Today we're talking nerdy with Alex's favorite neuroscientist of all time, the author of her favorite neuroscience books, Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor. In this episode, Dr. Jill and Alex will talk nerdy about some of the major distinctions between the right and left brain hemispheres, how learning how to selectively access either hemisphere can make a major impact on the way you move through your day or your life, how the human brain is designed in such a way that we are at our core feeling beings who think NOT thinking beings who feel, the miracle and magic of our own cellular biology, and how neuroscience can answer some of the bigger questions we have about life such as what we as human beings are here to do. If you've never heard of Dr. Jill, you are in for such a treat. Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor is a Harvard trained and published neuroanatomist who is now affiliated with the Indiana University School of Medicine. In 1996 she experienced a severe hemorrhage in the left hemisphere of her brain causing her to lose the ability to walk, talk, read, write or recall any of her life. Her memoir, My Stroke of Insight, documenting her experience with stroke and eight-year recovery spent 63 weeks on the New York Times nonfiction bestseller list. Her most recent 2021 book is WHOLE BRAIN LIVING: The Anatomy of Choice and the Four Characters That Drive Our Life. Dr. Taylor loves educating everyone about the beauty and resiliency of our human brain, and how we can live a more peaceful and satisfying life. In 2008 she gave the first TED talk that ever went viral on the Internet, which now has well over 29 million views. Also in 2008, Dr. Taylor was chosen as one of TIME Magazine's “100 Most Influential People in the World” and was the premiere guest on Oprah Winfrey's “Soul Series” web-cast. Today I'm talking nerdy with Professor Russell Foster about the neuroscience of circadian rhythm. In this conversation we're diving into the relationship between light and your body clock, how your body transforms light information into electrochemical information, why melatonin is NOT the driver of sleep, the impact of circadian rhythm disruption on physical, mental, and emotional health, and some of Russell's evidence-based recommendations to reset your own body clock. Professor Russell Foster is the Head of Oxford's Nuffield Laboratory of Ophthalmology, the founder and Director of the Sleep and Circadian Research Institute. His research addresses how circadian rhythms and sleep are generated and regulated and what happens when these systems fail because of societal pressures, ageing and disease. A key finding has been his discovery and characterisation of an unrecognised light-detecting system within the eye that regulates circadian rhythms and sleep. Professor Foster has published over 300 scientific papers and has received multiple national and international awards, including most recently the “Daylight Prize”. He has co-written four popular science books and his fifth with Penguin entitled Life Time was published in May 2022 and is a best-seller in both hard-and paperback. Today I'm talking nerdy with Victoria Lutzhoft about money, sex, and why shame prevents us from having vulnerable, uncomfortable, and deeply healing conversations about them. In this episode we're diving into the value of healing and being witnessed in community, where shame exists in the brain, how it inhibits our behavior, what is required to create a safe space for outing yourself, and how to begin having conversations about sex and money that ultimately lead to experiencing greater freedom in both of those facets of life. Victoria Lutzhoft is a human being, mother, sister, wife, seeker, community builder, and coach. She set off on a personal discovery path in 2016 after dead-ending in jobs, stuck in a loop of overeating and drinking and never feeling fully satisfied with life. Victoria has traveled both internally and externally to find home. That has enabled her to move from disempowered, numbing and easily overwhelmed with life to more aligned, able to express herself fully and determined to follow her desire. Whether it's a coach training program, emotional intelligence school, breath work or reiki the basis of everything Vic does and teaches is about learning to feel her feelings and let her feminine lead. Today I'm talking nerdy with Dan Carter again and this time we're diving into the neurophysiology of pain: physical, mental, and emotional. This episode is less of a conversation and more of a masterclass where Dan will teach you about the biopsychosocial factors that influence pain, how our nervous systems and stress perceive pain, the relationship between pain, stress, and trauma, and most importantly how to manage our levels of pain physically and psychologically. The last conversation that I had with Dan on Talk Nerdy To Me was about the ripple effects of childhood trauma and this one is a continuation of that in some regards. Because this episode will dive into trauma related concepts, sensitive listeners should be advised. Today we're talking nerdy about the therapeutic value of psychedelics and psilocybin in healing your brain and your heart. In this conversation with Alex Waters, we're diving into some of the neuroscience behind how psychedelics and more specifically psilocybin change your brain by temporarily shutting down the Default Mode Network, the part of our brain that's responsible for every day consciousness and ego, allowing for deep healing and neuroplasticity. We also talk about the scientific literature that highlights the effectiveness of trust and surrender in the efficacy of psychedelic healing modalities, the combination of psychedelics and music to amplify a ceremonial experience, and the internal barriers to entry that stop individuals from exploring plant medicine such as fear, resistance, the illusion of control. One of the things that makes this episode super unique is that Alex actually coaches me through some of the fear and perfectionism that has held me back from exploring psychedelics further. Alex Waters is an international speaker & highly trusted certified trauma informed Master Coach. He has extensive experience & training in the fields of ancient plant medicine, somatic therapy, NLP, simple and complex trauma, Inner Child work, intimacy work, tantra and masculine & feminine embodiment work. Today I'm talking nerdy with Jonathan Bowles on taking a leap of faith and how to get out of your head and into your heart. In today's conversation, Jonathan and I are going to step away from the science for a moment and into the practical: what does it actually take to recondition your relationship with fear in such a way that it can exist without holding you back from creating a life beyond your wildest dreams?Jonathan is a motivational speaker, professional encourager, coach, and lovingly known as the pastor of disaster. He left a 16 year career in the evangelical megachurch to start his own company, Slingshot House, that now helps develop and launch the dreams of people all over the world. I wanted to bring Jonathan on to talk with me about living fearlessly because I recently recorded an episode on the anatomy of fear (episode 7) and Jonathan is the person that I personally call whenever I need a pep talk before taking a leap of faith. If you loved this style of episode, send me a DM @alex_nashton and let me know. If you hated this style of episode, send me a DM and let me know. Today's guest has been one of the single most influential people in my own life and mental health. In this conversation, we talk about the most common dysfunctional and unhelpful patterns of thinking and behavior that people struggle with, the difference between desire and motivation in creating lasting change, what stops people from changing, and the skills that are necessary for psychological health and resilience. Dr. Raymond Bepko has been a practicing psychotherapist in New York State since 1978. He is presently in private practice in the central New York area. His practice encompasses traditional emotional and behavioral issues including depression, anxiety, trauma, and adjustment to life events. Dr. Bepko specifically uses mindfulness-based cognitive behavioral therapy to help his patients recover from and transcend mood disorders, pain, illness, injury, addiction, and trauma, and to develop and practice the specific attitudes, skills, and behaviors central to physical and psychological wellness. Dr. Bepko has also been my personal therapist for the last 8 years and who I lovingly refer to as the Robin Williams to my Good Will Hunting. In today's episode of Talk Nerdy To Me, we're going to dive into the intersection of science and spirituality, the autonomic nervous system, why stress isn't actually as bad as you think, and one of the most powerful practices you can do right now to support your brain and body. Today I'm talking with Kristin Leal: a teacher, lecturer and body worker who travels the world with her MetaAnatomy trainings passionately sharing about the miracle of the human body and the liberating potential of both movement and stillness. She is the author of the books "The Yoga Fan” and “MetaAnatomy- A Modern Yogi's Practical Guide to the Physical and Energetic Anatomy of Your Amazing Body” which was called "smart and sassy" by Elena Brower and "a luscious resource" by Rod Stryker. Teaching for nearly 30 years, she has graduated thousands of teachers through her own 200 and 300-hr teacher trainings along with working for in person and virtual yoga training programs around the world. In 2021, she was invited to join the anatomy advisory team at Yoga Journal Magazine. These days you can find her in her new home in London, England writing books, studying in a nearby park full of swans and teaching virtually and producing offerings in her faux fur lined-plant and bone filled home yoga studio.Episode Resources: V.S. Ramachandran Quote: “The human brain is without any doubt the most complexly organized form of matter in the universe. The brain is made up of 100 billion nerve cells or neurons. Someone has calculated that the number of possible permutations and combinations of brain activity exceeds the number of elementary particles in the universe. And this gives you some idea of the staggering complexity one is faced with in trying to understand the functions of this mysterious organ. In this conversation with China McCarney, we talk about what his own mental health journey has looked like, the role that stigma played in perpetuating his own struggles with anxiety and depression and the most effective tools he's learned. In this episode we'll also touch on topics such as imposter syndrome, vulnerability, ownership, and the role of service as a form of accountability and self-leadership.China McCarney is the Founder & CEO of the Athletes Against Anxiety and Depression Foundation. He is also the VP & CFO of Jaeger Sports Inc. in Southern California. China was also a minor league baseball player who was drafted in 2008 by Cleveland and in 2009 by Tampa. China started the foundation Athletes Against Anxiety and Depression because he deals with anxiety on a daily basis and felt the need and desire to “Be The Change” that he was seeking in the world instead of waiting for a change.China resisted and fought his anxiety disorder for 6 years before he finally decided to attack it head on. He discovered that the second he embraced anxiety it no longer had the severe crippling effect that it previously had on him. As he began to study anxiety and depression, he realized that stigma is a huge part of the problem. China's goal is to help everyone embrace their attributes through courage and vulnerability and to help everyone "Be The Change" they wish to see in their lives.Episode Resources:Follow China on Instagram hereFollow AAAD on social media hereLearn more about AAAD and get free therapy hereThe Daily Mental Health YouTube ChannelVulnerability AFGO!
