALLY LIKE. If you have been following this podcast for a while, you know how important mindset is to building a business. In today's episode of The Happiness of Pursuit Podcast, Amanda Bond, better know as Bond, founder of The Ad Strategist, dives deep into her personal transformation, and how she allows her gut and passion to guide her business. What was shocking to me, was the fact that after numerous failures, Bond kept going and has built one of the most reputable Facebook Ad management businesses in the space. In the interview, Bond shares the story about how she bounced back from a $10,000 chargeback after completing 3 months of hard work (for those who are unfamiliar with a chargeback, the client basically makes a claim and their money is returned). For most people, that would have been the end of their business - they would have thrown in the towel. Bond, shares how working on her mindset helped her embrace failure, and allowed her to survive those inevitable tough times in business. Andy Amick turned his love for mountain biking into one of the most interesting legacy building exercises I have heard. As Andy's passion for Mountain Biking grew, he discovered a race called "Tour Divide", which is a 2,745 mile (4,418km) ride from Banff, Alberta to Antelope Wells, New Mexico. After a grueling 24 days, Andy completed the race at with countless stories to share. What was unique about Andy's story (aside from the run in with a Mountain Lion), was that Andy found it more challenging writing and publishing a book, then riding a bike for 24 straight days. In addition to writing a book, and completing the "Tour Divide", Andy has built an e-commerce business selling mountain bike specific first aid kits, along with a number of other great resources (find them here). While Andy grew up in an entrepreneurial family, he did not inherit any of these natural traits. He is a software programmer by day and runs this business on the side as a legacy business he would like to pass on to his children. So many industry giants are recognized for building billion dollar fortunes, having a fleet of jets, yachts, mansions, etc. We often fail to recognize the passion-preneurs who have built businesses that reflect who they are and the things they life - like Andy. From selling strollers and car seats to paying off his mortgage in 3 years, Alex Barker has mastered the side hustle... Don't forget family - 80% of your time with your kids will become before they are 18. I knew from the moment Alex reached out to me on Facebook that we were going to have a great conversation. Early in his pharmacy career, Alex and his wife had a burning desire to help other couples adopt. The challenge, as a pharmacist it would be very difficult for them to do this so Alex started his journey into entrepreneurship. With very little business background, Alex started to buy and resell used baby strollers and car seats online. I don't have to tell you how fragile this precious gift of freedom is. Every time we hear, watch, or read the news, we are reminded that liberty is a rare commodity in this world. – President Ronald Reagan Freedom isn't free... With Memorial Day around the corner, it is always a great time of year to show gratitude to those who have committed their careers to a life of service. There is no greater sacrifice than that of those who risk their lives to provide the very freedoms we often take for granted. Below are 5 very distinct groups of people who live a life of service that I am incredibly grateful for: >>Men and Women Serving in the Armed Services >>Men and Women Serving as Police, Fire, and Paramedics >>Men and Women Serving in the Medical Field (especially Nurses) >>Men and Women Serving in Charity, especially the new wave of >>Entrepreneurs building Public Benefit Corporations (like Toms, Ten Trees, Patagonia, Quest Nutrition...) >>Moms! Here are the shortcuts to creating a better quality life: Start valuing your time, and what it is worth. Here are 5 Things you can do to create a better quality and quantity of life: 1. Sell your junk - use craigslist, eBay, Kijiji, or a Garage Sale - you're goal is between $1,000 - $1,500 2. Ask for a raise - find out how you can provide more value, over deliver, and ask for fair compensation 3. Cut wasteful spending - get rid of unused memberships (like the gym you haven't seen in 6 months) 4. Barter - how can you exchange services to do more of what your life, in exchange for what you don't (i.e. if you like woodwork, could you help someone build a deck?) 5. Start a side business doing what you love - there are limitless opportunities to offer your own unique value to make an extra $100-200/month (tutoring, web design, photoshop, baking, etc.) If you want to read the complete show notes with links mentioned in the podcast, visit www.douglasjfoley.com/85

"Jay Alan Samit is a dynamic entrepreneur and 'intrepreneur' who is widely recognized as one of the world’s leading experts on disruption and innovation. He launches billion dollar businesses, transforms entire industries, revamps government institutions, and for over three decades continues to be at the forefront of global trends...(read more)" A little over a week ago, I had shared one of the lessons from Disrupt You on Instagram, when Jay Samit reached out to me to say thank you. Less than a week later, I had the opportunity to interview him on The Happiness of Pursuit Podcast. Through Disrupt You, Jay challenges readers to rethink their traditional approach to business and shatters any excuses that may be standing in your way. That advice is followed by tactical steps you can take today to being thinking like many of the billionaire entrepreneurs Jay has coached in his career. One of the most simple, yet practical exercises he recommends is "to write down 3 problems you face every day. After a month, you have 90 ideas, and a theme will likely emerge. The bigger the problem, the bigger the opportunity." What really blew me away, was the way he reframed the solution, "when you don't know how to solve that problem, find something that does..." "Steve Jobs didn't know how to code, and he created the largest tech company in the world." During my research for the keynote, I looked how successful businesses were able to scale and the common traits behind their founders. In an 18 year professional career, marked by four runner-up finishes, two of which were decided by playoffs, and years of criticism and personal struggle; Sergio Garcia finally won his first major at The Masters. What was astounding about his win, wasn't the years of heartbreak, or even the underdog story in itself, he was actually a favorite in most odds. It was the fact that Sergio Garcia never gave up, and not just in this tournament, but in his pursuit of a major championship. Here is a quick snapshot of Sergio Garcia's near Major Championship Wins: >>1999 PGA Championship - finished second to Tiger Woods, but was made famous when he hit a miraculous blind shot with his eyes closed followed by a sprint and scissor kick to see where the ball had landed >>2007 Open Championship - led after all three rounds, made bogey on 18 to eventually lose to Pádraig Harrington in a 4-hole playoff >>2008 Tour Championship - after leading again in the final round, Pádraig Harrington came from behind to win by two, leaving Sergio Garcia in second again >>2014 Open Championship - finished second to a red-hot Rory McIlroy >>2017 Masters - won in a playoff over Justin Rose So what's so special about Sergio Garcia's win at The Masters? He proved two very important lessons for success: 1. You have to be in it for the long game, and 2. Never, ever give up. To get the full lessons, head over to www.douglasjfoley.com/81
"Happiness is undervalued in our lives...we value hardwork and success, but none of those are possible without happiness" - Colette Streicher I recently finished reading "Stealing Fire" by Steven Kotler and Jamie Wheal. The book is about "Silicon Valley executives like Eric Schmidt and Elon Musk, Special Operators like the Navy SEALs and the Green Berets, and maverick scientists like Sasha Shulgin and Amy Cuddy have turned everything we thought we knew about high-performance upside down." Within minutes of talking to Colette Streicher, I saw an instant connection to how high performers are using a heightened state of consciousness to up their game to a new level. Colette Streicher moved to the United States from France in 1995. In 2001, she graduated from the University of Houston with a Master’s Degree in Social Work with a specialization in family therapy. Colette currently operates a successful international practice as Peak Performance Coach. For more than 20 years, Colette continually studied many different therapies stemming from the field of Energy Psychology. These studies include EFT with Gary Craig, Thought Field Therapy, Matrix Energetics, Bodytalk, Quantum techniques, Seemorg Matrix as well as many others. In 2013 Colette co-founded a new method in the field of psychology (Manifesting All Possibilities(TM), MAP for short. Through the use of MAP, practitioners are able to create extraordinary results. The method was proven effective to rewire the brain through the use of QEEG technology. MAP is a revolution in the field of psychology as it gets instantaneous results without the use of tapping or even talking. The Happiness of Pursuit Podcast - Episode #79 How To Write Your Own Success Story with Marie Wiese, Founder of Marketing CoPilot I knew this podcast episode was going to be great... A Canadian, Content Marketer, Best Selling Author and Entrepreneur - that's a recipe for a perfect guest and Marie Wiese didn't disappoint! In this episode of The Happiness of Pursuit Podcast, Marie Wiese talks about her entrepreneurial journey and how she was able to literally write her own success story. After being gifted a typwriter when she was a little girl by her grandmother, that gift for storytelling, led to a career in PR. That career quickly led down an entrepreneurial path with a startup, which, like many other dot com businesses in the mid 2000's, unfortunately, led to a financial collapse. Marie bounced back and started consulting. After reflecting on how she helped the business grow to 100+ employees and raised over $25 million in funding, she knew she could repeat that process. Years later, Marie continues to run Marketing CoPilot and "help companies build digital marketing programs that make a difference. We deliver strategic guidance and tactical execution so companies can jump-start their digital marketing efforts to be more engaging, customer-centric and competitive." What you will learn in this episode of The Happiness of Pursuit Podcast: >>How to overcome fear >>The importance of asking for help >>What Marie's next book will be about >>The value of storytelling To connect with Marie and get the books we talked about visit www.douglasjfoley.com/79
Learn how to get more out of life, push harder, and become a beast. If you're not happy with your life, take a look at the people your hanging out with. One of my favorite questions to ask guests is; "what is the advice you would give your younger self before getting started?"... This week's guest wrote an entire book distilling that information. Lonnie Gordon Ogulnick is the founder of Gordon Wealth Management and author of 'The Heart of the Beast.' His book "teaches you the strategies to find and unleash the beast inside of you—on every level, from the physical to the social to the spiritual." They're the people around you who live life to their fullest potential. The people who are in the zone from the moment they wake up in the morning to the moment they fall asleep. The people who attack life with energy and aim at the impossible. Not everyone has it in them to become a beast—too many of us settle for mediocrity. But for those of us who don't, entering beast mode is a matter of putting in the work, investing in ourselves, and pushing ourselves to live life purposefully and powerfully. As the economy transforms around us—leaving us with less security and less certainty, but with staggering rewards for winners—pushing ourselves to become beasts is less and less optional. It's becoming a requirement for survival. What you will learn on this episode of The Happiness of Pursuit Podcast: >>How to create a powerful network >>How to unleash the beast inside you >>What you need to do to live up to your full potential To get the full notes visit www.douglasjfoley.com/78
"You can’t get to the end without going through the middle" I had the privilege of meeting Karem Kalin at a local entrepreneur breakfast where we heard Dragon Den Host (aka Dragon) and Best-selling Author of "The Wealthy Barber," David Chilton speak. What was more interesting after getting to know Karem, she was actually pitched her business idea on Dragons Den (for my American listeners, that's the Canadian version of Shark Tank). What was even more surprising, was Karem's keen ability to take action. The entire goal of The Happiness of Pursuit Podcast was to inspire people to take action and pursue the life they want to live, and in doing so I believe they will find true happiness - well that is exactly what Karem did... Ironically, the idea she pitched on Dragon's Den (which she explains at about 5:25 in the episode), got to the point where it was too much and it led her to an opportunity with the Arbonne, a Network Marketing Company. After a few short years, Karem was able to replace her salary at her job in public health, which she had worked at for over 15 years. Since leaving her job, Karem's business has exploded and she now has the time and resources to pursue her true passion of traveling the globe with her family. Success meant being able to control my own time The hardest part of starting a business is finding customers. The second hardest part of a business is parting ways with a client. This past year, JenerationPR tripled their business, yes 3x, and Jen Berson attributes that success by parting ways with her first, and longest standing client. For most people, that would sound absolutely insane. Yet, when you take a deep honest look at your life and your business, you need to get clear about what's holding you back and where you can deliver value. Throughout this episode, Jen shares how the focus on value helped her scale her business. What was unique about Jen's perspective on value, is it was not limited to the value she provides to her clients, but also to the people on her team and how she can add value to their lives by giving them flexibility in their daily lives. The Underdog's Secret To Winning... One simple word: Momentum Regardless if you're a fan of sports or not, what happened in Super Bowl 51 was one of the greatest comebacks in history...(well except for when the New York Giants came back to beat the Patriots in Super Bowl 48, but I'm a giants fan!) Halfway through the third quarter of Super Bowl 51, my wife said to me “This game seems pretty boring…” Without even knowing it, my reply would have nearly predicted the future, “It’s Tom Brady, all you have to do is watch the 4th quarter…” What Tom Brady accomplished in the 4th quarter was impossible by almost any stretch of the imagination. So was it Brady’s #GOAT (greatest of all time) ability that helped them win? Yes, but it wasn’t the only reason…like many of the historic comebacks in sports, and business, it came down to one simple scientific fact: momentum. Momentum is the single biggest force, and when you learn how to turn it back in your favor, no matter the odds, you can, and more often than not, will win. So the question is, how do you get momentum on your side? First, we need to understand what momentum is and how it is created. By definition, Momentum is the quantity of motion of a moving body, measured as a product of its mass and velocity. What’s more important is how momentum is created, and that is through what is called a “Moment of Inertia” - that single event of force to cause a body at rest to begin to move. To pick up momentum, you can do one of two things, increase the speed (velocity) or the mass. The reason that the Patriots won Super Bowl 51 was because they took over the momentum. In almost every single comeback story in sports there is a “turning point”, that moment in time, that single event, where “the tide shifted” - that right there was the moment of inertia the team needed to swing momentum in their favor. Sure, luck might play a part in it, but the real difference in many of the comeback stories you read about for a lifetime, comes down to three crucial things: preparedness, leadership, and community...(read more here: http://douglasjfoley.com/74

"It wasn't until I was alone, with the gun on the table when I realized I had hit bottom..." -Wilson Horrell It's hard for me not to start every single episode with "I was blown away by this guest..." Podcasting has been one of the most powerful gifts when it comes to my personal development. When I started The Happiness of Pursuit Podcast, I wanted to inspire people to find happiness in the pursuit of their dreams by taking action. During a trip to Las Vegas, he hit the jackpot, literally, and won over $2 Million. While his story is a sad and common one amongst lottery winners, what Wilson did after is amazing. This past year I had the incredible opportunity to interview Jeff Hoffman, founder of Priceline.com on Episode #42 on The Happiness of Pursuit Podcast. It was a conversation that would change my life and helped me understand what is possible when you find your passion and take action. When I asked Jeff why he chose to become an entrepreneur and what he was most passionate about? His answer shocked me. He always had a dream to visit every country in the world, Jeff always had a dream to visit every country in the world. One day while at his office, he was on the elevator headed to the 4th floor where he worked. One of his friends and colleagues got onto the elevator, and proceeded to push the 6th floor. When Jeff got to his desk, he realized he had yet to visit the 6th floor of the building to see his friend. If I can't even get to the 6th floor to see my friend, how am I going to see the world? Jeff was so determined to see the world, and so passionate about accomplishing that goal, it became the centerpiece of so many businesses. If you pull back the covers of what he has done, you can see how travel is at the core: Founded Priceline.com Invented the technology that allows you to print boarding passes at the airport Founded "Unreasonable At Sea" - a philanthropic mission to solve the world's problems by taking a cruise ship of millennials around the globe to witness and solve the challenges they observed Jeff was able to build a life around what he loved - and is changing the world in the process. How can you find your passion and start to change the world on your own terms? Here are 5 simple questions that you can ask yourself to help you find your passion: >>What do you read? >>What do you watch? >>What do you talk about? >>What do you write about? >>What would you do if you knew you couldn't fail? Imagine building a business so you could be home with your kids, have time freedom, and a decent predictable income...then one day in a single email and it is all gone! That is exactly what happened to Barara Siemen, and her first blog "Farm Barbie". Her original blog shared her life "on the farm" and her name was "Barbara", so "Farm Barbie" was a perfect fit - unless your Mattel! After a tough legal battle, Barbra had no choice but to shut everything down. For most people, that would be the end of blogging.
