International Women's Day is a global day celebrating the many achievements of women all over in the world - including across the vast world of sport. Donnovan took a few trips around North America to meet some of the remarkable women in hockey, including one to Seattle, where he spoke to Kraken assistant coach Jessica Campbell (2:11), the first woman to hold an on-bench role as assistant or associate coach in NHL history, as they discuss what led her to this point, the support she's had along the way, and what goes into a typical day in preparing the players for gameday. Afterwards, Donnovan hopped on a flight to Colorado, where he spoke with Kim Weiss (35:33), the video coach for the Colorado Avalanche's AHL affiliate team, the Colorado Eagles. They chat about what's next for her, and what it's like being so close to the NHL itself. Plus, Donnovan also speaks with Lindsay Pennal (57:18), executive director of the NHL Coaches Association - they discuss her work with the NHLCA's Female Coaches Program, and how it's helping to shape the career paths of women striving to reach the highest levels of hockey. What are the different types of housing for autistic and I/DD adults? What's an ICF? What are Home and Community-Based Services? Why are waitlists so long? Why do some disability rights advocates attack freedom of choice in housing? Scott Mendel and Ashley Kim of Together for Choice put it in perspective, hosted by Jill Escher. Highlights: • What are ICFs? Is there really an entitlement? Sort of, but it may be far away and of low quality. What different kinds of ICFs are out there? The real reason that state-run ICFs are more expensive than private ICFs. • What is HCBS? Why are there such long waitlists in most states? The problem of the lack of political will. • Why we need a person-centered full continuum of care rather than arbitrary rules about housing settings. • Absurd state rules that place autistic clients in more costly and inappropriate settings. • How severely autistic clients with HCBS can become isolated and disconnected from the community. • The severe staffing crisis seen across the country. • The need for families to meet with legislators and share their stories. Advocacy matters. Do you remember coloring books? You'd use a variety of colored crayons to make pretty pictures. Now research shows that coloring inside the line is no longer just for kids! Kim Weiss explains how coloring is helpful for a number of health issues found in adults including reducing stress! Inkspirations are from the original publishers of the Chicken Soup for the Soul Series. Let’s face it, some days are plain hectic. Sometimes we are up to our ears in errands, chores at home, or responsibilities at the office. Worse yet, some days there are incredibly awful things going on in our world. And some days, all we want is tune out the unforgiving realities that exist in our world and wind down. Much like art therapy, “coloring therapy” as a form of active meditation offers an easy way to reduce stress and calm the mind. To start overcoming heartache, releasing tensions, and building positive energy, pick up some pencils, markers, crayons, or whatever you want and start a coloring book. There is less pressure with coloring, as opposed to drawing or painting. As mentioned, coloring can take on the role of active meditation. Without the stress of having to imagine your own design and try to perfect it, you are simply free to get started bringing a creation life. It is easy to mindlessly color and let your pencils or markers take the piece where they may. Coloring can inspire and awaken our inner motivations as we express ourselves. As one takes the steps to create a colored page – choosing mediums and colors, deciding on techniques, and more – there is a certain mentality that sets in. Someone that is coloring becomes less afraid to take risks with their art. Coloring outside of the lines, coloring dogs purple, turning a flower bud into a sunset; it all helps to open the mind as we turn something conventional or predictable into our own. People who color can step out of everyday boxes, and the more they do, the less afraid they become of others judging their work. In these ways, expressing creativity through coloring helps us to break down creative barriers and feel more comfortable with trying new things, while at the same time feeling more comfortable with ourselves.
