The Joe and Smith Podcast: Read the Book of Mormon with us

Joe questions whether reading the BOM is good for him. Smith suggests for the listener to order a free one, but the missionaries will bring it. The guys accidentally stumble into the church's new branding campaign to have a BOM in your crotch. They return to the well until the end of the episode. In this chapter, JS warns us that there are some Isaiah chapters coming. Like 13 of them. There are 2 more BOMs in crotches. Smith has a story about a TBM friend, who may be a deer. The guys remember D'ump from Tim and Eric. Joe passes along a book recommendation from someone he trusts- Jennette McCurdy's I'm Glad My Mom Died Smith opens some mail that he got from Joe. Joe included his testimony of the BOM in the package. Smith re-reads a previous verse. JS, he has a BOM in his crotch. Joe doesn't like the use of the word proving in the BOM. 5 more BOMs in crotches. The BOM just isn't going to burn in some house fires. Is Santa a lie for children? There is more BOM logic about why God exists. Also the LDS Godhead is confusing. Mysterious vmail- Phoenix Gem and Mineral Show (07/26/2012) Joe poses a hypothetical scenario about guys arguing over the bible. Joe gets the Kinderhook Plates mixed up with View of the Hebrews. Joe liked hearing that Australia has more restrictive standards for what is and is not considered a religion. Joe tries to quiz Smith about the names of some of the brethren's wives. They find out that Joe is reading from an old list. Also, that LDS guys technically get more virgins than some of the other religions' afterlife. Some more BOMs in crotches. Smith has a story about his earthly father. Joe asks how Smith's dad is doing. Joe tells a story about catching up with an old friend. Joe tells an embarrassing story about the guys' friend, Sam the Eagle. One more BOMcrotch. Joe reads a ‘yo child is so perished' from their listener. On the latest episode of Mormon Book Reviews Jonathan Neville returns to discuss a unique piece of his collection, a replica of the controversal Kinderhook Plates. Jonathan describes how he acquired them. This serves as a catalyst to discuss the original plates and how a plausible argument can be made of their ancient origin within a Restorationist context. Joseph Smith claimed to have partially translated them. Neville discusses why this is not a problem, even if they were fake. Up until 1980 it was widely thought by the Church that they were authentic, this is no longer the case. Jonathan puts forth a hypothosis that is original and thought provoking. Perhaps it is time to reopen the case!PatreonLinks about the Kinderhook platesWikiChurch of Jesus Christ - Kinderhook PlatesChurch of Jesus Christ - Kinderhook Plates Brought to Joseph Smith Appear to Be a Nineteenth-Century Hoaxrsc.byu.edu - Did Joseph Smith Translate the Kinderhook Plates?

The Interview: In this episode of the Latter-day Saint Perspectives Podcast, Laura Harris Hales interviews Mark Ashurst-McGee, co-author of a new in-depth study of the Kinderhook plates saga. It is well-known that Joseph Smith claimed to have translated the Book of Mormon by “the gift and power of God” from a set of golden plates that he found in a stone box buried in a hill near his home. Lesser known is his later translation from a collection of brass plates disinterred from an Indian burial mound near Kinderhook, Illinois, located about seventy miles downstream from Nauvoo. The History of the Church records that Joseph Smith “translated a portion” of these plates and declared that they contained “the history of the person with whom they were found,” who was “a descendant of Ham.” That official narrative dominated the legacy of this second set of plates for over a century. Nevertheless, controversy always swirled around the affair. This recital is a strange episode in early Mormon history, but the history of the interpretation of the story is even more peculiar. Years after the event, two of the men who were present when locals discovered the plates claimed that they made the plates with help from the village blacksmith, inscribed them with characters, planted them in the mound, and then led an unsuspecting group of curious locals to “discover” them as part of a hoax. Rejecting this contention, considering the revelation of a supposed hoax to be the real hoax, Latter-day Saints used the Kinderhook plates for decades as supporting evidence for the validity of the golden plates and their translation into the Book of Mormon. In the late nineteenth century, several publications promoted the testimony of one of the scammers as evidence of the Kinderhook forgery. Critics of Mormonism used this revelation to attack Joseph Smith’s legitimacy as a prophet and an inspired translator. Soon detractors distilled the anti-Mormon argument into a pithy slogan: “Only a bogus prophet translates bogus plates.” In light of the slur, Latter-day Saints doubled down, insisting that the forgery claims were lies, the plates were genuine, and they supported the Book of Mormon and Joseph Smith’s prophetic claims. Despite these confident declarations, Latter-day Saint contentions later proved erroneous. Rigorous scientific testing in 1980 demonstrated conclusively that the plates were modern forgeries rather than pre-Columbian creations. Many wondered how these new findings spoke to Joseph Smith’s purported rendering. Latter-day Saint historian Stanley Kimball problematized any simple resolution to the mystery when he examined the drama further by turning to the contested statement of Joseph Smith regarding the translation. At about the same time scientific evidence confirmed the fraudulent origin of the plates, Church historians discovered the actual source of Joseph Smith’s declaration on the translation as found in the History of the Church. As it turns out, Joseph Smith never wrote that he had translated from the Kinderhook plates. Instead, researchers learned that early Latter-day Saint chroniclers extracted this information from the diary of Joseph Smith’s private secretary, William Clayton. In an article in the Ensign, the official magazine of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Stanley Kimball revealed the modern fabrication of the Kinderhook plates, but at the same time he revealed the true source of the words attributed to Joseph Smith and argued that William Clayton was wrong when he wrote about Joseph Smith translating from the plates. In this new study, Don Bradley and Mark Ashurst-McGee provide analysis of Clayton’s relationship with Joseph Smith, his diary-keeping practices, and the broader context of the entire journal entry that served as the basis for the statements inserted in the History of the Church. They argue that Clayton knew very well what he was writing about and that Smith did, in fact,

Over the past several decades. credible Mormon-themed scholarship has determined beyond any reasonable doubt that Joseph Smith's claim have special powers to "translate" ancient languages was not true, and that Joseph often relied on plagiarism to produce his "revelations."  Up until recently, at least three clear instances of false translation by Joseph Smith were widely known: the Book of Mormon, the Book of Abraham, and the Kinderhook Plates. In the summer of 2015, something truly remarkable happened.  A BYU undergraduate, along with her professor, discovered a fourth example of false translation, and yet another example of plagiarism on the part of Joseph Smith - this time in the canonized "Joseph Smith Translation" of the Holy Bible (found in modern LDS scripture) Join me and scholar Haley Wilson Lemmón today as we discuss this groundbreaking research she conducted at BYU, along side professor Thomas A. Wayment -- as together they discovered literally hundreds of instances where Joseph Smith plagiarized portions of the Joseph Smith "Translation" of the Bible directly from Adam Clarke's Bible Commentary. Today's story includes: Haley's early years growing up as a highly devout Mormon girl and young woman who struggled significantly with undiagnosed religious anxiety (possibly scrupulosity). Haley's LDS mission to Panama. Haley's discovery of Joseph Smith's plagiarism, as she was working as a BYU undergraduate research assistant under Dr. Thomas A. Wayment. Haley's deep struggle with her Mormon faith once she began studying the authenticity of Mormon scripture and other truth claims. Haley's troubling brush with the BYU Honor Code Office, which almost resulted in her being expelled from BYU. How Haley's name was almost removed from the publishing of her research with Dr. Wayment. A review of Haley's current views on LDS Church truth claims. As a part of this interview, we will be discussing in-depth the article/chapter "A Recently Recovered Source: The Use of Adam Clarke’s Bible Commentary in Joseph Smith’s Bible Translation" that she co-authored with Thomas A. Wayment, which recently appeared in the newly released book "Producing Ancient Scripture: Joseph Smith's Translation Projects in the Development of Mormon Christianity," edited by Michael MacKay, Mark Ashurst-McGee, and Brian M. Hauglid.

On this episode, Joseph Smith is a fraud. We discuss two occurrences in Nauvoo which prove that Jo didn’t have access to any knowledge that people of his day did. First is the Greek Psalter incident where a guy proved that Jo had no idea what language was on the parchment. After that is the entirety of the Kinderhook Plates incident, which proves beyond any shadow of a doubt that Jo unabashedly knew he was a fraud. These incidents, coupled with the Book of Abraham in early 1842, reveal Jo to be the liar he was. In May 1843, a set of bell-shaped brass plates were brought to Joseph Smith to see if he would translate them. These plates were later revealed to be forgeries meant to expose Joseph as a fraud. Historical evidence, however, suggests that Joseph wasn't fooled. He briefly examined them and compared them other ancient writings in his possession, and may have offered an ordinary translation of a "portion" of them. But there is no evidence Joseph ever sought or received revelation about these plates, and he never produced a full translation. Joseph's "gift and power" to translate did not work on these bogus plates, and he lost interest in them quickly. Read at bit.ly/know454
