His election triggered the secession of Southern states and ignited a conflict that would redefine the nation.What's rarely discussed is Lincoln's extraordinary unpopularity during his presidency. In the South, he was reviled as an existential threat, while many Northerners criticized his wartime tactics, including the suspension of habeas corpus and imprisonment of newspaper editors sympathetic to the Confederate cause. It probably strange to think of a time when the security of the President of the United States wasn't a top priority. That time would be right around five days after the Civil War ended with the surrender of Robert E Lee and his confederate forces. It should have been a time of rebuilding and healing as a nation, but a man named John Wilkes Booth (you may have heard of him) took it upon himself (maybe?) to avenge the defeat of the south by killing the man who lead the Union to victory. SEASON 2 EPISODE 86: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:44) SPECIAL COMMENT: The seven justices of the Supreme Court have given no indication HOW they will rule on Trump's disqualification under the 14th Amendment and they have given no indication WHEN they will rule but here's a bigger issue: They have no RIGHT to rule. The 14th Amendment clearly, unquestionably, inarguably, and ETERNALLY states that an insurrectionist can't serve in an elected federal or state office, or a lot of other offices, and it doesn't allow anybody to overrule the Constitution because the 14th Amendment already HAS a means for disqualified traitors to appeal – the drafters OF the 14thAmendment BUILT THAT REMEDY IN - and they have already designated two bodies to overrule disqualification under special circumstances, and those bodies are the United States House of Representatives and the United States Senate and if they each vote by two-thirds to let Trump back on the ballot, he's back on the ballot. That is, for all practical purposes, IN the Constitution! And if they DON'T, he's not. That is also, for all practical purposes, in the Constitution! And we KNOW this because it was written, principally, by Congressman John Bingham, a Radical Republican who not only was one of the House Managers for the IMPEACHMENT of President Johnson, but earlier Bingham had been the Assistant Judge Advocate General during the trial of the accomplices of the man who murdered Lincoln, John Wilkes Booth. And if John Bingham's attitude towards insurrectionists wasn't clear enough from the 14thAmendment and the completely justified slow roasting of President Andrew Johnson – just a reminder: the eight co-conspirators charged in the Lincoln Assassination that the co-author of the 14th Amendment PROSECUTED included Mrs. Mary Surratt who ran the boarding house where the conspirators met, and the stagehand at Ford's Theater who did nothing more than hold Booth's horse while he went in and murdered the president. They HANGED half of the defendants – including the woman who ran the boarding house. Three of the other four were given life sentences. The guy who held the horse got six years at hard labor. They DID make a concession to Mrs. Surratt. While they were preparing to hang her and the others they let her sit in a chair. The authors of the 14th Amendment weren't EFFING AROUND. Who in the World is Geoff Shepard?This show is an attempt to introduce you to him and get to know exactly who he is. We have discussed him at various times in our 1973 episodes but this as an in-depth look at who he is and why he is a man of unquestioned stature. I also wanted to put this show together because of my own experience with coming to learn about this man and his work , a chance to address the usually skillful way the other side undermines everyone with a different viewpoint in the eyes of the public. It's also a way to keep a skillful eye on current events too.The first time I had ever heard of Geoff Shepard I was arguing with a former anchor at my local television station over drinks.  Since the advent of social media I have developed a reputation as a rabid Nixon defender.  My friend, who was on WPDE - TV 15 in Myrtle Beach, was not a Nixon fan. Over the course of our argument he said something along the lines of me believing looney conspiracy theories, and threw out Geoff Shepard's name. I had never heard of him but was aware that a little cottage industry of hairbrained conspiracy theories had cropped up over Watergate and various other historic events from the Lincoln Assassination to the assassination of John F. Kennedy, to the Bermuda Triangle for that matter.  But for me after the back and forth with the anchorman, I mostly forgot about it. A while later I got to talking with a friend of mine who was the Assistant City Attorney for the City of Myrtle Beach. He was the young man who had broken up the fist fight years before between our Mayor Mark McBride and a City Councilman Wayne Gray in executive session.  That fight had made national news at the time.  The Assistant City Attorney had since moved on before I was elected, but we became friendly acquaintances. He had seen some of my posts on Facebook about President Nixon and had told me about his own legal work with Geoff Shepard and how Shepard had told him all about his time working with Richard Nixon. Then he sent me an article that had been in The Atlantic Magazine. It was a fascinating look at what had really happened in Watergate.  That is when I realized that there may be more to this man than what the anchorman had portrayed to me earlier.  When Geoff Shepard's second book came out "The Real Watergate Scandal (Collusion , Conspiracy and the plot that brought down Nixon) "  I went out and bought a copy. It was a stunning, shocking, mesmerizing book that I almost highlighted from cover to cover. It was one of the best books on Richard Nixon and Watergate I had ever read.  So I did some research on the author.  What I discovered was he is a very serious man, and more importantly, a very credible one with a long resume of experience both as part of the Nixon Administration an after.  So with this episode I want to establish with you, our audience, that Geoff Shepard is not a conspiracy theorist, not a person pedaling a story of a vast intricate plot of espionage designed to destroy a President, but a serious man who has uncovered a rather simple case of Prosecutorial Misconduct that has sadly occurred in far less dramatic fashion  in courtrooms and legal cases all over America.  It is a simple case of partisans in a political scandal who took control of the wheels of justice, with no real supervision, with over 100 of the best partisan lawyers and investigators in America, and a willing press covering it all, and then made a case up out of a mountainThe Lowcountry Gullah PodcastTheculture, history and traditions podcast where Gullah Geechee culture lives!Listen on: Apple Podcasts Spotify

Season 3 Episode 8 Who Really Shot Abraham Lincoln at the Ford Theater? Bam!!! The other shot heard around the world. The Civil War in America had just ended, and all the major newspapers around the North and South began printing their stories. However, when the dust cleared enough to see, John Wilkes Booth was designated the fall guy of this historical event. Hello everyone, Sidney St. James here with my podcast on writing the Abraham Lincoln Assassination Series several years ago. Some of you have learned that I have got this niche of being able to go back in time "in my virtual time machine" and put myself in peoples' shoes. I did this many times in my genealogy studies and did this when I wrote the five-book series on the Lincoln Assassination. It was the evening of April 14, 1865. According to the Northern newspapers, the War Between the States had ended, and Washington City celebrated. President Abraham Lincoln entered the balcony at Ford's Theater to a standing ovation: a sign of a return to everyday life in America. The following morning, just a few minutes before 7:30, President Abe Lincoln was dead, and assassin J. Wilkes Booth became one of the, if not THE most, infamous figures in all U. S. history. But now, 157 years since the one-shot from a derringer pistol, conspiracy theories still abound in America. I suppose you can say it was one of the most egregious "fake news" cover-ups in all of American history. "What if I were to come right out and tell you John Wilkes Booth didn't fire the gun that killed President Lincoln? What if I was to say to you he actually died in Oklahoma many, many years later? What if I tell you the Secretary of War was secretly in on the plot to kill the President? What if I were to tell you the Catholic Church was knee-deep in all of it from the start? All these questions come from the writing of the actual court transcripts and autopsy reports, and other items of interest in a five-book series, "The Lincoln Assassination Series." Since going to college in my early days, I have been a historian. I love history, either from the Bible or our own American History. Although I majored in History at A&M for a few semesters, I graduated without a degree in that field, but I still remain very interested in the Assassination of President Abraham Lincoln. My 5-book series, which would be 6 books, began at President Lincoln's bedside when he passed away on April 15, 1865, at 7:22 in the morning. I know you might go out and find that there is not a sixth novel. This is because I elected to not write the one on the conspiracy theories. However, I will say there is much evidence in all the digital archives that will make you think that there was more to only one man pulling the trigger on a single-shot derringer pistol! In my review of the piles of digital archives when investigating the President's death and going over eyewitness reports to write the original five novels, there are actually pieces of this evidence that going reveals a "secret shooter" and cover-up that stretches from Washington City all the way to the Catholic Church. I always read all the old newspapers and read the memoirs before writing my stories. You may wonder who Elizabeth Dixon is because Elizabeth actually worked hard to erase herself from history. She went so far as to pay off reporters not to write about her. She did, however, leave behind her diaries and letters, which were passed down from generation to generation until they landed in the hands of Caroline, Elizabeth's direct descendent.Caroline talks in-depth about her 3rd great-grandmother Elizabeth Dixon, whose presence was requested by first lady Mary Todd Lincoln during the dark hours following her husband's fatal shooting.
