In this episode, we're talking about the fertility journey for same-sex couples. And to do that, we have board certified reproductive endocrinologist, Dr. Keith Hansen at the Sanford Fertility and Reproductive Medicine Clinic in Sioux falls, South Dakota 

The Egg Wars—a hidden Gold Rush kitchen—when food was scarce and men died for eggs. We travel out to the forbidding Farallon Islands, 27 miles outside San Francisco's Golden Gate, home to the largest seabird colony in the United States. Over 250,000 birds on 14 acres. But it wasn't always so. One hundred seventy years ago it was the site of the “Egg Wars.” During the 1850s, egg hunters gathered over 3 million eggs, violently competing with each other, and nearly stripping the island bare. In 1969 the Point Reyes Bird observatory began working to protect the Farallones. The islands had been through a lot. The devastating fur trade of the 1800s. The Egg Wars. During WWII the Islands were used as a secret navy installation with over 70 people living on the island. From 1946-1970 nearly 50,000 drums of radioactive waste were dumped in the Farallon waters. Fisherman often shot high powered rifles at sea lions and helicopters were causing whales and other animals to panic. Today the Farallones are off limits to all but researchers, some who live out on the desolate island for months in the old lighthouse there. Surrounded by thousands of birds, they wear hard hats to keep the gulls from dive bombing their heads. The Islands are a sanctuary—The Farallon National Wildlife Refuge, managed by the US Fish and Wildlife Service. The Kitchen Sisters were given permission to travel out to the islands on one of the supply runs that goes out to the islands 2 times a month. Today's episode is dedicated to Keith Hansen, who made an ambivalent comment about this poem that I'm crazy about. I try to explain my enthrallment with this poem and Wright's latest work in general. Was it a success or  "a raid on the inarticulate With shabby equipment always deteriorating" ? (T.S. Eliot) Who knows? But it was worth a try.

Keith Hansen brings us Denise Levertov's grouping of poems titled "Lake, Mountain, Moon." These are lush, grand, and worth listening to with closed eyes and a still body...if you can pull that off.

The Kenyan government has expressed reluctance to drop stalled projects estimated to have already cost the taxpayer Sh390 billion in a new raft of conditions set by the International Monetary Fund. National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi expressed dissatisfaction with the proposal World Bank Country Director, Keith Hansen however says the institution will seek to develop Kenya's capacity support in favour of proper public investment. The IMF Executive Board had earlier approved the immediate disbursement of Sh29.2 billion under the Extended Credit Facility, in a move meant to support Kenya's program to address debt vulnerabilities and aid in the response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Capturing and gently handling hundreds of birds for banding studies gave him an intimate understanding of their build, anatomy, plumage and character, all crucial things for a budding bird artist. Over the years, he created bird illustrations for books, scientific journals, magazines, newsletters, and logos. Taking about 14 years to illustrate the 320 species that occur in that great mountain range, and five years to write, his latest book is Hansen's Field Guide to the Birds of the Sierra Nevada. Keith is a 9 time (that's not a typo) Canadian National Champion Men's Volleyball Coach. He has degrees with specialization in recreation, sports psychology and business administration, and found time to coach professional volleyball in Germany as well in the middle of his historic coaching run. Beyond being an excellent person to talk to about fostering team success on all fronts, Keith is also an excellent story teller and motivator. He connects with those he teaches and is incredibly passionate about delivering the content. These skills have been demonstrated time and time again as Keith excelled in the athletic director role as well, and has multiple awards and inductions to show for it. The best part? You'd never know he was this damn good. Pete Myers Pete is founder and chief scientist of Environmental Health Sciences and a trustee of the Jenifer Altman Foundation. He has been photographing birds for more than 40 years. His images and writing about birds have been published in numerous venues, including Audubon, Natural History, and American Birds, magazines, plus numerous publications in the scientific literature. He is the co-creator of BirdsEye, the birding app that uses data from the Cornell Lab of Ornithology to help birders find birds. The app was highlighted by the New York Times as “app of the week” in 2009. Pete is an international authority on endocrine disruption and was co-author, along with Theo Colborn and Dianne Dumanoski, of the seminal book Our Stolen Future. He received a Ph.D. from U.C. Berkeley for ecological studies of shorebirds, including years of research on sanderling along the sandy beaches of northern California, including Point Reyes and Bodega Bay. Keith Hansen Keith took up illustrating birds in 1976, his senior year of high school. He explored much of California as a young man, expanding his explorations toward Mexico and Central America, the tropical Pacific aboard a NOAA research vessel, and then a foray to the Andes, the Galapagos, and the Amazon of Ecuador. As a visitor and volunteer for the Point Reyes Bird Observatory, he was introduced to the breathtakingly beautiful region of Marin County’s Point Reyes Peninsula. Keith has created bird illustrations for books, scientific journals, magazines, newsletters and logos. His most recent endeavor has been a 14-year project illustrating a book entitled Birds of the Sierra Nevada: Their Natural History, Status and Distribution authored by Ted Beedy and Ed Pandolfino.
