Jessica Fuentes speaks with art educator and author Laura Evans about her recently published book, “The Atlas of Art Crime: Thefts, Vandalism, and Forgeries.” “I remember learning about the 1990 Isabella Stewart Gardner theft… and then going to visit the museum in grad school and confronting those empty frames, where those works of art were stolen from, was really sobering. Seeing these holes, these gaps, where these artworks were disappeared… it gives me goosebumps just thinking about it.” Related Readings: https://glasstire.com/2025/05/18/art-dirt-theft-vandalism-forgeries-talking-with-laura-evans-about-art-crime If you enjoy Glasstire and would like to support our work, please consider donating. The TAKE IT DOWN Act is the first major U.S. federal law to squarely target non‑consensual intimate imagery (NCII) and to include a component requiring tech companies to act. Long handled via a patchwork of state laws, it criminalizes NCII at the federal level—both authentic images and AI-generated digital forgeries—and requires that platforms remove reported NCII within 48 hours of notification by a victim or victim's representative. TAKE IT DOWN passed with wide bipartisan support—unanimously in the Senate, and 409-2 in the House. Melania Trump championed it, and it is expected that President Trump will sign it. And yet, some of the cyber civil rights organizations that have led the fight to mitigate the harms of NCII over many years have serious reservations about the bill as passed. Why?Lawfare Contributing Editor Renée DiResta sits down with Mary Anne Franks, President and Legislative & Technology Policy Director at the Cyber Civil Rights Initiative, and Eugene L. and Barbara A. Bernard Professor in Intellectual Property, Technology, and Civil Rights Law at the George Washington Law School; Becca Branum, Deputy Director of the Free Expression Project at the Center for Democracy & Technology; and Adam Conner, Vice President, Technology Policy at the Center for American Progress to unpack what the bill does, why it suddenly cruised through on a rare bipartisan wave of support, and whether its sweeping takedown mandate will protect victims or chill lawful speech. This is a nuanced discussion; some of the guests support specific aspects of the bill, while disagreeing about the implementation of others. Expect clear explanations, constructive disagreement, and practical takeaways for understanding this important piece of legislation.More resources:TAKE IT DOWN Act Legislative Summary and TextBecca Branum and Tom Bowman's letter urging changes to TAKE IT DOWN prior to passageCyber Civil Rights InitiativeSenate press release upon House signing, including list of 120 supporting organizationsTo receive ad-free podcasts, become a Lawfare Material Supporter at www.patreon.com/lawfare. In this episode, I explore with you the mysteries of various "out-of-place artifacts," which is to say, (allegedly) old objects that would challenge conventional chronology and/or the mainstream view of the technical advancement of ancient cultures. Forgeries, hoaxes, and pranks abound. I tell you about some of them like the Michigan Relics or the Crystal Skulls; they were fake but still are good stories. A small number of objects still retain an element of mystery or invite us to rethink our views of ancient societies, like the Antikythera Mechanism, or we still don't exactly know how they were made, like the Shroud of Turin. http://bit.ly/3GYu36VSmithsonian Magazine, January 2023, By Chanan TigayThe discussion highlights the groundbreaking work of Mike Langlois, a scholar with an impressive range of expertise, including seven degrees and a deep focus on the Dead Sea Scrolls. His work involves using high-tech methods, such as sophisticated scanning and analysis techniques, to uncover forgeries in ancient religious texts. This process helps separate authentic writings from fraudulent ones, allowing for a clearer historical understanding.Langlois, alongside experts like Dr. Kip Davis, is advancing our knowledge by using modern technologies to scrutinize ancient documents that were once considered gospel truth. The Dead Sea Scrolls, discovered in caves decades ago, have been central to the study of biblical history, but the ability to verify their authenticity has only recently become possible thanks to these innovations. The team's work is crucial because it addresses the core issue of determining which documents are authentic and which are fabricated. The impact of these findings is felt not only in the realm of biblical studies but in other historical disciplines as well.A key aspect of the conversation is the ethical consideration surrounding these forgeries. If forgeries are not identified, they can skew historical data and influence the way cultures, faiths, and mythologies are understood. For believers, especially, the discovery of falsehoods within these documents can be a challenge. Some may resist accepting this new information because it conflicts with deeply held beliefs, but the goal of scholars like Langlois is to uncover the truth, regardless of personal belief systems. The technological advancements being used in this research represent a significant leap forward. While the methods are still evolving, the impact is already profound, offering an objective way to distinguish between authentic and fraudulent texts. The conversation also touches on the broader implications for critical scholarship in religious and historical studies. In conclusion, the exciting work of scholars like Langlois is opening doors for a more accurate understanding of ancient texts. Their efforts help bring clarity to the complex intersection of faith, history, and evidence, and they challenge us all to think critically about the information we encounter. The Non-Prophets, Episode 22.02 airing Sunday, 01-15-2023 featuring Secular Rarity, Richard Firth-Godbehere and Helen Greene.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-non-prophets--3254964/support.
When Winnie Wong first saw Dafen Oil Painting Village in 2006, it was nothing like she'd imagined. The Chinese village was known for mass producing copies of Western art. She'd read about it in The New York Times, which described a kind of compound where thousands of artists painted replicas of famous artworks, like da Vinci's Mona Lisa or van Gogh's Starry Night, for European and U.S. hotels and condos.“We had an expectation, which was that there would be this giant factory,” said Wong, a professor of rhetoric at UC Berkeley. “And in this factory, there would be these painters working in an assembly line fashion: One person would paint the rocks, and one person would paint the trees, and one person would paint the sky.”But when she arrived in the small gated village, what she saw surprised her. In 2013, she published van Gogh on Demand: China and the Readymade, a book about her six years of research in Dafen and how it forever changed the way she thinks about art and authenticity and the nature of creativity.See more artwork and photos of Dafen from 2015, when Wong and architecture professor Margaret Crawford took a group of graduate students on a 14-day trip to the Pearl River Delta region to study urban art villages.Listen to the episode, read the transcript and see more photos on UC Berkeley News (news.berkeley.edu/podcasts).Music by Blue Dot Sessions.Photo by José Joaquin Figueroa. This year on Berkeley Voices, we're exploring the theme of transformation. This is the conclusion of our two part interview with Andrew Krinks on his recently published book White Property, Black Trespass: Racial Capitalism and the Religious Function of Mass Criminalization. Today we explore the religious functions police play for Christian societies, in particular the US, and their relationship to theological concepts of redemption and salvation. We also talk about religious discipline, labor discipline and regimes of prison labor, which is obviously topical with renewed discussions of incarcerated fire fighters with the recent wildfires in Southern California. Krinks also explains why the dehumanization of prisons should not be understood as a violation of their mandate, but a fundamental aspect of it, one that also serves a function within the religious ideologies from which the prison emerges. Definitely check out part one of this conversation if you missed it and if you are inclined to up a copy of the book, which is a fascinating read, check out our friends at Massive Bookshop who use the proceeds from their book sales to bail people out of jail. I also just want to plug that we have an ongoing video series on our YouTube channel with Mtume Gant who is a filmmaker, media critic, and professor of film, where we are reading and discussing Cedric Robinson's book Forgeries of Memory and Meaning. And if you like this conversation I think you'll find a lot of resonance with those discussions as well as they really go into how and when race-making processes are instrumentalized in the media, using historical examples. We aim to bring you content multiple times per week, sometimes it's in video from, sometimes it's in audio form, so make sure that you subscribe to our podcast feed as well as to our YouTube channel. In order to release this much work, requires a great deal of support from our listeners and viewers. We will have another study group starting up in late February and that will be open to all of our patrons as well. Thank you so much for all of your support, and if you would like to join the wonderful community of folks who make this show possible, become a patron of the show for as little as $1 a month at Patreon.com/millennialsarekillingcapitalism. In this video Dr Robert Carter, a Ph.D. in coral reef ecology and genetics, explores the distinction between natural selection and evolution, and examines how the two are actually opposites. We dig into how natural selection is part of God’s design, and how when we see species adapt within created boundaries, we are seeing something fundamentally different from evolution. Topics covered include how epigenetics and “created diversity” fit into biblical creation, how natural selection reduces rather than increases genetic diversity, and the origins of the millions of species that we see on earth today. ✍️ Links and Show Notes Natural selection ≠ evolution Natural Selection in Paradise ‘Refuting Evolution’ (Chapter 2) Problems in sexual selection theory and neo-Darwinism Too dry for a fly
In this episode we speak with Andrew Krinks about his recent book White Property, Black Trespass: Racial Capitalism and the Religious Function of Mass Criminalization. The book is really interesting and I highly recommend it, this is part 1 of a 2 part discussion we recorded on it. You can pick it up from Massive Bookshop the bookstore that uses their revenue from book sales to bail people out of jail. In this discussion Krinks goes into the religious function that the mass criminalization of Black, Brown, and dispossessed peoples serves within the racial capitalist system. Engaging with Marxist and materialist explanations as well as Christian theologians and bourgeois philosophers, we get into how police and prisons are tethered deeply with religious ideology, which also finds quarter within the so-called secular theorists who provided the political philosophical underpinnings of the capitalist system. We also get into dynamics of race making and racialist thinking by way of folks like Cedric Robinson and Ruth Wilson Gilmore to examine the connection between race making and property relations. I'll also note that last year we hosted a video conversation with Melayna Kay Lamb and Tia Trafford about the philosophical underpinnings of police power that has some important areas of overlap with this discussion as well, but focuses a bit more on European secular philosophy and policing. Starting on Monday the 6th we'll be hosting a new live series on our YouTube channel with Mtume Gant who is a filmmaker, media critic, and professor of film, where we will be talking about Cedric Robinson's Forgeries of Memory and Meaning. So if you like this conversation I think you'll find a lot of resonance with those discussions as well as they really go into how and when race-making processes are instrumentalized in the media, using historical examples. And lastly it is a new year, and we have a ton of new content coming this year. Last year we published 115 video episodes, and 38 audio episodes. We hope to be similarly productive again this year, but in order to do that we do need your support to be able to put in the amount of time necessary to get all that work done. You can become a patron of the show for as little as $1 a month. We should have another study group starting up in February and that is open to all of our patrons as well. So head over to Patreon.com/millennialsarekillingcapitalism and kick in a $1 a month or more to that effort.

Dan Berger and Clark Smith. Clark Smith is back on California Wine Country with Steve Jaxon and Dan Berger, to discuss WineSmith unusual varietals and more. Clark Smith is an influential wine consultant, university instructor, scientist and musician. That is his website, Who Is Clark Smith? which is about wine and more. He is also one of the most frequently appearing guests in the history of California Wine Country. His most recent CWC show is this one last May. Clark Smith applies the full spectrum of creative powers to making wine. He is known for making wine from unusual varietals, many that nobody has heard of. Dan Berger has known Clark Smith for decades and their conversation is one of hundreds they have had about wine over the years. This is the full unedited live show, nearly an hour of Dan and Clark's combined experience. Visit Chigazola Merchants online to shop their unique selection of fine Italian wines. Clark Smith has brought a Chardonnay that he made, in a Faux Chablis style. A lot of people have grown tired of the big buttery toasty Chardonnays. That wine can be made in a very different way that gives it a steely, mineral flavor, not the oaky creamy kind that comes from ML (malolactic fermentation). As an example of WineSmith unusual varietals, it is at least an alternative way of making a common varietal. This is a 2003, so it is well-aged. This wine is an example of Clark's Forgeries and Oddities. This is Clark's other website, WineSmith Wines, devoted entirely to wine.

Clark Smith has a Noam Chomsky story to tell. Clark Smith is in the studio for California Wine Country with Steve Jaxon and Dan Berger. Today he tells his MIT stories and more. The Clark Smith MIT story begins with his first two years of college, at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. This podcast episode is from the portion of the live show where Clark tells his personal story. Clark' last appearance on CWC was this episode of last March. The rest of Clark's conversation with Steve and Dan is about the wines he brought in today, so that has its own podcast episode, here. Clark Smith dropped out of MIT after two years and we finally hear the story today. At MIT, the senior faculty teach the Freshman courses. So he had Noam Chomsky for Linguistics, Francis Crick for microbiology, and several others. The trouble came when he had to declare a major at the beginning of his junior year, after earning straight As his first two years. He wanted to create his own major that combined science and art in some way. Today, that is a common practice in universities but at that time, he was not able to do it. So he dropped out thinking he would take a year to figure it out. The One-Way Cross Country Trip That is when Clark and a friend drove across the country and he ended up getting a job in a wine shop in Oakland. Someone asked him about a bottle of Paul Masson Emerald Dry wine. He didn't have the answer, so he started tasting the wines, eventually all of them. There were 250 wineries in the US and he visited a lot of them, maybe “all” of them. One day while visiting a winery he told his wife, that this was his calling. He is happy to have found the art plus science angle he was looking for. After that, he completed the BS and MS programs at UC Davis. Then he helped found RH Philips winery and he started his WineSmith consultancy. Click the logo to visit Davis Bynum Wines. When he was working for Benziger, their owner needed to find non-alcoholic wine. So he bought a reverse osmosis machine. One of the big problems of winemaking up to the 1970 was how to get rid of VA, Volatile Acidity, i.e. vinegar. In 1960 the average wine in California was 18.5% ABV, mostly Port and Sherry but that was before enough people learned how to really do it. There is great wine coming from places like South Africa and Australia, but most of the best product stays in the country of origin. Click the logo to visit our sponsor Rodney Strong for info on the 2024 Summer Concert series. Visit Clark's website to see the section about Forgeries and Oddities. Forgeries are wines that he makes exactly like wines from other places. His Cabernet Franc is Bordeaux style, made like a St. Emillion, and his Cabernet Sauvignon is made like a Pomerol. The Oddities are wines made from rare grapes you've never heard of, like Norton. Enter the promo code IKNOWCLARK all caps no spaces, for a 20% discount.
If one were to try to assign "blame" for men's difficulty in ascertaining whether a female partner has orgasmed, who bears the most responsibility? Traditionally, I would view it as the man's fault. Given our interest in that part of the female body, you'd think more men would conduct significant online research. But what if women are actively trying to prevent men from understanding how to "get them there"? It doesn't even have to be all purposeful. Some combination of women confused about their own bodies and others trying to make men feel better about themselves might unwittingly be misleading whole generations of men about what they "should" be doing. Another game-theoretical situation arises around STI tests. In the somewhat unusual case that tests are even exchanged by new partners, is there a good way to know if someone is sharing fabricated test results? And, what would even be the point of doing that, given that most STIs are treatable? And, are there really any women out there who would be pleased to find out their new male partner has a bunch of sex toys? In our previous episodes on "literary forgery" in early Christianity, we have never yet talked about the elephant in the room. Why are there so many in the New Testament? In this episode we will not be going over the old ground of what forgery is (an author falsely claiming to be a famous person) or how it was justified in the ancient world, even among writers who urge high ethical standards (!). We are instead interested in the startling scholarly claim that of the twenty-seven books of the New Testament, only eight of them were probably written by the person to whom they are attributed. In some cases the attributions are made by later readers (the author of Mark does not claim to be Mark); but in many cases the authors themselves make the false claim (2 Peter claims to be written by Peter). We might understand how one or two books like this managed to get into the Christian New Testament. But nineteen?

"Done to death by slanderous tongues," wrote William Shakespeare in his play, 'Much Ado About Nothing'. Shakespeare may be a renowned English playwright, poet, and actor, but, he has a bit of a credibility problem among some circles, and he has for quite a long time. It's known as the 'Shakespeare Authorship Question', and we're going to talk about some theories that suggest Shakespeare was a fake -- before we talk about a man who wrote a five-act play pretending to be the Bard. That could not have been easy. So, how now, good friends, and welcome. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Sculptor Alceo Dossena was an impactful figure in the art world of the early 20th century because he created forged masterpieces capable of fooling even the most expert of experts. Critics attributed his pieces to famous classical and Renaissance artists, and his works were sold through dealers and purchased by museums and collectors. But in an unexpected turn of events, the forger sued the dealers who sold his work. Some historians believe Italian forger Tobia Nicotra may have produced hundreds of document and signature forgeries attributed to names like Mozart and Galileo, before he was caught in the 1930s. He faded into obscurity, but his forgeries didn't. And for more than 80 years the University of Michigan housed a Galileo manuscript they didn't know was fake -- until a historian named Nick Wilding called its bluff.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Suan summarizes his position on Nicaea II and further defends his thesis. He shows that Nicaea II is simply silent on whether or not the apostles venerated icons like the 8th century iconodules. That's not the way of reasoning at the Council. Moreover, Suan explores the forgeries used at Nicaea II, finding them to not endanger any central teachings of the Council or his thesis.

The Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts in southern China had over 140 works stolen from their collection, but nobody noticed for years. This is because the thief replaced every item he stole… with his own paintings. Now some guy working in a museum quietly helping himself to the collection of artworks then replacing them with his own copies seems pretty strange and bold, but this next bit brings the story to next-level bananas territory. According to Xiao theft and forgery were rampant. He said he noticed that people were stealing his forgeries and replacing them with their forgeries. It kinda makes you wonder if he was getting the originals or if he was forging a copy of a forgery. I mean he did steal and copy work by Zang Daqian, a landscape and still-life painter who was also considered to be a master forger himself. Xiao plead guilty in court, but warned that the lax security was causing big problems for the university's collection. He said that he noticed fakes in there from his first day on the job and obviously quite a few more of them popping up throughout his time there. What is considered forgery in ancient times? Do we find examples in the New Testament? And is it an acceptable practice to write in the name of someone else "for the greater good?"
