Video Version About the Podcast Hello and welcome to another edition of State of Readiness. I am your host, Joseph Paris. My guest today is Ben Guttmann, Author of “Simply Put; Why Clear Messages Win―and How to Design Them.” We start the conversation going back to high school where Ben was fortunate enough to have attended a high school that had a business department and offerings for those who were interested in business goings-on. It's here where Ben got hooked on marketing. We share our ideas on communicating, mostly born of experiences. Why do people feel they have to pack so many words around an idea to get the point across; and all at the risk of making the message less clear. As an example, Joseph shares his experience as an elementary school student. When returning from summer vacation, the teacher would always ask for a "500 word essay on what I did on my summer vacation." Joseph shares that "I went fishin' and I went swimmin.' Now I have to find another 493 words of fluff to pad it and complete the assignment." Ben shares how he and a few friends came to start their own marketing firm, Digital Natives Group, starting out of an opportunity that presented itself while they were attending Baruch College. One of Ben's professors, who also ran a marketing agency, needed help with digital marketing. They meet with the professor's partner, and Ben and his friend decide to start a marketing agency specializing in digital with the professor's firm being the first client. They even set-up shop in the basement of the professor's agency. So, in the spirit of "Simply Put", I will leave it here. Enjoy the podcast. Ben Guttmann is an experienced marketing and communications expert and educator on a mission to get leaders to more effectively connect by simplifying their message. He is a former co-founder and managing partner at Digital Natives Group, an award-winning agency that worked with the NFL, I Love NY, Comcast, NBC, Universal and other major clients. Currently, Ben consults with a range of thought leaders, venture-backed startups, and other brands. He went attended Baruch College where he earned his Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration and Marketing Management. Jeannette talks to Alayna Francis, a senior communications leader and philanthropist about her diverse career journey - from working in book publicity to crisis communications and branding. Alayna shares her insights on effective crisis communication strategies, emphasizing the importance of taking ownership and addressing issues in a timely manner. She also highlights the significance of personal branding and adapting to cultural differences when working internationally. KEY TAKEAWAYS Communication is crucial in any organization, especially during a crisis. It is important to respond promptly and effectively, addressing the issue and providing accurate information to alleviate confusion or misinformation. Personal brand is important in career development. Being authentic and true to oneself while also adapting to cultural differences and respecting others' boundaries can help build strong relationships and make a positive impact. Philanthropy and giving back to society are important values. Supporting disadvantaged individuals and groups, promoting equity, and leveling the playing field in areas such as sports and nutrition can have a significant impact on people's lives. Cultural awareness and adaptability are essential when working internationally. Understanding and respecting different cultural nuances, communication styles, and approaches to business can lead to successful collaborations and relationships. BEST MOMENTS "Communication is kind of like air. You don't realize how important it is until you don't have any." "Even if a company may be guilty of malfeasance, if they take ownership and address it in a meaningful way, that always mutes what the situation is." "You have to get into the core of what the issue is. The most crucial point is how you respond and the amount and timing of your response." "You have to be your authentic self, but then also soften enough or sculpt your approach and who you are in order to make people feel comfortable around you." This is the perfect time to get focused on what YOU want to really achieve in your business, career, and life. It's never too late to be BRAVE and BOLD and unlock your inner BRILLIANCE. Welcome back, listeners! It's Season 4 of Owning Up! First, we are grateful for YOU, our listeners, partners, and sponsors. Now, let's jump right in! This season, Moni wanted to bring on guests who are influencers in our community. They are dreamers, makers, doers, believers, bold and bravely creating the career of their dreams. This podcast is here to support military spouse business owners. Moni talks with Jamie Bennett, Human Resources Director of IFundWomen and an entrepreneur. She began her journey at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, then the Lehman Brothers, followed by the Consumer Credit Counseling Service of Greater Atlanta, a non-profit in the financial services industry. She also has twenty-five years of experience in human resources. IFundWomen is a partner with AMSE, and our relationship helps us serve and provide resources to help our members get all they can on their entrepreneurial journey. Even though Jamie always wanted to be a businesswoman, she ran from her entrepreneurial journey. Raised as a military kid, she understands the service and sacrifice mindset of the military family. So it's no surprise that she gives credit to that sacrifice when speaking about how she was able to attend Spellman College, where she received a B.A. in Economics. She received her MBA from CUNY - Baruch Colleg, The Zicklin School of Business, specializing in HR. After working in human resources, she wanted to branch out and start her own business. Jamie continues to work in human resources because she loves serving the community. The employer-employee relationship has changed, and she loves bridging the gap between them. Know there is comfort in being anonymous. You have to walk hand in hand with fear. Know one will remember the 80% you forgot, just the 20% you remembered. She believes you will have no peace unless you do what you were created to do. Know who your support is and understand where people fit in your journey and when you can bring them in. Be mindful of the categories between an employee and a contractor. Then, get on the IRS website and find out all you can. When you're a solopreneur, write down everything you're doing. When you're a solopreneur, write down everything you're doing. First, what are you too expensive to do as the CEO. Then, make it make sense for your business. Get your mindset right. Get your prices right. Consider who you're serving when your price your products and services. She's training to become a coach and is excited to help others transform their business journey. For more information about Jamie and her company website, visit the IFundWomen website or find them on LinkedIn and Facebook. In this episode, Cathey Kuo, talks about her upbringing and how she got her start in real estate and business.Catherine "Cathey" Kuo is a real estate broker, investor, and entrepreneur with over 10 years experience in commercial real estate leasing & sales, real estate investing, asset management, and 1031 exchanges. As a business owner and investor herself, Cathey has an innate grasp of the real estate market and entrepreneurship which allows her to be solution oriented and empathize with all parties in a deal to structure win-win resolutions. Her immense desire to help others fulfill their dreams of entrepreneurship and grow their investment portfolios & wealth stems from her own family's humble beginnings. As the child of first generation immigrants, she experienced firsthand the countless goals and opportunities that could be achieved through grit & hard work and strives to empower and inspire others to fulfill their dreams and full potential.Cathey began her career in real estate working alongside her mother, who has her own successful 30 year track record in the industry as an agent, broker, and investor. This early start provided her with a visceral understanding of the industry as she began to analyze investment opportunities since she was in high school. After high school, Cathey went on to obtain her BBA in Real Estate from Baruch College's Zicklin School of Business in New York City then began her career in commercial real estate in the Midtown Manhattan NYC office as a wheel program associate with CBRE.After a few years of working in the commercial real estate industry in NYC, Cathey relocated to Las Vegas in 2014 to take advantage of the business, investor, and tax friendly environment and regulations in the city as well as the far better quality of life. Although she initially relocated to Las Vegas to build her own portfolio, she soon realized the immense opportunity and calling to help others build their portfolios & wealth. Bringing her northeast real estate experience and work ethic to the market, she has been able to help countless business owners and investors achieve their goals against the odds as she treats her clients with the quality of service she demands. At the same time, she worked diligently to add value to, lease up, and stabilize her family's 80,000 SF portfolio in town, bringing the total occupancy from under 50% to over 90%.In addition to brokering commercial real estate deals, Cathey serves as the Broker and a Partner / Co-Owner of Elite Homes - Engel & Völkers Las Vegas and helps lead business development, marketing, and strategic growth for the firm with her business partner. She is also an angel investor and co-founder of Kyou Beauty, a salon and spa in Las Vegas' bustling Chinatown district. When Cathey is not working, she enjoys trying all the amazing restaurants in the city, going to the gym, and traveling. She admittedly has trouble not being productive and hasn't owned a TV in years so outside of work and her hobbies, she is also an active member of the local community and loves supporting its many business groups & charity events and organizations. Her favorite way to pay it forward is through mentorship and she has served as a volunteer for numerous groups where she has both spoken to groups and mentored individual high school and college students, including serving as an board member for OCA, whose primary purpose is coordinating a mentorship program for UNLV & CSN students, for a number of years.
