March 5th, 1993. A day that will live in infamy. On that date, Sir Nicolas Cage, Lord Samuel L. Jackson and director/activist E. Max Frye... solved... racism. Yes indeed. They did it with the help of a little film called Amos & Andrew (not Andy). You might doubt these claims, you might find them dubious... but need I remind you of the power of film. Indeed, Sir Mix-a-Lot said it best in the film's title theme when he declared "I may not look like Beaver but you don't either." Next week: Good God, we've been threatening this one for a while. On this episode of Taste Buds with Deb, host Debra Eckerling speaks with filmmaker, Accidental Talmudist and longtime “Jewish Journal” contributor Salvador Litvak. Litvak's Passover classic, “When Do We Eat?” stars Max Greenfield, Ben Feldman, Shiri Appleby, Lesley Ann Warren, Michael Lerner, and Jack Klugman. Litvak directed the film that he co-wrote with his wife and partner, Nina Davidovich Litvak.    The Litvaks' second movie was “Saving Lincoln.” Their new film “Guns & Moses” is out this summer.    “The perennial fifth question of the Passover Seder is, ‘When do we eat?'” Litvak, who is also the author of “Let My People Laugh: Greatest Jewish Jokes of All Time,”  says. “There's all these holiday movies… but there was no Passover movie.”    When the Litvaks made “When Do We Eat?” they were connected to Judaism, but not yet Orthodox.    “The movie's probably a little bit edgier than we would make it today,” Litvak says. “One of the main plot points is that one of the kids doses his dad with a strong hallucinogen at the Passover seder, but also the movie contains wonderful spiritual teachings.”   He adds, “[Our dream: that] it would become the Jewish, ‘It's a Wonderful Life,' the movie that people watch every year.”   Salvador Litvak shares the backstories behind “When Do We Eat?” and his new Jewish joke book. the connections between Judaism and food, and his recipe for Sal-mon. He also talks about creating The Accidental Talmudist, how that community embraced his Passover classic film aka “My Big Fat Jewish Seder.”    “My mom always used to say there's two kinds of people: those who get into conversations in the checkout line at the supermarket and those who don't,” Litvak says. “We are [the first] kind.”   Learn more at SalvadorLitvak.com, AccidentalTalmudist.org, and GunsandMosesMovie.com. We begin a new year of the show this week, and kick off the campaign by welcoming These Estates and Oiseaux musician and Briarpatch publisher John Cameron for an unseen selection from his collection, a prescient political satire that is now 52 years old but could release today with few alterations and still feel timely. It's 1972's The Candidate, directed by Michael Ritchie, and starring Robert Redford, Peter Boyle, Melvyn Douglas, Don Porter, Allen Garfield, Karen Carlson and Michael Lerner. It's a comedy without any jokes that still manages to be fairly funny, at least when its bleak political outlook doesn't feel equal parts harrowing and deadly accurate. Plus: J Mo's hooked on Pocket Card Jockey, while Hayley and John are willing to die for Casino Regina. Other works discussed on this episode include Oppenheimer, Dune: Part Two, Aquaman & The Last Kingdom, Beau Is Afraid, The Devils, Go, Ocean's Eleven, Bulworth, Fletch, Fletch Lives, season 6 of The West Wing, Parks & Recreation, The Thick of It, In The Loop, Death of Stalin, The Newsroom (CBC), The Ides of March, Our Brand Is Crisis, and Lions For Lambs among many more. If you'd like to watch The Candidate before listening to our discussion, some maniac has posted the entire movie for free on YouTube. And we thank them. We'll be back next week as Year 2 on the pod continues with a shot at redemption for two top stars who have recently wronged us on the pod by being in movies we watched that were not good. Yes, Kurt Russell and Val Kilmer can completely redeem themselves as we'll be back to watch 1994's Tombstone, a 90s VHS classic that somehow both hosts have never seen before. It's currently streaming on Disney+ if you want to watch it, and of course we're wrapping up the month the week after with our monthly canon submission, Christopher Nolan's TENET. Until then, we'll see you at the movies!!

The VHS Strikes Back

The production of "Anguish" in 1987 was a unique and ambitious endeavor that brought together a talented team led by director Bigas Luna. The film is notable for its innovative approach to storytelling and its exploration of psychological horror, which set it apart from conventional horror movies of its time. Director Bigas Luna, known for his distinctive and imaginative filmmaking style, carefully crafted a gripping narrative that delved into the complexities of the human mind. Luna's vision for the film was to create a suspenseful and psychologically disturbing experience that would challenge and intrigue the audience. Zelda Rubinstein's portrayal of Alice Pressman, the troubled mother, was a central element in bringing the character to life. Her performance added depth and authenticity to the portrayal of mental illness, adding to the film's unsettling atmosphere. The production also benefited from the cinematography of José Luis Alcaine, who effectively captured the eerie and claustrophobic tone of the film. The use of lighting and camera angles heightened the sense of unease and suspense throughout the movie. In terms of practical effects, the film employed practical gore and special effects to depict the gruesome murders, adding to the visceral impact of the horror elements. The combination of practical effects and psychological terror helped create an immersive and chilling experience for the viewers. While "Anguish" didn't receive mainstream commercial success, it garnered a cult following among horror enthusiasts for its unique storytelling, strong performances, and atmospheric direction. Over the years, the film has become a cult classic, celebrated for its innovative take on the horror genre and its exploration of the human psyche. The story revolves around a deeply disturbed mother named Alice Pressman, portrayed by Zelda Rubinstein. Alice suffers from a severe mental illness, bordering on schizophrenia, and her condition is fueled by a haunting past trauma. Obsessed with the idea that her own eyes are failing, Alice becomes fixated on the notion that she needs fresh human eyes to preserve her sight. She pressures her introverted and impressionable son, John (played by Michael Lerner), into helping her carry out a series of gruesome murders to obtain the necessary eyes. As John becomes increasingly entangled in his mother's delusions, the lines between reality and fantasy blur, driving him to the brink of madness. As the body count rises, a local police detective starts investigating the peculiar string of murders, eventually closing in on the Pressman household. The film delves deep into the twisted dynamics of a dysfunctional mother-son relationship and explores the unsettling power of a deteriorating mind. With a chilling atmosphere and a psychological rollercoaster at its core, "Anguish" delivers a gripping and haunting tale of horror that leaves audiences questioning the nature of sanity and the depths of human darkness. thevhsstrikesback@gmail.com https://linktr.ee/vhsstrikesback --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thevhsstrikesback/support

The Equalizer Season 3 Episode 18: No Place Like Home Aired on CBS: March 16, 1988 Directed by: Tobe Hooper (Texas Chainsaw Massacre!) Written by : Robert Eisele Featuring: Michael Rooker, Kelly Curtis, Michael Lerner, Richard Bright, Leo Burmester, Ed Lauter The Equalizer helps out a down-on-their-luck family who needs welfare assistance in the time of Reaganomics. This one surely had people chatting at the water cooler as they waited for their inter-office mail. This hit the topic thoroughly, between Mickey "Bootstraps" Kostmayer, the actual streets of NYC, multiple levels of capitalists and welfare programs, even the media. The usual Equalizer crazy antics made way for a renowned director (Tobe Hooper) and a top-tier guest spot by new-on-the-scene Michael Rooker. Author of The Wild Edge of Sorrow: Rituals of Renewal and the Sacred Work of Grief; The Threshold Between Loss and Revelation, (with Rashani Réa) and In the Absence of the Ordinary: Essays in a Time of Uncertainty, he has introduced the healing work of ritual to thousands of people. He founded and directs WisdomBridge, an organization that offers educational programs that seek to integrate the wisdom from indigenous cultures with the insights and knowledge gathered from western poetic, psychological, and spiritual traditions. As a gifted therapist and teacher, Francis has been described as a jazz artist, improvising and moving fluidly in and out of deep emotional territories with groups and individuals, bringing imagination and attention to places often held with judgment and shame. Francis received a B.A. from the University of Wisconsin Green Bay and two Master's Degrees from John F. Kennedy University in Clinical Psychology and Transpersonal Psychology. His writings have appeared in anthologies and journals exploring the confluence between psyche, nature, and culture. His work was featured in The Sun magazine (October 2015), the Utne Reader (Fall 2016), and the Kosmos Journal. (Winter 20201) He is a frequent presenter and keynote speaker at conferences, bringing insight, poetry, and a breath of humor to his talks. Francis is currently on staff at Commonweal Cancer Help Program, co-leading their week-long retreats with Michael Lerner. He has taught at Sonoma State University, the Sophia Center in Oakland, and has been the featured teacher at the Minnesota Men's Conference.
