In this, the eleventh episode in our Learn About ME podcast series, we discuss how Occupational Therapy can support people living with Long Covid and M.E. Our guests are Katie Davies, Occupational Therapy Team Lead in NHS Grampian; and Corinne, a patient with Long Covid. To avoid potential harms by energy management being wrongly applied, the 2021 NICE guideline for ME/CFS recommends that, “in specific circumstances, people with ME/CFS should be referred to a physiotherapist or Therapist (OT) in an ME/CFS specialist team.” OTs can uncover the relationship between the challenges people face, their environment and the daily activities they need and want to carry out. The podcast highlights the importance of taking a person-centred approach and being flexible from the beginning, with practical tips based on experience.  Corrine talks about the difference occupational therapy made to her, including supporting with pacing, while Katie highlights the need for OTs to understand post exertional malaise (PEM) and how it impacts in ME/CFS and Long Covid, triggered by the smallest amount of activity (physical, cognitive, emotional).  Any healthcare professional can learn more about ME/CFS and the vital adjustments the people may need in consultations and support services by taking Dr Nina Muirhead's free 60-minute Learna CPD module.

Joining me today is Katie Davies, guitarist and vocalist for the British grindcore band Pupil Slicer. The band's debut Mirrors was released in March 2021 and it captured my interest, the combination of mathcore, grind and post metal was unique in its delivery and transportive in its effect on me as a listener. I found myself revisiting Converge's Jane Doe and Dillinger Escape Plan's Calculating Infinity, finding new musical and lyrical nuggets within those classic albums. In addition to describing how those and other artists have impacted their song and riff-writing; Katie touches on vocal-style and conveying tension between the fun musical energy they perceive from these influences and Pupil Slicer's lyrics. We loved our interview with Katie Davies! Her journey is a beautiful one of self acceptance and learning to live with her mental illness. We talk about her OCD/PD/GAD and Scrupulosity. How to recognize signs, the spectrum of differences in OCD diagnosis, how to support those with the illness. We learn about Exposure Therapy and how she used this specific type of treatment.  We discuss how to help mental health awareness go "from a whisper to a song" and how talking openly and freely is so important. Katie shares about her wedding being postponed, twice. Two were canceled. One permanently, one from covid. She shares how hard this was for her and how she handled the circumstances. We chat about life as a single lady in a culture that encourages marriage. She shares her experience of "35 dates by 35". (You will not believe what one guy did on a date!)  Katie shares what it's like going from working full time as a choir teacher, single and living in Salt Lake City...to a married lady, in a rural Wyoming community to a step mom of 4. She transitioned to being SAHM and now has a new little baby boy! We love all she does advocating for mental health awarness by sharing on her podcast, "Mental Health & Me". She talks about how starting the podcast helped to foster healing and bring hope to others.  Katie has always felt supported by her family through her Mental Health Journey. She has an instagram account where her and her 2 sisters share how to have a JOYOUS, HEALTHY, & HAPPY life. We talk about the time they had an IG Reel goes viral. (Another funny story!) The frontwoman of one of the hottest new bands in metal talks transphobic media bias, and a power metal epic turns out to be queer metaphor overload, in the latest queer take on metal. Katie Davies from UK mathy grinders Pupil Slicer is the latest voice from those members of the LGBT+ community who make metal happen. She chats to Tom about the band's lyrics, and some of the LGBT+ issues they cover, including the transphobia inherent in much of the current media climate. Matt and Tom also discuss 'Larger Than Life', the 2014 epic by Sonata Arctica, and find the whole thing awash with relevance to the queer experience, and coming out especially. Plus the entries for the Hate Crew Gaybar jukebox are the new Orden Ogan album, Final Days, and Exanimis' debut record Marionnettiste. One of which needed a peace treaty to be signed before discussions could begin. There's also shocking revelations about a gap in Matt's blockbuster movie knowledge, and Tom steps in two massive gay clichés. (Also Matt's mic gets possessed by a gremlin for one second around the 45 minute mark. We're sorry about that. We will stop feeding it after midnight.)
