Today we are re-introducing Sandra Tanner to a new generation of Mormons, exMormons, and never-Mormons. Both Sandra and her husband Jerald have strong Mormon backgrounds. When he was only eighteen, Jerald began to have doubts about his faith. When they began dating, Sandra Tanner also began to doubt. Throughout the 60s, 70s and 80s Jerald and Sandra Tanner were among the first to begin publishing on the problems with Mormon history and its truth claims. They opened a bookstore called the Utah Lighthouse Ministry and began publishing their research. Today we are going to talk about their discoveries on topics such as changes to the Book of Mormon, the problems with the Book of Abraham translation, the Kinderhook plates, how the Church covered up problematic parts of its history, and how they impacted hundreds of people in and out of the Mormon church. In episode 654: The Kinderhook Bigfoot, Audrey and Russell recount spine-chilling encounters with Bigfoot in upstate New York. Audrey vividly remembers seeing the creature near her farmhouse as a child, while Russell had a harrowing close-up experience by a barn. These encounters, occurring just miles apart in the early 1980s, shattered their perceptions of reality and left them with lingering fear. They reveal the skepticism and disbelief they faced from their families and others, even as nearby sightings lent credibility to their stories. Both discuss the creature's imposing physical traits and the pervasive fear that keeps Russell from ever returning to the woods in search of Bigfoot. Residents of Kinderhook, New York, are familiar with spooky tales of headless horsemen, ghosts, and fairies. After all,, Kinderhook is where Martin Van Buren is buried, and it inspired Washington Irving's The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.  While these famous events took place in the comfortably distant past, far more recently, in the 1980s, Kinderhook became known for a new type of fright. Once the locals began sharing their experiences, the terrifying Kinderhook Creature began to take shape. In The Kinderhook Creature and Beyond: A Personal Reminiscence, author Bruce G. In so doing, he delves into his own history and his numerous paranormal and cryptozoological encounters with what he calls “high strangeness” as well as those of his family members and other local residents. In today's episode, we continue with the CES Letter and the section on the Kinderhook plates and translation claims. This section of the CES letter focuses on Joseph Smith's ability to translate. After translating the Book of Mormon, Joseph acquired various different artifacts of what appeared to be ancient writing and attempted to translate these. Some of these artifacts ended up being hoaxes while others appear to say different things than Joseph claimed. Are the scholars wrong? Was Joseph translating these literally or just using them as inspiration? Is this a sign that Joseph Smith may not have been as inspired as he claimed? How does that change what we believe? As always we hope you enjoy the discussion and we would love to hear your thoughts. You can reach us on twitter @2guysonatangent or email us at 2guysonatangent@gmail.com. As a life long resident of the Adirondack region of Northern New York, books covering topics like ghosts and cryptids were slim. And aside from Night Siege, the Center for UFO Studies' examination of the Hudson Valley UFO flap of the 1980s, it was rare to find books about anomalous objects in the sky. And yet to the residents of the Hudson Valley the area had a paranormal reputation. It was the location of Whitley Strieber's experiences in the cabin in 1985. It was the place where the Kinderhook blob was seen, the Hudson Valley Boomerang, and numerous Bigfoot sightings. This weeks guest, Dr. CS Matthews, aka Professor WHAM, has been a resident of the Hudson Valley for over a decade. In her book, Mysterious Beauty: Living with the Paranormal in the Hudson Valley, newly released on Audible, she documents the strange experiences of the residents that live there, and examines the region's natural history, indigenous lore, and the experiences of early colonists. We discuss her book, what inspired her to write it, and some of the fascinating cases detailed within the pages of Mysterious Beauty. Anson De Peuy Van Buren was born in 1822 in Kinderhook, New York. He was a cousin of Martin Van Buren, the 8th President of the United States. His Father Ephriam Van Buren, and his mother Olive Jay Van Buren, moved the family to Michigan settling in Battle Creek in 1836. He was 13 years old, and would record the annals of his journey later in life along with many other stories of growing up on the Goguac Prairie in the Pioneer Collections. He was a teacher and writer, and was adept at recording details of pioneer life that included not only the struggles and triumphs, but also the humor of the period. His collection of writings in the early pioneer society of Calhoun and Kalamazoo counties were preserved by the Michigan Pioneer Society, and made part of the Pioneer Collections archives. Today, he is the most referenced historian from the period for these two counties. The ultimate question was-- is it art? is it a sign? On February 2nd, the zoning board of the village of Kinderhook sided with Cave and Shainman to say that the installation is art and can therefore not be censored. Spencer, who participated in the petitions and board meetings, gives this story some context. That was George Spencer talking to HMM's Sina Basila Hickey. The Interview: In this episode of the Latter-day Saint Perspectives Podcast, Laura Harris Hales interviews Mark Ashurst-McGee, co-author of a new in-depth study of the Kinderhook plates saga. It is well-known that Joseph Smith claimed to have translated the Book of Mormon by “the gift and power of God” from a set of golden plates that he found in a stone box buried in a hill near his home. Lesser known is his later translation from a collection of brass plates disinterred from an Indian burial mound near Kinderhook, Illinois, located about seventy miles downstream from Nauvoo. The History of the Church records that Joseph Smith “translated a portion” of these plates and declared that they contained “the history of the person with whom they were found,” who was “a descendant of Ham.” That official narrative dominated the legacy of this second set of plates for over a century. Nevertheless, controversy always swirled around the affair. This recital is a strange episode in early Mormon history, but the history of the interpretation of the story is even more peculiar. Years after the event, two of the men who were present when locals discovered the plates claimed that they made the plates with help from the village blacksmith, inscribed them with characters, planted them in the mound, and then led an unsuspecting group of curious locals to “discover” them as part of a hoax. Rejecting this contention, considering the revelation of a supposed hoax to be the real hoax, Latter-day Saints used the Kinderhook plates for decades as supporting evidence for the validity of the golden plates and their translation into the Book of Mormon. In the late nineteenth century, several publications promoted the testimony of one of the scammers as evidence of the Kinderhook forgery. Critics of Mormonism used this revelation to attack Joseph Smith’s legitimacy as a prophet and an inspired translator. Soon detractors distilled the anti-Mormon argument into a pithy slogan: “Only a bogus prophet translates bogus plates.” In light of the slur, Latter-day Saints doubled down, insisting that the forgery claims were lies, the plates were genuine, and they supported the Book of Mormon and Joseph Smith’s prophetic claims. Despite these confident declarations, Latter-day Saint contentions later proved erroneous. Rigorous scientific testing in 1980 demonstrated conclusively that the plates were modern forgeries rather than pre-Columbian creations. Many wondered how these new findings spoke to Joseph Smith’s purported rendering. Latter-day Saint historian Stanley Kimball problematized any simple resolution to the mystery when he examined the drama further by turning to the contested statement of Joseph Smith regarding the translation. At about the same time scientific evidence confirmed the fraudulent origin of the plates, Church historians discovered the actual source of Joseph Smith’s declaration on the translation as found in the History of the Church. As it turns out, Joseph Smith never wrote that he had translated from the Kinderhook plates. Instead, researchers learned that early Latter-day Saint chroniclers extracted this information from the diary of Joseph Smith’s private secretary, William Clayton. In an article in the Ensign, the official magazine of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Stanley Kimball revealed the modern fabrication of the Kinderhook plates, but at the same time he revealed the true source of the words attributed to Joseph Smith and argued that William Clayton was wrong when he wrote about Joseph Smith translating from the plates. In this new study, Don Bradley and Mark Ashurst-McGee provide analysis of Clayton’s relationship with Joseph Smith, his diary-keeping practices, and the broader context of the entire journal entry that served as the basis for the statements inserted in the History of the Church. They argue that Clayton knew very well what he was writing about and that Smith did, in fact,

Enormously powerful, intensely ambitious, the very personifications of their respective regions--Daniel Webster, Henry Clay, and John C. Calhoun represented the foremost statemen of their age. In the decades preceding the Civil War, they dominated American congressional politics as no other figures have. Now Merrill D. Peterson, one of our most gifted historians, brilliantly re-creates the lives and times of these great men in this monumental collective biography.Arriving on the national scene at the onset of the War of 1812 and departing political life during the ordeal of the Union in 1850-52, Webster, Clay, and Calhoun opened--and closed--a new era in American politics. In outlook and style, they represented startling contrasts: Webster, the Federalist and staunch New England defender of the Union; Clay, the "war hawk" and National Rebublican leader from the West; Calhoun, the youthful nationalist who became the foremost spokesman of the South and slavery. They came together in the Senate for the first time in 1832, united in their opposition of Andrew Jackson, and thus gave birth to the idea of the "Great Triumvirate." Entering the history books, this idea survived the test of time because these men divided so much of American politics between them for so long.Peterson brings to life the great events in which the Triumvirate figured so prominently, including the debates on Clay's American System, the Missouri Compromise, the Webster-Hayne debate, the Bank War, the Webster-Ashburton Treaty, the annexation of Texas, and the Compromise of 1850. At once a sweeping narrative and a penetrating study of non-presidential leadership, this book offers an indelible picture of this conservative era in which statesmen viewed the preservation of the legacy of free government inherited from the Founding Fathers as their principal mission. In fascinating detail, Peterson demonstrates how precisely Webster, Clay, and Calhoun exemplify three facets of this national mind.-James Bradley holds an M.A. in history from New York University, has been a journalist and editor for more than 20 years, contributing to The Village Voice, The New York Observer, and New York Newsday, among other publications. He has been an editor at Time Inc. since 1998. For five years, he was the senior project editor of The Encyclopedia of New York City, published by Yale University Press, now in its second edition. Bradley is currently under contract with Oxford University Press to complete a biography of Van Buren. Martin Van Buren, nicknamed the Red Fox of Kinderhook and the Little Magician, was the first American president born after American independence, the first raised in a home where English was not the primary language, and the first true political organizer. A political genius, who created the model of the nineteenth-century political machine, Van Buren is sadly consigned to the second or third tier of American presidencies. Jay and Luke push back against his undue relegation in this episode, the first of two covering Van Buren. They discuss his unique cultural background, his rise through the ranks of Jeffersonian politics, his creation of what became known as the Albany Regency, and his controversial efforts on behalf of James Crawford’s unsuccessful candidacy in 1824. That election saw Van Buren cast out of the center of political life with the return of DeWitt Clinton to the New York governorship and John Quincy Adams’s presidency. Yet in four short years, Van Buren managed to organize the Jacksonian resurgence, as well as his own political revival in New York. We end the episode with Van Buren elected governor of New York and called by Jackson to join his cabinet as Secretary of State.

The average Free Soiler was a radical Loco-Foco, probably from New York, touched by more than a decade of early libertarianism. But always and everywhere there were also the opportunists, the schemers, the self-advancing office seekers, desperate to leverage free soil into greater personal power, and right there at the top of this magnificent new party was the schemer in chief, the little magician, the Red Fox of Kinderhook, the architect of the Second Party System itself, and now the perpetrator of one of the dirtiest double games in all of politics, Martin Van Buren.Further Readings/References:For an overview of the later Loco-Foco movementBlue, Frederick. Buster Creek Farm owns 160 acres but farm about 800 now, 100% Angus/Hereford beef cattle. They mainly lease and restore busted dairy farms for hay, clover, etc. and normally run a herd of about 200, soon to be twice that. Just like Kinderhook and Grazin’ Angus, they’re in the fairly rapid expansion mode. Roy Cowherd is from a 1700-acre beef cattle empire in the Bluegrass of Kentucky, all Angus and Hereford, same as at Buster Creek Farm. In between that life and this one, Roy did the Manhattan finance thing for 17 years. Berkeley, Columbia MBA, still a CPA (no stereotypes please!), etc., but his main thing is this life now. He’s also become quite the farm tax expert in the tri-county area. Fundamentally, Roy’s goals are a combination of efficient farming, a certain lifestyle, and brutal realism mixed in with excellent nature. This program has been sponsored by Hearst Ranch. “If you can marry your situation to someone who can take advantage of the tax benefits- that’s very important.” [5:33] “If the land is used for farming, property taxes are one quarter of what they normally are.” [6:23] — Roy Cowherd on Greenhorn Radio
