New York City has the energy, but Columbia County has the air.Two years moving here from just 20 minutes south in the Hudson Valley, host Mat Zucker still feels like a bit of a "cidiot" sometimes—always eager to explore more of the incredible 635 square miles of valley, hills, farms, and villages right in his backyard. In this special episode, produced in collaboration with Columbia County Tourism, Mat serves up a very personal seasonal guide. Whether you're a foodie chasing the ultimate farm-to-table breakfast slot, an outdoor enthusiast hunting for hidden trails (and accessible restrooms!), or a shopper looking to bring a piece of the Hudson Valley home with you, we've got you covered.Best of all, you won't just hear from Mat. In this episode, we examine one of the lesser-known but revealing moments in Mormon history: the Kinderhook Plates. In 1843, a set of small brass plates covered with strange engravings were discovered in Kinderhook, Illinois and brought to Joseph Smith. Contemporary accounts record that Joseph examined the plates and began offering an interpretation of the… Read More »The Kinderhook Plates: A Joseph Smith Translation? This episode is a conversation with my dear friend Catherine Zack, which we initially recorded for her podcast "The 40 Portal". Catherine is the owner of Village Yoga in Kinderhook, NY, an executive coach, speaker, writer and collector of women's wisdom. This past summer, on her own 40th birthday - only 2 days apart to my own - she invited a group of close female friends to participate in what she calls The 40 Portal, a book in which everyone of 40 and under was invited to write a question, and everyone of over 40 was invited to share their wisdom. This book turned into the podcast The 40 Portal, on which Catherine invites 40 women to have conversations around their path towards 40, and beyond. In this conversation, Catherine and I discuss midlife and what it brings up for us to move into our 40s. I talk about what this portal means to me, and how I'm experiencing this non-linear space of self discovery. We discuss the liberation that can be found in midlife and a sense of shedding the pressure of the societal gaze. We share about embracing a sense of invisibility, the reclaiming of personal magic, erotic awakenings, re-villaging and being seen by the people we actually want to be seen by.Resources + LinksCath's ‘The 40s Portal Project'Cath's podcast ‘The 40 Portal'We mention these books: Terry Tempest Williams, “When Women Were Birds” and Miranda July, “All Fours”Sign up for my newsletter, How We Come BackMy book, Root and Ritual: Timeless Ways to Connect to Land, Lineage, Community, and the SelfConnect with me on Instagram @beccapiastrelliTimestamps[00:00] Introducing Catherine & her project ‘The 40 Portal' [08:25] The start of our friendship and the origin of the 40 Portal project [12:16] The personal definition and visual of portal and midlife [16:10] Exploration of identity through name, life phases and self definition [21:41] The myths and blessings of midlife [29:34] Seeking examples of women in their femininity and agency as a mother and as a daughter [34:47] Feeling seen, safe and at home in spaces with other women [38:23] Erotic awakening in midlife [46:29] Releasing patterns and self discovery in your 40s and beyond [50:00] Disappearing from the aggressive societal gaze and feeling seen in the community we knit [54:54] Life as a portfolio with many projects of many seasons and receiving your life's assignment
A packed campus, a live mic, and a question that cut to the bone: is the historicity of the LDS church stronger than Protestant Christianity? Noah Nielsen—born into a deeply LDS family, now a Christian and Division I runner—was there at UVU with his phone out, capturing the exchange about Nephites, Lamanites, witnesses, and the golden plates moments before a single gunshot froze the crowd. His perspective ties together two seismic moments: leaving a faith that shaped his childhood and surviving a tragedy that reshaped his sense of safety.A student-athlete recounts the day a campus Q&A turned deadly and the long journey that led him from deep LDS roots to Christian faith. We explore evidence claims about Mormonism, the missing clips controversy, trauma after the shooting, and the costly choices of conviction.• UVU event setup, lack of security, and crowd mood• Why Noah filmed the LDS exchange and what was said• Historicity challenges: Nephites, Lamanites, witnesses, golden plates• Family's exit from LDS after research and social fallout• BYU transfer, rebaptism ultimatum, and walking away from a scholarship• Theology contrast between biblical monotheism and exaltation claims• Firsthand account of the shot, panic, and escape• PTSD, returning to campus, and rebuilding trust in public spaces• The guiding question of conscience and costWe walk through Noah's backstory from Northern Ireland to Utah, where church life was family life. When his mother's sincere study unearthed troubling sources—the Book of Abraham, polyandry, the Kinderhook plates, Nauvoo Expositor, and Carthage Jail—their home shifted from certainty to questions. The social cost in Utah was immediate and painful, culminating in a move across the country to breathe again. Noah's own study moved beyond history into Scripture, where the biblical insistence on one uncreated God clashed with the LDS path of exaltation. That conviction would be tested later when a rebaptism ultimatum was tied to his BYU scholarship. He declined and rebuilt at UVU under a punishing deadline. Then there's the day itself. Noah arrived early to a pulsing amphitheater with little visible security. He filmed the faith debate that many claimed never happened, watched the dialogue tighten around evidence, and then heard the shot. What followed was panic, a scramble through bottlenecked exits, and the long shadow of trauma: avoiding campus, scanning every room, and relearning how to be in public places. Through it all, Noah returns to a simple question that steers his choices: what's the point of gaining the world if you lose your soul?If you value honest stories about faith, freedom of speech, and the cost of conviction, this conversation will stay with you. James Lauren is a board certified nurse practitioner who recently opened up a primary care clinic in Hudson. James is also a new homeowner and bravely let me try in-person recording at his adorable farmhouse with my miniature new recording system. We talk about primary care—what it is and why it matters, plus who their clinic serves. Short answer: everybody. We also chat about being a new homeowner, bartering labor, talking to people, being nice, painting a subfloor (which is a thing) and what a carpet knife is. Yes, I am still learning new things.Ice cream comes up and we trade notes about our favorite spots across the Valley, plus an upcoming visit to a corn maize. What happens when two thrill-seeking teens hack a new dirt-bike trail deep into the Hudson Valley woods—and the night suddenly goes dead silent? In this adrenaline-spiking episode, Jeremiah Byron talks with Scott, a lifelong outdoorsman from Red Hook, New York, who still remembers the crunch-crunch-crunch of something massive descending an embankment toward his bright-orange pup tent in the summer of 1976. No flashlight. No breath. Just unstoppable footsteps.Scott walks us through blazing their secret trail, the gas-soaked smell of two-strokes cooling in the dark, and the moment he realized whatever was outside could see without light. We also dive into Hudson Valley hot-spots—Kinderhook, Whitehall, the Catskills—and explore the theory of a migratory Bigfoot route stretching from the Green Mountains to the Poconos.

Today we are re-introducing Sandra Tanner to a new generation of Mormons, exMormons, and never-Mormons. Both Sandra and her husband Jerald have strong Mormon backgrounds. When he was only eighteen, Jerald began to have doubts about his faith. When they began dating, Sandra Tanner also began to doubt. Throughout the 60s, 70s and 80s Jerald and Sandra Tanner were among the first to begin publishing on the problems with Mormon history and its truth claims. They opened a bookstore called the Utah Lighthouse Ministry and began publishing their research. Today we are going to talk about their discoveries on topics such as changes to the Book of Mormon, the problems with the Book of Abraham translation, the Kinderhook plates, how the Church covered up problematic parts of its history, and how they impacted hundreds of people in and out of the Mormon church. In episode 654: The Kinderhook Bigfoot, Audrey and Russell recount spine-chilling encounters with Bigfoot in upstate New York. Audrey vividly remembers seeing the creature near her farmhouse as a child, while Russell had a harrowing close-up experience by a barn. These encounters, occurring just miles apart in the early 1980s, shattered their perceptions of reality and left them with lingering fear. They reveal the skepticism and disbelief they faced from their families and others, even as nearby sightings lent credibility to their stories. Both discuss the creature's imposing physical traits and the pervasive fear that keeps Russell from ever returning to the woods in search of Bigfoot. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

One of the most bizarre cryptids in North America, the "Kinderhook Blob" of New York's Hudson River Valley was first witnessed, as far as we know, by a 10 year-old boy named Bruce G. Hallenbeck. Bruce later became a prolific novelist and cryptozoology researcher. Paul & Ben welcomed him today to talk about this outlandish creature and those who have seen it. Discussion also ranged to Hudson valley UFOs and more bizarre cryptids. See the video of this show.

Darkness Radio presents The Kinderhook Creature & the High Strangeness of the Hudson Valley with experiencer/author, Bruce G. Hallenbeck! Residents of Kinderhook, New York, are familiar with spooky tales of headless horsemen, ghosts, and fairies. After all,, Kinderhook is where Martin Van Buren is buried, and it inspired Washington Irving's The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. While these famous events took place in the comfortably distant past, far more recently, in the 1980s, Kinderhook became known for a new type of fright. Once the locals began sharing their experiences, the terrifying Kinderhook Creature began to take shape. In The Kinderhook Creature and Beyond: A Personal Reminiscence, author Bruce G. Hallenbeck tells the story of those times. In so doing, he delves into his own history and his numerous paranormal and cryptozoological encounters with what he calls “high strangeness” as well as those of his family members and other local residents. He covers some of those stories with us today on Darkness Radio too! In today's episode, we continue with the CES Letter and the section on the Kinderhook plates and translation claims. This section of the CES letter focuses on Joseph Smith's ability to translate. After translating the Book of Mormon, Joseph acquired various different artifacts of what appeared to be ancient writing and attempted to translate these. Some of these artifacts ended up being hoaxes while others appear to say different things than Joseph claimed. Are the scholars wrong? Was Joseph translating these literally or just using them as inspiration? Is this a sign that Joseph Smith may not have been as inspired as he claimed? How does that change what we believe? As always we hope you enjoy the discussion and we would love to hear your thoughts. You can reach us on twitter @2guysonatangent or email us at 2guysonatangent@gmail.com. This episode is the beginning of a series brought to you by Jake. At the beginning of this little journey, Jake tells Dusti about a hoax played on Joseph Smith: the Kinderhook plates. They were fabricated plates meant to catch J Dawg for the scam artist he was. This is only the beginning of the rabbit holes Jake will take you down in the weeks to come.

As a life long resident of the Adirondack region of Northern New York, books covering topics like ghosts and cryptids were slim. And aside from Night Siege, the Center for UFO Studies' examination of the Hudson Valley UFO flap of the 1980s, it was rare to find books about anomalous objects in the sky. And yet to the residents of the Hudson Valley the area had a paranormal reputation. It was the location of Whitley Strieber's experiences in the cabin in 1985. It was the place where the Kinderhook blob was seen, the Hudson Valley Boomerang, and numerous Bigfoot sightings. This weeks guest, Dr. CS Matthews, aka Professor WHAM, has been a resident of the Hudson Valley for over a decade. In her book, Mysterious Beauty: Living with the Paranormal in the Hudson Valley, newly released on Audible, she documents the strange experiences of the residents that live there, and examines the region's natural history, indigenous lore, and the experiences of early colonists. We discuss her book, what inspired her to write it, and some of the fascinating cases detailed within the pages of Mysterious Beauty. Martin Van Buren just might be the most important President you don't really know much about. Governor, Senator, Secretary of State, VicePOTUS, and POTUS – this man's resume is long and impressive. After this lifetime of politics working toward The White House, he had the bad luck of dealing with a nasty financial crisis that ended his presidency nearly as soon as it started, getting kicked out after just 1 term. The man who created the modern day Democratic Party, The Little Magician! POTUS #8, Martin Van Buren is on this episode of American POTUS!The American POTUS podcast is a 501c3 non-profit show, supported by listener patriots like you.
